You're ABSOLUTELY correct. I'm a hairstylist certified with both Deva curl dry cutting and Ouidad wet cutting. I was cutting wet first and after being trained in dry cutting I found it produced inaccurate results because shrinkage is different all the time. Then after diffusing I would still have to go back and clean up the cut. I love the signature shape of the Deva cut, but I achieve it wet cutting with superior finishing. Thanks for being so honest about this. I hope many other people will pay attention.

@@jml4031 We add products to our hair to style them everyday. When the products which seal in the moisture are applied evenly saturated, then the evaporation or dryness should be pretty consistent. When the hair is wet it resembles the state of the hair after products are applied. At least that is my experience.

This is why I cut my hair at home. I don’t trust anyone anymore to touch my hair.
I had one stylist for years growing up she was perfect and knew what she was doing. Then she moved sadly too far out of the way almost out of state. So I tried other people. ONLY THREE AND THEY ALL FUCKED MY HAIR UP. Never again.

I’m a licensed cosmetologist teacher and curly girl. I taught foundational and advanced haircuts. I love cutting both wet and dry. Cutting principals are the same no matter your curl pattern. Wet cuts are best for precision, in my professional opinion however dry cutting is best for shaping and finishing. I believe after years of teaching and salon experience…most guests benefit from both. Typically wet first then dry but I’ve done dry and then wet and style. I select based on clients preference and what’s best for their hair curl pattern. Great insight. For those asking how to find a stylist you can trust. Honestly, it takes time but you can request to do a consultation to meet the stylist review their lookbook, website and ask questions.

I couldnt agree more. If its a major cut change the basic shape should be wet to acheive balance then finished and adjusted when diffused and dry

as a black girl with 4c natural hair, I think both suck, regardless of what you learned in school.
Type 4 long hair should be cut stretched ( I don't care which way, as long as the stretch is thorough. )
Cutting / trimming my hair wet will lead to taking too much off as well as an uneven cut (because shrinkage) cutting it dry, but unstretched will have the same effect.
The only exception is for someone who wants a proper big chop in which case it should be cut dry and combed out for some kind of minimalist stretch.

I've also had the dreadful experience of having my curls cut by a stylist who I thought knew what she was doing. I asked for a trim and a little shaping. From my understanding, that wouldn't require me having to sacrifice a lot of my hair. I was so excited. Sadly, I noticed how long it was taking her to cut. I saw longer than expected coils dropping on the floor, but... I just wanted her to do her thing. I immediately regretted the cut as soon as I saw the amount of hair on the floor when I got up. I noticed later on that one side was longer than the other. I sat in the chair with waist length hair and walked out with botched hair, about mid back length. That was my final straw. I had to cut my hair the following week. Omg. It was so bad. Never again. So, I recently learned about wet cutting and did it myself. I absolutely love it! Great video. Thanks for sharing.

i couldnt agree more with your point about how dry cuts look "good" when you first walk out of the salon but are truly uneven when you wash and style it yourself. i went to the same salon for a couple years but had to work with a different stylist the last time i went. i normally always ask for them to cut my hair while wet but this stylist insisted on cutting while dry so i gave it a shot. i have a round face and have bangs and side bangs to slim my face a bit. i told the stylist that i normally get the hair in front of my ears cut to my chin and my bangs at the tearduct so that when they are dry and bounce up they are at the perfect length. i didnt realize it until after i went home and washed my hair but she didnt even cut my side bangs. they were still passed my collarbone. all she did was give them layers which is what i didnt want!! she also cut so much of my overall length off that it felt like i made no progress growing my hair out these past two years (and my hair grows fast). so i ended up having to cut my side bangs myself and i can tell you now i did a terrible job. ive since moved states and am currently trying to find a new curly hair stylist but it really is difficult avoiding those that only do dry cuts or want $200+

I'm really sorry to hear about your Diva cut experience. It sucks when someone meeses up your crown and derails or wrecks your hair goals. I was going to get a divacut 2 years ago, but after looking at different videos of girls getting there hair done, and also seeing the different "levels" of training that their system gave stylists to work on your hair, I decided against it. It didn't look all that sound. I decided to go to Mona Balthazar from The Mona Cut instead. Everything that you described for your pros of getting a wet cut was provided by Mona and Steven who do dry cutting. The education that I received on my hair was amazing. However, I also paid more than $150 to get my hair done there. The experience and education of the person that you are going to is the key. That being said, sometimes it doesn't matter how much research you put into who you let touch your hair and they still wrecked it, but it is the most crucial of initial steps before sitting in someone's chair.

Thank you for clarifying this!! I had my hair cut wet 9 years ago and my curl pattern was on point, but then the next few times it’s been cut since then, it was cut dry. I intially liked them at first, but the pattern never held. And the breakage? Not worth it. It’s waist length now and needs a cut, wet it the way to go. I love the shape of your hair and it’s exactly what I want to achieve. Should I ask for a trim, or a specific cut? Thank you so much and God bless you! 🙏🏽

My hair is so uneven and I have seriously thought about going to school to show others what we (women with curly hair) need from a stylist. I totally agree that when you get a dry cut, it’s not a true representation of how our hair looks after we wash it. So frustrating. I got my haircut in June and am having to fix it myself (by watching you tube videos) and just waiting for it to grow out again. Thank you!

But when she styled my hair it was up to my shoulders, I was confused like huhh. Also the dry cutting left the bottom of my hair frizzy / split ends. Amazing video. Empowering and helpful tips. Thank you. I'm going to ACTUALLY trim my own hair from now on. 😂 It surely cannot be as much of a miss as my experience today with a stylist who, in a country not too familiar with very naturally curly hair, surely didn't think anything different was required for my "trim" before he hacked off nearly half after a very rough and heavy wash and shampoo. I thought to say something, to bring my own shampoo but you know "let him do this thing". No. NO. Nooooo. At least I can take better care of my ends now that they're basically touching my scalp 🥲 and grow it all out without tangles... by this time next year. 💀 I'll give him some tips, maybe he'll do the research before the next person with hair like mine comes... but I won't be sitting in his hair again for at least another 12-18 months.

I came to see what's all the hype for a $150+ cut that has never looked appealing to me is all about. Just as I suspected, it's not worth it. I just get mine layered, either in it's natural state or straighted and always got results that looked 100x better than the deva cut. Also with a layered cut I can wear my hair natural or straight (the straightened deva cut looks a hot mess). Thanks for your honest opinion on this trade marked cut. Great vlog!

ALSO, it's up to us to do research. Deva stylists have 3 different levels of training but they're all just lableled "Deva certified". Make sure you find someone that's level 3, and has some years under their belt. My stylist is a level 3, has been cutting for 20yrs,10 of those Deva certified. Most stylists only do the wk long training so that they can call themselves Deva certified!

I think it depends on the length and thickness of the hair. I am a stylist, I have had to flat iron tight coils then cut. Then depending on clients preferred style, you shape and define when dry to refine the look.

I've found with wet cuts that they don't treat the different curl patterns as different, because I have everything from 2c to 3b, so I end up with huge steps that take forever to even out. But at the same time, I don't feel like the dry cuts I've gotten were as thorough as they should have been. There has to be a middle ground somewhere!

I wish I watched this video a month ago! I was going to my first concert, Alicia Keys, was so excited but felt like I needed a trim since I hadn’t got one since January this year. My girl I always go to couldn’t get me in soon enough and I wanted to feel as cute as possible before the concert. I decided to go to this other girl who worked at the salon my girl used to work at, who also has curly hair. She gets me in the morning of the concert. I show her a video I have from TH-cam (3 minute wet curly cut, step by step, that works for my hair). She briefly looks at the video and says “don’t you have anything faster? I’m dry cutting your hair anyways” mind you I’m shy and have trouble even going to salons from bad hair ptsd lol ! It completely took me off guard and I felt so nervous, but I felt bad she rushed to get me in and I felt like I should trust her. She told me she was taking just an inch off and a little bit of shaping. She poofs out my hair and in 20 minutes she completely hacked my hair. My hair looked literally butchered. I go home, wash my hair again, try to style it multiple times and nothing was working, my hair was undeniably f’d up and in shock, my curls were so frizzy and on top of all of it, I lost several inches of my hair and had a very rounded cut that didn’t flatter me at allllll. I cried for hours before the concert and had to wear my hair in a low ponytail :( i ended up a week later going to my girl and getting it fixed. she literally only has me and another girl as curly clients and she always thoroughly watches the video and gets my hair right every time, since the first time I went to her. I regret even getting my hair done bc I could’ve waited. Anyways, I messaged that girl with pictures of my hair prior to getting fixed and she tells me how she was completely uncomfortable following a TH-cam video that is going to look different on every head and refunds me only half my money. In total I spent 200 on a cut which I’m genuinely sad about after years of growing out my curls that were healthy and voluminous, and sad that she didn’t communicate that while I was in the chair so I could’ve at least gave her some money for her time and apologize that I wouldn’t be comfortable with a dry cut either. I definitely think wet cutting works best for me and my hair type and curl patterns, but definitely each method isn’t a one shoe fits all!

My hair is very curly underneath and not as curly on top, dry cutting has helped my hair not look shorter underneath....as a stylist I do a full.consultation, and an extremely thorough haircut dry, and if wet needed as well. I have the client come in washed and how they style their most of the time. Diffused or air dried whichever they do the most. I'll do a 10 to 20.munute consultation, cut dry, wash, style how they wear it most of the time either dried under dryer( less volume and shrinkage) or diffused 100% then go back through my haircut. I don't cut any currier than a 3c. I am not confident enough and will turn them to someone else because I know how important a good haircut is.

Yeah, the front of my hair is the curliest, and I do NOT like dry cuts, so this past 2 cuts I basically straighten it with a blow dryer to cut it. I tell my stylist to keep the front an inch or two longer than the back, because it ends up being the correct length when styled. I know this way 90% of my accessible ends are getting a proper trim, unlike a dry curly cut where I end up big chopping afterwards because the ends get bad SO fast and the bottom layer is always scraggly with tons of fairy knots. Don't get that when I cut it wet or dry and straight.

I then got my hair cut wet and it was a good cut. I still prefer my cut on straight hair. I've had deva cuts/curly cuts from other stylist that have been really good cuts. But the cuts i didn't care for was the rezo cut and cut it kinky cut.
I think it all depends on stylist, their skill level, and education when it comes to cutting hair that is curly/kinky

I agree. Got a deva cut and hated it. It was the worst.

The problem is, NO ONE has put the time in to accommodate our hair, including some Black hair stylist. No matter who I choose, I have to teach that person how section my hair before applying color, how to rinse my hair, how to detangle my hair, and how to style my hair. When rinsing, she just ran the water over the top. It never reached my scalp. I'm going to have to teach her how to get under the curls with the sprayer. It just requires the utmost patience and it's exhausting to me. If I could apply permanent color to my own gray hair, I would NEVER go to a salon. It's sad to not have a place to go for good hair care.

The biggest problem is finding the hairstyles that can cut curly or wavy hair. Most only have experience trimming straight hair and cutting a different style is impossible for them even if they have been in the business for years.

If u have more than one type of curl pattern getting a dry cut doesn’t consider how those different curl patterns will look dry. If u wear ur natural hair stretched or straight getting a wet cut isn’t beneficial bc when it dries the shape won’t be the same based on ur curl patter.
It sounds as if the Deva stylist needed more training. I don’t think it’s fair to judge all Deva stylist based on ur exp. I’ve had many bad stylists when I was relaxed and now that I’m not. It’s the luck of the draw when u select someone u don’t know

Tell a cosmetology salon hair cutter to keep your wavy/curly hair length and they end up cutting off too much, and wanting body on top, never enough is done. And sometimes too much on bottom sides get made thinner instead of full big hair desired all the way around, not round balloon!

It is not “only hair.” People spend years taking immaculate care and growing their hair. It’s cultural for alot of people. Very ignorant comment
