Eating the $29 Hot Dog from Mischa. The Most Expensive Hot Dog NYC. Is it Worth It?

- I eat at and review Mischa and their $29 hot dog. The restaurant is located in Midtown, Manhattan of New York City. Mischa serves innovative new American cuisine, but they’re most famous for their hot dog, which might be the best in the city. I decide if the dish is worth the costly price tag.

The prix fixe is a good deal if you are with another person. I would have gone for the lobster roll myself. Also a reminder that Costco has a hot dog & soda for $1.50!
Yeah, if I wasn't intent on getting the hot dog, I would've gotten the lobster roll as well. Indeed, you can't beat Costco's deal!
Again, you are so unfailing polite to respond & engage with us all. God's speed! Thank you for your kind & considerate response. I do truly appreciate it!!!
I always try my best to do so. I really appreciate all the support.

Outstanding, 'back to earth' presentation in the early stages our current Holiday Madness!!!
Perfect timing to sneak in a mad craving while we've got more holiday feasts coming!
Cheers!
Absolutely! Cheers!
The price fixe definitely gave you a more rounded out meal and the $42 price tag is a lot more "reasonable". I think the salad needed something savory like crispy bacon bits or crisp chicken skin/salmon skin/other crispies. By the way i enjoyed the review and in context, a good choice. Thank you!
Thank you! Yeah, some bacon bits on that salad would've tasted amazing!
In no world is $42 acceptable for a hot dog 3 course meal, no matter how good the hot dog tastes.
Nicely phrased.
@Superbustr i was trying to be subtle and still ironic under the circumstances by using quote marks around the word "reasonable." And hoping other viewers would catch what I meant.
@@tomawen5916 Thanks for the grammar lesson. I've never used quotation marks in the way you have.
All the toppings make it more like an adventure.. it was unique. The whole thing is probably no more ridiculous than some of the deli sandwiches in NYC etc.
That's true. There are definitely plenty of other costly sandwiches in NYC.
In honor of this, I'm going to get some generic hotdogs from the store, make some greek hotdog sauce, chop up some kimchi, open up a jar of old godmother chili flakes, and maybe get some pimento cheese. I'll then call it a de-spacially-contextuallized $29 hotdog to capture the narrative of the fine dining experience and then eat it in the comfort of my home.
It’s kosher , it must cost 30$😂
If somebody served this hot dog on a paper plate at a cookout or something nobody would think it's all that amazing but because it's at some snobby restaurant in New York and they put it in a fancy setting with a nice white plate on a clean nice table suddenly it's worth $30
It’s kind of funny that a 3 star Michelin chef is making hot dogs. Ha Ha! I would have thought your salad could have come with some toast points, crackers or hot rolls but perhaps they knew the Hot dog and bun would be way to much for most people. I agree with you about the crime brûlée needing more crackle. That is the charm of ordering crime brûlée as it’s fun to crack the caramelized toping and eat it with the creamer pudding below it. Ok confession time. I am the weirdo that eats hot dogs with mayo and a tiny bit of mustard unless it’s a Coney Island dog from Detroit, Michigan. (Used to live in Michigan) Thanks for the video! Loved it.
Thanks for watching! There's no wrong way to eat a hot dog, and I also really enjoy a Coney Island dog.
That doesn't sound so weird. I avoid katsup 😂 and dodgy nacho cheese or chili.
That meal looked great.. but Im more concerned with a foodie drinking Starbucks than spending 29 dollars on a hot dog 😂 so much better coffee everywhere...
Haha! I know what you mean, but I had a Starbucks gift card, and I wanted to save a little money. Especially after I just spent $29 on a hot dog.
Nice, I found a new foodie to follow! I dig your style Sir.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Thanks for taking this risk and letting us see the details. I also would balk, initially, at the price of this dog. however, considering that it was a $42 special, you picked well. Happy digesting! Ciao.
Thank you! Yeah, getting the hot dog with the special menu is the way to go.
20,000 followers! At long last. Your reviews are always hilarious and insightful.
Thank you so much! Yeah, I'm really happy that I reached that milestone.
Only in NYC can someone sell a hot dog for 29 bucks and be taken seriously. James bringin the goods from the most silly priced hot dog in the USA, to the best steak deal in NYC. This chef/owner should slap a few flecks of gold on the dog and up the price to 529 bucks. Cheers James
Haha! Cheers! Thank you!
I get a feeling it's a kielbasa on a roll you can find in some specialty bakery.
@@Drownedinblood yes but what most people are forgetting is the cost of the fancy location.
becasue, street hot dogs, are the cheapest meat, bulked up with salt and msg and sodium benzoate and corn filler.
The bread is loaded with sugar and coloring and rising agents and is mostly air and preservatives.
This is a 100% real meat, not preservative hot dog with real fresh baked bread, and the condiments are great. You get chilli and Kimchi !
A chilli dog is what 6-8 US ? This thing gives you as much meat as 2 street hot dogs.
Honestly , 30 bucks vs 12 , for what you are getting, is actually a fair price.
this hotdog is actually healthy !
Street Hot Dog 🌭 vender’s in Manhattan will certainly try this next 🤣🤣🤣
The wife and i are planning a NYC trip in April and plan on going deep in the food scene, we're loving your videos! I might have to try to get Mischa on the list 😂
Awesome! I hope that both of you have a great trip!
@@Jamesnu 💚
Good luck with the food selections, bar moga is a Japanese “date” restaurant that serves omurice; something that I can’t get in my area, my wife and I enjoyed our experience there
@@brandoncarpenter9681 it looks amazing, thank you for the rec!
At least it appeared to be a hearty hotdog for that price!
It was definitely larger than the average hot dog.
his description's of the hot dog lol😂🤣
That is a delicious looking hot dog! Those toppings are incredible, too.
Great review!
Thank you! Yeah, it was delicious!
30$ sounds crazy but a hot dog and a coke will be about 12$ in California.
Gorgeously shot, and a really enjoyable review. $29 seems a lot for a hot dog, but not a lot for a memorable experience.
Thank you! Yeah, it was expensive, but that's one hot dog that I'll never forget.
Dude, you just got a subscriber. Like your style and positive attitude
Thank you so much!
Rutt's Hut in Clifton,NJ. Your content is like UA Eats.
I haven't been there yet. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thank you sharing your restaurant scene. Happy Belated Thanksgiving Holiday.😊😊
I think I would cut the hot dog sandwiche in half and then eat it.
Thanks for watching!
@@LMays-cu2hp Yeah, I bet a lot of people do that. It's a pretty large sandwich.
You are welcome. It looked very nice of a meal!! It did!! ☺
Remember the $5 shake in Pulp Fiction? It legit seemed crazy at the time but now a $5 shake would be a bargain.
Exactly!
Next level dog hands down. Rutt’s Hut in Clifton NJ. Far different atmosphere, but amazing food and experience. If you’re ever in Jersey.
Thanks for the recommendation. Someone else mentioned that place too. I'll definitely have to check it out sometime.
Jersey food crawl episode. Breakfast at Tic Tok diner, lunch at Rutt’s and dinner at Steve’s Sizzling Streaks. All within 5 miles of each other. All legendary food spots. My can’t miss go too’s. Enjoy your videos. Very well done. 👍
@@bb57365 Thank you! Yeah, maybe I will do that sometime.
I love the review and curious to try one of the most expensive hotdogs in NY.
Thank you! It's definitely worth a try!
45 Bucks for a quality dog, condiments, salad and desert in a nice establishment in NYC is not crazy, especially with cost of living being out of control. I totally agree with him you would only eat it once or occasionally but it is not as outrageous as some here believe.
Indeed!
I think for the 3 course fixed menu it actually is better value, but the hot dog really did look worth it. The condiments & quality of it I think for sure elevated it. It looked delicious❤️.
I am working my way through your channel and its excellent work. Love all the way in England, UK🇬🇧👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the 3 course menu is the way to go, but the hot dog, even on its own, was really good!
For sure, it looked like every bite was magic!
I just thought that I would share something about me…
1) I have had a painting on my wall of New York since I was 19yrs old & always wanted to go.
2) I love watching Michelin Star restaurants, or little hidden gem restaurants, while eating something delicious. Does anybody else do this? I just love everything about taking food to another level❤️
Anybody who see’s this, whats something cool about your life/food? 💐
@lauj888 Nice! Food is one of my favorite things to talk about as well from fancy Michelin starred restaurants to humble establishments. I hope that you get the chance to visit New York!
Thank you, I would for sure love to visit New York, just never got around to it.
Your reviews are great, and I will continue to watch😊👏🏼
@@lauj888 Thank you! I appreciate it!
It looks totally worth it to me. It looks like an amazing quality sausage and this is coming from a German.
It was definitely a great sausage!
Have you tried the Costco dog, $1.50 with soda. It's pretty good.
I have. It's a great deal and it's pretty satisfying.
Pretty pricey especially since I started with Oscar Meyer and Orange Julius. But since you can turn it into a chill cheese spicy bacon dog I'd try it
Yeah, the variety of condiments were really unique!
They only think its amazing because they paid $29 for it 😂
Just like the people at Salt Bae's Restaurant. Yet all he does is rip off his Customers. All you need is a few people to try it once. With millions of Tourists they just keep coming and that is how these places stay alive, because people are always willing to try it once.
Not really a hot dog fan but great review. I should probably check it out with my friends. Also if you ever have a chance come check out Al Coro :) (where Del Posto used to be). I don’t know if you’ve heard but we’re unfortunately closing after Christmas. We were bought by Tao so we’ll see what gunna happen lol. it’s a bit expensive. I know we aren’t really “friends”, though I love your vids and am a fan. If you do happen to book a Resy feel free to say Lee (my name haha) referred you. The Menu is online so you can also check before you sit down. Love the video :)
Thank you! Yeah, I heard that Al Coro is closing. It's a shame. I wish that I had the chance to visit, but right now it's a bit costly for me.
Re: is a hot dog a sandwich, love how you concluded you don't give a damn!!! 😂🤣 I'm going to try Mischa and their obnoxious hot dog next week because of your review!
Haha! I hope you enjoy it!
happy thanksgiving&christmas! will make sure to add to my bucket list when I go to new york in the future
Thank you! Happy holidays as well!
It's all the chicken lips in it that makes it that expensive. 😂😂😂
Haha!
At first I balked at the price, but then taking into account it's quality - as you attest - the bun, condiments, and that it was a sit down meal in pleasant settings, and of course it's in midtown where the price of everything is over the top, I could see myself shelling out a few bucks for it. The entire package of appetizer, the dog, and dessert for $45 seem almost reasonable, all things considered.
Yeah, getting the hot dog with the special lunch menu is really the way to go.
I do so enjoy seeing you consume food in various establishments. Long days and pleasant nights to you.
Thank you so much!
It's a half pound frank with several gourmet toppings and a nice bun. I would totally pay $29 for that once.
I thought it was worth it. Especially to at least try once.
That meal looked pretty darn good, and the restaurant was quite lovely. Here’s a book recommendation: The Spy and The Traitor by Ben MacIntyre. It’s an exceptional nonfiction story. Have you ever read it?
No, I haven't read that one yet, but I appreciate the recommendation!
If you did a blindfold taste test I bet the two-dollar hot dog at Costco would win
Okay 👍🤣🤣🤣 and you get a COKE😅
That did look very good, all the beautiful condiments and it was really nice and substantial. Jay Rayner is great, I read his reviews in the Guardian newspaper.
It was really good! I agree! That was the first time that I've read anything by Jay Rayner and I really enjoyed his writing.
Seriously, for what you got-in NYC-that isn’t bad. I haven’t gotten a hotdog out in decades, but if I were in NYC, I would give it a try.
Yeah, the set menu is far more reasonable than getting just the hot dog. It's definitely worth trying!
@@Jamesnu I make home-made Caesar salad and when I see it in a restaurant, I try it. I have only ever had a couple really good, real Caesar salads. Paired with a hotdog and crème brûlée? Brilliant
It seems preposterous that New York city is now more expensive to eat out at when compared to Switzerland. They don't serve the same American style hot dogs (just a plain hot dog on a bun) at any restaurants that I live close to in Switzerland but if they did it would cost at most CHF18 about 20USD... not 29USD...
This hot dog is definitely expensive even for NYC. There are much more affordable places throughout the city.
Former Chicago Hot Dog Emporium Hot Doug’s is the only place where I would gladly pay $10-$15 a dog , like the Fois gras Hot Dog made from duck sausage with spicy mustard and medallions of fois gras resting end to end across the bun. THAT was heaven in a bun!
I know what you mean. When Hot Doug's was about to close I still lived in Chicago so I took a day off work, waited hours in line and had the most amazing meal of hot dogs. One of them was the duck sausage with foie gras and it was indeed heavenly!
I know plenty of flyover states I've been to where I'd pay 29 bucks for a good hot dog, but NYC? So many good hot dogs to be had. I'll take James' word for it, but I'll try something else at Mischa and hit the carts for my dogs.
It's definitely a good hot dog, but yeah, a lot of their other dishes look even better and are more reasonably priced.
no glizzy is worth $29
All in all you probably sold me the hot dog is probably worth it but honestly it seems more like a gimmick to attract people but at least they put effort into making it seem like it wasn't one.
EDIT: Going to now have a hot dog for dinner see what you done, it won't be anything like Mischa one but that's how well you described the hot dog now I need to eat one.
Haha! There's nothing like a good hot dog. Enjoy it!
Congrats on 20k!
Thank you so much!
The Ceasars salad needed a gourmet cheese added! Ceasars salads must have cheese!
Yeah, that would've been nice.
That actually looks very tasty and justifiable price.
It was really good!
im from NJ and this made me want to go here lmao@@Jamesnu
Best hotdog of all time is the $1.50 hotdog from Costco! Period.
It's definitely probably the best hot dog deal at least.
I luv how he did it every bite was different. That's the way I would have done it.
Nice! It definitely made every bite exciting.
That salad looked pretty good to me, and the condiments look incredible. You have made me curious if there is a difference between a hot dog and a sausage on a bun (beyond the hot dog/sandwich question). Creme Brulee looked average. Great review!
Thank you! Yeah, besides the hot dog, it was a great meal overall.
What about a hot dog from a can on white bread?
Is it worth 29$ alone most likely not but the 42$ menu is not that bad of a deal, seen way worse deals. Its something I would try it when traveling to NYC
Yeah, getting the hot dog with the $42 menu is far more reasonable.
Red grape tomatoes would have added contrasting color and heightened salad.
I agree. The dish definitely needed some color.
For $29, Mischa should have also supplied a glass of Glenmorangie 18 y.o.
That would've been nice!
Just found your channel in the last few days and enjoying your content and this hot dog tho pricey looks delicious! Thanks
Thanks for the support!
If you typically eat once a day like me. Than 29 dollars isn't bad really. That is if you chose to dine out. Sure you could probably make if for like 5 bucks at home
Yeah, it always depends on the situation. The restaurant experience is nice, but eating at home is almost always more affordable.
Thanks for showing the menu, the lobster roll was so expensive it required simple math to figure the cost.
Thanks for watching!
Im going to have to give this a try just cant tell anyone 😂 cant wait for my next NY trip its been since 2017
Haha! I hope that you will have a good time in New York.
@@Jamesnu havnt had a bad time yet but people trying to sell me their mix cds is a little annoying 🤣
@@queeffairy Haha! I know what you mean.
THE BEST HOT DOG I had WAS a SHOFAR JEWISH AND THE BEST bagel SAME PLACE
Back the kitchen ,they are saying.. a sucher born every day 😮
it's funny you showed shake shack as an example of a simple cheap burger considering you can easily spend $20 there on a burger, fries and a shake. Five guys burgers are going for like $13 now and tons of people get them delivered which costs around $25 with everything included. So yea it's crazy that people act like $29 is an "insane" price for this hot dog when it's normal to spend nearly that much on a fast food meal delivery. Although that says a lot more about the price of delivery services and fast food than it does about the fine dining hot dog.
Indeed. Shake Shack isn't the cheapest when it comes to fast food, but I really more so wanted to showcase the difference between a good quick type of burger and a luxurious fine dining example.
@@Jamesnu those prices you showed at the papaya shop look stunning. Almost makes me wish I lived in New York. I want that Papaya drink and hot dog so bad,. especially at that price
@@nomorenames5568 Yeah, that's a nice place! Good food for a good price!
Meanwhile, there are still parts of the world where people make $2 a day.
Great video James... Keep it up!!
Thank you!
It looks pretty solid. I’d try it once.
It's definitely exciting to try.
Only in NYC could this business model ever happen.
Indeed!
Just look at the location. $22 dollars go to the restaurant’s rent, $4 for a hotdog.
Do people realize what $29 gets you at a Manhattan restaurant? Not much- I'm down for it!
Yeah, Manhattan is expensive!
If anyone wants the best hot dog in the world, go to the streets of seattle. They gotta strong hot dog game out there.
I definitely have to check out Seattle sometime then.
Waiting for a table to open at a pool hall in Bangkok and can't think of a better way to pass the time then watching your video. Cheers bro!
Nice! Cheers!
Made me hungry watching this
It was a great lunch!
The hot dog itself is probably like having a solid 16 sandwich given its size. What makes it worth a lot more are the high quality fixins.
Yeah, and some of those were some pretty unique toppings.
That looks so much better than the steak videos I’ve been watching, raw steak
It was a good hotdog!
Nice vid! Where are you from btw, can't place the accent, subtle as it is😅
Thank you! I'm originally from Chicago.
Awesome review. So pleased to learn that you enjoyed the presentation and the meal. I adore elevating standards to exclusives. Thanks again for a great and honest review....and right near my home! Loving the scruff by the way.
Thank you! Yeah, I really appreciate when a restaurant takes a simple dish and can reinterpret it in a new way.
Looking much better than the average hot dog. Looks like a German Bratwurst with Brötchen (roll) which costs app $ 2,50 in Germany😂😂😂😂
It was definitely expensive, but it at least was sizeable.
I’ll stick with Costco $1.50 foot long dog
That's a bargain that can't be beat!
matzo ball soup mightve been better IMHO. But that lunch prix fixe does sound like a good deal. Not surprised you enjoyed the dessert. the chef is a dessert wizard.
Yeah, I would've liked to try the soup, but I had a taste for a salad that day.
for health :)
@@Jamesnu
Damn they don't even give you fries with that
Yeah, but fries would've been nice.
You can get a juicy hotdog at 7-eleven for $1.99
You can get the Costco hot dog for even less.
Curious how the matzo ball soup is
Me too. Normally, I probably would've gotten that, but I had a taste for a salad that day.
No way as good as my grandmothers I assue you. Her matzoh balls were to die for. LOL.
What’s up James. If you had to choose one restaurant to eat at the rest of your life THATS NOT A MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT which restaurant are you choosing?
That's a tough question. I would really have to think about it, but it would have to be a place that has a wide variety of food. Even with good food I can get bored easily.
Although I have never eaten at Mischa, a street vendor can offer better food at a cheaper price! Just go to the NY Yankees game to vendors outside the stadium. A five-star approval!
Of course. A street vendor has less overhead, literally.
Today is Monday $3 for a Chicago dog at Weinerschnitzel got this beat
I love your pasion you are amazing thank you but for me I would go to Billys thank you
Thank you! Billy's is one I still have to try.
How is the size compared to Costcos?
It's probably about the same length, but Mischa's hot dog is much thicker and heavier.
Interesting chinese and korean condiments. Very ethnically influenced.
Yeah, it was an interesting assortment of condiments, but they all worked.
I disagree with the 'condiments" you were given with a 29.00 hot dog. My suggestions; First, a standard 'yellow" mustard if far insufficient. Might I suggested a more hearty full grain German mustard with white wine or horseradish. That far too minced 'relish" would be better off with a rare bright Emerald Chicago relish which is quite hard to find in NYC. I would nix Kimchee altogether and suggest a raw crunchy Red Cabbage Kraut made with bacon and apple. Finally Spicy Texas Chili (no beans) should be served as a side not a tiny cup. The Pimento cheese doesn't make it either. For a large dog the only topping is WHIZ just like on a Philly Cheesteak.
Those are some good suggestions, but I still found that the round of condiments they gave me were sufficient. However, there's definitely a ton that can be added to a hotdog.
I'm a working class guy with caviar tastes, so that dog at Mischa sounds like exactly the kind of thing I'd go for. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching! It was a great hot dog!
I'm glad you enjoyed your hot dog 🌭 at Mischa's. However; I'm sticking with Nathan's hot dogs 🌭 😂😂😂😅
You can't go wrong with Nathan's.
"larger and thicker than average" *feels inadequate*
The the condiments looks pricey. Like paying 5 bucks for a gumball at the gumball machine and getting dipping marshmallow and chocolate dipping sauce on the side.
They were definitely good condiments!
i drank a 14$ bottle of water from my hotel fridge should i do a video on how good it was because i got price gouged?
Wouldn't you take out the sausage and spread some of the condiments on the bottom of the bun, replace the sausage and then top it with the other condiments? Isn't is rather dry otherwise?
That's the first time I've heard of eating a hot dog like that. No, it definitely wasn't dry.
How does it compare to the Costco hotdog?
It's much better, but the Costco hotdog is just an amazing deal.
I don't do fine dining for well only when wanting to try or with other people but I can appreciate something that is refined in such a way that the chef makes it orgasmic in my mouth.
What is STUPID is that local street vendors here price their hotdogs 10+12 bucks a hotdog as if they were fucking Grade A Wagyu Beef...
$29 isn't bad if everything is of high quality and treated w the upmost care. I would totally try this out once after saving haha. jkjk.
It's definitely worth trying. Yeah, I was surprised how costly hot dogs are from street venders these days.
Great review I have to try it now. Does Misha serve special all day or just lunch? I only get Sunday off if no dinner hot dog
Thank you! Unfortunately, I think they only have the special during lunch.
@@Jamesnu what about dinner just dog

No way I use to have a hotdog cart and sold all dogs for $1.50 the good ones and had great sales $30 dogs forget it😮😮😮😮
