I remember when the old quilt police said that we had to hand quilt 12-15 stitches to the inch. And I got very good at it. But it wasn't until about 10 years ago that I saw Liz Porter from Fons&Porter do hand quilting in big stitches. And to me they were huge. Right then I thought I will do whatever I want in the future and not care what others opinions were. And THAT's made me a better quilter. Nice quilt by the way.
I think if you gift a quilt ,nobody says look at those stitches.I am sure that your quilts are beautiful, and the recipient is happy. Because if the police looked at my machine stitches, they would see plenty of mistakes.
As an experienced big stitch quilter, you really made life difficult for yourself. The back stitch is very simple just do a tiny stitch then back stitch over that one hiding the small stitch underneath Do not use floss, use Perl cotton number 8 no Ned to walk and it will run through the work so easily. Then you can quilt without marking. Your eye will get very used to it and go right the way through. It gives a much nicer feel to the quilt and finally you can quilt on your lap. Just pick up your quilt put it on your sofa with you and enjoy a film or Netflix and give it a go. The colours on the back are the colours that you have chosen so you won’t see them on the back. Finally big stitch quilting is essentially a running stitch and the way to get even stitches is to stitch away from you and put several on your needle all at one.
❤😊 I actually quit all sewing because of this very reason!! Finding Tracy has given Me the Want too get back into ❤😊 I gave everything away literally about 20 years ago, so my bit is do loo ike Tracy ❤😊WHAT EVER U BEST ENJOY, AND ENJOYING UR JOY'S ❤😊 Enough Talking Already 😉😊😊
Love your quilt and the big stitching. Just one tip from an experienced embroiderer and cross stitcher. Lick the needle eye not the thread. The thread will expand when wet, but when you wet the eye of the needle the thread will want to soak up the wet and, thus will move through the eye of the needle.
First I want to offer congratulations on the grandchild! That's enough to make you go down a rabbit hole of quilting. The center of the quilt is definitely the star of the quilt, I would keep the clown border simple because as you said it really won't show much. It also can't compete with the center diamonds. It's so fun to see your quilt, newly made look vintage, probably not the intention but I love it!
What a beautiful quilt. This is really a treasure for the new baby. There's nothing about this quilt that I don't like. The big stitching really defines the diamonds and looks so good!!! Great job Tracy 🤡🤡🤡
As I sit here recovering from my knee replacement Watching your video made me remember hand tying all them Quilts in the late 70s and early 80s how the yarn color would run into the quilt 🤦♀️ We have come a long way in 50 years how I wish I had color catchers back then
Beautiful quilt Tracy! I absolutely love it! I think I would FMQ the borders because I don’t think the big stitch quilting would show much in the busier clown fabric. So cute!! 💕
Gorgeous quilt Tracy, such a brilliant idea to make the diamonds with the clown fabric colours - looks amazing. Thank you, love it when I see a new video from you, Vonney UK
LOL, I love the music towards the end. That was funny. Cingrats on the grandbaby news. I enjoyed this tutorial and watched it in 3 sections throughout my day. TFS
Last weekend I big-stitched a twin size, 1st time I tried it, using 12 weight cotton thread. I stay-stitched the sashing & borders by machine, knotted at each end, & went through the backing. I FMQ'd the borders. I'm sold on this technique & will use it again. Nice tutorial & hints.
I love watching your quilting channel because you show the whole finished quilt. The batting used, the back, the edge binding & the fee motion stitches. Which is what my mind needs. I love your circus quilt!
Beautiful quilt. A work of art, every stitch made with love. It😮 reminds me of things I’ve made for my grandchildren and when finished I’ve said, “Never Again”. Maybe you cd consider, for your borders, taking a shape from the clown fabric… say a ball or a hat….and long arm them in, or maybe the technology within your machine has got shapes you cd use…. Small circles for eg. I wdnt go for leaves or stars, I wd go for something that is in the clowns. And, I thought that if you had started stitching your squares….1 stitch down from the start….you would have had the space for your back stitch. Nevertheless you have done MEGA FABULOUS WORK. When I’m doing close work like this I can be heard to mutter, “man on a galloping horse”….. many times…… well, a man on a galloping horse wd never notice my wee mistake and in the normal scheme of things, every day rough and tumble etc, little slips of our needles go un-observed. (Except, maybe by the holder of the needles). I used to knit Aran designs and sometimes I spotted a mistake long into the pattern…. too far in to unpick…only I noticed it so it was given up to the man on the galloping horse .
Love what you did with this quilt. It is so happy and bright, perfect for a baby. I would not hand stitch the black or clown border. I would stitch in the ditch on the black to make it stand out more and do something simple like straight stitching for the clown border. Well done! Enjoy your channel so much........Hugs......Barb
Before I watched the entire video I started shopping for fabrics to make this quilt for my grandson who will be born June 11. I love using the swaddle fabric for the backing, and the border fabric being the focus fabric. Going to Hobby Lobby and JoAnne’s when they open. 😂. Thank you, Tracy.
Tracy, I am sure I will be copying this pattern. When I have a very busy boarder and know those corners will make me crazy, I use corner stones of a coordinating fabric. I love watching you figure out and adjust for any issues you come across cross. Thank you for all that you share with us. Congratulations on becoming a grandmother! It’s the best! ❤❤
I absolutely love the big stitches on that quilt. What a difference it made, looks amazing. I would definitely free motion quilt the large outer border with bubbles to represent balloons. I have no advice atm for the inner black border. I’ll have to ponder that for a minute. The quilt is just beautiful. Congratulations on the new grand baby.
I would FMQ on the outside border. As you say, it wont show. Your hand quilting is stupendous! A phenomenal quilt your granddaughter and your daughter will cherish. I love that you share your talent with us ever so humbly! Love you Tracy😊
So much love went into this quilt. My only suggestion is when separating the strands of floss, I was taught to take each string by pulling it out of the 6 that you cut. That way it won't knot and the strands will lay flatter when quilting. Congratulations on the new grand baby and beautiful work on the quilt.
Beautiful! I learn so much from you and you make learning fun! ❤Congratulations on your new granddaughter! I have a new one too and have been laboring over quilts, receiving blankets, etc!
You always make great tutorials with professional work all the way through. Thank you so much for sharing. Also, how lovely is it that one day your grandchild will be able to watch this video of you making this beautiful blanket. ❤😊
Your quit is beautiful. I was taught not to make big stitches in my hand quilting. I can still hear Mom saying, "She made stitches so big you can hang a toe nail in them." Threading the needles (while sitting on the floor under the quilt frame) became my job, when Mom found out I could thread a needle. How she thought I could see well enough to thread a needle under there Is something I have never understood. However some of the other children helped me thread those needles. We were all under there to keep us out of trouble.
I love your imagination and creativity and how you give yourself grace. I love big stitch quilting. I worried about your finger as you pushed the needle through. I cannot live without my clover leather thimble. So glad you enjoyed hand quilting ❤
Love the diamond (harlequin) layout! Here's a tip for those who don't like to eyeball for the join: Marti Michell's Deluxe corner trimmer is the Swiss Army Knife of corner clippers. The 45 degree angle will blunt the tips and provide a perfect, no-guesswork alignment. Also when joining the seams for your r/c's, there is a perfect 1/4 dot to help mark alignment. Saves alot of ripped stitches.
Congratulations Tracy on your new grandbaby coming!!! So exciting! I love being a grandmother. Your quilt is adorable, and I love the colors and design. I clicked on the info about the Laura Star iron system. OUCH$$. I can barely afford new quilt fabric these days. It is interesting, though.
Great quilt and great tutorial! To keep with the circus theme, you could stitch large balls or circles into the border. Can't wait to see what you decide. Please put it on TH-cam, even if it's a short. Thank you for sharing.
I love this, Tracy!! You have such great projects. FMQ the borders. Big Stitch quilting will not show and it’s a wasted effort. Another reason to FMQ is to help stabilize near the edges where you started and stopped. The buried threads will remain buried because the batting is not shifting when the quilt is moved around. I love this fabric! So cute! No grand babies for me but I’m not upset about it.
Always enjoy that you create your own unique quilts. Maybe stitch in the ditch on each side of the black with dark invisible thread. In the clown border free motion different sized circles with tails like balloons.
Thank you so much for the tutorial - loved it all . When I watch you I feel like I, too can free motion quilt and for sure I can do the big stitch quilting. Thank you again
I think FMQ the clown border in circles like balloons with black thread in the top thread. Leave inner black border alone and finish edges with black fabric. Quilt is beautiful! Love it!
It’s beautiful and what a great heirloom for your grandchild to have for many years. You did a great job. I find adding a little hand sewing so relaxing and enjoyable also. Love the music at the end lol
Hi Tracy this is another fantastic tutorial, thank you so much I’ve always wanted to try and make a diamond quilt but always put it off because I wasn’t sure how to do it. I love the fact that I don’t have to spend money on special rulers or templates, you’ve given me the confidence to give it a go!!! You are amazing thank you ❤❤l❤ 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Tracy, I love this quilt! I would quilt the borders in big stitch quilting in the shape of the diamonds. it will give continuity to the quilt. I would even stitch the black in yellow thread msybe in a smaller diamond pattern. This qit rocks the big tent girl!!!! Oh, and I love the music, it's amazing!!!
I wouldn't worry about the black area. it isn't that big. If you can do free motion quilting, I would do that in the border because of the swings and *clowning around* theme. Looks great. Congrats on the baby to come. Bless you folks .
Hi Tracy. That's such an awesome quilt! I used to do counted cross stitch. This is how I used to "knot" the floss. Instead of using 3 strands, use two strands twice the length you need to sew. Fold the floss in half & put both ends of the strands through the eye of the needle. Do your first stitch & run your needle through the fold at the other end of the floss and pull it taut. The floss will be locked in place. In cross stitch, the knot is on the back side of the fabric, so I'm not sure how you can do it when you're not going completely through to the back side of the quilt. At the end of the strand, the floss gets buried in the fabric just like you demonstrated.
For the large border, I see overlapping large scallops, echoing the festoons of bunting you might see draped around the ring at the circus. •Then a simple, regular, smaller sine wave in the black border. It feels good to have the curves at the borders to complement the rest having straight lines. •I’m sure you will have fun no matter what you choose. 😉🪡🧵😎
Hi Tracy!! I started a big stitch quilt before Christmas and life happened so I never finished it. I love this quilt. You did a fantastic job!! I see nothing wrong with using red floss that will show up on the black and just doing straight lines up and down the border
We stitched ours with the small cotton crochet thread. That is how my mom and grandma taught us. I remember doing the rice sack ones with the flowers on them when I was very small. They came out beautifully warm which is what was needed.
Hi Pretty quilt. For the border use the template or just big stitches to keep it soft and fluffy like te rest of the quilt. It is already a lovely quilt. Great video and great idea
I love hand quilting and so glad you showed the big stitch method which I have never tried but definitely am now. Hope acid in spit okay cause baby spit going to be all over this quilt lol. Can't wait to see what you do on the border but I suggest big hand stitches all the way to back. Even if it doesn't show on front the detail will show when it's washed. Love your video. Thank you 😊
My first thoughts were to FMQ the border but I think diamonds running around the border would be perfect. I love the quilt and will definitely be trying the 60 deg angled diamonds.
I’ve done a couple of big stitch quilts. I found if I made sure that the knot would bump up against a seam it helped with the pulling through problem. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but it certainly helped me. I’ve not used just regular embroidery thread though. I’ve always used Pearl cotton thread size 8 or size 10 by DMC.
I love your quilt Tracy. I also love to big stitch quilt. I'm concerned about no knots. Large stitches are easily caught with fingers. I don't use floss, but pearl cotton. Believe me with that your knots won't pull through once you get them hidden.😅 Congratulations on the addion to your family. The quilt should become a treasure to your daughters family.❤
I like what another poster suggested about doing diamonds in the borders, smaller ones in the black using a lighter shade like dark gray. For the outer border I would be stumped by what color to use. I fussed just as bad as you about making sure points/corners were 'perfect' for my first born's quilt and it turned out to fit a king sized bed. The second born's quilt was "OPPS, oh well close enough" and that was only a queen sized unit. (Both kids were in their late 30s)
I love this quilt center. In my opinion, a simple meander around the borders to finish it off would look good. I would hate to detract from that center. I love watching your tutorials and congratulations on the newest member being added to your family. 💟
Gorgeous quilt. I have just now finished a big stitch quilt, and I love it. I tried using embroidery thread but it tangled too much. I use #8 pearl cotton thread an it works well.
I first tried big stitch quilting with an Easter table runner a couple months ago and loved it. It’s very satisfying and adds lovely texture and color. I think do free motion in the borders which lets the hand stitched center be the showcase.
I love this quilt! The big stitch quilting really works well on this quilt pattern. I think you should free-motion quilt the outside border and maybe machine quilt some small diamonds on the black border with black thread on top and matching color thread on the back.
I think do a minimal FMQ in printed border. Whatever you feel secures the quilt. When you attach the binding, attach it to the back. When you come around to the front look on line at all the ways people use blanket stitch or big stich in a contrasting color to atttach the binding. No blind stitch. EG if you were to bind in black, then big stich the binding or blanket stitch if you feel that is more secure, in red or yellow and you will complete the look of the hand stitching throughout the quilt. I'm glad you had so much fun trying this. Sometimes I do mine on the front and sometimes on the back. But once I saw this a few years back, regardless of how much hand quilting I have done on the project, I hand stitch the binding so it can be seen and people know this is not a store bought item. Sometimes our quilts are too perfect :). I forgot you like to bind with minky. I don't know if it will work with that, but it does look adorable with flannel. Thanks for the video.
It looks so cute i think i would do free stiching you normally do for quilts and try and follow lines in the fabric or make shapes of stuff I'd see in a cuircus like the snack peanuts 🥜 or animals. You could still do it with the embrodery floss if you wanted to do it by hand and keep using the main colors throught it.
My bargello queen size quilt, I big stitched it. I used a back stitch ( as with embroidery a back stitch is the same) at the beginning. Since then, I have big stitched 3 other blankets. Your doing fine. As you get used to it, it becomes really easy. I do use a leather finger guard. As far as thread I use sulky 12 wt cotton.
Hi Tracy! I love your quilt! Love the music on this video. It reminds me of when the big top came to town in Lynchburg, Va where I grew up. I tried to like big stitch quilting, but I just dont. Too old school I guess or just plain old, but yours looks really neat. It does look more fun than regular hand quilting. I think you shoul fmq in that gorgeos clown border. You do everything good! Blessings!
I remember when the old quilt police said that we had to hand quilt 12-15 stitches to the inch. And I got very good at it. That pattern reminds me of Argyle. I like it.
Me too...must try this one 😊
She is going to LOVE her baby quilt you’re making!! I’m excited to see the finished product!!👀😂🤗❤

oh wow Sara! that would be horrible if the yarn bled.😱 Get better soon❣️
Beautiful quilt Tracy! I absolutely love it! I think I would FMQ the borders because I don’t think the big stitch quilting would show much in the busier clown fabric. So cute!! 💕
Licking is fine. I have been big stitching for years! They all look more interesting. Oh and it is called the rock and roll motion! ,love it!
TFS
I love you and your teachings
Fantastic Baby Quilt… I would do BIG STITCH all thru the black and wide border… it looks like so much fun♥️♥️♥️
I think you should continue big stitch quilting in the borders. I want to try big stitch quilting too. I love the look.
It definitely was fun watching you do all the work😍
I love watching your quilting channel because you show the whole finished quilt. The batting used, the back, the edge binding & the fee motion stitches. Which is what my mind needs. I love your circus quilt!

I think circles are a great idea!~Thanks❤️
I had a scrap of this fabric. I didn’t know it was a Michael Miller fabric. I used it up making some I Spy quilts. So cute! Congratulations!
Such a cute quilt!

Do big stitch balloons in the clown border ni bright colors. You will see hints of it in different angles.
It's beautiful. Really fun quilt. I enjoyed watching you overcome the challenges.
This quilt is gorgeous! Great Job grandma!
What an amazing quilt. I am stunned😮😊😮.

This quilt if so cute. You did a really awesome quilt.
Beautiful quilt!
Love it another great quilt Tracy
I would FMQ on the outside border. As you say, it wont show. Your hand quilting is stupendous! A phenomenal quilt your granddaughter and your daughter will cherish. I love that you share your talent with us ever so humbly! Love you Tracy😊
Stitch around both sides of the black border in black, then stitch the diamonds on the clown border in yellow. Just My suggestion.😊
Such a cute quilt! I would FMQ the borders with circles to mimic the balls and use a big stitch to hand bind it. Thanks for sharing!
❤ Love your diamond quilt! You always think outside the box! ❤
After I read “It”, I cannot abide clowns in any form! Thanks, Stephen K. 😂
But these clowns look so cute, far from creepy! But I thought “the Stephen King fans won’t like this!!!”
@sandrastreifel it took me awhile, as well! 😅🤡

Thank you so much for the kind words Debbie❤️
love big stitch quilting! I’d continue the big stitching throughout the entire quilt!😊
This is a very awesome quilt..
I love to hand quilt… trying for small stitches.. but really love the BIG ❤
That is all I ever do is big stitch quilting. I love it.
Congrats Grandma♥️ I Love how In depth your Videos always are, most definitely helpful for me bc I tend to need extra help. Thanks Tracy!

You are such a great teacher, thank you for this amazing creation!
What kind of batting did you use? Hobbs 80/20? It looks so puffy--, love it!

I love this quilt. It is really beautiful. Thanks for some great inspiration
Great Baby Quilt! And, I absolutely LOVE that clown fabric ❤😊
Beautiful , love the multi colours to match the clown fabric
Absolutely Beautiful quilt! So much fun. Any child would be very lucky to receive it!! I enjoyed watching this video!!
I think you did a great job with the diamond! You may have given me courage to this. Very professional looking!

Wow, this is a great idea! I’ve used it for cross stitch & sewing on buttons; but I never thought about using it for quilting! 🌷
Thank you for the tip Elaine❤️

We stitched ours with the small cotton crochet thread. That is how my mom and grandma taught us. I remember doing the rice sack ones with the flowers on them when I was very small. They came out beautifully warm which is what was needed.
These big stitches make a luscious quilted texture. My first time seeing or hearing of it. Great introduction and tutorial, thank you. 💙🪡😎
I agree...the texture is everything on this quilt due to the big stitching❤️
I do big stitch quilting on my channel pretty often and I love it 😜 I think it has kind of a folk art quality :P 👨🏻
I totally agree Dave! I think I'm hooked now haha🤣
Great tip bumping the knot on a seam✅
I love those diamonds - I can see a supersize diamond quilt! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks April...YES!! SUPERSIZE it!!!! 💠
Congratulations!!! 💓
Very Cute!
I know it...so nervous about it pulling out.....I will wash it first though and address any mishaps then...I'll keep ya posted❤️
❤❤ love this!
I will definitely try the pearl cotton next✅
Super cute! I would big stitch straight lines from the tips of the diamonds into the border… like piano keys.
I first tried big stitch quilting with an Easter table runner a couple months ago and loved it. It’s very satisfying and adds lovely texture and color. I think do free motion in the borders which lets the hand stitched center be the showcase.
Kudos to you for hand quilting. I learned quilting where we did all by hand (wall hangings) but my hands can't manage that anymore.
I think the big stitch in the center of the quilt is eye catching. I think free motion in the borders would create a nice balance.
Love your quilt!!! Thank you☺️
I love this quilt! The big stitch quilting really works well on this quilt pattern.
I think you should free-motion quilt the outside border and maybe machine quilt some small diamonds on the black border with black thread on top and matching color thread on the back.
So cute!!!! Grandbaby is going to love it.
Love the quilt. Some bright colors for that grand daughter to look at. Great job🎉❤
Thank you so much for this makes me wanna try to hand quilt ❤
Don't forget to protect from dye run in the wash. This is the most imaginative quilt I've seen. ❤😂❤
Blessings!
