Will we miss the Ford Focus when it's gone? 2024 Ford Focus Active review

  • It's no secret that Ford is going to kill off the Focus, instead choosing to, erm, focus (sorry) on EVs and SUVs. We sent Rebecca Jackson to try the latest version of the Ford Focus - here in rugged Active trim - to find out if Ford's once-perennial hatchback still has life in it. She'll show you the cabin, engine choices, boot space and back-seat practicality, and of course - take it for a drive.

I have a 2010 1.6 petrol focus with at the time of writing this has 194800 miles on the clock, it's serviced at regular intervals and the only major work done is a clutch and 2 timing belts and it still drives really smooth.

As always, Ford adopts the wrong strategies. Taking away a great car like this and putting in an unreliable electric SUV is at least innocent. It is no surprise that its role in the automotive world has become only a supporting role

Was expecting Tim and got Rebecca. Bonus. Just getting rid of a 2019 focus. Nice spacious and reliable car. Trim and quality not great in areas but will miss the focus when gone😢.

I’m really surprised Ford is abandoning this sector. They’ve killed off the Ka, Fiesta & Mondeo and as a result their European market share has declined. The Puma is about the only model driving volume sales.

It’s the way things are going - I’m now on my 4th focus right from the first ever model to the current car. As for their declining market share I wouldn’t be surprised if that has more to do with the internal cabins of their cars and the lack of quality compared with the competition.
I’m getting ready to change my car (will be going for an SUV). I’ve test driven several cars, including the brand new facelift Kuga and every car I’ve driven has had a better higher quality interior than the Ford…..they really need to up their game if they want to stay competitive for the price they are charging.

They probably go in the way GM go, out of Europe all together.

I have a 2020 Focus Active X Vignale. It has leather seats, it’s an Auto and for me it is one of the best cars I’ve owned, the 2.0 Ecoblue engine provides superb acceleration, smooth power delivery and endless satisfaction. It is a great car and my 4th Focus, each generation is better than the last. Shame Ford is ceasing production, seems like I’ll reluctantly have to switch to a Toyota Corolla😥.

My wife is still running around in her 2003 mark 1.6 ebony which she has had from new it has 65.000 miles on the clock but because it has been looked after runs just as good has the first day she picked up from the Dealers it can still out manoeuvre more modern cars. The reason why it has a low mileage is my cars are the work horses because they have been diesel I am on my third one since she got her focus why Ford and other car companies want to do away with the breed and butter vehicles is beyond me

I bought a 2020 top of the range focus from new, and then after almost 4 years, I started to hear about Wet Belt problems and cracked engine blocks leading in both cases to the eco- boost engines seizing up. This is happening to vehicles with as little as 60,000 miles on the clock. Ford apparently isn't interested in GB, although in America, recalls have become standard practice.
Well I can't take the chance of my car suddenly going up in flames and so yesterday I bought a Toyota to replace it.

It's definitely easy on the eye externally, but, for me, the interior is......well.......meh. The rear seats look cheap and not a place I'd want to sit, plus the dash, whilst functional, is just bland. Still, if Ford addressed this, then it'd be a great car.

I recommend people NOT to buy a Ford as these cars require a lot of regular expensive repairs.
Best go for more reliable and durable Japanese cars like Lexus, Toyota, Honda.
I recommend people to get a Lexus NX - perfect size, perfect suitability, very comfy seats and top quality driving performance in terms of efficient fuel economy.

I had a UX. Appaling car. Huge SUV smaller than a fiesta inside and no economy. That is the UX irrespective of what I drive which is a stage 1 mk4 Ford Focus ST.

Are you telling me my 2020 mk4 ST 2.3L ecoboost 330PS 515NM run without a single issue for four years and is loaded with more than you could load on any other german car, oh and mine is not restricted so 170mph on an empty autobahn is to quote you "sh%T"? 😉😂 I know some Ford owners have sadly had issues.

I'm on my 3rd Electric car since 2015 and thought they'd have much better range and recharge times but the reality is different, add to this batteries take longer to charge when cold, this is an issue at high power DC chargers, at home it won't matter but either way IT'S an inconvenience.
Add to that , I drive a VW id3 tour 5 with the larger battery and it weighs 2 Tonnes !!! and you can really feel it on the road, it's reliable and at 75,000 Kms not given any issues and it's not had it's first service yet, that's due at it's 3rd Birthday which is in October 2024.
Worst thing about the car is the outrageously poor ergonomics, minimalist interior with no real buttons, no easy access to climate control as you would expect, everything is in menus and it irritates the hell out of me.
I drove my Mothers 2010 Fiesta 1.4 Petrol yesterday and it was a lot of fun, hard to explain, yes EV have bags of torque but the Fiesta felt so light, I had a ball. Probably hearing the engine also, I miss that driver engagement. I was surprised at how well it drove for the age and having almost 100,000 miles on the clock !
Now ford and other European manufacturers shouldn't abandon ICE especially with synthetic fuels appearing in the next few years and already have HVO100 100% bio diesel, this can be used in existing cars without modification and offers better performance and cleaner engines.
We shouldn't abandon ICE tech because in my opinion HVO100 is probably much more environmentally friendly than the production of lithium batteries, the manufacturing of batteries alone is toxic and contaminates vast quantities of fresh water because fresh water is needed in the production of lithium. Large areas of land have to be dug up and what about cobalt ? this comes from mining using manual labour and it's quite toxic.
It's a mistake moving to crossovers and eliminating the hatch and estate cars as these are far more practical, while crossovers look big in reality they are quite small inside, + they are heavier and for what ?
I see Ford has also got on the touch screen bandwagon no real buttons for climate, radio, this is a fail for me, been there done that and it's an absolute appalling situation and I blame Tesla and all the other manufacturers had to follow suit instead of keeping what was tried and tested and worked well for decades.
It's not just me, there's many write ups on the internet to show many people including auto journalists are not happy about this ergonomic nightmare cars have become.
I'd definitely choose the smaller screen in the new focus for proper climate control, while the smaller screen provides the media such as car play and sat nav and this is all the screen should be for in a car in my opinion.
I have to say that I will never again buy a car so focused on screens for basic functions, even if I have to buy and older car I will. It's certainly a bad time to buy cars now......
