Hey movie fans! In this video I am going to go over how 4k Restorations can actually make movies so much better and why some restorations look better than others - this is kind of Part 2 to my video that questions how 4k restorations can ruin the tone and feel of some old movies by changing the intent of the filmmakers...but here, let's take a look at what makes for an amazing 4k restoration! I got you, let's go do this!

I like my film grain the movie quality, when HD started I remember telling people it looks like a soap opera or a video game something was off and people didn't understand what I was referring to but now people talk about it more but personally I like that movie quality and grain, in my home theater I have a screen and projector not a tv and no recliner lazboy type chairs I have real theater seats from a movie theater Red with that spring up seat and drop down armrests with cup holders, I want the old school 80s movie theater experience!! #noschoolliketheoldschool

Old school is the best!! I don't like it when they remove grain! Grain is part of the magic!!

Blade Runner blew me away on 4k but other films are lackluster I really don't know why??? Anyone feel free to explain

I think I touched on it a lot of the reasons why in the video -I dont think the reasons some are better and some are not is exclusive to The Shining and Weird Science that I used in the video... I think a lot of it has to do with how the movies were filmed - the lenses, the cameras, all of that

thanks a lot man!! you know, I have been thinking about doing a video with my top 10 favorite horror movies BUT...it is so damn hard to decide....if we count Jaws and Aliens as horror, theyd have to be near top of my list...BUT I my first recollections of seeing a horror movie, I was 5 or 6 years old when a Nightmare on Elm street came to home video and on that night, we watched NOES and Amityville Horror and those 2 stuck with me my whole life! So they are around the top! such an intense subject lol...I have to give the list a lot of thought hahaha

Sorry but for me, Weird Science is just a little too grainy to fully enjoy. It looks sharper and more colourful, yes, but the grain is a little too pronounced for me.
Yes, I understand that's how it was shot and I'm not totally against grain but there are just some films where the it looks rather heavy and oppressive, and it's distracting and jarring. That's just me.
Conversely, if it's one thing I've noticed is that so many of older films have scenes shot out of focus - closeups of faces look soft and blurry, while their collars or clothing looks sharp and clear...and until AI gets better, there's nothing that could be done about it, so the quality on older film restorations can be spotty.
Also where they use lots of dissolve and swipe edits between scenes, which are essentially the same as optical effects shots, will always look blurry and of significantly lower quality. Some restorations will fix that as soon as the edit is finished, but others, such as the film Giant, do not and so whole scenes after a dissolve edit will look terrible until the next cut. This I find particularly annoying, because the rest of the film looks amazing, but they made use of many, many dissolve and swipe edits.

I think it is a preference thing...if you have grown up and been accustomed to "clean" digital movies and tv shows and have had no interest in filmmaking then you may lean the digital clean version...for me, and virtually everyone who has made films, the "filmic" look is the pure and true look of cinema... I'd also say that the chances are those films don't have a lot of actual out of focus shots, I think that probably goes back again to if you have gotten used to the fake overly sharp look of digital...digital oversharpens because it can't create the same kind of focus levels as our eyes - it needs harder lines and creates harder lines...that said, when shooting with film, especially a long time ago, you measured for focus with an actual measuring tape so mistakes could happen lol... I'm on team grain...grain is part of actual film and is part of the soul and purity...much the same way vinyl sounds much better than digital music because of the imperfections and heart it has - it is more reflective of real life the way we see and hear things! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!!

Ya, too many restoration outfits want to make it either heavy grain or no grain, ignoring the fact that what it should always be is fine grain, AKA mid grain. We can only hope that one day they'll learn.
