    As a lance player, I feel like that's a weapon that naturally teaches you these concepts. It's a weapon where there is no such thing as making space, so you have no choice but to figure out how to survive without escaping from the monster's attacks. Blocking isn't just your main way to defend, but it's also your main crutch you need to learn to stop abusing, as lance has one of the lowest DPS in the game, so the only way to get decent times is to find ways to score hits in the smallest of windows. And it's not like lance has big attacks to push your DPS even higher, so you have no choice but to squeeze damage out by finding more opportunities to attack rather than simply finding ways to fit in your big attacks.
    It's so similar to GS, yet the exact opposite at the same time. They both teach the same lessons, but by going about it in completely opposite ways. GS teaches you how to find safe openings to strike, while lance teaches you that everything is an opening that just needs a smart application to be exploited safely.

      @@FGMagala Hey that’s a really interesting perspective! I would have never realized that since I don’t play lance, but what you’re saying makes sense. I can def see how you would have to make the most out of your openings similar to GS, especially if you’re soloing quests.

      Started as a GS and CB main, after the endgame I tried out lance and I have to say this description is really accurate. Lance teaches you this concept by default and it's a really rewarding playstyle and weapon the moment you get this way of play ingrained in your system. Lance made me a better GS and CB player too

      Something I like to say is that despite what it seems on the surface, once you learn how to play Lance it is the most agressive weapon out of them all. It demands that you are constantly a thorn in the monsters side at all times and never let up the pressure. Light weapons generally have to play more evasively with a lot of repositioning, and heavy weapons generally have to look for big openings they can commit themselves to, but the Lance wants to you see every single attack as an opening.
      Even before the addition of the Offensive Guard skill the Lance shined the most when fighting through the monsters attacks constantly.
      When I first picked it up I could never have expected how much this weapon, and its constant push through fangs, fire, and claws, made me feel like a berserker.

      As a lance main that's a terrible description for the lance, but it got the right idea (sorta). GS is my second main in World and my GS gameplay benefitted a lot from me being a lance main

    I was lucky enough that I clued into the mechanic by accident. My first run was pretty seamless but then when I did it again I couldn't do it for like 50 attempts which was frustrating as hell. I learned a lot about building lodouts though and other buffs/synergies which id been ignoring by just bulldozing through fights.

      @@trinitycat1723 Yeah the game doesn’t really do a good job explaining builds. I think by the time people get to Alatreon is when they start looking up builds and taking it seriously cause at that point it’s almost necessary. Can def relate to just brute forcing the earlier fights 😅

    • @Nynkx
      @Nynkx 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Firstly CONGRATS to this dude on the victory and video and I now might have a reason to fight Velkana for that armor cosmetics :P
      I haven't had much sense of a need to face them yet but coming back to MHW after a long time away feels very different this time around. I'm a lot more engaged in my personal loadout and I think that's because I wanted to focus on smooth gameplay as I expected to be playing with a personal squad. I Distinctly remember my first wall being Barroth and the birth of the concepts that he talks about here where I now forever know that I can attack barroth from his left side after a charge because his tail swings right. But at some point after getting that smooth I became complacent(discovering duel blades in the other titles probably didn't help xD) and started being sloppier aswell.
      Since coming back into Iceborne, that small focus on being cleaner in the fights has been bringing me a lot more enjoyment in the details again. That focus on cleanup could also be from preparing myself to dive straight into Wilds in Feb aswell :P But yes that's where the real gameplay meat is in MH. Finding your own Meta through a combination of learning your own openings and pairing it with self made builds that might offer you a unique playstyle. Because the details DO matter but not enough to ruin your game if you are not a player that goes that far. Few games manage to strike that beautiful balance.
      (extra thought/Hype)
      But that's why Alatraeon is controversial. It starts to put limits on your creativity which is a big spit in the face of what MH traditionally does right with difficulty which is soft failing you(faint 3 times before giving you a time out and space to reflect and retry), never hard failing you and in general that's a thing to be careful of in game design because it's essentially pulling you out of that game flow right as you're maybe getting comfortable being in the thick action.
      BUT the VERY cool news is that this is that the implementation of these mechanics seem so MASSIVELY different, even with the Velkana fight that as a game designer I see this as basically being the same kind of thing that they love to do which is test new boundaries that they want to build on because it adds value to MH multiple titles down the line. The evolution into expeditions, seemless locals in MHW, verticallity in Rise+ Hunter arts being mixed as wire bugs etc.
      These hard limits feel a lot like they are testing that very edge of what kind of HARD difficulty they can drive against the players. So I expect Wilds to potentially iterate and come out with something that might be a lot like an organic open world siege(rise tested multiple main monsters with rampages)where mechanics could get more detailed for whatever big monster they end up putting you against (they will have learned or new that hard failure is not quiet a good thing and may have been an oversight or something they went ahead with for neccesity reasons) because coincidentally if you think about Wilds, having you completely end a big hunt like Alatraeon by kicking you back to camp wouldn't really be a thing in an open world. That has me so excited to see what they might have been cooking up.

    Great Video. I actually started off as a Hammer user, then switched to Switch Axe due to the Zero Sum Discharge in World. Playing through the game as an Axe user made me understand and appreciate the challenges of the weapon: long swing animations, manage the sword gauge, short hop i-frames, keeping the power axe up, and making builds to support the weapon (evade window/extender and power prolonger). That thinking helped me to play different weapons and experiment with builds that support the weapon and use armor skills that not many players think about (for example, using Latent Power and Resentment with Safi armor to activate the skills due to the health drain using Dual Blades or Bow).

    As a CB player I had a very similar experience, alatreon and ATV were my biggest walls, though I did beat alatreon and ATV before fully grasping the "strategic hyper aggression" concept. But then, once I saw a TH-cam video titled "why you suck at mhw" or smth, and it described exactly how this concept works in MH games and how to be effective in dealing dmg. So I decided I wanted to get actually good at the game, and repeatedly fighting against alatreon and ATV made me fully understand the concept, and now I fully enjoy the combat in a much deeper level, beating endgame monsters faster than I ever thought I'd do. Now whenever I see someone struggling I try to explain this concept, it's good that you realized it and made a good video about it.

      Why ATV, it's not that much harder than normal velkhana which is pretty easy. As in what specifically made it so hard? Was it just that you weren't doing strategic aggression or were there other factors. I just don't get why people say it's so hard.

    • @Marshall47313
      @Marshall47313 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @JustAFishBeingAFish most likely due to the high HP and the higher dmg it does, enough to 1 shot/2 shot you, while also having only 30min time limit.

    • @JustAFishBeingAFish
      @JustAFishBeingAFish 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ yeah the HP is pretty high but all the oneshot attacks are quite easy to dodge and very telegraphed. The time limit is just obtuse though, was never a problem for me on ATV but on fatalis that timer is so unfair. Maybe the reason it's not a problem for me is because I play greatsword which is probably the easiest matchup. I can see how the timer and the moveset would be way harder on other weapons.

    • @rafaeljunmorita3558
      @rafaeljunmorita3558 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ As a CB player that didn't really absorb the moveset of the monsters and understood the actual size and positioning of the openings, it made the fight pretty hard when she does so much dmg, and then there's the DPS required to finish the quest within the time limit. IMO CB is kinda bad against her, and I focused too much in the mechanics of the weapon instead of the monster, so that's that. I never got good against the normal fight before ATV, I just fought her, and whenever I got hit I would heal, but ATV's higher aggression and dmg doesn't really allow for that, specially with CB being such a "clunky" weapon. So I would get hit and struggle to find an opening to heal.

I had no clue what he was talking about so I looked up a video about it on here & it was basically evading i-frames. After that I learned how to evade at the right times to avoid attacks while attacking back & shortly thereafter beat Alatreon. AT-Velkhana I ended up beating on my 2nd try due to learning that playstyle for Alatreon. I got a video up now of a build that beats Alatreon without breaking horns & without carting that I did for fun to show someone else it was doable. Lol. The sheer reward of making a guaranteed headbreak on a fatalis solo is so satisfying. The same thing applies to gunlance

    I came across this video a few weeks ago, but I admittedly stopped midway thru because I wanted to develop my own opinions on some of these fights, more specifically Alatreon, since I've been revisiting World with friends, and we haven't beaten him until very recently. Even after the first group clear, I decided to continue hunting him solo to get a better feel of his fight because I felt like I could improve. And I can say that after several days, I do find myself feeling comfortable going into the fight without too many major setbacks or mistakes on my part. It was a harsh grind for me because, to be completely honest, these were my first times ever beating Alatreon. I unfortunately was never able to experience him up until now (which was out of my control since my original save data got corrupted, and that's besidr thr point). But I do feel a sense of satisfaction with how this fight goes now compared to the first few attempts.
    What I'm trying to get at is, is that after playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, playing World for the first time solo, experiencing Rise and Sunbreak, to then come back to World in anticipation of Wilds, I have come to a realization that when it comes to certain fights in Monster Hunter that are rather difficult and are considered "walls": these fights such as Alatreon, AT Velkhana, Fatalis, EX Deviants from GU, and some of the Hazard quests in Rise/Sunbreak are there to truly test your skills and abilities as a hunter in a lot of these cases. And admittedly, these fights do teach you to fight in a careful, effective, and efficient manner to really do these things, but I do think that Iceborne falls short in the aspect of **when** these fights should be given to you to test your limits.
    While it is not entirely impossible to beat Alatreon following the Special Assignments given to you after you beat the main story of Iceborne, it's honestly the fact that you can possibly fight him without facing Yian Garuga, Ruiner, the Metal Raths, or potentially even clear Safi or Kulve before you decide to fight him. And I think this particular decision is partly why many feel so jaded on him: when you gain access to him, you are weighed with a lot of expectations that previous monsters didn't require, at least not nearly as much. I think the only other monster that comes close to these expectations is honestly Behemoth because of how that fight is meant to be treated. I think Alatreon, and therefore AT Velkhana and Fatalis introduce such a steep learning curve on how to beat them swayed many hunters from pushing past them and putting their limits and capabilities to the test.
    GU and Sunbreak have their own difficult quests that those games have to offer, but I think the progression of gettting to those quests that asks a lot from the player is bit smoother, albeit longer in some cases such as Sunbreak with its massive MR requirements. Still, they're set in place in a way that the challenge steadily increases for that by time you reach the hardest fights, you should have developed the skills and expectations to take on these monsters. I just think that Alatreon welcomes unsuspecting hunters too harshly, and it can damage the perspective people can have on him even tho I think his fight can be enjoyable. I'd much rather take him as he is now in Iceborne than what he was like in previous games, personally.

    A couple things I learned while trying to do it myself is that you can actually shut down its elemental power *twice* before it begins the wipe mechanic. Effectively doubling your survivability during the attack. If you're at a max amount of health that you can get, it won't even deal enough damage to kill you in one go.
    The other thing was that if you ever had trouble with breaking the horns, flinch shots can be easy pickings if you can keep an eye on your windows of opportunity.

    I hope the next games don't do bloated damage numbers and maybe even let's us see what portion of our hits is the element we are using in case we have a fight like this.
    then again. if the fight was made that clear, I might not ever get to be challenged in monster hunter again

    This fight is very good and does it's job extremely well. You are right, it does FORCE you to get better at the game. Every other monster excluding Fatalis can be beaten by just taking your time and wearing it down. Even if the hunt takes 20 or 30 or more minutes, as long as you don't use all your lives, and even if you are terrible at the game eventually you will win. Alatreon and Fatalis don't let that happen. Fatalis with his insane damage output and low 30 min timer. And Alatreon with his escaton judgement. They don't let you play passive. If you play passive and scared, or spend the whole hunt getting hit, constantly chugging potions you won't win. You HAVE to learn to play aggressive without getting greedy.
    This goes for pretty much every game, but is extremely prevalent in MH. You have to think of it kind of like red light, green light. When it's red light it's the monsters turn to attack, when it's green light is when it's safe for you to attack. If you keep attacking during red light you aren't gonna have a good time. Every monster has a rhythm of when it's your turn and when it's their turn. It's up to the player to learn that rhythm. That and for Alatreon and Fatalis especially your build matters. If you are really good at the game you can get away with some pretty barebones builds. But only if you are really skilled. You can't just pull up to Alatreon or Fatalis with a shitty build as a regular joe shmo player and think you are gonna beat it. The worse you are at the game, the more having a really strong build matters.
    I've seen plenty of people just give up and blame their failure on the game. That the only reason they can't beat it is because the game is too hard or because the fight is poorly designed. When in reality it's just a skill issue. They shift blame onto the game because it's easier than admitting that they just aren't good at it. And out of frustration they claim it's impossible or only speedrunners can beat it. I watched Asmongold beat this fight playing like a freaking neanderthal. If he can eventually get good enough to do it with his level of skill. I firmly believe anyone can do it.
    Anybody out there that is still struggling to do this. I believe in you. It's not impossible. You CAN do it.

As a hammer main it was nearly impossible to dodge his attacks, so I took a 3 month break, and when I came back I was able to quickly learn his attack patterns and killed him. That’s when I learned how important it can be to use elements against monsters, how to dodge them, what armor to use against them, all that stuff.

    Alatreon is the greatest fight in MH and easily in gaming history. He takes almost everything great about MH combat, pumps it all up to 11, and unlike the other tough fights in MH, doesn't allow you to be a good hunter. He doesn't even allow you to be a great hunter.... he forces you to be the BEST hunter that you could possibly be and the closest you could be to becoming a speedrunner in MH. His Escaton's Judgement forces you to make the ABSOLUTE MOST of every open and doesn't let you rest or hang back like you used to. He makes you rise to the peak of your abilities to beat the DPS check, survive EJ, and win the fight.
    This on top of his moveset which I'd easily argue is THE best moveset of any monster and it's easy to see why he's possibly the greatest fight/boss in the entire game if not franchise❤️‍🔥

    0:52 oh hey that's me 0_0. But I definitely agree(at least on a personal level) that hyper aggressive "making your own openings" is a super fun way to play. That's kinda what drew me to the lance in the first place, how you're always up in a monsters face and turning every attack it makes into one of your own. I don't think it should be mandatory/forced however, as is likely evident from my rant you flashed. I'd prefer it be rewarded/incentivized instead, like with ruiner nerg's spikes and gore magala's frenzy virus.

    • @Avarosa727
      @Avarosa727  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Oh hey lol, nice to see you here. I see what you mean when you say it shouldn’t be forced, but at the same time this play style is heavily encouraged/needed only for the end game bosses, them being Alatreon, AT Vel, and Fatalis. Everything else you can take your time since they’re all 50 min. I think these monsters are designed this way just to offer a difficult challenge in the end game. I think if this style was forced throughout the entire game then that would be an issue, but it’s only for the end game quests. Everyone has their own opinions and what they find fun at the end of the day, I totally see your point as I was stuck on these monsters myself for a while. I enjoy them now since I feel like I improved a lot as a hunter as a result of those quests and gave me something to grind despite being towards the end of the game in terms of content.

    • @analyticHeart
      @analyticHeart 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Avarosa727 That's completely fair yeah. I just wish the needle was moved ever so slightly away from needed/forced into heavily encouraged for those endgame monsters. Like, instead of Alatreon always killing you if you fail the elemental dps check, I'd prefer if he almost always did instead. Even if the chances are low/insanely hard to do, as long as it's still(theoretically) possible to out-skill it and live it'd make the fight so much more interesting, because you're either fighting for your life trying to survive this almost-impossible thing, or you're fighting for your life to avoid this thingy b/c you'd be screwed if it happened. My personal favorite solution was brought up by mhswoocer in his video "How A Forgotten Mechanic "Broke" Monster Hunter." Instead of an insta kill if you fail the dps check, what if instead there was a roided up rage mode. Idk that just sounds so much more fun than "do dps check, fail=dead, success=continue to fight." But other than EJ, Alatreon is genuinely such a good fight. His hitboxes are incredible, telegraphs are right where they need to be, and I love the theme.
      Edit: Idk why but my underlined words got deleted? so no emphasis for me T_T

    I find challenging myself learning a variety of different weapons to be quite enjoyable in Monster Hunter. I've been playing SnS all throughout Monster Hunter Rise until in endgame, but now switching to MHGU which I'm starting from scratch, I've been testing out all kinds of different weapons and just trying them out like CB, IG, and GS for example. This is how I find myself enjoying the game a lot more instead of just clinging on to that single weapon choice throughout the whole game, which there's nothing wrong with doing btw, it's just that I like to expand my knowledge with certain type of weapons and see what weapon works comfortably against a certain monster.

    I had a similar starting experience but the way it happened with me was that I started with Long sword but couldn't pull off counters with any luck as I had no knowledge of monster movements or character timing. I eventually just started hitting the monsters till dead which was a slow process. I moved over to the harder hitting Great Sword and monsters ended up dying without me even trying! Until Odagaron put an end to that. This monster literally danced around me while hitting me with a bleed effect that I had nothing to cure it with. I then went in to the armory to find an Odagaron killer, I was thinking ranged weapons would be best, when I discovered the twins separated at birth: the Charge Blade and the Switch Axe! I was thinking about the CB when I played the SA just in case I didn't like the lack of defense options. But the Switch Axe was everything I wanted in a weapon. Once I performed my first ZSD I knew it was the right weapon for me. Odagaron went down easily as did all other monsters! This is because of the exhaust phial and that became part of my status ailment builds from then on. I specifically aimed to knock monsters down and keep control of the hunt. I finished a whole playthrough with Switch Axe alone and did a 2nd playthrough with Long Sword and a 3rd with Charge Blade. Finding the weapon that's right for me was the beginning of all my successful hunts and it still is. Long live the Switch Axe! (as well as Charge Blade, Long Sword, and Great Sword!)
