Great video, very helpful. I did this on my 2002 Camry. When I loosened the nut that you need to remove the wheel well cover for, the whole stud came out. No big deal, it just meant that I only had one stud as a guide when I put the pan back on. The most difficult bolt to remove was the one next to it (going towards the rear of the car). I couldn't get a wrench or the socket in there. I ended up using a 1/4" drive socket. It was small enough to fit, but very slow going. Also I used carburetor cleaner to help clean up the sealing surface as well as the bottom of the pan. Great advice to practice reinstalling the pan a few times before you put the sealant on. The pan would Although it was unobstructed, I did need to rotate it a little to remove it freely. Getting the pan off was a bit difficult. The rubber mallet did not work for me. I did have to use a small screwdriver and tap lightly with a hammer. Be very careful doing this for fear of damaging the mating surface. I then used a very thin putty knife to help pry and pan came off easily. There may be aftermarket gaskets around but the sealant is what Toyota originally used and that's I went with also. Use enough to ensure a good seal. I used almost half the tube.

I'm in the middle of a 2003 Camry oil pan now. Car is on jackstands overnight, since I ran out of daylight.
My question, to anyone who may know the answer, is should I use an actual gasket?
It's my mom's car, the dealership pointed out the leak to her so I offered to replace the gasket. I just went to Bennett Auto Supply to buy a Haynes repair manual and the needed gasket, which came with a tube of sealant also.
Only now, 3 hours after i paused the project, did I realize there was never a gasket in there to begin with-- just a silicone sealant or whatever. I've cleaned all of it off the pan and engine, already.
So, should i be using an actual gasket with sealant?
Also, have I already screwed up by leaving the pan off overnight???
Thanks in advance to anyone with advice.
PS. This guy is exactly right about that single nut. It's on the upper right of the pan, when you slide under the car (looking up to the "sky," obviously) from the front end, head-first. I got my ratchet on the nut but it took a LOT of small turns to get it loose for me to finish turning it with my fingerTIPS. I almost thought I was going to have to stop, give up or go buy an angled socket or attachment. I have slim hands and the car's engine was cool, though.
    Thanks for the video.

At 1:08, I heard you say it. Not trying to argue but I bought a gasket that fits this oil pan- 14 nuts & bolts, total.
At first, i got a cork-like gasket that had no 90° angles so i exchanged it for this black gasket i have now. It certainly fits. I've just never done this specific job (sealing with a gasket and/or sealant) and left pan off overnight.

You will need a swivel for one of these two oil pan guide nuts and then you can use the ratchet for the rest and make sure to remove your oil dipstick so it wouldn’t get bent or hit while removing the oil pan

Buy the correct tap and a tap handle( not a ratchet and socket and especially nor a screw gun, impact, drill or anything electric or pnuematic... A simple tap handle... And carefully turn it a quarter turn with enough wrist pressure to get it to turn ( dont torque on it) and then back it out and clean out the threads with air... Rinse and repeat until you have traced straightened cleaned or sightly recut the marred threads. Btw NO good mechanic would ever misthread a bolt so bad that the threads would be so damaged that tgey could not run a tap through and clean them up and restore them to a useable condition. And if they did they were hastily using one of the donts I listed above. There is plenty of warning that a bolt is misthreaded. No honest mechanic should they damage a clients vehicle by destroying threads should fix them at no cost. That is an embarrassing mistake amongst professionals and is way more easily avoided than repaired. Stripped threads, broken bolts and the awfully dreaded broken tap can be a nightmare. Unless I am mistaken, which definitely could be the case as i have wrenched on very few cars. I am a retired production leadman for westinghouse's locomotive manufacturing company MotivePower Inc. and prior to that a test mechanic for many years with idk how many rebuilds and 200 new high speed diesel commuter, freighter, and switcher locomotives under my belt. After you break a couple and have to repair them you dont break anymore. Just my best educated guess and humble opinion but i agree that the shop should be held responsible for the damages and on good faith, if they care about their reputation at all, do whatever necessary to remedy their mistake as painlessly as possible.

I don't believe this job should take more than 15 20 min tops and the price to get this done is between 14 and 15 hundred dollars. What kind crap is that that the shop feels their needing more to replace an oil pan gasket than a head gasket. Ridiculously over charging people and I'm not seeing any justification for them to gouge anyone like this. Needs to be re-evaluated and then tell me the price again. If it doesn't change then I'll no longer feel comfortable with the shop being fair ever again.

My dipstick broke off today must be floatin around in the oil pan..could this harm my engine? 05 camry

I doubt it, there should be a magnet at the bottom of your oil pan, and also the dipstick is too big it'll just sink to the bottom of the oil pan, next time you change your oil fish it out tho

I did this last week but I made a mistake, I was working on another part of the engine and I had to remove the engine mount and the engine with sump rested on the subframe while the gasket was still drying now it has a slight leak 😰.

So I gotta ask with 200k miles....when do you finally replace the car and why

tommy d u b b s Personally I’ll replace the car when I don’t think it’s worth spending the money on a repair which usually involves the engine or transmission. But then again, it might be worth having a new engine or transmission put in the vehicle. I guess everybody’s situation is different based on their finances. I will tell you I’ve always believed that buying a used car and maintaining it as long as possible is the most financial prudent thing to do if your on a budget.
