He's so different than, say, Brooks Koepka or Dustin Johnson, who seem to take pride in being unintelligent and disrespectful of anyone or anything that doesn't directly benefit them. I really like Bryson Dechambeau as well, because he's an original, plus he gets relentlessly bullied by the Koepka/Johnson crowd because he's so much smarter and good-hearted than they are. This reminds me of where I play. Fun though, Sergio played some marvelous golf, his putting was elite. And so did Ricky Flower.
Played there in 1987, nothing like Royal Birkdale with its huge dunes, Hoylake is very flat and shares the land with with a racecourse. But I putted my head off and got around in 75 with a 35 on the back 9...my best score on the “open” courses....at that stage Hoylake wasn’t on the rota.
Looking around at the strength in depth of Mr McIlroy`s golfing contemporaries, he`s up against some quality.. and you just can`t write that off , the lad is a legend.
Amazing how good Scott played in The Open 2012-15 and couldn't secure the win. He was brilliant this week when Rory won but the draw bias was massive, not much you can do about that at The Open some years.
