Jace and Rhaenyra's conversation at the end of the last ep wasn't necessarily about bastards. They were talking about anyone with Targaryen ancestry, like those who'd been born from marriage into other houses. That's why they would be looking for candidates in the records of their family lineage at Dragonstone.

The show unintentionally just said Aegon may be suited to rule by saying those who don’t want to lead are the ones who should, and if we remember Aegon had no wish to rule. We of course know he is in no way suited but I can’t help but think that they might be trying to make a parallel with Aegon and Aemond and Rhaenyra and Daemon. There have been a lot of those in this season already.
