Kia XCeed vs Ford Focus Active

  • Battle of the faux-by-fours...
The 2022 Kia XCeed takes on the latest Ford Focus Active - is there a clear winner?
It's not news to anyone that SUVs are hugely popular right now, but you know they're reeeeally popular when traditional family hatchbacks start pretending to be SUVs.
Take the Ford Focus Active, for instance. This is, in essence, a regular Focus hatchback that's been made to look a little more like an off-roader by adding chunkier bumpers, plastic wheelarch protectors and a raised ride height.
The Kia XCeed, meanwhile, takes a slightly different approach. Underneath, it uses most of the same mechanicals as the Ceed hatchback, but from a bodywork perspective, it shares almost nothing with its stablemate: the front doors, and that's it. The question is, which approach results in the better car?
In this CarGurus UK video review, Ivan Aistrop puts the two cars head-to-head, and compares them in every area, including quality, technology, practicality, and of course, what they're like to drive.

After watching countless reviews and many visits to dealerships, my wife and I have just ordered the new Xceed 1.5T GT-Line. Never ordered a new car before and only writing this here as it may help some people. Not only does the new 2023 facelift look like a top-end modern car but the interior could not be ignored compared to anything else in the range - especially for the price (not to mention its where you will spend 99% of your time with the vehicle). With the £2.5k dealer deposit contribution and an extra £1500 off from the dealer then a warranty that beats all others, it was a no-brainer. Never been a Kia before man but I am a man of logic and reason. The flat range at the bottom of the revs mentioned in this video could be down to the assisted clutch (takes some getting use to) but I actually found the Kia to be incredibly smooth. I couldn't feel any kick or lag from the turbo, it just kinda got up to speed without you noticing. Zero body roll (expected more than the Ceed due to suspension lift but none at all) and much tighter and more responsive steering than expected for a family faux-by-four. Need to be clear, the GT-Line is what stands out, can't say I would be anywhere near as convinced with the entry level model (Xceed 2). Is it an exciting drive? No. (I am a lifelong petrol head who has been riding / racing superbikes, Motocross etc for over 22 years). But is it enjoyable? Hell yeah. Its incredibly comfy, heated seats and heated steering wheel as standard (+loads more) has more than enough power for public roads, to overtake or even have a bit of fun. You don't buy a faux-by-four for performance, you buy it for the practicality and "jack of all trades" feel. The Kia ticked every box bar the star brand power (but that is not worth another £10-£15k minimum from the likes of Audi, Merc etc). And with the new Kia models being like this, I think Kia is already climbing the ranks very quickly in public opinion.

I came from a current generation Audi A4 Avant to a Kia Ceed Sportwagon and don't regret it, the car is solid in every area backed by the 7 year warranty although I doubt that it will be used because it's screwed together so much better than the Audi

Me and my family have been with Kia for over 10 years. THe brand has come on leaps and bounds. I've always said, for the price, the standards and spec are really top tier for your money.
Plus the 7 year warranty and our local dealership being amazing, always looking after us and valuing us...Kia is an extremely underrated brand to be with.
I got given the new X ceed hybrid for the day when my Rio GT went for its service....and i fell in love with it.
It's probably showcases the best of what Kia have to offer. And they will only get better.
Welcome to the Kia family :D

So 3 months in since the Xceed arrived and I’ve got to say, I love it even more than I first thought! Having done long motorway journeys, hectic commutes and some countryside thrashing, it’s hit every single mark. My 6ft 4 brother in law fit in the back with plenty of leg room and head room for a 3 hour journey with no complaints. We put 3 suitcases, 2 backpacks + large dog bed in the boot / trunk alone (minus dog of course lol). Engine is running even smoother now it’s been ran in and all the mod-cons have made it all very enjoyable. If I don’t like something or have some justified issues, I would not sing its praises as I have. But this is costing me approx £200 per month LESS than the closest competitors, with over double the warranty and including annual servicing.
What would I improve / change? For the money - nothing at all. A little more boost / power would be nice now and then but not worth thousands more. All things considered, I’m really struggling to find fault with the car & deal.

The choice is a no brainier. Labour rates in my local Ford garage are £154 an hour. With the Kia, the warranty is four years longer than the Ford. Kia put their money where their mouth is. Even Renault offer a five year warranty. For a private purchaser it has to be the Kia.

It sounds like the Ford Focus Active is *exactly* the same approach as the Rover Streetwise (take a hatchback, stick on rugged plastics, increase the ride height).
I'm sure a lot of people poked fun at that car but almost 20 years later, apparently we now take that idea seriously?

I have an active not to be like a suv but to have a fun car that has enough clearance for the interesting roads in my area. I've had regular estates and hatchbacks before and I was often needing to take extra care on some roads and avoiding other routes completely. I'll likely have a normal estate again at some point but for ease of life the active has been excellent.

A great comparison Ivan. the faux by four is OK by me as my skeleton could do with a replacement so they are easier to get in and out of. If I was in the market for one of these the winner by a nose would be the Kia. While I prefer a 'drivers' car the Kia is just more practical but the physical climate knobs and buttons would seal the deal. A bigger screen might be nice to look at but arguably could be just a little more of a distraction. The longer warranty is a bonus as well. I'm sure I'd miss the better Focus driving dynamics though on those increasingly rare occasions where you get the chance to enjoy it.

I would get a cx3 2.0L but i assume being a 2.0L it will drink petrol and cost more to insure ?? too much choice on the market, focus is 1.0L so less power but more economical

I currently have a Ford Puma ST line x 155.
Once that 3 year warranty runs out I'm thinking Kia, that long warranty is very appealing.
OK the Ford may well do a few more mpg but that will be quickly wiped out with a few trips to the Ford garage for out of warranty repairs and you will get some.
Don't get me wrong the Puma is good to drive though, but I drive on real roads at normal speeds, not on a race track...I think I'll be able to cope with the Kia and it'll be absolutely fine in real everyday driving.
Ford and other mainstream manufacturers really need to get up to speed on warranty, 5 years minimum please.

Nice comparison. The only thing that amused me was WLTP data part xD Put your family and the holiday luggage in both, hit the motorway and you'll discover that this lawn-mower-capacity Ford engine uses twice as much or even more fuel than WLTP claim. That's the result of bureaucrats telling engineers what to do.

Just bought a 72 plate facelift Kia XCeed 1.5 T-GDI ISG 3 and honestly you will NOT be disappointed with the performance, the looks, the practicality, the build quality and just the car overall! Once you get used to revving it just a tad higher when you first pull off you will not recognise it ever again. 7 year warranty, 100,000 mile and they DO NOT try and get out of any warranty claim whatsoever when you claim is why Kia will be one of the top top brands in the future. I like cars with a more dynamic drive, the practicality is still fairly useful and more legroom is important for me also being a tall person myself. If my sister were to sit behind me I would want her to feel as comfortable as possible. Don't get me wrong though, Kia's are much better than they were in the past and way nicer and if money was not an issue I would have both on my driveway. In Germany the amount of softtouch is the same in both. What I really appreciate in the Ford are the door compartments lined with fabric (had to google the words for it 😉), even in the rear doors!
