    Just a suggestion regarding water issues in the winter. Using a container of your choosing, I use a 25 watt aquarium heater set to any temp, and just chuck it. In doesn't cost much for electricity, and pretty inexpensive to purchase

    I put some tarp on several sides for wind brakes for my quail and a solid plastic floor on part of the floor which I take out and scrape clean .
    I put wood chips in the sealed area with sand trays .
    This year I had a quail sit on and hatch her own eggs 😃(I didn’t think they could do due to it been breed out of them ?) any way only one female (baby) survived due to a few issues with the enclosure and I’m hopeful that she learned from her mother and will hatch her own 🤞🏼

    I love that you have a surf board on your hoodie while you are out in the snow busting up ice! 🤣

    Just an idea.... If you had 2 of those bath tubs, and a place to to store one where it's warmer, you could simply rotate them. I keep the frozen one in a plastic tote, with a lid (no smell in my house) until it's time to swap again.

    They could use a good layer of straw in there. Wire flooring is also feel their wee feet. They will be cold.

    I would love to have quail! Years ago I knew a Philipeno family & he raised quail & collected their eggs for pickling. The 1st time I ever tasted pickled eggs & they were soooo good!

    Have you looked at the playlist of Living Traditions? They cover so many different aspects of the Quail. I think you dont have them anymore, but.....take a look. :)

    I converted a really cheap quail feed container ( that has about 10 feed holes in a circle with a mason jar attached to it) to a no waste system by inserting a yogurt cup that I cut the bottom off and melted 10 small blueberry sized holes and placed it upside down in the neck of the feeder. Just to check if there was any food being tossed I placed a black bucket lid in the cage with the feeder on the lid. To my surprise there was nothing wasted at all. You need to try this. It's easy and anyone can do it. I also use extra tall water bottles from the grocery store placed in a slightly larger container that I placed a hole high enough the birds can't poop or dust up into the water. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

    I have to go out to my quail cages a couple times a day in the summer too, because they like to splash around in the water and it gets dirty, but its so cute its worth it!

    New subscriber here! So glad I found you! I've really been enjoying your videos! Not sure if this would work for you, Kevin @ Living Traditions Homestead has a video on how he made feeders for his quail with a small Rubbermaid tote and PVC pipe that makes it so there's almost no food waste.

    Good video. I gave my hens supplemental heat last year, but none this year. @4:00, you’re getting eggs? Mine quit laying a while ago. 🙂 They’re old though.

    I’ve heard that adding molasses to the water will help if from freezing. I know they do it for chickens, but not sure if it’s okay and safe for quail.

    Would a series of electric heating pads (covered in plastic to protect from liquids, encased in wire to keep them from pecking at it) be of use in their coop (maybe along a wall, near the celing or under the watering jug)? Or maybe run warmwater through pex tubing like a heated floor to prevent freezing.

    I eat frozen eggs from my chickens and there is no difference. They taste the same

    No one ever covers this but, how do you winterize for quail that are by themselves? I have all the hens in one and the roosters separated in their own individual cages.

      From what I have heard, not sure if it is true, in the wintertime, unless it is heated, you let all the quail live in the same area and wait for warmer weather, before separating them. Just an idea.

    They don't fly out when you turn your back? I don't know anything about Qual.
    My chickens haven't layed in months.

      They normally don’t fly out if I’m standing in front of the coop. My quail are going through spurts as far as laying eggs for me.

  • @mister-action1
    @mister-action1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do they have nesting boxes

    • @MakeitMake
      @MakeitMake  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. They almost always lay eggs in their dust bath. 😊
