At the time of old Duke Paulus's demise, Leto was practically the same age young Paul is in this scene -15. Thank you, gents. There's definitely a lot to take in and absorb for the vast world-building. Multiple worlds, many many characters, names, terms, politics, histories, plot angles, organizational positions and how they benefit themselves and other groups, technologies, faith / religion, schemes, etc. I've seen comments about how this may be aligned with the concept of GoT in space, I agree. This is complex storytelling in an era where the superhero comic book films dominate in popularity and therefore box office dollars, which seems a lower common denominator, but as we've seen with the last few Marvel films the fans are not resonating with it. They are looking for something more than just action and sassy one-liners. Dune could be the new big franchise that breaks waves over the beach. The third film has been announced as in development by Legendary, Denis is writing a script, and there is the HBO Bene Geserit series in development. Lots of content to mine here, I just hope it's crafted with care.
Paul doesn't question his responsibility in the books, he's a damn good kid who love his parents and mentors who are basically grooming him to be ruler of entire planet. He's exactly what children of nobility were like in the old world, multiple disciplines, languages, self-defense, social skills, politics, mathematics, etc.
The recurring bull imagery is a reference to grandfather Paulus and his bullfighting and to House Harkonnen and the Emperor. Paulus was killed by a bull from Selucas Secundus (former homeplanet of the Emperor and home of the Saurdakar). The name Harkonnen comes from Finnish Harkönen. Bull / ox in Finnish is 'härkä'. The bull symbol also stands for the naivety of House Atreides. They think they can fight anyone.
"Jamis owed me $20 bucks!" Lamo! Don't worry, in the book, Paul also takes the place of Jamis in his (Jamis') own household so Paul would also inherit his debts.
"Kwisatz Haderach" means "Shortening of the Way." The Way is a reference to the "Weirding Way," a Bene Gesserit-developed combat technique that requires mastery of mind and body. A Kwisatz Haderach would be a male Bene Gesserit who would have access to the memories of both his male and female ancestors as well as an ability to bridge space and time with prescient ability. Bene Gesserit can choose the gender of their baby (which is to be female) but Jessica fell in love with Leto (which technically is forbidden) and she gave him a boy instead leading to this hiccup of a problem instead, as The "Kwisatz Haderach" was a generation to early. If Paul was female, he (or obviously she) would birth the proper "Kwisatz Haderach".
51:14, Baron Harkonen is the inspiration for Jabba the Hut in Star Wars. But unlike Jabba, the Baron doesn't keep around scantily clad slave girls, he prefers his scantily clad subjects to be more of a masculine variety.
yes, he is a living computer, called a Mentat. computer technology was outlawed (Butlerian Jihad) which is why the Spacing Guild needs spice... before the Butlerian Jihad, interstellar travel was done just like every other sci-fi movie... spaceships with navigation computers that could detect anomalies on your route and adjust trajectory, accordingly, to miss them. Now the Guild's Navigators imbibe huge amounts of Melange in order to gain prescience enough to avoid hazards in space while moving from point a to pint b. if the prohibition on thinking machines (computers and AI) were ever lifted, spice would become irrelevant.
Outside of all the people with the "Eyes of Ibad" ;) This isn't only fremen, but anyone in the imperium afflicted with spice-addiction. Redrawel is deadly and it is almost entirely the most powerful people in the galaxy, who will be affected. Since spice makes you live much longer, I think people would still take part. It would be less valuable - naturally - but not worthless at all. Its just insane, since it does "both".
20:05, The Reverend Mother Helen is not only Lady Jessica's teacher in the Bene Gesserit school. She is also Jessica's biological mother and so Paul's grandmother. But due to the cold way in which the Bene Gesserit (BG) view normal human emotions, I'm not sure if Jessica knows of their genetical connection. The BG are all about control of themselves and people. Sex, love and faith are just tools for them to leverage control. I feel bad for Paul that this is how he gets to meet his grandmother. My grandma made cookies and sweet potato pies, his grandma threatens deletion.🤣😂 Jessica was supposed to be a spy in House Atreides for the BG. Instead she and Leto fell in love. That is why she chose to have a son for him.

I honestly dislike this constant comparison with star wars they have very little to do with each other. Sure lucas was in part inspired by dune but its only a part, star wars have much more in common with classic fantasy, also no story is born in a vacuum and i consider myself a long time fan of both stories. I first discovered dune 30 years ago and have read all the books, including the ones from frank herbert´s son, before disney i read all of the star wars books from the expanded universe. Dune is considered among the masterpieces of what is called hard core scifi, where star wars normally is considered soft core and it is really more a fantasy story that just happend to take place in a space setting, there is a but though star wars in particular the books from before disney, did from time to time get close to being hard core, there is a deep lore in star wars its just not the focus most of the time in the movies or the books.
Most of the stpry concepts and details are watered-down versions of what is in Dune. As a film series though, yes Star Wars draws on mainly film making inspirations like samurai films and westerns.
"Is this better than Star Wars" is not a good question. Denis Villeneuve's Dune part 1 and 2 are better films than all the Star Wars saga, in terms of piece of art. But Star Wars is more than films, it's a culture now. Today's Dune movies are reboot with new actors and everything is good. But Star Wars and their character can not be rebooted. The face of Lule, Leia, Anakin will be those faces we know, forever. That is why Star Wars is, with any doubt, far greater than Dune.
That is your opinion. Agree to disagree. Star Wars is a modern mythos, while Dune is a warning about following the myths of others. Apples and Oranges. There is no comparison except the details which George poached from Dune very explicitly.
Dune is 200x better than any Star Wars movie. Rogue one or the prequels are the only Star Wars movies that can even be in the same convo. The original trilogy looks like hot garbage compared to dune. Was it great and iconic for when it came out? Sure. But that does not mean it is even in the same level as Dune
Dune novel series came way before Star Wars and Lucas greedily pillaged the books to create his story… some trial against him has even been envisioned by the publishers for a while. The fact that the characters names are not funny enough for you is because the first book has been published in 1965. I guess Franck Herbert didn’t see the need to add funny content given the already heavy content of his universe… there are too much to think about in a first reading.
Yes Star Wars was inspired by Dune quite a bit but it also took from numerous other sources as well such as samurai films, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, spaghetti westerns, Arthurian mythology and many more. Dune is just a sci-fi point of view of "Lawrence of Arabia".

Duncan Idaho actually lives for thousands of years 😂😂😂
Spoiler alert dude
Since Disney ruined Star wars i think Dune is better and also Star wars is inspired by Dune so i guess
Star Wars cheated the dune books 😅 Lucas we see you for what you did 👀
Hard to say, Dune starts off really strong, but then it gets all weird as the books keep going. Hard to follow.
