- The British army has shared an update after military horses ran amok in central London after being spooked by falling rubble on Wednesday 24 April.
Several Household Cavalry soldiers were thrown from their mounts before the animals bolted in the capital.
In a video shared on social media, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Woodward confirmed that three soldiers "incurred injuries which are not deemed to be life-threatening" and are receiving treatment in hospital.
The escaped horses have all been returned to Hyde Park Barracks, where they are undergoing veterinary care.

Colonel, I'm an old American cavalry trooper.
Please allow me to speak for your troopers and say THANK YOU for keeping your priorities straight. Soldiers first, always. As we both know, there is a type of officer who would worry about this accident's effect on their career first or worry about the equipment first or the public perception first. It appears that your command does not tolerate such behavior from leadership and I think every soldier can appreciate that.
This is a professional and clear briefing for the public... the language is simple, the talking points are clear, filled with facts, and the key point is repeated twice: this is the number of soldiers injured, they are receiving professional care, all the mounts have been recovered and are likewise receiving care. These horses are part of our military culture. They have worked and fought alongside our soldiers for centuries. Now they proudly contribute in ceremonial service as a reminder to us all of their great contribution to our country.
errr..
What country
I'm not sure that horses can feel pride. I'm not sure that horses have fought alongside any soldiers. Horses have been underneath and beside soldiers who have fought.
They're that old? They look pretty fit for their age ...
They don't "proudly" contribute, in WWII there were anywhere between 2-5 million killed. They'd rather chill on green pastures, I'm sure.
This is not your fault, it was the builders and their lack of health and safety, regulations and procedures. The police need to be in contact with this company as soon as possible.
I totally agree they need to be investigated further
I think maybe you should have a cup of tea and cool your cockles me old mate.
The builders they need stop being antisocial
That is an assumption re lack of health and safety , no matter the planning incidents happen , I am sure this will be investigated in an unbiased manner
I wouldn’t write off negligence on both ends - if you have horses , you need to control such activities around.
So glad to hear the horse's are having vet treatment now.Hope the humans are doing good now wishing all a speedy recovery.
Anyone going to have a word to the crew at the construction site about the list of top 10 things not to do next to a horse in public for next time?
I would suggest they stay well clear of Guardsmen for the foreseeable future
They shouldn't act any differently around the horses than they would at any other time. Animals undergoing socialization that are deemed fit enough to be introduced to the field need to gain experience around the natural sights and sounds of the area that they will be expected to patrol.
I train working K9s and horses in military and private sector applications, and I would be a bit miffed if everyone treated my animals with kid gloves when they are learning.
It is the handlers' responsibility to keep the animals under threshold, not the people around them. This is not the fault of the construction workers.
@@Nylak-Otteroh come on, we both know they probably violated some noise or OSHA regulation. There is normal construction work and then there is by the book. Ain’t nobody making a fuss about cutting some corners until something happens, well … something happened.

@@diarrhoea69 Some people are "easily" (judgment, yah) horrified than others. Best not to shame them for it.
One has to hope the dropping of construction materials was not a deliberate act. Being a rider and driver of horses I am aware that some people deliberately try to frighten horses because they think it's funny. A ridiculous, and incredibly dangerous mind-set, for rider and horse, but sadly it's all too common. Note I am not suggesting that this is the case here - we shall no doubt never know - but I sincerely hope it wasn't.
My thoughts too.
Seems it was concrete that fell off an elevator/lift, so thankfully, really unlikely to be deliberate. Just a horrible accident.
Yes sadly that's what I've found too.
A person who would deliberately frighten horses is obviously a mean-spirited person. There is no excuse for their behavior. While it sounds like this construction incident was an accident, I agree w/ Jane that these acts can be deliberate.
This was a health and safety issue!! Construction workers should be trained in health and safety but clearly this hasn't happened in this situation. Concrete falling from height! It's enough that injuries have been incurred from just the noise of it but what if said concrete had actually landed on top them?
😮 A public inquiry is needed as to how this happened and the Army plus anyone else affected by the incident should be suing the construction company 💯💯
I hope the soldiers and their horses aren't too badly injured and they make a full recovery.
It should be noted that the sound of the building materials being dropped from height was right next to the horses, and he said it caused ALL horses to bolt. They are very fortunate that there weren't more riders unseated and that many more horses were not running through the streets of London. The others were lucky they stayed on. At least one of the horses that ran away didn't have a saddle on it. I do not know if that rider lost his or her seat, but it is understandable that it would have been very difficult in that circumstance to keep your seat and hold on to one or possibly two other horses that you were leading beside you. I hope everyone, human and equine, recovers quickly. Best wishes to all from Texas, USA.
I am glad that all are safe and receiving the required treatment. Best wishes in particular to the injured service personnel as this shows some of the dangers of the job they do every day.
Eloquent & concise 😊 Please give an update on the status of horses. 🤞

@@ourfarmhouseinspain
True
@@ourfarmhouseinspain Accidents can be caused by natural events, resulting in the cause being.... life. You are thinking about industry only, not life in general. Risk is everywhere, deal with it
@@dom3581 There's almost invariably a traceable cause for any accident, even if involuntary, blameless or natural. A few horses get spooked and run around in London for a bit and every newspaper and influencer is saying its dramatic and horrific 🙄
And the army have to come out with a statement for everyone concerned wtf 😮
Near to where i live the national park of Dartmoor lost many animals to careless drivers last year.
Below is the numbers and personally this is horrific because nobody is talking about it or doing anything significant to stop this from happening.
161 animals had been hit by traffic last year, of which 126 died.
Of these 27 ponies were killed and 11 survived. While 84 sheep were killed and 20 survived and 15 cows were killed and four survived.
These figures happen almost every year so we loose hundreds of animals in 5 years alone to stupid people driving to fast and without care.
Four horses running around London gets national coverage while hundreds of animals get killed every year and nothing gets said.
And if you think that blood on that horse was bad you should see the state the carcasses are left in while the foals and young of the animals that are hit watch thier mothers die Infront of them.
That is a disgrace and disgusting.
I guess it gathered so much attention because these are the king's horses part of the military (which is why they are the ones to come up with a statement) highly trained and used to cities so it's unusual that they would be this scared and uncontrolable. It happened in London too where there are a lot of people who witnessed it and shot footage. It must have been very spectacular though not in a good way.
But the numbers you are citing are very sad indeed and i very much agree this problem deserves way more attention.
