So true! Puppies are like toddlers, they need a lot of 👀👀 attention. Henry the smol is adorable and Milton sleeping in your lap so comfy. My cav had chewing problems too, she liked to chew the baseboards corners and we used bitter spray to discourage her. Just like Herky she ❤️ papers, tissues and my daughter’s homework! 😆😱
I’m glad they did their research and not just “awwww it’s soooo cute”. “Oops we have to move”. “Here take him”. They actually cared! I met so many ppl who never did research be4 getting a pet so I’m glad
Hamilton also went through a massive surgery at 4.5 months after fracturing his knee and this was only a few days after his allergy attack. I’m so glad Henry is doing great!
Herky The Cavalier he jumped and fractured his knee and the growth plate in the knee. The surgery was to put 4 pins in the knee to secure it. It was just awful for 2 weeks. He had diarrhea from the pain meds and he couldn’t walk so we had to take him out to potty every 2 hrs for the first week. You can see some pictures on @cavalier_hamilton
When my cavalier was 8 or 9 mths old it was Fall season & I placed small gourds (small orange & green & yellow squash vegetables) on the floor in a corner as Fall decor & one day I came home & noticed one was gone. I couldn't find it anywhere. The next day Charlie's poop was full of gourd seeds!!! I discovered where the gourd disappeared to. (Gourds are very hard & he actually ate every bite of it, nothing remained on the floor!)
Want to say a big thanks to you both, and your fab dogs for never failing to put a smile on my face! I'm having an operation on Monday and, when I've recovered, I'm having my first ever dog.. The most challenging thing for most is waking up in the middle of the night for *potty breaks* and a very early *'alarm'* from puppy cries, scratching, howling, etc 😑 It's hard, challenging but *WE WILL* miss all of these moments later on..... right ?
I crate my Japanese Chin pups and when I use the bathroom at night, so does she, on a pee pad. Both my dogs are trained on pee pads, but will always go outside too.
Very true! In my opinion once potty training is complete it feels much easier! One of my pups took much longer to curb chewing as well which was quite challenging! Dogs are so unique as individuals but it is so worth it!
Places of work should offer a few weeks of "pupternity" leave lol - kidding but not kidding. Some people only want to have fur babies (me) and that first month or two are so crucial!
Also, I shopped around for insurance and we went with healthy paws instead of trupanion because of annual deductible instead of per condition limits. I think this is purely a personal preference. Other things were very similar (no limit, similar monthly payments) but we have to pay the cost upfront and get reimbursed. The reimbursements are very quick (2-3 days).
Having owned an American cocker spaniel previously and seeing how he handled his first car ride as a puppy (he learned to love it), I don't think I could put a puppy, any puppy through a long plane or car ride home. I'd want to get a local puppy. I want to keep everything happy, calm and relaxed. Everything should be as good an experience as possible. I have very mild Arnold Chiari Malformation, so at least I have a sense of what potentially a Cavalier would be going through with the neurological stuff. But a long plane ride all by his/herself in a cage? Not for my little Cav.
this is why Imi rather get a puppy while im not working just so i can make sure it gets properly trained and the proper attention i see as being similar to when you have a baby and need to stay with it for a few weeks. i grew up in a family that always has a dog my first puppy was a pug when i was a year old and we bred her with our male i think twice so we dealt with puppies then and right before my 11th birthday my sister went out and got a boxer pitbull mix without our parents knowing my mom was fine with it but the next day my dad found her and we basically cried our eyes out to let us keep her which obviously now 11 years later would not work on him with me being 22 and my sister being 30 so obviously that wouldn’t work on my dad now but i do want my own dog to actually care for my own dog who actually wants to be near me because our boxer pitbull is more attached to my mom and my sister has her rescue pomchi. i been saving up some money from when i was working and i’m also dog sitting so i’m saving up to get a cavalier.
