I just started Smalls. They no longer have the shredded version, just smooth and ground. He definitely has a preference for ground. I know this video is from a year ago, but it might be nice to have an updated video? Just a suggestion. I know we should go natural/homemade, but this is convenient. They have less options now. No freeze dried, no kibble.
Great review and channel! I've been buying smalls for about a year now. It's not the only brand my 3 cats eat. Smalls have great quality products, we've tried their fresh, freeze dried and kibble and each of my cats like some of their stuff. The ordering process is a nightmare though. I can't buy what I want to buy, I have to adjust my order to their pre-designed options. I absolutely hate when I put everything I want in the cart and a message pops up saying "add this" and "add that". It's pricey too. I do keep going back because my cats like smalls.
Thank you for your input in the buying process! I'm glad that you are offering variety too. That's super important! Especially when the checkout process is annoying.
What a great channel! So glad I found you! I like the others I found, but you really get into the nitty-gritty of feline nutrition. As I mentioned before, I'm on a quest to find a cat food for my 4 cats that will have as little wasted food as possible, is made from high-quality ingredients & won't bankrupt me. I'm definitely going to try Small's!
thanks for your kind words about my channel! homemade raw meets your desires (: but smalls might be necessary to upgrade from the current food on the way to raw.
@@julieannmyers8714 currently I am buying Fancy Feast Kitten food. I have two cats. Last month I bought 7-24 packs at $20 each. I paid $140 for last months cat food when I only spend $225 a month for myself. I calculated that once I am feeding totally raw, I will be spending just less than $70/month. That is more than half what I spend now and they will be happier and healthier. I also buy them Vital Essentials dehydrated treats for them from Chewy. They go crazy for them at "treat time" and they are healthier for them than the junk food treats (as I call them) that you buy in the store. Also, Jess has been great about answering any questions I have had during this transition.
Seeing your mother’s cats eagerly eat definitely reminded me how spoiled and picky my cat is. With canned food, she’ll lap up any liquid or gravy and generally leave the rest. I’ve got a lot of unopened cans of pate because she won’t touch it. And I definitely accidentally created the “seafood addiction” you’ve mentioned. She seems mostly okay with Orijen dry food and freeze dried treats though. I’ll try that just for cats. She’s probably missing out on a lot with her picky, seafood habit.
Hello! I just got my sample pack coming this weekend. I’m working with my 10 year old cat that has tummy issues with diarrhea when something new is introduced and a little picky. His sister on the other hand and she’s a vacuum. I’m trying to find something that is healthier than canned which is wellness core digestive and Rawz shredded chicken with pumpkin. They don’t mind texture but we’ll see how it goes.
In trying refrigerated cat food awhile back, what I discovered was that they liked it fresh out of the package, but on second serving, not so much. By third serving they were over it. So, my hopes were dashed. I do not remember which brands (2) of refrigerated cat food I tried before, but it was the same result both times. It seems with my cats, that they want variety at every meal, so I put down two options on every plate. I throw away SO much cat food. I try to refrigerate leftovers, but they don't like cold food or old food. Maybe they're just not hungry enough.
This is the reason I haven’t tried fresh food for my cat… with the dog it isn’t an issue but I have trouble getting my cat to finish any can bigger than the 5.5 oz ones… and even those sometimes she puts up a fight about. She wants it FRESH fresh xD and even the smallest fresh cat foods come in pouches that would take her days to finish :/ I have found ONE brand that serves raw in very small containers: Lotus. However it’s incredibly expensive to buy the small containers… idk what the solution is :/
What a great review! I just learned of this company but a Google search. I'm trying to decide if this is something else would be a better alternative to wellness grain free kibble & friskies paté (which I know isn't the best wet cat food, but it's been what I can afford) & the kibble I've always tried to buy a good brand. Years ago I only started giving them wet canned Food as an added supplement to their kibble, because I learned that cats aren't responsible enough to drink enough water (well, one of mine sure isn't) and it started out to be only 1/4 twice a day of canned in addition to their kibble & one of my cats 99% of her food was only kibble, the other cat would only eat wet food, but then my roommate started feeding them 1/2 can without me knowing & my kitty that use to eat 99% kibble I started noticing she was getting fat (she's a small by nature tuxedo kitty). Then I happen to notice the kibble hadn't been going down.... For days! Then I happened to be in the room when he was feeding one day & then it hit me! That's why she's so fat! And, that's why she isn't eating the kibble anymore!! And, for weeks & weeks.... I have been struggling trying to get things back to normal - nothing works! So, I've been having to mix the kibble into the wet food, and I'll tell ya it's kind of a pain in the azz! (I have Two brand new bags, unopened if their kibble as well $40 a bag!! I should make my roommate pay for eh?! See he got them off kilter! P.S. Which do you recommend.... This one or just food for cats? (my 4lb yorkie couldn't stand the just food for Dogs! Tried it 3 different times! ) ~Frustrated! 🥴
I just ordered a sample of Smalls cat food. Firstly, it came frozen which I don't like. Anything that comes frozen when thawed out usually loses some of its taste. It says to thaw it out in a refrigerator for 24 hours, which I did. It says before serving to put it in the microwave for 10 seconds, which I did. It also said to mix it with their regular food as it may take time to get used to. I knew once I saw it was frozen that they would not eat it even when thawed out. Foods lose their taste and smell when frozen. Cats usually smell food before they eat it. Once I opened the package after it was thawed and taken out of the microwave I couldn't even smell anything - and I knew they wouldn't either. My cats will not eat this food for anything.
This is the freshest you'll get until you make cat food yourself. Dry food and canned food are way more processed, rendered, pressurized, sitting in transit, sitting on the shelf... for who knows how long before you actually feed it. I'd never suggest microwave because that will cook the food (even more). I put Jericho's raw food in a warm water bath before serving. Keep it in the container so you don't rinse off nutritional juices. Also most cats do not like new food because they are picky. I have a full transition guide here: th-cam.com/video/tTV0FSxDE-w/w-d-xo.html
Pewter likes "grilled" or "chunks" texture the best, but she will eat a pate or bigger meat pieces if she feels like it. She doesn't like freeze-dried texture, but if she is hungry enough she will eat some Instinct or tripe or heart or treats. I could never get her to eat the minnows, though, unless I crushed them and added them to her canned food. I donated them to a shelter. I want to try a meaty bone, but she is missing several teeth.
Do you think this is the best raw food for cats? Trying to find a good wet food bc my cat eats too fast dry food and keep throwing it up bc she doesn’t chew :/ and my other cat has a unitary tract issue too
My cat is picky about a smooth consistency in her wet food. I try to make it not as smooth, but then she won’t eat as much. Also, any tips for trying to get a cat to eat freeze dried minnows?
Rox likes food. Any really. Sky prefers everything to be as wet and mushy as possible (yes regardless of eating kibble for ~8 years). Soon they will be getting their first bit of raw meat shared from the chicken we will have tomorrow ☺️ very excited to see how they will like it.
Right now I am still feeding my 1 year old cats Fancy Feast Kitten (I know what you are going to say...lol) but , as you know, I am currently switching switching over to raw. Jess I sent you an email a couple of days ago. Did you see it? Should I resend it?
What’s the deal with having to switch food really slowly? In the wild don’t they eat a variety of animals which doesn’t make them sick? Just wondering if it has more to do with them being used to canned/dry food which makes them more prone to digestive issues as they’re all full of unhealthy harmful ingredients (which 99% of cats eat)? I switched my cats from freeze dried to frozen raw and a variety of brands and meats, back and forth multiple times and abruptly, with no issues! So does switching between even raw foods too fast will typically create issues and my cats are just atypical?
I must also note that before I switched to raw they had diarrhea out of nowhere for well over a month , had been on wet food since birth, couldn’t figure out why, tried different brands. Immediately after raw - PERFECT POOPS on day 2. So it’s not like they have strong stomachs to begin with!
I always suggest a slow transition because cats in general are sensitive and picky about changes. but every cat is an individual (: I’d rather over estimate the slowness than under estimate.
quickly looking now and I like their transparency on nutritional analysis. I will add it to my list to review! but please be patient with me it might not be for a few months (:
Homemade is certainly the best because you control the ingredients and how it's made (and therefore the cost). I have a full guide on homemade cat food here: th-cam.com/video/2uM6smRI3A8/w-d-xo.html&t.
I go crazy when I see these mush foods being pushed for all the wrong reasons. Cats need to chew. Maybe when they are 90 and toothless mush would be ok. Feed your cats food that is solid , non processed, no fillers, no colours, no crap. Just a healthy canned cat food. They are out there. Imagine how your mental health would be if you sat down each day and chewed mush. You would have poor digestion and poor mental health. Do not buy this crap, my opinion. If there was no GRAVY on these foods, the cats would never eat them.
I was going crazy trying to find ANYTHING they would eat. Even gravy wasn't always helping. Thankfully, they like some of this, BUT, they puke if they eat too much.
@@NdnUrbanCat I just fed my two cats. I have one that is on the chubby side and I have to get her wait down, only a 2 years old. Cats need to chew , just like we do. Its not only important for digestion but also for their mental health. I also will add every second day a few slices of carrots, peas and broccoli. The only thing that is missing is my cats mental health and I have to work on that , they need, need, need to be stimulated. So I am in Canada and as it warms up, I am going to put some kind of tree thing in there for them to climb and explore. I have to do something, good luck….
