A lot of casual fans always thought of Duran as a brawler. To call him a brawler is a huge disservice This guy was one of the best defensive fighters to ever step in the ring. He knew all the tricks of the trade and when in shape and motivated he was as good as anyone ever. Greatest lightweight ever.
For real man. Duran is an eye opener, this most definitely answers the question why he is in the top 5 of other legendary fighters. Duran in boxing is art.
He kinda was a brawler, somewhat like Mike tyson. While many people have a different definition of brawler, my main ideology of the word is a fighter who keeps going on the offensive while combining defensive. He was one of the best boxers, if not THE best fighters in the lightweight division.
Cus D’amato said Duran was the best because he had the most ring IQ. Which can’t be argued against because even though he still had hard punches as he moved up he didn’t knock guys out like at 135. To beat bigger fighters than yourself and not just one fight but to campaign in the higher divisions as a smaller man, you must have great boxing IQ. The Hagler fight is a great example of this as well as the Iran Barkley fight to name some. James Toney another example of this. My two favourite fighters of all time depending on what day of the week it is.
@@erikjon8432 to be fair, to that time it was normal to have multiple professional fights in one year, novadays the usual number is 1 or 2 fights per year

Duran is in my opinion The Greatest. A legend. A pure fearless warrior. Didn’t duck anyone and beat great boxers at their peak. Beat great boxers who were naturally bigger than him and younger than him. People go on about fighters today who have been around for literally five minutes. How great they are. They’re not in the same league as Duran. Hands of Stone walks on water.
yaiqab Exactly lol. Mike McCallum was another guy avoided as well. Duran is great but people tend to exaggerate and neglect certain things about his resume. Even like he was 50 plus fights into his career and fighting guys with less than 5 fights
The greatest fighter in the history of boxing. I've hero worshipped him for over 50 years and shall go my grave knowing I've seen the best of all time.
LEGEND. Look at this guy in his prime -incredible. his defensive skills were historic. NEVER ducked anyone. (unlike todays frauds) Probably the best Lightweight of all time. He was so great he could gain weight and still beat bigger guys even out of his prime ! Thanks for this gem of an upload.
That's the 'mother of all skipping routines'. He inspired me to squat-skip, after reading Boxing Illustrated in '89. He's perhaps the finest to 'Lace up gloves,' since Willie Pep's pomp.
YUP, and he did it when he was out of his prime and had to gain weight. When you hear others like Tyson, Holyfield, Hagler talk of Duran,,,,they revere him and call him probably the Best lightweight ever. Guys an ICON.
People forget, one of his best attributes as well is feinting, he moves his upper body in an effortlessly it makes you think he's going to attack even when he's not
I know Duran lost a few fights to some great fighters. I'm not making excuses for him, but the times he lost he looked out of shape (Hearns), moving up. In weight without a couple tuneups to acclimate (Benitez) or uninspired Leonard 2. Just my humble opinion when Duran was at his best in great shape and focused no one could beat him. Best jump roper I've ever seen by far.
Duran was into his 70+ pro fights by the time he moved up 2 divisions and fought Ray. He had lost some of his motivation which happens to fighters as they get older. Ray took advantage of that and literally bought his Title back. Hearns also beat an unmotivated Duran. Like you wrote, when Duran was in shape and ready to go....he was one of the best EVER.
blite13 I agree with you my friend. I guess the only way to place a bet on him with confidence was to personally see him in training not knowing which Duran was going to show up. I agree 100% when hungry and in shape you knew you had a winning ticket.
Duran was getting over 200 lbs in-between fights. If he could of not done that to himself and stayed in decent condition in-between fights, he would still be fighting today and WINNING, lol.
blite13 Every man has his weakess. Most men have multiple weaknesses be it food women alcohol ect. I don't know if he had other weaknesses because he seemed to have a stable good family life but food for him was for sure. Leonard knew that at that point in his career he was blowing up between fights. That's why they pressured him into a quick rematch so losing all that weight in a hurry would leave him weakened. You would think being who he was that Duran and his manager would have said no until ready because the money would keep coming and a rematch under an ideal situation would be inevitable.
Duran always wanted a big pay day and felt he deserved it. Ray used that against Roberto too. I think Ray had promised a 3rd fight if Ray won......10 yrs later he did. Duran took the money for no mas, in exchange for the belt. It was a farce, but Ray didn't care, he just wanted that belt back and Roberto thought he wouldn't care because he wanted the cash and a 3rd fight. Ray had disgraced Duran so much, he could say Roberto didn't deserve a rematch. The boxing community had turned their back on Duran and it confused him for a while. He regained his form and had what would be a like a 2nd career to other fighters. That history also tells us that Ray knew he could not beat a primed Duran, that makes Roberto's legend even greater, IMO.
Roberto Duran was a Savage !! His training videos / clips are inspiring. Still the best old school boxer I've seen on the rope. Thanks for the upload @Rainy Day Boxing.
Duran, for me, was the greatest among the four of his esteemed contemporaries (Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Tommy Hearns). This man had one of the toughest chins and hardest punches. Great heart, too. Regardless of his mistakes along the way, he proved himself worthy of being an all-time great. No wonder Tyson spoke so highly of this man. My father loves Duran, too.
Not sure how you can say that when he lost to all 3 (including getting knocked out cold by Hearns). But it doesn’t take away from Duran’s mystique because he came up in weight to fight those guys. His glory days was at lightweight and he was absolutely untouchable in that weight class.
Duran was INCREDIBLE top 5 Greatest boxers of all time and my personal Fav what an incredible fighter Roberto Mano DE PIEDRA QA a TRUE ALL TIME GREATS....and best lightweight EVER PERIOD....G.O.A.T.
