So you want to be a beekeeper? Here are some practical steps to keep bees, because keeping bees for beginners in Australia is not difficult. Well it's easier than you think, here are some steps to take if you want to keep bees responsibly in Australia. I share what I actually needed for my first hive, as well as what was recommended to me that I haven't made use of. Beekeeping for beginners Australia is a topic I am increasingly becoming more passionate about the more I learn. So here is a list of all my beekeeping equipment that I think you need for your first hive. Essentially I am making for you the the beginning bee keeper video I needed but didn't find. And sharing some of the truth about being a first time bee keeper, including things I missed, how quick their growth can be, the cost, and some of the experiences I have had. So if you are curious and wondering what to expect with your first bee hive or just want to learn some more about beekeeping basics than tune in!

I would advise anyone and everyone to grow a lavender patch, the smell and taste of lavender honey is divine! also plant some wild flower borders, you get long blooming periods of different flowers and they really do improve your resources, especially if you have them nearer to your colonies.

Another awesome video guys!! So much useful information here before this I was set on a flow hive for our farm but the cost is crazy and your right there will still be maintenance and internal inspections required either way so I'm thinking we might go this other way you have here. Really great points ya'll 🙌
Glad it was helpful! Yes I hear with the flowhive it's also hard to upgrade the hive as they only make them 2 levels, so you would have to buy a second whole hive to add a box for the bees to keep some resources for themselves.

I bought a used flow hive I might try this year. I’ve got a colony in the brood box. I didn’t use it last year because I didn’t want to bother with cleaning the flow frames. They are a bit icky looking at the moment. I only got because it was a good deal. I assume the flow hive is popular in Australia?
Let me know how it goes, I havent done a tonne of research into it, but have definitely noticed a trend amongst people I meet who are 50+ or living in suburbs with full time jobs leaning towards flowhives, im assuming because they look so simple. I know I thought the same when I started but quickly moved away from the idea when I learnt the price ans the fact that I would still need to invest in other equipment too. Not opposed to having my mind changed!!
@@DiandSam I think it must have more to do with the cost, lol. They are pricey! I believe they were invented in Australia, so I wondered how popular they were over there.
I reckon that if you deem yourself responsible for swarms from your own hives, then you should always have an empty hive on hand for your captured swarm, because a swarm really is a kind of emergency and probably not something which is best dealt with by having to phone around for a brood box. I reckon a lot of commercial beekeepers really don't bother about their swarms, because they're too busy trying to boost their production to tend properly to every hive they have.
Best, though, to keep an eye on things often enough to take out the swarm cells.
I'm not a fan of smoke. I find that a fine mist water spray upsets the bees a lot less, and it seems that water spray disturbs them less from their usual activity. They just get a bit confused by it, then head downstairs after the second or third squirt. Let's face it, smoke is a threat, rain and mist is something you'd probably try to stay away from.but it's much less of a threat. Water is also much safer when the bush is very dry and you're in the middle of it by yourself. If you accidentally kick the smoker over, well, that's a worrying thought!
Great advise, yes you really need to be aware of what your bees are doing and provide them more space or less as they need it!
I have learnt so much since first getting our bees, they have been an absolute pleasure, and are great at telling you what they need!

We haven't seen him aince we treated him, hopefully that means he is feeling better. Apparently they only stay in a borrow for 10 days before finding a new home!

Sams suit is from Oz Armour, the bushbee man has the same one. I find it feels a bit stiff to my liking but certainly keeps those stingers off!!

Certainly! I kept hearing its a hobby that you have to throw a lot of money into, with little 'reward' back if youre doing it for monatary profit. But once you have some established hives you can maintain it there!
@@DiandSam you can make your money in selling nuk small hives, when you get wax can sell that in a lot of different was. Honey is another way we have got 50kg this year from 4 hives.
