This video is gold bro. You got that TASTE for a high quality TH-cam video, the discernment to put it together, and the wisdom to make it happen.Great job!
Nowadays, people are offended when we say having bad taste is possible. They tell things like beauty is subjective and someone’s truth isn’t more wrong than some other. They confuse personal appreciation and attachment to a thing with quality of that thing.
I think Rubin’s genius comes from his taste + self confidence in his opinions. It’s a soft confidence, a willingness to try things without judgement outside of “This does or doesn’t sound good to me.” And under those criteria, because of his taste, that’s enough. He trusts himself.
as a guy with grey hair who makes viral videos all the time for brands, I can relate. It's a feeling. A way of looking things and knowing what people will feel when they see it.
Taste equals not technical mastery but technical understanding. Basically consumption of so many high quality models that you have an innate understanding of not just what works or what doesn't work but what works best.
I completely agree. We can't just consume the same thing over and over again and expect different thoughts. An eclectic and diverse appetite will lead to more satisfaction and more synapses snapping.
I was going to reply to the specific comment down below but I'm not giving the individual any of my time. As much as this content lends itself towards being a 'faceless' channel and that you need to get more comfortable on camera lol, I'm pretty happy with your current way of making videos. Love your breakdowns and editing style. Never seen someone more comfortable talking about relatively high level content concepts.
"show me something you love", I really can't express how much I love ur videos. ive grown sick of social media (tik Tok, insta, YT shorts, etc) I feel like everyone has so much potential in life that gets thrown out cause of what they consume. I pray that ur platform reaches people so that more people understand that they aren't doing things wrong, they just aren't going at it the right way.
also I seen someone comment about ur standing and sitting... I didn't even notice or pay it any mind till they said something, I thought it was kinda swaggy keep doin yo thang bro
Soomething about this editing. Maybe it's because you're moving around or showing your "mini mistakes" and jokes. Anyways, I loved it all. You've got good taste, Jay. Keep it up
Jay, YOUR videos are quality that I want to consume. This video must have taken so much effort to make, I was blown away by how you put all the pieces of what you talked about together. One cohesive masterpiece.
Jay is like my weekly dose of philosophical TH-cam meditation. A friendly little reminder about all the important topics that go unnoticed by the general populace that is the art of making videos for TH-cam. I'm curious why you didn't add an end screen to this videos though. Wouldn't the addition of an end screen increase session times for this video's performance?
The problem is this advice is poison to society. For every Rubin or Jobs that succeeded, there's a thousand others who think they're creative geniuses with zero skills trying to push their ideas on other people. If this really worked, you'd be able to name more than five people like this.
great video, idk if u take suggestions but itd be cool if you made a video on kanye since the way he began is very inspiring imo, espc after watching the 'jeen-yuhs' documentary on him on netflix
I'm selective with what I consume as well, especially when it comes to videos. In fact, TH-cam knows me pretty well that it suggests some awesome videos but I can't get to them all. So I think establishing connection with your viewers is going to be more important than ever, especially in a very saturated space. You're right, creativity is not something that can be written as a math formula. Just check out the scene in the Dead Poets Society when they read a definition of poetry and how to measure good poetry, and their teacher (Robin Williams), rightfully so, tells his students to rip out those pages because it's insane to measure the beauty of something creative as poetry. And a lot has to do with people's taste as well. Anyway, sorry for a bit of a longer comment, but I really enjoyed this video. Perfect balance of casual and prepared parts of the video and the script.
Enjoyed the simplicity of your vid, again. I've seen a few comments summarising how Taste + Confidence in that taste + Repetition = Gold. What are your thoughts on the idea everyone has their own Taste, they just need to be confident in their Taste (and repeat it 100x) to attain 'success'?
Everyone certainly has their own taste and it’s almost about ‘discovering’ it, rather than ‘developing’ it (which is definitely helped by repetition of anything creative)
@@thejayalto For sure, I think we're seeing a real shift into the world of 'Creators' who are truly themselves, regardless of viewcounts and brands are starting to realise that's where the real influence is. Good talking with you and looking forward to the next vid.
Great video. You say that you control what's coming in, trying to increase the good, but also trying to keep out the bad, yeah? Do you think it's important to keep out the bad, though? I think a huge part of taste is looking at bad stuff that got out there somehow, then trying to figure out why it's prolific enough for us to see it + why it's even bad at all. If you know why something's bad, you'll be able to delete the bad stuff out of your own stuff.
I like it. Very good point. Some exposure to ‘bad’ work isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I think the same thing also goes for the creator - you learn more from your bad work than your good work.
No hate, but at 08:04, you say "vicariously" when you meant to say "voraciously". VICARIOUSLY means "experienced through someone else's actions" whilst VORACIOUSLY means "with excessive eagerness". I think the opposition of these two statements makes an interesting juxtaposition, but great video nevertheless.
maan if this video was well edited , you could have got some really good views , the script as already good , and the way you speak is really good , you only miss some good editing
I really enjoy your content but you need to get comfortable... This walking around sitting down standing up malarky is very distracting from what is an otherwise great piece of content. Either get a big comfortable chair, a desk and a decent mic stand or fill your video with photos and B roll. This type of content lends itself towards being a 'faceless' channel. No offence 🙂 Maybe research 'talking head videos on YT' get some ideas... Everyone here thinks you're on to something with your channel.
Don’t apologies, all feedback is useful. First video standing. I certainly felt more comfortable but probably just need to find the balance. I’ll keep working on it.
i personally think its more authentic rather than distracting, if you did a more conventional approach it would remove some personality from your channel
You mention you are careful what you "consume" such as Shorts & TikTok. I tend to agree. I don't think I am well served by spending much time watching those kinds of videos other than staying current. I also believe creativity and taste can be developed over time.
As a music artist that uses AI.... it's the same. The sense of taste and vision is what is most important. That is the job of more senior people in every creative field. That's why the grunts do the actual leg work, and the art DIRECTOR is the one who guides it and decides where things should be headed.
you start out watching Jay's videos with no questions in mind, but you leave with existential crisis....
We’d be nowhere without a weekly existential crisis
This video is gold bro.

Taste is dangerous. Trusting your taste is lethal.

Your synapses certainly snapped with this comment sir
This channel is going to be huge one day. Always great stuff, Jay!
Maybe…
@@thejayaltoThe maybe for me though 😂
When you in fact know you're going to be big soon
You know it's serious when Jay is standing up the whole vid
I’m entering my standing era
So much info wow! Being mindful of all that we consume & what we project out to others!
Love this young man’s life approach!!
I am the young man?
Jay! This is one of my favorite videos of yours yet. Really great work. Deep insight. I think it's spot on. Please keep doing what you're doing.
Appreciate it, Adam! Plenty more to come
Brilliant. Very tasteful, and very useful too. (As always!)
Appreciate the support
This video was lowkey eye opening lol! Ima use this to make some great stuff🙏

Another solid video and a concept that we need to discuss more in the creative community.
Thank you, Austin

We accommodate everyone here
Thank u for this video man!
My pleasure

I believe they have all taken psychedelics…

I like walking Jay more 😅😅
Why limit yourself to a chair?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on Generative AI.
I made a video a while ago on it - definitely something I’ll speak about again

Taste - the only thing left a designer has over AI
Keep up the great work Jay! Rick Rubin’s book: The Creative Act is a must read/listen
It’s a fantastic book. I often re-read.
Love this video, Jay! And, I like the stand-up discussion vibe. It made you seem comfortable and relatable.
I’m glad to hear - certainly felt more comfortable filming, and glad it came across

I like how you present information. Straight forward and without much flash but quite engaging.
Less noise, more signal
