This dude, Dale, picked and chose his fights. SMU was doing what they did, but we know the NCAA and media heads like him were always willing to stomp on the little guy and then call out the big programs for doing the same thing.
Exactly. The ACC doesn't know what is about to hit them. And SMU just got the green light from the courts that prevented the NCAA from enforcing NIL violations....
Gotta love Dale Hansen. Lots of good takes. But not his take on college football. The difference between some Triple A baseball club and any college is college has built-in “forever fans”. Very few care about Double A Wichita but lots of folks care about Wichita State, win or lose. Now extrapolate that to the P2, B12, ACC, MAC, MWC, hell, even Ivy.
Not to mention a school has a much more personal relationship with fans/individuals than any privately owned sports team does just by the fact you can attend, participate, etc at the school. There's also always the chance a professional team leaving its curent location. Unless its a brand bigger than the location/regional identity most folks will drop their allegiance or interest in the team.
At least now it is a more even playing field. If you have one team not playing by the rules, but others following the rules, the team not playing by the rules is going to have an advantage. I would not say SMU was simply condemned for boosters pushing money to the players, but they were well outside the rules at the time and gain a clear competitive advantage in winning the SWC and nearing winning a national title back then in the 80s.
I’ve always loved Dale and his take on everything. Probably because his take is what mine would be. He’s definitely a legend in his own right.
I had to come back just now and listen to the Hansen interview again. It's even better the second time.
This guy is a treasure, great listen.
I watched Dale every night in the 80’s and 90’s. Eric Dickerson drove a Texas A&M Pontiac Firebird while at SMU!

I sure do miss Hansen being in our home every night 💙. Good to hear his voice again!

Minor league sports argument is 100% real
