  • ADHD is not a farce. It is the result of a deficiency of a specific brain neurotransmitter called norepinephrine. In this video, learn more about how the ADHD brain and nervous system function, and why it’s sometimes so difficult to diagnose and treat symptoms.

Why the hell don’t more people explain ADHD this way?? Just saying it’s a disorder that makes it hard to focus doesn’t really tell you anything, but explaining physiologically that it’s literally something wrong with the brain makes me feel far more validated than just saying “you have trouble focusing”

    • @basil9633
      @basil9633 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

People do this with alot of disorders with the brain because our interaction with the disease is usually only the symptoms. Alot of people just don't care enough to learn about the actual difference in biology to a normal person. However when you do take the time it makes perfect sense. For example when we learn things like the reduction of over all brain size in ADHD patients. As well as the reduction in size of the amygdala and frontal cortex we understand why we see things like impulsivity and heightened emotion.

Well, my psychiatrist didn't exactly explain the neuroscience behind my diagnosis, so I'm willing to bet a lot of other people with ADHD don't know this stuff either.

Exactly, for me I first diagnosed myself this way before I knew what adhd was, after 7th-8th grade, I understood that I was different, not just in school but also when I talked to friends, they would always tell me how whatever I was saying made no sense so I just connected the dots on everything about how I act on the neurological level even though I was just a freshman and only used my knowledge of a short bio unit 7th grade. I realized everything that I do is determined on the dopamine that is produced when I do that activity. So I quickly concluded that I either need more dopamine to “satisfy” my brain or I just produced less dopamine than other people and after a quick google search 2 years later turns out I was as accurate as I could have got with what I little I knew.

I'm sorry, but for those of us with ADHD & dyslexia, it's very hard to read subtitles, with music in the background!
Unless we are hyper focusing, most ADHDers with dyslexia have hard time reading anyways. Often we can read a sentence 10 times or more and not have a clue what it said because we were distracted halfway through.
During a video, that means we constantly have to pause it to grasp the idea, which is really to much work for the effort. I'd rather read the transcript.
Just a tip. A simple HUMAN voice over, with subtitles would make this video 1000 times better!
    (Edited to clarify)

Don't try to speak for everyone, ADHD is a very complex spectrum disorder and we still barely understand how it works. Many people will have very different experiences, I prefer music or background stimulation because I focus best with the right amount of stimulation, not enough and I'll just zone out completely. It's one of the reasons people fidget, so that they have enough baseline stimulation to pay attention (but it happens unconsciously).

I'm like which one should I go for, the music? The brain or the texts? Haha although most of the times music do help. So yes it's a big spectrum actually.

This video explains the working of the brain simply and effectively with intriguing images and just the right amount of information. It is well-made and professional-looking. Not only did it help me understand my ADHD, it will be a useful tool to help family and friendsd understand that it is a condition of the brain and not a "behaviour:. At the same time, I also found the music annoying and distracting, and had to click on the microphone icon to mute the video. What bothered me even more is the two pop-ups that appear on the "basal ganglia" page (50 secs) and remain to the end of the video, obscuring text and images. Why would you choose to do this when you could have included this info on a separate page after the presentation was over? It is common for a TH-camr to include a small suggestion box at the very top or bottom of the screen on the last page of a video, but they don't block the video and the viewer can click on an "x" to make them go away.

I’d love to see studies done on not only our deficits, but how our brains work around them and how we differ from other people in positive ways as well. I have ADHD and it hinders me, but I also feel sometimes I have a way of thinking that is useful because it’s something others wouldn’t have thought of.

Too fast? Distracting music? HERE'S HOW TO SLOW THIS VIDEO DOWN to 50% speed so you can better absorb and comprehend it: Takes 5-seconds using TH-cam's built-in PLAYBACK SPEED CONTROL:
•• Move your mouse/cursor onto the video window; this exposes the RED TIMELINE BAR and the icon buttons below it.
•• Click the GEAR icon on the RIGHT SIDE beneath player
(usually the 2nd icon, to the right of the ON/OFF switch )
•• A popup appears with 2 controls: PLAYBACK SPEED and Quality.
•• Click the RIGHT-ARROW, then click "0.5" . This will slow the video down to half its normal speed.
•• Now replay the video, you'll like it this time!

I usually set and watch videos at '1.75x' playback speed. This video was easier to follow and read when set at 'normal' playback speed. To change playback speed, click on Settings ( ⚙, upper right of video next to CC, Closed caption). Hope this helps someone.

Theoretically, impulsivity could also be affected by the prefrontal cortex as this is the part where we make decisions right? If we are impulsive we must short circuit that part of the brain as we react too fast to a decision 🤔

This is something I've never been able to comprehend. We all know it's 100x hard ENOUGH for all of us to be gaslit by our health providers, close friends and family - all convinced they know "all about ADHD" when all they know is the Childhood Model- which to the public means "and you take stimulant medicine" and all is fine. So I completely agree, when it comes to publishing materials intended for late diagnosed adults or anyone just now learning how our neurologies work, it is depressing for such a reputable institution like AdditudeMag to not have a clue about signal processing distractions of all kinds. Be they two different streams of people talking, or talking plus music with words, or an animated graphic effect and so on, Just Don't Do It. And do penance for having done so here; know your subject matter domain and audience.
