- Goodbye Sum 41! They are finally calling it a day giving up their pop punk status as elder statesman of the 90s and 00s genre. However, they're not saying goodbye without bestowing us with some new music to soundtrack their farewell. This is Sum 41's song "Landmines". Let me know if you like it!

Sorry, didn't mean to alarm anyone with the title. If I was saying "Goodbye" I probably wouldn't include the Sum 41 singer in the thumbnail. Anyway! Join my mailing list if you forgive me for the shock: beacons.ai/justinhawkins
Sorry to not read your descriptions properly 😉
I ask myself: None of them hold licenses of any kind, right?😊😅
I'll forgive you if you do another video with Pat Finnerty! (I forgive you either way)
@@HeyImDiO or with the band all together in one! 😀

Its a great song. Sum41 have never really had a dip in form. they became heavier, but have always maintained energy and emotion. great band
I thought they had a dip when that one dude left the band, Man it’s been so long I can’t even remember his name…. The dude that would do like the beastie boys type flow.
But I mean yeah, this is impressive…..for a 2023 pop punk song, it sounds really good.
Steve Jocz the drummer who did the rapping in the parody stuff. @@jeremysiron9622
Brownsound Dave Baksh left too but came back a couple albums ago and has really been around for the best stuff.
@@jeremysiron9622Brownsound. He’s responsible for the majority of their ‘metal’ influence and it’s very apparent in their sound when he left the band (following the release
of Chuck). It’s basically an objective good for the band that he came back in 2015.
Considering Deryck Whibley's well-documented health issues a couple of years ago, he looks great and it seems the band is back to their good old self. Sum 41 alongside Blink 182 used to be the soundtrack of my high-school years.
Yeah I’m really happy he’s looking so good and is back to being creative. It was really scary for a while. It’s kind of a big thing still when Canadian artists do so well (cough, most) and they’ve had a pretty good rep in the industry. So it’s great to see it looks now like all of these guys have got a lot of years left to work on whatever they want and hope they stay happy/healthy.
Same here. And they are still in my daily soundtrack
He was in hospital just last month, I'm not surprised he'd want to take it easy now.
Cannadian genes despite so much he went through, still looks about same
The track was produced AND mixed by Deryck himself. After all those years of working with the one and only Tom Lord Alge, Deryck invested in his own SSL 4000 and has mixed a few of their records on it. It’s nice to hear some guitars in a mix as opposed to new blink.
lmao listen to more than you know the mix is great my boy
lol Tom's guitar is way more prominent than marcs bass. Guitars are the forefront in blink. Don't know what your talking about dude. This new sum 41 mix is dog shit.
@@keygasmSecond that. 😁 Great song.
@@keygasmnah blinks mix is horrible compared to this
@@kennakama1981 I have to agree. The new blink mix almost ruins the whole song.
Watching the guy from the darkness talk about sum 41 is making my 32 year old heart cry happiness
I would love to see you have a conversation with Deryck, Dave, Cone, or Steve, especially considering that they were at their peak in popularity around the same time as the Darkness!
Deryk produces and mixes..absolute legend
Great pop punk song, it's really growing on me.
Yeah a lot of bands from this era sound like a shade of themselves today. Even new Blink album I was like ehhh…haha not horrible, but it ain’t the same. Idk if this sounds like 2000 Sum 41, but I could see them releasing this as a single around 2004-07. It’s 2024, so they deserve serious props for that. It’s hard to recapture magic and put out quality tunes. Im guessing you’re born in ‘89 as well given your handle haha
What a band- so many memories of that era. I remember when they had 4/5 songs on heavy mtv circulation.
Loving Sum 41’s Landmines....but then I love Green Day and it has similar appeal for me. Thank you for being so current Justin.
Listening to these Pop Punk songs is like taking a break back to the days where things were just a bit simpler and more fun. I don't think I appreciated them then as I do now.
Pre 9/11
@@jeanetteking434 Hm, for me, I didn't really get in to music until '02 onwards when I was in uni, so it was more of a post 9/11 for me if anything. I am nothing if not perpetually behind the times, of course.
Never a pop punk fan, but it still is nostalgic for me just because I graduated high school in 2001, (i’m actually nostalgic for a lot of stuff that I didn’t listen to back then but now I realize it was better than I thought at the time)…. I can still appreciate the fact that they’re doing it really well, like they don’t seem like old washed up guys…they have the proper youthful energy still…not bad for a 2023, Sum41 song
Although I've outgrown Sum 41, I do like this return single and respect them for knowing when to hang things up.
Yeah I really liked their early stuff so I like this one. They went a bit dark lyrically for me as years went on got a bit much although their music has always been a great standard sound wise.
Me too, but it's always horribly sad when favourite artists decide they're too old to rock anymore. Sum 41 have some truly outstanding music, I've enjoyed them tremendously but I guess they're sick and tired of it all. That's always heartbreaking.
Life is temporary, though.
That anyone can outgrow a band says everything that needs to be said about a band. Nobody outgrows music that’s actually good!
Been a Sum41 fan since Half an Hour of Power. Seen them a couple of times. Amazing band. Would love to hear your thoughts on their last album (Order in Decline), especially the track, Out For Blood. They've always had a metal edge to them, and that album they really lean in. Anyway, can't wait for the new stuff. Sad to see them go though.
I seen them in 2000 at the opening of the Napanee skate park in Ontario Canada, bought the demo tape and was a fan every since great guys
I've always quite liked Sum 41, loved All Killer No Filler back in the day and the later, heavier stuff is brilliant too, they did it so well. Regrettably I've not seen them live but I fear it might be a bit too late now, oh well, might happen one day!
Love your channel Justin, one of the best live shows I've ever been to was a Darkness gig, I'll never forget you flying above the audience on a tiger whilst belting the high notes out on the Les Paul - brilliant stuff. All the best JH!
I feel like Dave will go down as one of the underrated guitarists of punk/pop punk.
Both him & Tom Thacker deserve major credit for some of their best riffs over the years.
Another one of my favourite bands you've looked at recently! Last few videos have been gold! ❤
I wish it wasn’t the end of Sum 41. It makes no sense when they have a massive following. I hope they’ll un-retire someday!
Goodbye?! Clicked immediately in a panic 😂
Ditto 😂
So did I!
Me too! LOL
Clickbait
Justin is very clever that way.
what a time to be alive , Blink and Sum41 releasing awesome tunes like if we were back in 2001.
Heya Justin seen about the documentary today super excited but how come you guys haven't posted about it just curious. Can't wait to see you in Leeds again before Xmas 🤘
you are correct JUSTIN. but i want to hear your thoughts on the other side of this recording.. the heavy side. john roesch. port colborne ontario canada. your are amazing
They were fantastic when I seen them live in 2003 reading festival.
Saw 😉
@@crankyoldfart did you?
They really bring it live! I saw them last year when they supported The Offspring. It was so awesome! The drums went off! There was so manu childhood memories unlocked (I'm almost 30) they have heavier stuff and more pop punk stuff. They're a great band! I liked the new song 😊
03:41 😂😂😂😂😂
Pleeeease...Could it be possible to invite Roger Taylor and discuss with him some of this kind of stuff, amongst other things??? It would be one of the very best episodes!🤩😉😘
Great idea
i fucking love this man.
Easy on the video titles Jussy. I thought this was the end of JHRA. What a bloody relief!
I'm hoping that more tickets come out for the darkness gig in Norwich, didn't realised they were on sale until they sold out 🤞🏼
are we letting that new chest piece breathe? or was it there the whole time and I didn't notice it? Either way, pretty cool.
1:30 Hellven. That's either Elvish Hell or someone sneezing while they say "elephant."
I'll tell you what I *will* miss.
Mr H's cheery face and witty repartee when he's on tour 😃
It's pop! It's punk! It's really well played and sung. It just doesn't get me in the feels the way straight up UK + US punk did, but I'm of that era. I'm sure this will be a very popular song, as it should be! Oh yeah, the title scared the crap(not literally)out of me. Thanks, Justin!
So just found the channel and I'm absolutely here for it!
As for this one, great stuff and maybe check out "Rise Up". Heaven X Hell is a double album, Pop-Punk is "Heaven" and their more Metal influenced side is "Hell". Rise Up is from the Hell part of the release
The years have been brutal to Deryk, and he's still coming out swinging. Like you they have bacome legends!
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnn!!! 🎶🎶🎶🎸
Good day to you mate. Sorry for beeing away so long. Job is killing me.... - 45 days to Milan gig... countdown is started. Can wait to see you agaaaaaaaiiiiiiin❤
The singer produced and mixed it ;)
I took your advice and started revisiting bands I used to be into.
So, I'm back in love with The Cure, Muse, Afghan Whigs and Korn.
Your'e an inspiration
As teenagers, we had these 5 CDs loaded in the carousel at all times: KoRn - Follow the Leader, AC/DC - Live at Donnington, Bob Marley - Legend, Rage Against The Machine - Self titled, Fishbone - The Reality of My Surroundings. Our combined collections were intimidating, by content and size. Music and musical nerds!😅 Everyday I pluck a classic tune from the cloud. It's fantastic.
@@667neighbourofthebeast nice to see AC/DC in there! Live at donington is a kick a** live album. Variety is the spice of life :-)
You're the Inspiration - Chicago 😂😂😂
@@martinkasper197No no no, dammit I’m going to have this song in my head now! It’s part of my jukebox from hell part of my brain with the songs I hate the most but seem to get stuck in my mind. Peters syrupy vocals…I can’t!
Oh gawd. Not a cool song to hear before treading laps in the pool. That and Baby Shark.😅
I played my first and only show as a lead guitarist at the Chameleon Cafe in Ajax, ON the same month they played there apparently, means nothing to the world but something to me 😆
I played my first gig there as well!
These guys are great musicians. Derek is a hell of a guitarist and too bad it's goodbye because I think they have more music in them.
You're talking about Dave Baksh, he's a really good guitarist. Deryck is the lead singer and his guitar playing is pretty average (although perfectly good.)
Saw them last year with Simple Plan they were awesome. Will be missed.
I guess I thought Derek (the lead singer) had died or was at least on death's door. I believe Avril has mentioned how extreme his alcoholism was during their marriage.
He was in really bad shape at one point in time.
He had a whole bunch of health issues awhile back and did almost died of liver failure due to his alcoholism. He also was hospitalized with pneumonia a few weeks ago.
Will def miss them. Gunna try to see them on tour fersure.
Hey Justin 👋 lol
Ive got to say, growing up with these bands like sum41, simple plan, blink, The Darkness... its certainly been a great year.
You know what bands i think of right beside The Darkness?
All American Rejects and Blue October. About the same time, right?
If there is one album i would want anyone to listen to... it would be Sloppy Meateaters - Conditioned By The Laughtrack. Its a high recommend from me. Personally i like the garage band sound style of the pop/punk rock variety. A little prog rock and a little screamo.
Coheed and Cambria, A Day To Remember, Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail, Silverstein, Motion City Soundtrack, Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, The Used
Too many great bands. Im just happy to see such a great genre coming back finally.
Ive had both Fred from TBS AND THE GREAT JUSTIN reply to me on previous videos and Fred even commented on one of MY videos 😊. I couldn't be any more happier
Well the plan is that the new album is going to be a double album. First album is going to go back to their pop punk roots and second album is going to be their hard rock modern sound. I’m excited for the new album.
I enjoyed that which surprised me and it was Deryck Whibley and Mike Green who produced the song as well as writing it.
I watched the Sum 41 video earlier, seen the thumbnail and wasn't worried in the slightest!
Justin should have left a 30 second pause at the end ,then ‘on the ice’
Heaven x Hell= don’t matter cause we love you Justin!
HahA I said earth before you came out with it! What validation!
Love your videos. I don’t want to piss you off, but you kinda look the singer from The Darkness.
Found Waldo 6:32. Another hit from Sum-41, I expected nothing less from this group.
They told that Heaven is going to be the pop punk album and hell will be the heavy metal songs.
my ex's band used to play with another band that dave was in. i never actually knew sum41 was still together until a couple years ago, but always been a fan of their music since i was like 13. cool to see they're putting out one last thing for saying bye for real
Ha, great minds?! I said "Earth", while waiting for your answer the Heaven x Hell formula. ❤
Please consider reviewing the acoustic solo work of Jonathan Hulten, former guitarist of Tribulation. It is brilliant work. An interview work also be great. Thanks Justin!
Check out sum 41s last singles 4 years ago such as "out for blood". Heavy as fuck with some impressive guitar solos 🎸
Hi Justin, love your hat, for the kind of music it is I think they have done it well, look after yourself. ❤️
Please do a thing with your favourite guitars ,strings ,picks, etc. practicing and all that . That would be great .
YES
Sounds great to me. I feel transported to summer 2001. Rocking out in a parked car (wasn’t old enough to drive lol) or listening to them on my discman. Watching music videos on mtv. What a time.
Awesome song! Takes me back to my youth in the late 90's.
All of their more serious metal stuff is great, but the happier sound is by far the pinnacle of what they do. I'm glad they returned to this.
Their best stuff was a mix of the two, like the solo in In too deep, the riffs in fat lip, makes no difference, hell song
I’m sad it’s their final album / tour soon 🥲🥲🥲
I'm gonna to go ahead and jam out fatlip right now
The new tattoo suits the guitar now! 🖤❤
The Sums.
It's got me hangin' on. So there's that.
Deryck Whibley (Former spouse of Avril Lavigne, whom engaged Mod Sun, whom was inspired and mentored by Travis Barker.), I thought, resembled my elderly neighbour, Miss Whibley (Deceased, unrelated (Unproven😅.).). I love those guys and woman and lady.😊😅

My favorite pop punk band these guys are the best sad they are "retitring"
This type of music makes me think of the movies ‘American pie’ era stuff. Hey liking the shirt and the tattoo action going on today. Man you got a lot of tats.
Haha ok so two things: The fakeout goodbye title and the extending the conversation to just a tad over 8 minutes. Justin... you have a great social media manager.
Time for another Stones video.
Deryck records and produces their music. Very talented. I don’t know about final mixes and mastering. But the last few records were him.
Love the intro , made me laugh . Thank you 😂
"Not to be confused with the other 7761 Matt Maki's" 😂
you make me laugh, man. thank you.
It might just be me, but all I could hear in these clips was Mr. Brightside (The Killers).
Classic album reviews, reviews you. Great review. He wants to meet you. Would be great!🤘
Slightly related yet not but I'd love to see a video of Justin doing a review of the band Rufio, either the track Above Me or Science Fiction. Underrated band from back in the day I think.
When lighting farts you need a gauze to prevent a flashback, a distrastrous outcome it must be said.
Undies and a good pair of jeans may not comply with ISO regulations but do the job.
Love this! Good to watch 🤘🏻
don't think they'll be on tour soon- Derrick was in hospital last week, unless there's a update....
great song though man :)
Opening is very The Killers.
Not for me, not for me, not for me, oh oh!!! 😏
Getting old sucks
Saw sum41 new found glory and saves the day when hey were coming up opening for face to face
Fast forward 22 years later 😅
I would have done the "on".
01:53 You did it again! Brilliant!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
04:04 😂

i actually think Deryck mixed it.. He has been doing that for some time now
Panic stations at the title, geez❤😂

I think the ending is great. They leave you... "hanging".
it was very GOB of Deryck to put in the woah's.
