  • Finally a new video!
    This time I look at the perfect starting stack and chip breakdown for hosting a cash game at home! But there's a lot more to think about for hosting a cash game than a tournament!
    I spend a lot of time mulling over STAKES - how much should you play for? It's not easy to decide, ponder carefully!
    If you're looking to get ahold of custom plaques for your mix games like I show in the video, check out smartsign.com and click on "Custom Plastic Signs". - my plaques are 2x4 inch plastic - and they weren't cheap!
    Thanks so much for watching - be sure to comment, like and subscribe and let me know if I missed anything or made any mistakes, thanks!

    I had a "higher stakes" game once and it turned out to be a disaster.. especially with "friends of friends" who wanted to play. Rude, obnoxious and just an overall bad time. I said to myself, that would be the last time. So now, $25 buy-in... buy back up to a certain time in the night and fun for everyone. You don't break the bank if you lose, but can win some beer (or whatever) money and be happy. Some people are way too competitive, especially when it comes to money... turns to anger and that is a no-no in my house.. ever.

    after many years of doing $50 buyin.. we changed to a $60 buy-in because people tend to bring $20 bills.. made change easier when game is starting.

    We recently bumped our home game after 5 years at $0.50-$1 blinds to $1-$2, and the action was a lot more lively. Everyone loved it. That, along with the $3 bomb pots over 20-30mins made for a really fun cash game. We recently called an end to our poker year due to the holidays, but we're all really looking forward to next year.

    I've run home games on and off over 20 years and I absolutely LOVE $20 chips. Once I got some I noticed I didn't have to load my payout box with (real money) $1 & $5s like I did before. I'd suggest anyone starting a home game to make sure you get a set with those $20 chips.

    I do agree with running stakes one level lower than the casino to maintain a regular home game. My oldest poker crew was mostly casino players and we originally played a weekly $2/4 limit before NL was in casinos. When AC adopted NL they all demanded $1/2 NL. I warned them they wouldn’t want to show up every week and they disagreed. Well the game fell apart to the point we were playing once every other month at most. All the sudden people were “busy”. I took a few years off from poker and then started with a new group. They also play $1/2 at the casino but we do .50/1 at home. The game is very easy to get together on a regular basis and has been for a few years

    - Chip breakdown for a high roller tournament (5K, 25K, 100K, 500K, 1M denoms).
    - best payout structure for a tournament
    - your 10 biggest tips for organizing a home tournament. I’m interested in what is the best way to speed things up if you notice play is slow and you want the guests out of your garrage in time.
    - Best ways to store your chips / plaques collection
    Keep up the good work!! :)

      The highroller chip breakdown I do really want to do, but honestly I’ve never run a highroller tournament, and the structure is a bit vexing to me. As soon as this pandemic thing subsides, I’m definitely going to host a highroller tournament with the royal chips, and from there I might be able to do a breakdown/structure video for it.

    • @TROGDOR1009
      @TROGDOR1009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can’t you use the same structure he outlines for a 20k stack? Instead of 8 25s you get 8 25ks, instead of 8 100s you get 8 100ks, etc. everything would just be 1,000x what it should be. Idk what the point of that is, but it works.

  • @TheMrGrey
    @TheMrGrey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do a $30 buy in $20 goes to the prize and $10 goes into buying drinks and snacks for everyone. I don't even play, I'm the dedicated dealer and everyone has a good time and it's winner takes all. If I have money left over from the snaks and drinks then I add that money to the prize pool. Every play group is different and this might not work for everyone but it works for us and loosing 20 doesn't feel so bad but winning more than 100 and getting food and drinks feels great.

    Awesome video Chris, I aspire to have such a cool homegame like yours, those paulson chips are to die for🤤!! We have the same exact stakes in my home game - I have a question for you, when you play fixed limit mixed games, what stakes do you play when the no limit games are .25/.50? I always have a hard time deciding.

    • @chrismanzoni3586
      @chrismanzoni3586  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We do .50/$1 blinds with $1 small bet and a $2 big bet. For stud games every player posts a .25¢ ante and we have a.50¢ bring-in with a $1 small bet on the first two streets of betting and a $2 big bet thereafter.

  • @DonkeyAndy
    @DonkeyAndy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    You could cut out a rack of quarters and should still have plenty for $0.25/$0.50, especially if you have an extra roll of $20s or $25s. That is if you only usually have one table to play on. 200 quarters would be great for two or more tables. Having 200 for one table might seem a bit much, but understandable if it helps have players feel like high rollers having lots of chips in front of them.
    I do admit having a roll of quarters is great to not having to count out chips for a starting stack, but it would be great to cut out a rack of quarters to use for either more $1's, $5's, and/or $20's/$25's. Especially since, as you said, in most games people would raise close to or right on $1 and just throw a $1 chip. Plus allocating that 2nd rack of quarters for any other higher denomination, such as $5s or $20s/$25s, would help future proof one's set once their group gets comfortable enough to play higher stakes up to 1/1, or even 1/2.

    • @aaronspektor2624
      @aaronspektor2624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Andy Smith I agree with you. One of our games is at these stakes. I’m the chip guy in the group. The best stack is $2 in quarters, $18 in $1, and 6x$5. Reloads with $1s and $5s. I have 280x$1s, but 200 is perfect. I would get 300 5s. I wouldn’t introduce a 4th denom w a $25.

    • @paranoidandroid7406
      @paranoidandroid7406 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also depends on how the game plays. Lots of PF limping and calls? I could see how 2 racks of fracs could work. Personally think that more than 1 rack of fracs for a single table is a waste. Better to focus on your workhorse chips, which are $5s for our games

    Very well done, informative, easy-to-follow cash game poker chip tutorial. The .25/.50 blind structure with $50 max buy in and $100 rebuy is a great way to structure a friendly home game. Those poker chips are awesome but all your excellent advice begs the question, why use poker chips at all in a friendly, low limit cash game? The blinds are a quarter and fifty cents so all you really need are rolls of quarters, 1 dollar bills, 5 dollar bills and some larger denomination paper money. I understand chips will make it easy for side pots, split pots and quickly determining how much a player has in front of him but cash worked just fine in the Old West and would also work in your garage.

    A while ago I used to host poker games where limits were $200 buy in and $1/$2 blinds. After a few months of hosting, a few shady people started to show up invited by my friends. They were anglers, card markers and colluders. I began to lay down house rules and of course the shady guys didn't like it. They began being verbally abusive and hostile. Little did they know that i had 3 fully grown pit bulls that I then introduced to them. I told them they could either leave with their stacks or stay and see what my pits had to say. Unsurprisingly they left and never came back.

    Hi Chris!
    If you don't rake your game how do you manage all the expenses?
    I want to host my first game with players that are not necessarily my friends (yet), but good people haha... this are the things I have in my mind that I think I need to take care of but I don't know if I can keep the game over time if I'm paying for all... consider this will be a standard 9 handed cash game or tournament.
    - Dealer (Do your players deal themselves? Do you pay for a professional dealer?)
    - Drinks (Is it ok if I sell drinks (Beer, Soda, Water) to the same price I bought it? Does your players go get there with their own drinks?
    - Food (I was just thinking in some snacks but I don't know if thats ok or if I need to consider a full dinner meal)
    - The place itself. Do you clean everything yourself?
    Thank you very much for your videos, you are awesome!
    Greetings from Mexico!

      Poker for me is a hobby - a hobby that I love - but just a hobby. In that way, poker is like a lot of things I love - movies, board games, food and so on. If I have guests in my house over to watch a movie, or play a board game, or sit down to a meal - I would never dream of charging them to offset the expense of the evening's activities.
      I look at poker the same way I look at hosting a party, or a dinner or a movie or any gathering.. I'm not playing the poker to make money necessarily (beyond what I may win as a way of keeping score), and I'm not hosting to make money or even to break even. I'm hosting because I love playing with my friends in my home.
      I would be very careful about charging people in your house to play poker. I don't know what the laws are in Mexico, but in California it's illegal.
      To answer your other questions -
      We self deal. We are all friends and keep it casual.
      I don't serve alcohol in my home as I don't drink at all. People are welcome to bring their own beer or other alcoholic beverages. Most of my friends are pretty focused on playing poker, so it's a pretty sober game.
      I have snacks for poker time, and they're always pretty basic - a bag of chips, maybe some cookies, mixed nuts and that's about it.
      Since my game is in my garage I routinely set up and break down all the tables and chairs, as we park our cars in the garage when we're not playing. I use a leaf blower to clean out the dirt every other week or so.

      I host the games for my friends. Each game one of the players brings pizzas, snacks and soft drinks (for those driving). Everyone gives that player £5 to cover the cost.
      Players bring their own beer, whisky etc.
      We’ve been doing this for years and it works well. Like Chris says the idea is to have a good laugh with friends and to keep them wanting to come back to the next game. Visit Poker Chip Forum and you’ll find lots of great advice on hosting games there.

    How do you cash people out when your playing 5/10 cents or 25/50 cents if everyone is buying in with bills ? Does the host need to have lots of change ?

    • @chrismanzoni3586
      @chrismanzoni3586  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have quarters or any coins in my cash box. If the payout amount involves quarters, as we do play with quarters/fracs on the table, I typically round down and keep the change in the cash box, which means I do technically "rake" the leftover quarters in the form of a dollar bill or two.
      I don't keep this extra money for myself, it always goes back to players in one way or another. Dollar bills are handy to make change and break larger bills. If I have accumulated five or more of them I use them to buy bottled water and/or snacks. I'm always very up front with my players about this - I say "and the bank is keeping your 50 cents to make change later or buy water later" and they are cool with it.
      If your players are not okay with this micro-rake for making change in the future or purchasing water/snacks, then it would be good to have a big jar of change (including whatever denoms you are using if you are playing micro-stakes, such as nickels, dimes and quarters) so you can make your change exact.

    Recommendations for $.25/.$25, $25 buy-in, $50 reload?

  • @KJ-bc3de

    Hey, I’m going to do a chipset that can range from 25/50c to 50c/$1
    I’ve decided on 625 chips
    200 25c
    200 $1
    150 $5
    50 $25
    25 $100
    What do you think of the breakdown? Would that also give me a bit of wiggle room to range at difference stakes (maybe even a bit at 1-2 some random days ?). I’m stumped on this one
    Please let me know if you’d recommend reallocating to other chips like the 5s .
    Ps, I’m aware I don’t need the $100 but I love the style of them so I wanted to have a barrel to complete my set

  • @DonkeyAndy
    @DonkeyAndy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Also, you could recommend having $0.25/$0.25 blind games if players don't want to have as high of a buy in as $0.25/$0.50 but have a hard time getting $0.05 chips for their set. Buy ins can be $25 max, just $5 more than a $0.10/$0.20 game, and save their money on higher counts of larger denominated chips. Especially since in the $0.05/$0.10 & $0.10/$0.20 games the nickel chips would be used mostly for the blind bets.

    • @DonkeyAndy
      @DonkeyAndy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JohnDoe-on1xb If that's your preference, or you players like having a lot of chips, sure. It would work fine for having 5-6 players and get all of the quarters and $1s on the felt.
      Personally I, and everyone else I play with, prefer to have starting stacks instead of full barrel (20ct.). I like to have my starting stacks as the following:
      12x 25c
      17x $1
      Xx $5.
      I played in a random 0.50/1 game years ago that gave everyone a barrel (20ct.) of quarters, and later had so many quarters it felt like it was unnecessary, especially for the blinds at that time; even though there were many chips, they're not entirely valuable compared to the $1 and $5 chips, which are the real workhorse chips for .25/.25 & .25/.50 ($1s and $1s & $5s respectively).

      Both are great in their own way. Tournaments will always be more popular and get more players, so if you are interested in building a game I would highly recommend having a regularly scheduled tournament. Cash games are a lot easier to set up and run, but harder to recruit players as folks are always concerned about going broke. For sure I get the most joy out of playing cash with my best friends in my game, so less players is not that big a deal. As long as we can get at least six players it’s game on!

Once a player loses all their chips I would allow them to reload for up to 200 big blinds, so in the case of a .25/.50 game that would be $100. Some home games have different guidelines, but that’s the method that I use and it helps to keep the stakes lower.
