Wonderful animals. They eat ticks that cause Lyme Disease and they are immune to rabies. Plus, they're not aggressive. They're bluffing when they puff up and sound scary
@@thetwistedsamurai that's not true, I was bitten by one cause he was really scared and my hand was right on his face, but the bite was very weak, it caused no harm at all, didn't even hurt. Then I was able to pet it, and didn't try to bite me again, just opened the mouth.
Possums are 99.9% bluff... I love'em, we have one in our yard that has to be ///years/// old, because it's been here for nearly 10 years that I know of. We have some near the lumber yard too, and bless their little hearts, they clean up everything that a critter can eat.
I think your opossum may be a few generations of your friend. They only live about 2 years in the wild and 3-4 in a nice home with vet visits. But man do I also love the little guys!
@@rottytherottski522 I agree, it would be exceedingly rare for one to make 3 yrs in the wild, but 1 to 2 yrs in the wild is usually about all you can get. Its a shame they don't live longer, but that is their place in nature and they have been doing it for millions of years.
@@G56AG You said it perfectly. They evolved to be a R-Selected species so they don't live very long. But I noticed that they really do make the best of the time they have. They use their time wisely.
Did you get bit? I did once! Didn't give up though, I live with one now, he lives in my bedroom, totally free to roam, but he doesn't. For the most part, if they have food, water and a cozy place, they just sleep, which is my philosophy too.
I pet my wild possum when I can sneak up on her. Feed her nightly she's a very good natured creature but I have to surprise her. If she hears the front door open and has a second to think, she'll bolt on me. See my petunia video on my channel Stripervince1
That's a defensive display, they are unlikely to bite, although they can. Notice that even though the mouth is wide open, he/she makes no attempt to swing around and bite, which they could easily do. Their standard reaction to danger is the mouth gape you see here, then they try to run off and if they can't, they faint, not a real aggressive animal, not at all.
Opossum acting on instinct. Scared of big predator, therefore threatening her with big mouth full of sharp teeth; yet not quite scared enough to bite or faint. Not very brainy, these opossums, but very intriguing nevertheless.
Ah....another bush kitten. 99% bluff 1% play dead and smell funny. Gotta practically shove your hand in his mouth and touch his tonsils to get'm to bite.
When you will tame it ,feed it by hand & touch it first only short time ,than first its distress for a wild poss. After petting give him a little treat . I think when you do this evrry day ,it will lose his fear
Opossums pretty much never bite people unless they are injured, or you are genuinely hurting them. They are, by and large, pacifistic creatures. The one in the video is acting mean and vicious in an attempt to make the big scary bipedal monster go away, but chances are the girl in the video could have put her hand directly into the opossum's mouth and it would have just let her, no bites involved. It's the same with opossums foaming at the mouth or playing dead. They pretend to be dead or have rabies (which they can't even catch!) because they think it will make predators lose interest in them.
I like opossums and don't blame you for wanting to touch it, but the poor thing certainly wasn't enjoying this and was very scared and trying to look mean to scare you off. In the future maybe instead of asking if you CAN touch and terrify him, ask yourself if you SHOULD. Fun for you, but not him. All that being said, I'm not trying to be an ass or ruin the fun you had touching him....I know no real harm was done and your heart was in the right place. Just hate prolonging his fear, that's all.
I work at a wildlife rehab place. Wild animals are not domesticated and don’t enjoy being touched. I’m glad he/she didn’t bite you but biting happens in defense. It is also a disservice to the wildlife as it’s best to leave them wild so they don’t come across a human that will harm them and the animal is expecting to be “petted.” I have been bitten before by cats and dogs while trying to attempt a rescue and ended up in ER as my hand looked like a baseball glove. After learning the hard way, I don’t pet cats, dogs, never wildlife. I only caress the animals that know me. 😳🙄🤭
Maybe a little. When they play possum, they start getting droopy, drool, act sick, and maybe even faint. Many predators are hesitant to eat an animal they didn't kill themselves, and so will go away. This opossum is partly in the "open the mouth and look scary" stage, starting to go into a "too sick to be worth eating" stage.
I found a baby in my backyard and will be released after the winter. They do bite. Mine has lunged at me several times. I wear gardening gloves and felt the teeth. Get a tetanus shot if you continue to touch wildlife.
That's just good advice in general. Not very common to get is from bites though. Usually in the soil, and usually transmitted by stepping on a nail (doesn't have to be rusty).
@@notmeatlip9405 First off,I'm not offended. I do question,as my comment asks, why you would mess with a wild animal that is clearly not bothering you. The confused face it has when it starts to feel less threatened. "This...ain't so bad?"

Is this a new trend now? Petting wild possums?
