- Today's helpful how to video will be on figuring out why your c10 or c20 c30 & more gm car or truck wont start or crank over, they are a few things that can cause this issue, but one of the main causes with a no crank is the ignition switch or neutral safety switch.
In this video you will see me find and remove, replace my ignition switch, just follow the video and you should be able to do it yourself right in your own drive way.

My dad passed away about a year ago and I've been staring at his truck or finally got started on it seen your video and you were a lifesaver it was exactly what you said it was the safety neutral switch and I was so excited that I took a bobby pin like you suggested stuck it in there and it started right up absolute miracle drug hasn't been running it over 5 years started right up
That’s exactly what my truck was doing! Thank you for the video it was super helpful.
Glad it helped!
I bought a 93 Chevy four winds RV. You help me find the rod going to the ignition what was great. When I turn the key I get no pushback so I guess I have to pull the rest of it apart I done broke this one good. So far yours was the best video for showing how to repair something and I thank you for that
Thank you for the comment, I'm happy my video was helpful
It's been an absolute pleasure listening to your video my dad passed away and it's been pretty hard for me original 73 Chevy pickup he bought off the market
Thank you sir! This has been a crazy run. I started with the tumbler and broke crap trying to dig deeper. Come to find out here that I went way overboard! It's only going to cost me $25 to fix it all now instead of destroying the entire column.
This is the best video on TH-cam for this issue. I can’t tell you how much this is appreciated. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video. I’m having the same problem with my 79 Chevy K10. Everyone telling me it could be this and could be that. But you hit the nail on the head. I’m gonna go buy me a switch and replace it. Thanks

My 82 c10 had a similar problem with this switch, mine would crank but power to the distributer was intermittent during cranking. Found out the stupid way by tearing the whole fuseblock out before I saw you vid and it clicked.
Thanks!
Rewiring my 78 c10 and waited too long to get back to it and couldnt rember how my ignition switch went back in..after looking at your vid i remembered and the rod i would have put it all together and forgot about that. Thanks again
Happy the video helped
Literally one of the best how-to videos I have seen. The informal yet clear, step by step instruction is outstanding! Keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to more.
Thanks, I have many more videos like this coming soon
Thanx for your content bro .I'm restoring an 84 Silverado and your vids have been more help than you can know.thanx again.
Glad to hear it
Thanks a lot for good and simple instructions on how to troubleshoot and install a N.S.Switch . My 1965 Buick Electra 225 has the same problem and the N.S.Switch is the reason. My problem now is I can't find one for my vehicle.! Thanks a lot for shedding some light . Your video was very helpful. Appreciated man .!
Glad it helped
Great video bro I’ve been looking for a video like this for the last couple of days luckily I find yours, couldn’t ask for more great video . Hopefully that fixes mine thanks !

Thank you for taking the time to illustrate everything so well.someone had put my switch in backwards an the switch rod was always falling out.until I seen your video an wow realize that no wonder some idiot had installed it on the side where the high bright switch is.Thank you again
Thanks for the comment, I am happy that you found my video so helpful
I did one in my 77 Jimmy automatic with a tilt steering wheel and it worked. The only problem was I was going in for surgery on my sinuses and my headache was driving me crazy but I still got it done. Adjusting the rod was the only thing that I had to adjust once. Not bad for an idiot.
Turned out my problem was neutral safety switch. But this helped along the way. Also put a lot of new hardware in as well. Thanks
Glad it helped
This will be my project for the coming weekend. Thanks for the info. My '81 does the same thing.
Have fun!
Thanks for the video man. You saved me a whole lot of trouble.
Glad I could help
Thank you for providing these videos!

Very helpful my 81 c10 has it on the side of the column but still had to drop the steering wheel to access the bolts thanks for the video
Glad it helped
excellent video, exactly what I was looking for.
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate you, fixed and rollin now
Very welcome, happy it was helpful
good video. this is why my el camino would not start . i had power and fuel and new cap and rotor and fairly new wires and plugs . the ignition start switch was toast like yours . luckily i had a complete steering column from another el camino that i was able to rob. works good again. cheers
Happy the video was helpful
I changed mine today. This was a very helpful video. Mine is automatic, but it was still very helpful! (Tighten the new switch all the way or it will have your key switch in a bind when you turn the key. Don't ask me how I know this!)
Happy the video was useful, and that is great info
I replaced mine cause I’m having this exact same issue. Now when i turn the key it binds a lot and the key doesn’t retract when i try to start it. It turns the power on but it doesn’t start, it binds and doesn’t retract. Does it have to do with it being loose?
I never like a video but your personality made me think about a like 😂💪🏽 good stuff man
Awesome! Thank you!
Gotta say man. Good attitude and a great explaination. Thank ya sir for putting out this video i couldnt find any other video that showed exactly what i needed to know to switch mine out on my 2500 suburban. Keep up the good work man

Mine looks just like yours did. It's getting replaced good or bad. I didn't see any one mention the assortment of spings, pins, and contacts that fell out when I pulled it apart to have a look inside.

Ok I have a motorhome and it's doing the samething. Ok but my starter has R terminal and S terminal witch I have hooked up the S terminal. I raned the S terminal to the battery and a hot wire of the distributor to the battery it cranks. ok do you think it's the same problem I'm having do you think I need to drop the steering column what you think
Fist have you tryed to start it in natural
Thanks exact thing I’m dealing with
It can be a pain
Thank you so much
Thanks for watching
Thanks man
Very welcome
Damn that thing starts up nice !
Thanks, it was a really good engine but seen a many a mile, the truck is now getting a LS engine
Lol.. I'm about to watch your video to solve a wiring problem on my 76 Impala 😅
Good luck!
I got no crank no start trying everything even test light on those wires all power there and 2 grounds on that is brown and green as power would that mean it fused it the 2 grounds as power now
I just find out this video thank u for the info but what’s the name of that part ?
Hey man thanks for the video, but my 1979 chevy still won't spark ive changed the distrubter, the switch, the wires, also the starter and tested them on another truck and they work but I for the death of me can't figure out whats causeing it to not spark. Do you have any idea?
Hi friend, I have your exact same problem. I too have a 79 model and when I turn the key nothing lights up, it looks dead.
Hey thanks for the video, it helped me fix my truck. I’m having issues putting the rod back in the switch though. My rod is pointed up towards the ceiling. I think it’s suppose too point to the passenger side door. Do you recall the direction yours was pointing? Thanks for the video man!
I had a time getting that back in to when I removed mine lol I failed to note what way it came out lol
I have to do this in my 76 k20. Excellent video!
Happy you found it helpful, have more videos on this c30 coming soon
I’ve got a 87 getting power and cranking fine but not getting any power to the fuel pumps, I’ve replaced the fuel switch for tanks, replaced fuel pump relay and pumps are maybe a year old. Weird part before it started doing this you had to pull up on the shifter shoving it into park further to get it to start.
Have you took a volt meter to the fuel pump plugs and see if power is their, and if not check your tank switch valve and see if its getting power cause it should be what sends power to both pumps
Just bought an 86 K30. Drove it to north to get some plates on it and I am having a similar problem. I am going to tear through it in the morning and see if this is the problem. I will keep you posted if it works.
Best of luck, also check your safety switch
@@TattsForLife So after further investigation I found out that whoever ran the battery cable decided to run it along side the exhaust manifold and it was melted through. Replaced and rerouted the cable. Problem fixed.
Thanks bro..I just changed the key Switch.. Which wasn't fun at all..lol now moving on to the switch.. Sure hope it works..
If it dont, try the neutral safety switch
Where is the switch located? Mine is a 3 on the tree
@@holinessorhell1964 should be on the clutch pedal, have two wires going to a switch. U can cross the wires over to see if it will start
@@TattsForLife Thanks again brother..
@@holinessorhell1964 welcome let me know if it works
I'm wondering if this switch would be the culprit for a truck that won't shut off? I twist the key and it continues to run, but sometimes it'll turn off too. I'm wondering if this is beginning to fail. Thanks, great video and really helpful for many.
Yes that would be a sign
Will this work for the 6.2 Detroit diesels as well it’s a 83 k20
should be same cause Chevy don't change interior parts often
Shit, I hope I don't have to do all that! You fixed yours easy enough now come fixing mine.😎🇺🇸..seriously, thanks man.
lol Hopefully your repair goes great
I bought a 84 k5 at first it would crank but not start. Barely started for a second back fired died and won’t even crank now any ideas? It’s got an hei distributor and supposedly a new motor. I thought timing Bc it would just crank and crank but not start.
back fire can be from bad dissy or coil, or a bad cam, or bad fuel could be many things, make a list and check it off one by one
What is the part called that the ignition switch sits on that connects to the ignition. When I was replacing it it came loose.
It’s the part that sticks up that the ignition switch sits on
Great video I have an 80 camaro with the same problem whats the name of That part
Ignition Switch
Thank you
Happy to have helped
My brother is having the same problem for his 1983 truck but the thing is his truck was working fine but he got stuck in mud like really bad stuck and me and my brother were trying to move it and he put in overdrive 1 then after that the truck turned off he turned it on again but it wouldn’t start no crank no start but you can see it still had power cause of the little red sign
I stumbled across this video . working on my dads 1978 chevy 10 with 350 HEI ingnition and automatic . he drove it it shut off then he was able to start it and drive it home and parked it . went to start it no spark but turned over. We replaced the rotor , cap , icm and coil . hooked everything back up like it's suppost to be now no crank and no spark? Battery good cables and all wires in the engine bay have been tested. Replaced the starter and replaced the ignition switch on the column and neutral safety switch still no crank or spark but the dummy lights at the bottom of the dash lights up like yours???? I checked all fusible links. So I'm guessing its the in the wiring between the switch and the bulkhead???? We tested the pickup coil it seem to be with in specs on the ohms meter ?
sorry for the late reply, can you shorten down what is happening? or have you got it fixed yet?
@@TattsForLife basically it ran then shut off in traffic then he started it back up drove home. went to start it the next day and it just turns over . we replaced every single electrical component and still nothing? check all wires under the hood even fusable links all good. i replaced the ignition switch and netural switch. then I narrowed it down to the bulk head wire connections or the wires from the bulk head to the ignition switch . i had to take out the distributor in order to replace the pickup coil. then thats where the 2nd problem started.i previously marked the location where the distributor was facing including the direction of the rotor. went to put it back in and it wont fully engage? there is less then a 5/16 gap from the bottom of the distributor base to the base on the intake . I feel the teeth engage but it seems like the oil pump shaft or gear is catching on something? I have shined a bright light down in the hole from the back of the intake to the top of the oil pump but cant see anything? I guess we're at the point of pulling the oil pan and oil pump off and see if it goes back in ?
Sounds like the oil pump shaft isn’t splines into the distributor, and replacing everything won’t fix it if it doesn’t have voltage at the distributor
@@MoparMan-ff8fb I have a '76 k5 jimmy that's doing the exact same thing rite now..?.?
@@childofsmokeyhollowkidzyo2680 I think I'm going to have to drop the oil pan remove oil pump drop in the distributor and put in a new oil pump shaft and oil pump to fix the problem. I think the oil oil pump is the cause of the problem. it a high milage piece of shit with a possible loose shaft that comes out of the pump
Could the is be the reason why my starter clicks then start, and I have some days where it starts normally -thaks
do you have a ground from motor to the body, and a ground from motor or body to frame, and a ground from frame to battrey, and one ground from engine to battrey?
Well i bought a truck 454 auto, and the ignition was gone (the entire lock assy) but the rod that selects the position on the ignition switch was stuck for some reason. I freed it and now when i get it into the position with the dummy light on i doesnt attempt to start.
This is also a truck that will only run with the starter engaged
When the light is on it need pushed in a bit futher to engage the starter, then u let off and it will be in the run position
Without replacing the ignition switch will turning the tumbler still give accessories power. My tumbler doesn't turn very far either but I got power to everything except it won't even try turning over.
Oh there isn’t any chipped key or anything like that in a square body so yeah if you can get the lock cylinder to turn over accessories should come on and it should start if it doesn’t I suspect the issue is somewhere else
@@TattsForLife so starter, wiring, distributor?
@@TattsForLife for context it's a 1982 c30 dually with the 350. Been sitting for 8 years.
Hope this is my problem! I’ve taken off the starter, got it checked, cleaned and re-spliced all the wires, changed battery’s, etc… Has to get towed home for $220! I’m going to check this it right now!
Good luck, if its not this, then check the neutral safety switch, both will cause a no start
Guess I’ll try the Safety Switch because that didn’t fix it! 😿 Thanks!
Thanks
Your welcome
I think I’m Having the same problem... but I went to crank my 79 k10 and all of a sudden I herd a zapping and smoke? And I traced all wires and fuses and they are all fine and have power but no lights, heat, or ignition(cranking) please help!!
that would be a short, you must of over looked it, you can check your fuse box and see if any are blew most likely when it shorted out you lost a fuse or two
Would that switch also cause it not to shut off?mine starts fine but wont shut off Thanks
yes it could cause that issue
