      Commonwealth Realm In my view I feel that breath of the wild kinda let me down. First off when I was fighting the yiga clan guys boss I had a harder time with his minions then the boss. And the Devine beasts were good well done. But ganon I was let down it was too easy. All you had to do was keep moving to the side or away from ganon then you can't loose. And if you slipped up, all you had to do was use a hearty food and get all your hearts back and some. Then with the dark beast ganon he can't even hit you so all you have to do is equip the light bow that you get from ganon then shoot the glowing spots from a distance away.

    OoT was the game that blew my mind. Nothing since has had the same impact.
    I think if you played both for the first time now the BoTW is obviously light years ahead in graphics and world design.
    But as a 12 year old in 1998, OoT was at the right place and right time for me.

    • @commonwealthrealm
      @commonwealthrealm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The power of nostalgia. I felt that way myself. But when you look at the sheer numbers and the fact that I have been playing this game non-stop since its launch and still find new secrets and content, is what makes it the ultimate experience for me. It is incredibly close though, the ending of BotW was not on par with the rest of the game. And replacing the dungeons with divine beasts was a mistake.

    • @86Rikki
      @86Rikki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Commonwealth Realm I would love to see Ocarina of Time remade/reimagined with the BotW engine. It seems a shame for all the development in that engine and for only one game to be made. Then it would have the best of both worlds.

    After playing Ocarina all the way through for the first time this year, I can say that Ocarina is more "badass", if you will, hero game that tests the player through memorable dungeons and plot points that seem overwhelming at first but are so satisfying to beat and leave you feeling accomplished, like a hero. Breath of the wild is the adventurer's and tinkerer's game that brilliantly uses physics and elements to forge your own path in a sandbox like world. However, Ocarina does have some good exploration elements and BOTW has some good hero moments. Both do different things brilliantly.

      All OoT is just nostalgia, that is the main reason people put it so highly. I first played it on the 3ds, so I didn’t get that feeling. Also, I have to give it to you, the bosses and dungeons in BotW suck. But, the immersive and giant world makes it way better than OoT for me.

    I kind of have to disagree with the replay value of botw. The best moments in this game came from the sense of discovery and constantly finding new things while exploring. • @timmy3441
      @timmy3441 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      For me, BotW is easily one of the most replayable games of all time. I actually think replaying this game is more fun than continuing on the same save file forever.
      I was initially a little bit sad when I first beat the game because I thought that would be it and I'd seen most of what the game had to offer, but when I started my second playthrough I ran off in a completely different direction from the plateau and was surprised how different my experience ended up being. Early game is super interesting too when everything's a bit more of a struggle and you aren't running around with an inventory full of 5-shot Lynel bows and 80 damage one-handers. I ran through locations I'd never seen/had forgotten even existed since I had usually skipped them by fast travelling.
      Plus it was cool to re-experience a lot of the earlier story elements which I barely remembered because I hadn't seen them in 90+ hours of play. Playing through the game again helped me appreciate the game as a whole and I ended up liking its story a lot more, which felt a bit fragmented on my first playthrough with large spaces of time between each part.
      I've since come back and done multiple playthroughs to try different things. Divine beasts in a completely different order, finding the memories in chronological order since I know where to find them now, doing a run where I went straight for Ganon after leaving the plateau, all sorts of things. I initially finished the game over 6 weeks ago now and I still find a reason to come back every day and play for at least a couple of hours, and very little of that is done on my original save file.

    Having grown up with OOT, imagine this. You're running along, you're in a dungeon, and your master sword runs out of energy. Now you're forced to use a tree branch too fight. That's why I avoid most things. Again, call me crazy.

I can't think of any other open world games out there where the weather can impact the player in so many ways, or where the AIs are so great. Visually, there is no comparison to make here... Oot was a clunky, poorly designed offense to the franchise. They should have let the same 4-year-olds who designed the gameplay do the art in finger-paints (then it might have been bearable to watch)...
      BotW is everything that the original wanted to be, but couldn't do to technological restraints.
      So many people out there have never played the first 3 console titles; they need to stop touting OoT as the "be-all-end-all" and start playing the games that truly represent the series!
      Also, stop complaining about the "lack of story" in BotW. This is Nintendo's chance to say, "Sorry about 'Ocarina' and 'Majora.' Let's continue on the path that 'Wind Waker' began to carve and move on to something worthy of the franchise's history."

      etymike OOT is exactly where it wants to be visually due to the 3DS remake. How is Botw the definitive OOT they are completely different. There is nothing wrong with people critiquing Botw's lack of story. We all know Nintendo could've done much better storywise. Why would Nintendo be sorry about two of it's "greatest hits" games? OOT was and still is a great game. Of course it's not going to be as advanced as Botw due to the technological advances in between the two games time. And why are you implying that OOT one the the highest rated games of all time isn't worthy of the franchise's history?

    I honestly fill Nintendo should just do a complete remake of Ocarina Of Time from the ground up. Imagine Hyrule town inside the castle completely alive with people talking, interactions with them all, and it being twice as bigger inside the town with a lot going on and a lot of mini games, and even a bar/pub to have drinks at before going to the castle. Imagine the same with the villages again with grass everywhere, fireflies and bugs crawling on the logs, and trees, just imagine this. Make the villages twice as big as well again with bars, pubs everywhere, and bring back the same bosses updated and more challenging. OOT is already the greatest Zelda game of all time with the best temples, best music of all Zelda games, and best bosses, I'd love to see it completely remade with the newest graphics, and more bigger areas.

I had so much trouble finding motivation to finish it because it didn't give me anything like what the other games had given me. It may have been my fault for going into the game thinking it would be anything like them, but if I didn't have those "Zelda game" expectations towards this game, then it' wouldn't have been a Zelda game to me

      The thing is that you can play BotW differently everytime you begin a new save file. And that alone has to be commenced. You don't have to 100% BotW (actually I wouldn't recommend doing it). My mentality to this game, is to play as if I was living in Hyrule. Taking one day at a time and enjoying each moment to the fullest.

      @@commonwealthrealm You wouldn't recommend it because it's garbage. Its open world gameplay is repetitive and strewn about with unintelligent design choices. It isn't well put together for the most part. Korok seeds are full of repetitive puzzles, shrines are full of puzzles that can be solved in multiple ways, so the puzzles are in general simplistic because the game doesn't confine you to solve them like a real puzzle should. Cheesing puzzles is not good game design.

Not to mention the amazing mask collection and mask powers.

    I love OOT. And I've defended it for years from people trying to say it doesn't deserve it's praise.
    But think BOTW is far superior. I'd gladly sacrifice a linear story for the ultimate level of freedom that BOTW gave us. It's not like the story in Zelda has ever been mind blowing anyway, especially in recent years.
    As for dungeons, I don't miss longer dungeons one bit. A lot of the dungeon length is just padding and puzzles that are more tedious than challenging. Divine beasts are fast paced without much filler between puzzles. The only problem with Divine Beasts I have is that they all look the same, even in the boss department. Obviously this is something that's going to change in the next Zelda, but I hope they don't go back to dungeons that take 40 minutes to an hour.

      You remember the Forest Temple because it had good atmosphere and good bosses. But from a level design standpoint it was pretty fucking awful. I'm not saying the Divine beasts are more memorable. But they're definitely more fun to play through from a gameplay standpoint. I don't have to slowly pushy blocks down corridors for five minutes just to make a staircase. And there's no backtracking because I forgot a key.
      If the Divine Beasts weren't all aesthetically boring with bosses that were the same, you'd all be crowing about how Aonuma knocked it out of the park again. Personally I'd rather go through all four divine beasts than a single dungeon in any of the prior Zelda games.

    I'm honestly on the other end when it comes to replayability. As someone who doesn't have the time to play games 24/7, I'm okay with getting games that are only worth playing through once. As long as that "once" is lengthy, entertaining and I can do it how I want. BotW and Fallout for example. And because I don't have the time for it, I just don't feel compelled to start those games again. OoT on the other hand, having played it since I was 10, I've restarted and beaten countless times. Yes, it's because of nostalgia. But if it wasn't as fun as it is nostalgic, I wouldn't do it. (Mario games, for example, remind you of how frustrating it was when replaying rather than how much fun it was.) BotW is lengthy and feels like regardless of how many times you play it and in the different ways, you just couldn't get that nostalgia hit done in a day or two. Which is why I think OoT is better.

      I am with you on this. I am married, have kids, a full-time job and an acre, and I don't have time to play games like I used to have. BotW has taken me a long time, and that is because I simply don't have long stretches of time to devote to it. As such, I don't see myself playing it again before the sequel comes out. I am getting the new incarnation of Link's Awakening tomorrow, and I'll play through that one (I haven't played it, and can't see it taking any longer than it took me to beat A Link Between Worlds). I suspect that the sequel to BotW will take me quite a while to beat, and I don't see myself dwelling on either game more than once.
      I can play Ocarina of Time and beat it in a few days, as I've done so many times now. The size, familiarity and relative of ease of some of the older games makes them re-playable. I am not young and these games aren't getting any easier, and I don't see myself playing them more than once. Twice at the absolute most if they're lucky.

    I'm personally not that big a fan of OoT's Hyrule Field. It may be because I'm not blinded by nostalgia when it comes to this as I was born not in the 90's but the early 2000's. The area is massive, yes, but the space is filled by very little interesting things. There's that weird plant thing and Lon Lon Ranch but besides that it's a bunch of empty space. And considering the visuals of most N64 games haven't held up well these days, it just looks muddy to me nowadays. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the visual splendor of some games today but I'm a hardcore fan of Super Mario 64 and I first played it when I was four and even I can say that it looks pretty ugly sometimes. And Hyrule field just doesn't compare to some of the overworlds in later 3D Zelda games. It's kind of a quality over quantity situation here, as the field is massive but doesn't have much to do in it.

    The only places BotW beats OoT is in areas that OoT wasn't even capable of beating BotW because of technological limitations.
    The truth is that OoT is a vastly more superior game. Its longevity, impact, music, story, and dungeons far outclass BotW. It's the game that literally invented z-targetting and pioneered 3d camera movement and open world gaming.
    Not to mention, am I the only one that considers music to be a huge, important category? This is what I love about the final fantasy games as well. They truly focus on hiring fantastic composers and because of that, they end up selling sound track cds and sheet music for decades after ward. Ocarina of Time got that right. All of my favorite Zelda songs are in ocarina of time. Then again, a musical instrument is literally in the title of the game.
    As a 32 year old man, who played OoT when it originally came out, I was blown away. Gaming was still mostly 2d gaming and side scroller stuff at the time and seeing this game blew my mind out of the water. Still to this day, ocarina is in my opinion, the greatest Zelda game of all time. Oh and Gannon is way better as a humanoid gerudo by the way. Especially one who politically manipulates the royal court into power. It's got a bit of Game of Thrones to it there.

    Both are truly some of the greatest of all time, but I personally think Ocarina of Time is the better game. I found the gameplay to be outstanding. The dungeons were creative, challenging, fun and had you apply your knowledge of the game. The boss fights were also phenomenal. The final fight with Ganon was one of the best final bosses ever. The story mainly focuses on Link and Zelda and felt truly epic. I truly believe it to be better than any other Zelda game and still stands as one of the greatest video games ever.

    The aspects in which Ocarina of Time is undoubtedly superior to Breath of the Wild are the same aspects that Breath of the Wild fails to deliver on, and those aspects are what make me love Zelda.

      Same. The story and music in Ocarina is a complete feeling experience to me. Also the puzzles are better, the dungeons are better, and Ocarina just has a better feel to me. It feels like an actual world whereas Breath of the Wild doesn't due to its over abundance of Easter Eggs that shouldn't exist. Koroks, Romano Ranch, and the Twilight Mirror do not belong in the same world or story. The freedom of choice doesn't automatically make a better experience, it's how it's utilized so to me, freedom isn't an argument, it's simply a difference in gameplay elements being shown.

      Breath of the Wild's focus on freedom is one of its biggest flaws because of how the music and story is weakened to compensate for more freedom, and while their are certain benefits to this style it is not necessarily adding anything substantial in return with the open ended game play.

      It would definitely be amazing, but it would probably suffer the same way skyward sword did in that it was just too similar to the others. One of the biggest reasons oot got rated as high as it did was because it took the Zelda formula established in alttp and perfected it, and in 3D. If tp, ww, and SS had all released before oot, oot would have felt like just another Zelda game instead of THE Zelda game. Botw is sort of the oot of like alttp. It’s taken on a new form of Zelda, and it did it well. Botw 2 will most likely be like oot in that it will probably perfect the formula botw created. But if they do botw 5 more times in a row like they did with the other 3D Zeldas after oot, it will be the same SS situation all over again.

    I see a lot of people hating in the comments because of the outcome of this specific episode, but take the outcome and nostalgia out of it. I love both of these games and have played both of them many times, but this series (or at least this episode) is a perfect setup for a good video game "war".
    They had many different and equally important battles between the two games, and they weren't biased. They were legitimate reasonable conclusions to the battles between these two games. They didn't bash one game, they didn't say anything offensive unless you take serious offense to someone saying your favorite masterpiece is not as good as another masterpiece.
    This video made a great argument for both games, and I loved the setup of how the video was made. I excitingly anticipate more episodes in this series, and you have gained my subscription and my support. Thanks for a great video, I enjoyed all 20+ minutes of it.

      What are you talking about? the same riffs over and over again, with low energy and almost NO Feeling exist in BOTW. Here's a good point: Hateno village, the last REAL hylian settlement. It's track was completely repetitive and not well developed. I will give BOTW Only one better instance in soundtrack. And that's Hyrule castle.

    • @Mcmansonable
      @Mcmansonable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I went ahead and actually Re-listened to the soundtrack, and I still feel entintled to my opinion, you cannot justify a LEGENDARY Series like the legend of zelda having this crap minimalist style. The exceptions are few and far between and most aren't real overworld themes you can hear anywhere else. Hyrule Fields OST is a DISGRACE. But I digress, my exceptions are Hyrule castle, Tarrey town. And Kass was the ONLY Reprieve out on Hyrule field from a boring minimalist soundtrack, and even HE is more repetitive than the song of storms.

      Well, you might be right about considering the less-skilled players. I mean I just beat Dark Souls 3 in January and played BOTW in March so... that might have something to do with it. XD

    Ocarina Of Time is without a doubt the best Zelda game ever made so far. Breath Of The Wild is close, but still can't compete to Ocarina Of Time. I don't think anyone in these comments reading this can dispute the fact that OOT has the best soundtrack and music of all Zelda games. The temple music, to the melodies you play with the ocarina and everything in between is perfect. I loved the Spirit Temple music, and Forest Temple etc... Just amazing, even the towns, villages. Also, the bosses are better designed of all these other Zelda game bosses and just look cooler in every way. However as OOT becomes more dated and more Zelda games come out, one might come out with a killer track, and cool bosses just like Ocarina did. So to me, OOT is still my favorite. Majora's Mask was a close contest but ultimately the bosses weren't as cool, the music wasn't as good except for Song Of Healing, and the lame mechanic of watching the cutscenes between switching masks and some other things overall just wasn't fun. Especially the 3 day cycle although you could slow it down, or reset it, still not fun having to do that.

I am extremely glad to have played more open worlds and other zeldas to know that It would be extremely frustrating (for a fan) to not do things in certain orders... While the order of the dungeons is completely up to you, I personally have made my own "heroes journey" towards it, since... it is what feels right considering other zeldas that I have played, while I feel a lack of feedback from the world towards me I feel extremely free to interact with, which is definitely something I never really felt in other games since most of the time you are being guided through a story, while here I made my own path and my own story, while recollecting the memories of the hero that I did not have the chance to be.

Also the world in breath of the wild was huge I'll admit but it was really empty. In breath of the wild there are only really 3 side quests in the game the are a must to do. 120 shrines, master sword upgrade and upgrading your armour ( breath of the wild tunic I personally used ). In ocarina of time all side quests gave you useful items and upgrades every time. So in my opinion ocarina of time holds the more value to replay then breath of the wild

      Great characters , great story, the game sits perfectly in the middle as not too long and not too short, the world and setting is vast and explorable but not overwhelmingly so like I believe botw is. You easily fall in love with the characters and you get to see those characters and how they change in the future, you feel sadness and regret when you learn they die and most importantly you have a drive to defeat ganon and a hatred for what he's done. The music is catchy and has tons of personality for the areas they're played in and I never get tired of listening. It's an incredible game that has withstood the test of time and I can't stand when people say it's only loved for nostalgic purposes. Hyrule Castle isn't a dungeon, if you walk through the front gate of it you will be right at Ganon. Every other part of the castle is optional and can be skipped.

      My Name you are not right at Ganon when you enter the front gate. Its takes a fair bit of exploration to get you too him.

    The magic of OOT cannot be over stated. The galloping and music when you put the cartridge in, it set you up for something you’ll never experience again from a computer game

    Im just going to say my piece. I think BOTW is better than OOT for quite a few reasons. and most were already stated here. but as far as gamplay functionality BOTW is more seamless than OOT. I remember more times yelling at Ocarina of Time about a jump button, or the weird movement problems, or even issues with aiming, than I have ever with Breath of the Wild. Most of the time when I mess up its a player issue and not a computer one. My only complaint as far as controls is I wish I had to press a or something to start climbing, but it not being required has gotten me out of more problems than in, so I cant really complain. I think OOT restrains are more with its controller than anything. OOT could have played so much nicer on a gamecube style controller, or Playstation style controller without question. and dont give me the bs about the controller being limited by power, it was nintendo trying to gimmick a controller and they almost had with the gamecube but ruined it with the Wii... this is my problem with nintendo, when they made the Wii and WiiU they thought gimmicks, not gameplay or enjoyability, or even their own IP. Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess for example would be much better with a upgraded Gamecube Controller than a Wiimote and Shitchuck, and everybody knows we may never see F-zero again and ARMS is pure bad news for Punch-out. Hell Im still wondering when I am going to get a Open World pokemon game that it needs and has been calling out for the last 10 years. Hell Kanto region alone made massively bigger and a bunch more things to do in bigger cities no longer relying on routes and instead of biomes would be amazing, however neither Game Freak nor Nintendo actually understand what the people want. All of my friends agree with me that right now the main reason to get a switch isnt zelda its Metroid. BOTW was the biggest sign of abandonment on how they screwed over millions of people before releasing a debatebly better console which looks great if it wasnt for the mistrust I have in nintendo at this point I would have already picked one up. *Rant over*
