There didn't seem to be that much room under the excluder for the queen to lay up and with so much capped brood close to emerging, the brood nest is likely soon to be overly congested maintaining swarming pressure. With sealed swarm cells and so much coming brood, my inclination would have been to reduce possible brood nest congestion by lifting one or two of the frames of good capped brood with the best queen cell above the excluder and distribute to a weaker hive in a couple of days after nipping off the queen's head, appreciating you don't want a new colony. Alternately, a double screen divider board would allow mating the new queen before distribution to the weaker colony, if she's as good as her mother you'll have two boomers!

Thanks. I would t do it that way now. I should have split the queen off.

Hey! I just found you :) and so glad I did. I just did my first bee hive inspection on our homestead and found 4 swarm queen cells. I found tour video really helpful to identify everything going on in my hive and I will certainly be checking in more! Where abouts in Aus are you? :) We are in the Bega Valley, NSW. Speak soon 🐝🌻

Hi. Could you add a second brood box instead of a super to stop swarming?

    • @aussiebeekeeping

Absolutely. I don’t like double brood boxes as they just get too big

    Hi
My name is Peter and I am a novice bee keeper. I have subscribed to your channel as I find it very interesting, so thanks for that and keep up the good work.
I am wondering why you didn’t create a second brood super for your bees to expand their numbers into instead of putting another honey super on top.
    Regards Peter

Thanks for subscribing. In Australia we usually only run single brood boxes.

@@aussiebeekeeping In colder climates like eg Canberra double box broodnests are probably in the majority, while they do produce less bees per brood box and less honey in super, extra resources are stored below the excluder for the harsher cold climate. The Canadian beekeep lifts the excluder to allow the queen to temporarily lay in the second box then drops the excluder down as the season progresses.
One good thing about double box broodnest is that you can check more easily for swarm cells by simply lifting the second box on one end rather than pull every frame, if they're going to swarm, started cells will be visible as the centre of the broodnest will lie between the two boxes.

Hello, after you destroyed the queen cells you said you were going to give them more room. I thought this meant you'd create more room in the brood box, and not another honey super. Seems counter-intuitive to this newbie.

I only run single brood boxes so no real option to add space to a brood box filled with solid brood.

@@aussiebeekeeping congested broodbox with no room to lay , equals swarm intentions for sure , even though you took out the cells , very hard to stop them , they already made their mind up , an alternative could have put some of the solid brood up into the empty box you added and some empty combs in the brood nest for them to work on and the queen to lay in , space is key other wise wasting your time when they are congested with no room and all the brood still to hatch , out of interest did they stay or go , I’m hedging they still swarmed.

Sorry, not a big fan of your tactics. Stress will weaken a hive.
