  • Detailed instructions for tying a Leisenring Spider.
    Recipe:
    Hook: 3X-heavy black nickel nymph hook (here, a Fulling Mill 51 05), size 14.
    Thread: Yellow, 8/0 or 70-denier.
    Rib: Gols Ultra Wire, small.
    Body: Natural light hare’s mask dubbing.
    Hackle: Hungarian partridge.
    Head coloring: Brown Sharpie.

    Nice one Tim! I was shown that method of creating a "dubbing rope" to make bodies about 50 years ago - been using it ever since. First time I have seen it used in a video. If you dub the noodle a bit thicker and longer, then fold about 30% of the noodle back on itself it will twist up into a firm, tapered rope that will form a distinctly segmented and tapered body that doesn't need a rib.

    For years I've seen a little yellow Isoperla on Van Campens. Leisenring was a genius. Maybe this yr I'll fish only flymphs.
