  • No one had taken more than 16 appearances to win The Open until Darren Clarke triumphed at Royal St George’s on his 20th.
It was a long wait for man who grew up playing links golf, but he had recently moved back to Northern Ireland and had spent the previous winter playing Royal Portrush in all weathers.
This turned out to be valuable preparation for an Open played on the Kent coast in largely cool, wet and windy conditions. Clarke put on an exhibition of links golf while battling the elements to win by three strokes from Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.

I am a Canadian with Irish parents. I was travelling in Ireland when this happened, saw it in a pub in Galway. I was so lucky, the best party ever.

It would be fun to see one of these for 2009! I think Tom's performance at 59 is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.

This made me smile so much watching again. To see Darren do this in such challenging conditions was amazing. I cried when he won. Well done again Darren Clarke.

Royal St Georges is the toughest course on the Open rota - no other course comes close to its challenge - and if the wind blows, it can make the greatest golfers look like amateurs - its brilliant. And Darren Clarke was just brilliant over those four days. I've played the course many many times and I've watched really good amateurs look like high handicappers. And the course has made me look like a beginner. Oh, and lunch is wonderful too!

Got to love that bipolar Open Championship weather! Really separates the men from the boys. The weather exposes anyone's lack of experience so incredibly quickly.
I had actually completely forgotten that Thomas Bjorn played so well in this one in spite of his immense baggage from losing his father and his 2003 blowup on the same course. Much respect, Thomas!

First time I’ve seen this beautiful course. A member of the club, this was Ian Fleming’s inspiration for Royal St Marks in the novel Goldfinger.

There are many talented golfers that haven't won a Major - Monty, Westie, Poults, Bjorn...the list goes on. So when Darren had the chance to win I was willing him all the way. I won't lie - I thought somehow he'd "blow it" in the 4th round but I was wrong - he held his nerve and, as he says, "manoeuvred" his way around the course and played brilliantly. Added to this the emotional pain he had losing his wife. I still look back on this as the most satisfying Major win ever. Darren Clark, Major winner, Open winner.

He was very unlucky the weather changed after his third round otherwise he may have had an outside shot at winning on day 4

Darren Clarke's wife recently passing away with cancer was what made this incredibly emotional and added to the story. An element that would have made this story more complete
