    I’m always saying to people, “movies have been, and can be better than this!”
    The lack of in camera trickery is a big one for me. I can watch an 80’s film with a mediocre script - but still have a good time if there’s interesting effects.
    Just saw Furiosa, and I did like it. But what keeps a good film from being a great film is all the cgi.
    I kept thinking, “that was a fun scene - how awesome would that have been if it was done with real stunts.”

    • @AVAPopCulture
      @AVAPopCulture  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      agreed! in camera and practical FX are part of what make movies awesome and give them high rewatchability even when the film is older, you can watch and discuss and remember what it was like to see it the first time and the craftsmanship that went into it!

    A big reason that most modern movies all look the same, regardless of the genre is that they're all employing the same post-production techniques and that gives everything these days a uniformed similarity we never saw before in the past. Also going from film to digital didn't help. Before we got natural lighting and thus realism, today it's very slick and phony like some perfect opera performance with everything in place and nothing left to chance. CGI will remove perfectly natural things that would've been (left) there in the past because there was no way to remove them then, say a bird flying by or whatever but that was real life in a fictional story and accepted as such alas that kind of reality is not allowed anymore. Often the best movies you remember, have 'imperfections' in them that's partly why they're so memorable. Really good movies died when the '90s ended, for the last t w e n t y years it's mainly been safeness above quality i.e. the craftmanship behind the camera and before the camera changed forever.

    Another issue is alot of young writers today have very little life experiences compared to past writers.

    • @AVAPopCulture
      @AVAPopCulture  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      100% I was thinking about that when I mentioned when you write, your life experience should shape the story BUT you're right, a lot of young writers have very little real world life experience to draw from...everything they've experienced comes with those "safety boxes"

    I used to go to movies on average once a month. About 10 years ago I notice a drop in the quality of the films. So starting in 2014 I began seeing one movie a year. The last time I was in a movie theater was 2017. IMO, the quality of the movies declined because the propaganda message became more important then quality, creativity or pleasing the audience. Now I have gotten out of the habit of going to the movies. The studios have allowed millions of people to get out of the habit of going to the movies.

      I literally can't watch these Superhero movies because they are just advertisements for the military, and they get HUGE paychecks for their productions from the Army, etc.
      And I've also noticed a big, very annoying thing with Interracial relationships as the only time that we see non-white people in films. Why can't black couples exist **and** interracial couples? Nope, just the interracial couple.
      The problem used to be that non-white actors were tokens, now the interracial couple is the token AND sometimes? They kill or remove the black / non-white people from the couple and let the white person stay in the movie or TV show. So... what was the point?

    All good points but I seriously think the plan is to remake everything and make the old stuff go away or not be available, and in 30 years those are the movies that will be taught in film school. The label warnings are starting to make me watch more VHS.

    We definitely live in hypocritical and hypersensitive times. Things like Weird Science cannot be produced but then we have shows like Euphoria that fetishizes teenage life. Studios need to return to just focusing on making great projects and just leave the rest alone.

      @@AVAPopCulture I believe in honesty. I've seen sleazy and highly sexualized comedy movies from James Bond to _Caddyshack_ to _Airplane!_ and forward to _Wayne's World, Election_ (the 1999 movie with Reese Witherspoon) and ... I'm sure I've seen some sex comedy from the 2000's.
      I'm keeping it real, I would defend any of the movies I mentioned above. I even like John Hughes' _Sixteen Candles._ But _Weird Science_ is 0% quality shit out of the toilet. It's rancid. Complete garbage. It sucks. On every level, except a couple of songs on the soundtrack.
      I don't do Cultivated Identity nonsense. If I like _Bill and Ted,_ it's going to be because they are interesting characters who have decent motivations to do interesting things. If I like _Beavis and Butthead,_ it's going to be because Mike Judge is a satirical heavyweight and his ironic observations are intelligent and novel.
      The USA Network's TV series version of _Weird Science_ was miles ahead of the 1985 wankfest for boring nerds. And any "Public Opinion" to the contrary has to come swinging hard if they expect me to listen to any excuses for that loser lemon of a movie.

    I hear what you’re trying to say, we’re making it more difficult and complicated than it really is, at least the issues on why films have been falling in quality and failing in the past 10 years. I believe it has to do with new growth of industry, a couple guys willing to put, some of their wealth together and open up their own private studio, higher their own writers, and not have to deal with the politics of a studio that has been corrupted by modernism. All these awesome writers that get rejected by big studios, a lot of directors, actors, are frustrated today, but what are they doing to maintain their careers and other people like them. I think it’s about time people start understanding that the reason why businesses were so successful 70 to 100 years ago is because people worked together, they had their differences they had their problems, but they knew they couldn’t make it without each other. Sony started in the 40s a little after World War II and it took them almost 15 years two main partners to work together to build an empire, later on as they became more used to being here in America they partnered with Phillips for a long time, and they grew Exponentially in between the 70s and the 2000s. We forget that private enterprise can become an industry on its own as well, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Christopher Nolan as a Director, and I’m sure that they know people with other kinds of wealth that can pull Resources 7:23 together and do something that hasn’t been done in decades. You have your own company you set the standards, set the boundaries, when you hire writers under your company, Disney Warner Brothers all these Walling studios have no right or say about the content that you can put out. we can have some thing as great as die hard, not exactly like it, but at least having the ability to create something without worrying too much about politics, the cable guy, movies like this would not be made today because of the lobbyist and politicians. They all go on TV and tell us how to vote, it’s no coincidence that they are Promoting politics 100% in the most known studios to do with Hollywood. The lesson is men need to start working together again, it’s simple, we make it too complicated, we have resources. We have great writers. We have people that know what they’re doing they’re just not being Used anymore because of certain preferences. We all know James Cameron would not have a prayer if he was a young 20-year-old Director trying to do something great in the present day.

      Modernism? If by "Modern" you mean AI? Okay. If by "Modern" you mean that stupid male stars have been making 50 million per movie more than the highest paid women? Okay. That's not a modern thing. But, okay. Sounds like you're big confused. But, okay.

  • @ericspalacio
    @ericspalacio 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Another thing I know people can misinterpret certain things about what I’m saying, because they’ve seen other companies partner today, but the difference between the way they did it now and the way they do it today, is companies only partner when they’re dying, when they’re desperate and thirsty. Back in the day companies partner together because they were hungry, they were on fire, they wanted to set the world, a blaze of something that they had never seen before, Cree, and an imaginable glory of excellence, they partnered together before their success key point before their success. 10:03

      @@AVAPopCulture Sounds like you could be grasping at straws. I WILL, HOWEVER, agree with the current trend of showing characters dealing with Trauma. Especially that painful _Five Nights at Freddy's_ movie. The main character had all the character run out of him. All he had to define him was the trauma. But... that's not how it works. People still function while being effected by trauma. UNTIL they stop functioning. All we saw with that stupid main character was a posturing brand of Half-Function without being a person. He wasn't a person, just a body filled with Trauma / Grief. That's not how it works.

    You know what they can do is make the R rated movie and edit it to get a PG-13 version and release them both at the same time. I remember watching a lot of movies on TV that were rated R. But got edited down to be able to air on television. Being a father, I wish there were PG 13 versions of certain films I would feel comfortable sharing with my son.

    I have a copy of Total Recall on DVD, where it is warned that some attitudes in the film are a reflection of the times which may seem offensive today and that these are not necessarily attitudes that are shared by the destibuture. Not on the DVD cover, but in the film itself before the opening credits. The only potential offensive thing I could find was the villain cohagen saying something sexist about women in a single scene. But that's the villain, he's not supposed to have the right attitudes and be a nice guy. You are not meant to watch the film and think he is right.

    My biggest issue with new films is how they are filmed. They don't have that same look anymore. Everything looks drab and dull now. Movies used to look great. Back to the Future, E.T., Poltergeist... They all look beautiful. Even lower budget movies like Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween look great.
    I like diversity in movies. I would love to see more diversity. The problem is, the cast may be more diverse in certain ways, but they are all the same character. They have the same mindset. They are bland and boring. Not every new movie but just in general. There is no charm to the characters. All the characters have to be perfect. I miss movies that showed someone learn and grow in the film. We all have flaws and say stupid things but we learn and grow.
    I'm also really tired of remakes. Why remake a perfect film? Nightmare on Elm Street did not need a remake. I would movie rather see a sequel much like the Scream movies. You can add new characters while still respecting the original characters and stories.
    Another thing is when a movie would obviously be better as a rated R film but they make it a PG 13 film to get more young people in the seats. Some good examples are Lisa Frankenstein and Megan. Both decent films that would have been so much better with some gore. Not every film needs to be R but some would benefit from the R rating.
    I also don't have an issue with a message in movies. If a movie is good, it's good. Just look at They Live. Great movie with a message. John Hughes movies had messages. Some of them were great. The People Under the Stairs, Last House on the Left, and The Hills have Eyes are all fantastic films with messages. Message movies are great. They just need to be entertaining. That's all I care about. Is it entertaining? And if it has a message too, all the better.
    I must also say, Debra Hill was better at writing dialog in general. Not just girls. Try watching a Carpenter film after she left and try telling me Carpenter dialog is good. He is a great director but he is terrible with character.
    Also, as a female, girl power rocks! I got into horror films because of the badass final girls. I still love horror and have a massive collection. I have no kids (thankfully and I never will because screw that nonsense) and plenty of free time and money. Horror is my passion. I just wish new horror was better. I did really enjoy Jordan Peele's Us. Another example of how to make a message movie that is also entertaining

    Modern movies suck for the same reason modern pop music sucks...it's just the same crap rehashed over and over and over again. Remakes, reboots and sequels are such a huge percentage of everything that gets released these days. Very few original ideas being developed,

    • @AVAPopCulture
      @AVAPopCulture  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yep! very few originals....very little room for free creativity

  • @fluorescentmilkshake
    @fluorescentmilkshake 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The number one reason Modern Movies Suck is that Hollywood has created a genre mix FORCE that they demand every single film has some pandering, stupid *"ACTION!!!"* crap or else they think people will "fall asleep."
    And character writing is reduced to jokes without significant details that are more interesting than gags and bad punchlines.
    Number 2, of course, is that every movie has the same exact look and feel to it. The music all sounds the same. The colors all look the same. Even the actors look the same. You can't tell one director from another anymore, films don't have style anymore.
    Number 3 is they're afraid of sex and adult, human, mature sexuality. Real sexual frankness is in rapid decline. There is still no decent representation of queer sexuality, of serious friendships with straight and gay people. Trans and non-binary, gender non-conforming people are nowhere to be seen. Etc.
    Whether it's action or sex, people are just not treated like human beings in stories, narratives, plots, etc. That's the Number One problem with Hollywood. Movies are not about humanity anymore. Complex relationships are not as important as yanking the military's chain and capitulating to old world (ancient) conservative values.
    And those are all facts.
