Absolutely worth $600+! The machining is way more impressive and intricate than my Springfield 9mm that was $100 less. All joking aside, great video and very helpful reassembly tips :)
Two observations, first, that spring is seriously compressed when closed! Second, and coming from a Halo lover...seeing it apart, it's just not worth the 600+ they go for now :(
Thanks man I opened up my halo VI and I spend 3 days trying to solve the spring problem ... having the parts flying all over the place then your video opened my eyes... just a simple peace of solid wire
Great technique, same one I use except I use a flat piece of stainless steel stiffener from old automotive wiper blades. Allows almost complete closure before removing.
Nice video, wanted to know if the blade of the Halo V eventually will get loose, since the base of the blade is very short and doesn't seem to have enough metal in the base to hold the blade tight?
Microtech has their own screwdriver and bit set available. It's a little pricey at $285 but it has mostly everything you need if you have a Microtech collection
I just emailed you back. My spring is at least two inches longer and the top cup has a steel insert with a rounded end to help keep the spring tracking correctly. Are all black Halo's possessed?!?! Haha!! Next time I take mine apart I'll email you a pic of the insert. It makes it so you can't use a hanger. You have to put a cup flat on a table and compress spring by hand. Still my favorite knife despite it being a Chinese finger removing device!
It's the official Microtech one, they don't sell them often and when they do they are over $120. I think the last time they were sold was at least 6 years ago
Have you ever noticed the Dalton Combat Ranger and the Halo 1 are almost identical. I'd rather have the Dalton Ranger if I'm to pay $600 for this. Good upload!
Without the stop pin there will be no way to charge the blade. Although there may be a way to turn the knife into a ballistic knife; I am certain it is highly illegal. Probably as illegal as converting a Glock into a full auto pistol.
Lol.... I love it when people add in their failed attempts when shooting a video. That way it doesn't make the rest of us feel so incompetent... 🤣. I'm subscribing just for that reason! Good job and keep the videos coming!
True these knives are simple; but they still had to be designed, developed, refined, and manufactured and all that was done in the USA. All that costs a lot of money when you don't hire children at 25 cents a day to operate heavy machinery. To those who want to support American companies while obtaining a quality product with quality materials with quality control then the price is more than justified. The "clones" out there stole the design and use inferior parts that may or may not break. As a toy, the clones will work but as a tool they just won't do.
Aha dude I got the knock off for 50 bucks. Had to take it apart to fix it. The 600 is way too much but material is better. My knock off started getting a lip in the aluminum where one of the stop pins slams against on opening. The lip starting dragging on the knife. Took it apart, and dremeled the lip off. Reassembled and it's all gucci now. Sweet knife to abuse since it wasn't 600 bucks 😂
You forgot to mention buying proprietary fasteners. That in itself is incredibly expensive, and utterly extraneous to function. "Designing?" This thing is less complicated than a toaster. Dafuq you think goes into designing something like this? It's massively marked up. A MT Halo should cost about $120.
Elmax steel for one. Warranty for two. Materials used. Design that went into it. Made in America. Easy to replace. The $600 price tag is justified. It's kind of like saying "Damn that ferrari is too pricey, makes more sense to get a ferrari body kit for my hyundai"
Something I would suggest doing is taking a long piece of heat shrink tubing and covering the piece of coat hanger with it and using heat to shrink it on. The reason is the hanger can scratch parts of the handle if you pull it out too quick. The rubber heat shrink tubing wont do this nor will is flake off into the knife.
It may not slide out easily if you do that. If you do this slowly you won't scratch the parts (at least it didn't for me). The heat shrink tubing is plastic and as you pull the wire out you may find the plastic catch on the edges. A hard plastic rod would likely be ideal.
Previous models have that guide rod in the spring and no holes in the end caps. You CANNOT compress these new springs by hand as you can see at the end of the video. The previous models have weaker springs and CAN be compressed by hand by placing the guide rod in the spring and in an end cap; then compress it until the top cap is placed over the guide rod. You can than insert that piece while the blade is locked closed.
The warranty is voided if the knife is taken apart. Microtech or your dealer may still be able to help with a problem even if the knife was taken apart under certain circumstances. There may be a repair charge for out of warranty knives.
Just saying the reason for the price is the superior materials. Simplicity does not mean cheap. A lot went in this knife and the biggest difference between this and a knockoff is the fact that the official ones can be used as a spike and hammer into something and still work perfectly whereas knockoffs have their locks fail very easily.
Great Video. You actually made it look easy although I am sure its anything but that. That design kinda reminds me of a Pez Candy Dispenser.Whoda thunk Pez candy could be so dangerous? Thanks for uploading this!
You would be surprised. I read somewhere that when springs are formed and manufactured and heat treated properly, they can last for a very long time without losing their spring power. I don't really know why it is, but there's some information online if you're interested, obviously. But eventually yes they will wear out, but it will be a very long time.
The issue is with my halo v is that it is newer so it had a metal pin and the end caps so I cant use this method. Im trying to figure out how I can compress the spring to be able to put the other aluminum handle on without it shooting everywhere any ideas?
Hey Are you willing to sell that Particular Microtech Knife? I’ve been looking for a Halo V for So long with a Red handle and Black Tanto Blade. I’ve searched the internet head and toe and found nothing to the exact one I want. I was wondering if you are interested in selling this one if it’s still available.
Grayfizzle McMaster Carr, assuming you live in North America. You'll have to measure all the attributes of the spring (force rating, wire thickness, overall length, number of coils) but they have a large enough catalogue that you're bound to find it eventually. If you do, post the part # since others might need it too and it would save them some time.
@@TheHollowGrind yeah maybe just a lil but man o man now it shots faster and sounds awosome Cant get over it u really helped me i gave it to my mom to cut some chiken fat becuz she dosint have a sharp knife and all the fat and bones got inside so thanks for posting😉😘 u rescued me
I know I am late to the party here but I just picked up a Halo V and its missing 2 screws. Does anyone know which screws this one takes. I cant find them anywhere.
@@juliocanosa431 they are hard to find and are specific to that model only. I would check to see if anyone made aftermarket screws (sometimes they have titanium) or you may have to find some china screws. You could potentially send it to Microtech but they haven't made them in so long that they may not have screws available. The good thing is that the knife will still function missing 2 screws
@@TheHollowGrind Thank you for such a quick response. Ya I cant find them anywhere. I doubt they have them but I did send them a message. I found one person selling them as tc4 screws but I see those are also for the utx85 and bigger heads.
And I bought mine used from bladeforums so I didn't have anything to loose taking it apart. Too bad I don't collect Gerber knives. Cheap and uncomplicated. Instead I'm out there cutting holes in turf grass with a $600 switchblade.
Got anxiety at the end watching the spring bein installed under tension with the blade in the handle. was like "No don't do that!" when his free finger got near the firing button.
Wanted one of these for years, but not worth the price, at all. At the end of the day, it's a fuckin tool, who is gonna use a several hundred dollar tool when you can get a 5 dollar knife from the gas station to abuse? These are over priced knives for yuppies and nothing more.
I can understand your point, and you'd be correct if the materials used were the same, but high end knives are vastly superior, will retain their value, and are safer to use since they won't break due to poor heat treat and faulty materials
For the price they get for these all your getting is two cast pieces Aluminum and a spring 5to6hundred seem way overpriced for 600. I can get small machine make my own but I still like them
Isn't that the red Microtech model Halo V a limited edition which was used in Sylvester Stallones movie Bullet to the Head? I have one on order but it has the partial serrated blade instead a full strieght edge.

Wish granted.
The end, watching the "How not to do it" - I was like, "SON OF A BITCH!!" I will never take mine apart because of this. Damn.

So since it's spring operated and springs wear out the more it's used, how many times can one uses this before the spring is completely done?

So much simpler than the double action models.
It's a specific Microtech bit tool. Kind of pricey, about $170 from bladehq when in stock.
Simple and beautiful
If you didn't put the stop pin in, would it become a makeshift 'ballistic knife'?
The issue is with my halo v is that it is newer so it had a metal pin and the end caps so I cant use this method. Im trying to figure out how I can compress the spring to be able to put the other aluminum handle on without it shooting everywhere any ideas?
Bravo!
I was expecting a solid internal mechanism, how this knife locks in place when deployed?
M Mon It is a button lock mechanism. The button slides up behind the blade when fully open.
Best blooper reel ever!
