Such cool dudes. I envy your comradery, affinity with music, and open mindedness. Keep it up, it's super inspiring (also appreciate the humorous moments that happen now and then!)!
Man, I forgot how much I love the second half of The Promised Consort! For, uh, some strange reason, I'm MUCH more familiar with the first 30 or so seconds of the song than I am with the rest of it. >_>
I really didn't mind that were less music, the discussion where really good! And I didn't knew both of them have worked together! Oh, and the outro was def something! 😂😂😂
Perfect piece fitting of a finale. Great storytelling, I adore the implications of Miquella's story progressing and his emotions changing as the music plays. Like Miquella singing a gentle lullaby to heal the broken pieces of the world, turning into powerful and overwhelming order, then into a desperate plea. Not to mention the heroic, celebratory and regal style of Radahn's part. Fantastic piece.
I was thinking about the whole "context" discussion the other week since it's something you bring up quite a lot in your videos, and I think the place I came to with it was: "Do you miss out on something listening to music without context? Yes.... Does that invalidate or even lessen your enjoyment of the piece? No." Because at the end of the day, we all miss out on a lot of things that others pick up on as we are all different unique individuals. The person who isn't a chef may not know what ingredients went into a dish and may not know if it is French or English cooking but they do know it's delicious. For me, I've studied Japanese for over a decade now so there are games (mostly from Japan obviously) where there are references or nuances in the Japanese language that get totally lost in translation and a part of me wants to shout out "IT'S BECAUSE OF ____!" when I see people talk about weird Japanese game trends... but that doesn't change the fact that the people playing without that knowledge still love the game and sometimes notice things I don't notice because they aren't distracted by the context... and to counter that there's plenty I miss because studying over a decade doesn't come close to the knowledge and experience you gain from growing up in that context. In the end, we all come from different paths with different levels of experience and knowledge that shapes our perspective of how we view the world (music included) and no two people will view the same thing exactly the same way.... but those differences and things we and others "miss out on" doesn't devalue our experience... in a sense it's part of what adds value to it. Much like how a recipe needs various ingredients working in unison towards a recipe, a piece of art needs multiple colours and textures working towards a great picture, and music needs multiple scales and notes to work towards a single piece, I think it's these variations between us and our experiences that truly adds beauty and purpose to our discussions about art. There is no "Right way" to experience art or "Optimal strategy" to get value out of it in my opinion =) Sorry for the long ramble. Keep up the great videos!
Always interesting to hear the perspectives from the other side of music. Two things id like to comment, first I wish game companies released versions of songs without loop, they would sound more complete to non player listeners. Second, finally someone gave Gravity Rush some love, both games have lovely songs.
Hot damn, 2 of my favorite guests come together. Was just hoping for another video from Mr (Dr?) Wanamaker last night. This is awesome man, thanks for doing this once again
I sort of REALLY hoped when Mr. Wanamaker started asking about what was happening [visually] during the battle in "The Promised Consort" that you would have shown him the gameplay...! Normally I enjoy when they give insight with no visual context but I think it really would have given him a little more of an idea to the beauty of why Soulsborne music is the way it is. Ok back to the video!
Am I the only one that thinks Garth and Greg's piece would fit right into Final Fantasy? I can imagine the characters dancing around in a festival while a bright tailed comet passes over head.
Nice tracks btw! Next time I think we should spice it up though. Hmmm…. Oh! How about we reference the ETERNAL PROMISED CONSORT, RADAHN. MALENIA, BLADE OF MIQUELLA. THE FINAL BATTLE. Maybe throw in some destiny ones too like RHULK, THE FIRST DISCIPLE. This is sarcasm but it would be really cool to see their reactions 😭
I believe you get your music for these videos from youtube right? I would be a bit careful when choosing like this because often times the channels uploading the tracks don't properly inform you when they have edited long loops into the music, and can give the wrong impression when out of context. In particular Vendecentre, looking at the track in the official soundtrack on spotify, it's only really two minutes long, but I have the impression the track you've shown in the video was edited to be much longer. So it probably wasn't intended to be looping this many times when listening out of the game's context.
Garth so reminds me of an English professor I had back in college, in the best possible way. He was a pretty awesome guy, he would be critical of what you did, but he was pretty friendly. He kind of wrote the book on literature... quite literally. We actually used his book for our class. Now that is one way to get book sales!
Listening to their piece was a nice addition into the video. I went through enough classical music classes to get a minor degree, but even to this day I don't go out of my way to really listen to these performances. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy them, however. In context of relating to video game music, I could easily close my eyes and imagine a bustling street festival in your classic RPG with this playing in the background. Very fun movement.
24:42 Amazing, he ripped the thoughts and imagery right out of my head. Because I was just listening to the music, my mind immediately conjured up Belle walking through that village. How the bloody hell did he know? Edit: I do wonder how Garth and Greg would have reacted to the Promised Consort if they had heard Starscourge Radahn before or after. Because I remember during the ranking of ER’s music that you re listened to both and decided that Starscourge Radahn was above The Promised Consort as a track. Would Garth and Greg have thought the same thing perhaps? 46:51 When I was in the boss fight myself for the first time, I will be genuinely honest. I barely noticed the start of the second phase. I was way too busy fearing for my life. Subsequent runs I could hear it, but didn’t think it out of place knowing exactly who I was fighting. It enhanced the atmosphere significantly in my opinion. Still below Starscourge Radahn in my opinion, but that was a completely different kettle of fish. 1:23:33 reminds me slightly of The Weight of the World with how he described that
I see that ''The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices'' or in French ''Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares'' has been mentioned. I'd like to add that the song from The Witcher 3 - ''Steel For Humans'' is in fact Bulgarian in origin, it is a song about Lazarus. So that gentleman has a good ear since The Witcher 3 composer uses Bulgarian motifs in some of the music for the game.
I am almost a little surprised I didn't mind this being more heavy on the discussion. Garth and Gregory are great guest on their own and have a wonderful chemistry with each other and you.
Interestingly enough the promised consort has a grab attack where he kindly embraces you it does no physical damage but it does put half of a crown on your head and if he does this twice you get on your knees and pledge yourself to him and it will say heart stolen
I think something that needs to be added, when you present The Promised Consort, is how broken the world is. The lands between, and the lands of shadow by extension, are a broken world. They're a place of conflict, of struggle between great powers, of tragedy, of wonder, of horror, of greatness and of depravity. And the music reflects it, from the funeral march of Starscourge Radahn's theme, the cosmic wonder of Astel's, the ambition of Radagon's and then the nostalgia of Elden Beast's. The music is varied, but like the world it lives in, it does not have any true heroic figure (theme). And that's why, in my opinion, that Promised Consort's theme (especially the second half) is liked so much by those who played the game. Because for the first time, maybe for the entire soulsborne series, the music doesn't just tell a tale of conflict; but one of heroic triumph, of hope.
Bro you should have them react to one winged angel or zero it would be cool to see what such experienced people like them share there thoughts on song's like those
Listening to Laude reminded me of the game Kingdom Come Deliverance, which has a great OST. You should also give the Saint Barbara Theme for the upcoming KCD 2 a listen.
A more effective summation of Radhan the Promised Consort, is that you are introduced to a Demi-God of War, and then the ascension of a True God of love and Hope, and you oppose this duo, impossibly so.
I wonder if people that don't known much about video game music would be able to enjoy something like video game Orchestra. We'll at certain level yes but how much?
We chatted quite a bit more than usual in this episode, also less vgm, and one of their pieces: I hope you find value in the conversation!
The name of the chapter in the video is Galaxy rush, but the name of the game is Gravity rush
The perfect episode
Such cool dudes. I envy your comradery, affinity with music, and open mindedness. Keep it up, it's super inspiring (also appreciate the humorous moments that happen now and then!)!
Hadn't actually finished the video here but Laude was awesome too, damn
Man, I forgot how much I love the second half of The Promised Consort! For, uh, some strange reason, I'm MUCH more familiar with the first 30 or so seconds of the song than I am with the rest of it. >_>
i want miquella to step on me
Strange yeah, wonder why 🤔
Wow that's so odd...
I really didn't mind that were less music, the discussion where really good! And I didn't knew both of them have worked together!
Oh, and the outro was def something! 😂😂😂
Why do I see Marco in all 3 stages of life when they are together?
I don't care how many times Promised Consort Radahn themes appears, ITS NEVER ENOUGH for this great ost🔥🔥
Perfect piece fitting of a finale. Great storytelling, I adore the implications of Miquella's story progressing and his emotions changing as the music plays. Yes but i more dlc ost is always aprecciated

That complete serious face "I agree except that I wasnt in Vienna last week?" was just perfect XD
Adagio for strings was also used by Tiesto in an electronic cover. One of my favorites

"Lalalay" from Sword of Destiny are so nostalgic to me

Absolutely love this aspect of your channel, and these types of videos are the absolute best you do. Keep up the great videos Marco!
That was a blast to listen to. Great guests with interesting insights and fair bit of laughs, thanks for the video, chief

I have no qualms with The Promised Consort being reused for another video, it’s honestly such a masterpiece of a musical composition. :000000

This was so freaking good.
Legit best outro ever

I'm sad Gravity Rush is over.
no Ace Combat music. sadge
Percival Schuttenbach is a minor character in the Witcher books. I think the band chose the name cause they were fans 🙂
I popped off so damn hard for the Gravity Rush soundtrack!!!!
Listening to Laude reminded me of the game Kingdom Come Deliverance, which has a great OST. You should also give the Saint Barbara Theme for the upcoming KCD 2 a listen.
Merci!

Thanks for my annual dose of gravity rush getting repped
I liked Garth and Greg's piece. I imagined it could fit well in an IP like Ni No Kuni.
Hello there! :D
Chill dudes 🤙
If you liked the Witcher track, I can definitely recommend a soundtrack from The Pathless.
terrible outro? you mean the best
where is the omnissiah?
Funny
man, you don't do Armored Core or Ace Combat anymore.
