this is the definitive performance of Prokofiev's 4th available on youtube (and there aren't many performances of it!). Also this is a much more live hall than any of the others recorded.

Beautiful performance, orchestra, conductor, camera work. Love many of Prokofiev's other works. My first exposure to this symphony.

Well-played beautiful music. It reminds me most of his ballet scores, "Cinderella"and "Romeo and Juliette". Also very much like his fifth symphony. I hope to have a chance to play this in a good orchestra some time.

He borrowed from his ballet The Prodigal Son to form the original 4th symphony (Op. 47). Some it still remains in this work, though buried deep.

Love this performance! But was that a wrong note in the piano chord at 1:34?

an opera suite. not much of a symphony.

What about 2nd movement? Perfect symphonic andante... With one of the best melodies in all symphonic music of 20th century. Reminds me of the second movement of Tchaikovsky 1 piano concerto...

It's based in fact on his music for the ballet The Prodigal Son, not for an opera. The third symphony was based on music for an opera, The Fiery Angel, but Prokofiev insisted on the symphony being entirely independent from the opera and telling its own symphonic narrative, though with the same musical themes as the opera.

@@lylecohen1638 Right, correct. I mixed the two up. I've played the Third and know the opera. Regardless, the third and fourth symphonies don't hold up as symphonies like the fifth and sixth do; that's not to say they don't include fine music. But structure was not a strong point with Prokoviev, as the third and fourth symphonies demonstrate. And the interpretation of Gergiev here, or the lack of one, doesn't help. The reading of the first movement alone is pretty incoherent.
