    Very good touch point topic! I switched to the naturalistic hydration method and built a hybrid enclosure (only because I live north of the border, no shipping at this time for Dragon Strand). Our chameleon has never been better! I check for signs of hydration as you went over here and in other podcasts and things a much better. Which to me equates to heathier! Thanks for the ongoing support to the hobby!

    Thanks for the information... How would you know if your Chameleon is impacted...???

      Keeping track of the bottom of the cage is a good way. Once you get used to your chameleon's habits you can start to get concerned when you see food go in, but none coming out.

    My chameleon will go back and forth from having white to orangish urate.. he seems to do better when we feed him hornworms but would like him to drink enough on his own. I think we have the lighting/heat set up right and we mist 5 times a day to keep the humidity up but we still can’t get consistently good looking urate.

  • @alantang3259
    @alantang3259 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you think there are detrimental effects of misting while the lights are on? In the UK the advice is to mist 3 times a day (panther) while the lights are on. No fogger is used at night as the humidity is relatively high.

      There is no detrimental connection between light and fog/mist. The concern is heat and humidity which can be created by heat lamps and foggers. So this is a case where we have to step back and understand why the soundbite of light and fogging was made and what it really means.
      So the answer to your question really depends on the temperature and ventilation of your enclosure.

      @@ChameleonAcademy thanks for your reply, I have a mesh cage with ambient temps of around 21 C and basking of 28 C (4 month panther). we are advised to not use a fogger and rely on 3 mistings and a dripper during the day.

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alantang3259 that is one approach. Fogging has become needlessly political and so is one area that you need to understand each component to get the true picture. The whole purpose of fogging is to increase the humidity so if your nighttime humidity is high naturally then you don’t have to supplement it.
      One reliable way to know what husbandry works is to learn from people with panther chameleons that keep them in an area that is like yours. Now, it is your responsibility to ensure the person telling you how to take care of your chameleon lives in an area like you because social media is filled with people insisting that every one take. Are of their chameleon like they do regardless of environmental conditions.

      @@ChameleonAcademy thank you, it is so nice to hear a calm reasoned approach to chameleon husbandry. So often it's 'you're doing it wrong as it's not my way ' .

    I have a Jackson’s Xanthelophus and I try to set up a dropper cup every day.. I stopped doing this for awhile because he ignored it all the time but recently I started it again. I still don’t see him drinking from it so is it okay to stop it? I see his poops but I’m always late to the game and they’re dried up when I see them. I have a fogger going from 1 am to 5 am every night as well as a mistking that goes off every 2-3 hours from 7 pm to 7am. Isn’t that enough? I appreciate these vids a lot!

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If he is ignoring the dripper cup then that is a good sign that he does not need more water. Chameleon hydration is a little unnerving for us humans because we have to trust in the lack of a behavior! It sounds like you have a good hydration set-up. So just keep an eye out for the poop and you can check with the dripper cup a couple times a week just to make sure.
      The panther chameleon I this video consistently ignores the dripper cup, but I do it a couple times a week just to make sure. You could do the same with your Jackson's and just test a couple times a week.

    Ok but then what do you do when they are straight up refusing to drink and I can tell they are dehydrated

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว

      If they are dehydrated and refusing to drink there is something else very wrong. You’ll have to figure out what that thing is.

    Could I use a dripper at night?

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A dripper wouldn’t be the most effective way to increase humidity. You would need a fogger, humidifier, or mister
