Dead Queen Bee Found Outside my BIGGEST HIVE! - What Now?
During my routine hive check, I made a shocking discovery-a dead queen bee lying outside my largest beehive. Concerned and curious, I dove into a full and thorough inspection to uncover what led to her being outside the hive. Was she overthrown, or did something else happen?
As I examined the frames, I uncovered some surprising clues about the colony's health and dynamics. Along the way, I realized the hive was booming with activity and needed to be split to prevent overcrowding and swarming. Watch as I carefully inspect the hive, assess the situation, and make the decision to create a split to give these bees the best chance to thrive.
This video is perfect for both beginner and experienced beekeepers who want to learn more about hive management and understanding colony behavior. Don’t miss this intriguing inspection story!

Rescuing a Queen-less Beehive With a Rescued Hive
มุมมอง 1.8K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I head out to the apiary to inspect a hive split I performed earlier and discover that half of the split is now queenless. Without a queen, the hive's survival is at risk-but all hope is not lost! I decide to take action by introducing a frame of bees from a previously rescued hive, complete with eggs and young larvae, into the queenless colony. Will the bees accept the new frame...

I have watched some use sugar water to mist down bees in place of smoke, also I have seen some use liquid smoke to mask odors like smoke to a lesser degree. Just some options for fire risk seasons.
100% all good ideas. I didn’t realize it was a total for ban until I got down there and started lighting my smoker. I checked and then had to just do the best.
If it is Grey Box (E Microcarpa), it usually flowers Feb-May. A commercial keeper gave a talk at our club and said he had a love-hate relationship with grey box. Makes good honey apparently, but if it rains during flowering, the nectar ferment more than for most trees, and this supposedly can increase the incidence of nosema. He would actively move his bees off a grey box flow if it rained heavily. No idea if it’s true, although I have heard similar about red ironbark (E Sideroxylon)
Thanks for the info. Yep. Hoping it comes in soon and makes all this worthwhile.
Have started feeding in Bendigo area also.
It’s been a crap year
@aussiebeekeeping certainly has, here's hoping that the autumn flow is better. 👍
Wish I had caught the Livestream. Sorry to hear you aren't having much of a spring flow, but the hives are looking good 🐝😁 and Ian Stepler is the Canadian Beekeeper. Also glad to see the two abandoned hives are still going strong.
Thanks for watching.
Thrilled to see you had a live stream - just caught the vid now. I'm in Melb eastern suburbs and new this season as well - it's really reassuring that I'm not the only one needing to feed atm. I learn something every time from your vids - also agree best beekeeping photography on youtube! Please keep doing what you're doing!🌞🐝🥵
I didn't wish it on you bud I merely told you what kind of luck I had over the past several years lol.
Yeah it's been a tough year.
Im located in southwest vic just out of Warrnambool iv got into bee keeping this season i love watching your videos they are a great reference for me with seasons ect Im 100% youtube taught.
Love watching and learning about bees 🐝 😍
Glad you're enjoying the bee journey.
Awesome live. I loved your reading comments while finding queens!😊
Thanks. :)
The thick knife is an exclusive from HBKS. Very sought after from old school beekeepers for hot knifing in a boiler prior to uncapping. Keen to use this particular knife in the future.
I can’t wait to use it either mate. So sharp. How’s your season going?
So if that queen came from a walk away split - that split would have been hopelessly queenless and with an ageing/failing population. So it would need brood including eggs and some nurse bees (and maybe some resources) to make a strong new queen I guess. At least there seem to be good numbers of drones still around for mating - at least for now.
Yep. My previous video was me rescuing the walk away split
So did that queen hatch and get killed by your original queen with the white?
Probably killed by their population upon attempting to enter that hive
...or worse yet, they may be eating brood.
Moe, Larry, and Curly
Its possible the bees decided to supercede for some reason and then changed their mind. Ive found queens outside of the hive with their entaurage, then return and start laying. Still so much thats a mystery. Possibly decided to swarm, decided against it due to weather, killed the new queen and contined in situe. Many variables
Absolutely possible. However I think she’s more italian than wild carniolan
The middle hive.. Lazarus in the hope it pulls through!
Oh what happen to bees in the new box ...... did they survive ???
There’s a video. :)
@@aussiebeekeeping A cliffhanger! Ah! I watch those videos because I find beekeeping somewhat calming and now there are cliffhangers. :) Can't wait to know what happened though.
@yersiniasilverfors6552 haha oops.
perhaps that queen returned from a mating flight and went into the wrong hive and was killed
Just like I explained in the video?
What breed is this queen?
Italian
Hi from across the ditch 👍👋 ive had a bit of a surprise with queens this year myself in one of the hobbyists I'm helping hives. Opened up and found a young queen perhaps 6 weeks old in the top box of a double deep, came across the mature queen in the bottom box 😂 both laying up a storm so did an immediate split and shared the honey supers between the two hives. I suspect a failed swarm but very unusual 😂both colonies doing very well now👍😅
Yeah it’s pretty common for mum and daughter to work side by side in a big box. Pretty cool too
Your bees are quite runny😂
Yep. They are wild.
@aussiebeekeeping I think they try to make supersede queen And right after virgin hatched She was killed by old queen
@MountainTopBeekeeping it’s possible. But she looked more Italian than the wild genetics in this hive I think. And I did have a failed walk away split 2 weeks ago.
@@aussiebeekeeping ok
The nail used in the bottom bar looked quite short, l use 45 mill C gun nails and skew them towards each other.
Why you kill it?
Thanks for sharing!! Always love your shots of the larvae and eggs. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
You're right about the frames these days. I only make my own boxes and nail my frames together now. Any box coming from 'special sales' are pathetic low quality timber. I buy my marine ply from a local mob now. It's heavier, but a similar price to Bummings rubbish as well. An air stapler for the frames doesn't do the job either. To be safe, I put three brads on each end. One on top, and two on the sides. Nothing worse than pulling out a frame that comes to bits.
Your Queen didn't go back to box, you can see her at 9:06 on bottom left corner of frame. The suspense is killing me lol Great video
Yeah I saw that. Thought I would leave it to the community. Well spotted.
@cheryleesbees I saw it as I was only looking at that corner, if I'd was looking somewhere else, I would've missed her. The white spot made it easier. I never mark the Queen, and maybe that's why I completely miss her lots of times. 🤔🤓
Leaving us in suspense!
Haha ooops sorry.
Hi there. I had the same thing with one of my hives. I found a dead queen outside, but the existing, marked queen was still in the hive and no queen cells. It was an odd one.
The best photos of eggs
Thanks. Wait to I upload my next video next week. Even better footage.
Couple of questions: 1. What happened to the middle phoenix brood? I haven’t been able to find an answer to that! 2. With the crappy frames, how come you don’t cut the comb out of the frame and put it into a new frame, supported by, say, rubber bands etc? Keeping the comb, but replacing the frame? Thank you for taking the time to answer this!
I in Canada I wish I could check my hives in December 😂😂
Haha. Love Canada
Que colônias lindas. Boa sorte com a zanganeira.
I observed all of your wax looks quite old--some of the hexagon shapes are disappearing into circular shapes. How old is this wax? and how long to you keep them like this?
These hives were abandoned and not inspected for years. Thus the old comb
first put on the gloves and then tge jacket....
How will I do up the zips?
23:41 queen spotted :P
Where did you get the varroa comb from?

My team shared this video which I got from tiktok and we ended up getting a warning from TH-cam for copyrights. We are raising awareness about koalas while you took that video down, you are suppressing awareness about koalas. Grow up kid
That’s how copyrights work. If you don’t own the rights to the video you can’t benefit from it. Perhaps next time ask permission. Thanks for your insulting remarks.

Thank you for your tip to find queen I carnt find her
You don’t seem to use the board under the lid only the silver stuff can you tell me why iv only been doing for two years and I’m learning thanks Nola
Two things: (1) sugar feed - OH NO! (2) Black spots /wood rot - hard to tell from the video but its not good for bees.
But it’s real
She’s having a break
I used o do mine every to weeks but iv let go for ten weeks and there very happy
Your girls are so good
Don’t give up on them do you live in bush
They need nectar feed them sugar and water I’d and also minerals and apple spider vinagar
Have you fed them
