This is IGNORANCE at it's best!!!! This officer should be FIRED to the point that he can't serve as a mall cop in a middle of nowhere town. My thoughts and prayers go out to that family.
I would have went up to say goodbye to my mom totally ignoring this cop. When all was said and done, my car towed, and me dragged off to jail, the lawyers and courts would take care of everything, and I would be happy to have had my moment with mom. My thoughts and prayers are with Ryan & family.
"The occupants of the vehicle jump out of the car and start running in random directions and refuse to do what is asked of them. What does him being black have to do with it? This is a dangerous situation for a cop." It's one thing to pull the guy over, it's quite another to keep writing the ticket and hold the guy there when the nurse comes out and tells you his mother really is dying. That's just sadistic, there's no other way to describe it. What an officious tool.
I am appalled at the attitude of most policemen I have encountered on duty. Where as police from a bygone era "protected and served" their community, our current crop "harrass and intimidate". Punks in uniform are the norm in todays world and I no longer "back the blue". I am an over 50 LADY and can't figure out why our police all across the country display disrespect and lack any common sense. The first words an officer needs to learn in police training are PUBLIC SERVANT!
One day my family was getting set to drive to South Carolina for our family reunion, We were in the car waiting for my uncle to get in the car. A car sideswiped my uncle's car and kept going. My sister ran inside and told my uncle. He came out, jumped in the car and sped down the street after the guy. Unfortunately he was running lights looking for the guy and we ran past a cop car. The cops obviously stopped us but when we told him what happened, one cop got in my uncles car and my sister got
That was a terrible way to do your job, it gives a black eye to the majority of police officers who are out there doing a decent job. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Moats and his family.
This happened to me. The cop issued tickets for speeding running redights wreckless endangerment wreckless driving evading an officer disrupting the public driving without a license no proof of insurance no proof of registration assault and not wearing a seatbelt. Went in front of a judge he understood the circumstance but said that doesnt give me the right to endanger others. What if this and that on and on. I had to pay a stiff fine some like no proof was dropped. Hes lucky hes a NFL player...
This is absurd...if ANY of us ran red lights, I'm sure sped, and disrespected a police officer...we'd be treated the exact same way. I would completely expect to be treated the same way f my dumb ass didn't have insurance and ran a bunch of red lights...this is a bunch of crap.
He was running thru traffic light....the cop wasn't even at fault in the beginning. Any cops would have done the same thing. Now if I were the guy who needs to go to hospital, I would call 911 or let the police know that I've got emergency and need helps to hospital asap.
In general though, Do you ever stop to think how many people lie and speed and then pull over or put on their flashers... then tell the officer the same thing just to get out of a traffic violation. THE LIES ARE MORE COMMON THAN TRUTH IN MOST SITUATIONS.
@jcdoggie Well, let's see. He ran a red light, pulled into the hospital, his wife takes off into the hospital to see her mother. And the guy is detained by the cop while he's trying to explain why he ran the red light, then nurses come out and try to reason with the cop, but he doesn't care, maybe he didn't believe they where nurses? I mean, just because they where wearing scrubs and came out of the hospital doesn't necessarily mean they where *actually* nurses right ?
I just saw this on the news over here in California. I think this officer chose poorly on extracting his authority. To be a good cop it takes a lot of basic attributes in law enforcement, but honestly by the book takes second place to good judgment. I think when this officer is in the same situation as Ryan Moats, he will take a hard look back to this day and what he did.
In the cop car and we sped down the street. We eventually caught the guy 15 blocks later because he never turned off the street. And if it wasn't for the cops assistance we probably would gave had a more difficult time proving that guy hit my uncles car because the guy immediately said it wasn't him because he just turned onto the block we pulled him over on. But the cops followed him for several blocks and nknew that was a lie. So I can't say all cops act this way, most do help you when in need
1st of all, you do need to tow a car if they can't find insurance! You can give him a ticket and move on. Instead the cop wanted to show his authority and keep him, knowing he was upset about his mother-in-law. If Ryan Moats would have walk in the hospital, I believe the cop would have shot him. This cop is abusing power!!! He thought he could get away with it, because the guy was black! Send his ass to unemployment!!!!!
I see what you are saying but the bigger picture and most important one is good judgment...Officers are condoned to going "by the book" but excellent officer exercise their instinct and good judgment and wisdom when it comes to situation like this. "By the book," occurred before Ryan Moats got out of the car. But "Good judgment," should have been exercised after Ryan Moats tried to explain himself with the help of 2 nurses and a fellow officer trying to get Moats out of a ticket.
Ofc. Powell-Read and weap for this word will haunt you forever...dis·cre·tion Pronunciation: dis-ˈkre-shən Function: noun Date: 14th century 1: the quality of being discreet : circumspection ; especially : cautious reserve in speech 2: ability to make responsible decisions 3 a: individual choice or judgment ..left the decision to his discretion.. b: power of free decision or latitude of choice within certain legal bounds 4: the result of separating or distinguishing
I think you're absurd. The man was just trying to get his wife to the hospital to see her dying mother. He ran one red light after he made sure the intersection was clear. As for disrespecting the cop, I would only hope I could have half the reserve that he showed. That cop was completely out of line. Are you saying that you wouldn't do the same thing if it was your mother that was dying? The only thing that's absurd is that this cop still has a job.
Are the nurses and hospital staff lying also? You should re-view the tape and consider the WHOLE video,,, one cannot simply take only part of a situation for the sake of making their argument...we are all humans not robots or machines...suppose it was your loved one dying? Trust me it could happen to you - would you think it's ok to miss out on saying goodbye to your loved one for ANY reason? (especially an asinine one)
Wow, I understand that cops see and have to deal with some of the scum of the Earth but damn.... he could have handled that in any other way. and they said that cop had him detained over 25minutes, where the hell was back-up(maybe another cop with some sence)? When I get pulled over there are like 2 & 3 cops in no time at all.
haha if someone is dying, giving birth, or there is a life or death situation and the police officer doesnt comply I wont be polite and nice there will be problems
But he didn't kill him. That is what's important. If you want to let the police department know your outrage, that's fine. But don't post his personal address here.
hey soccerkid how calm would you have acted knowing your mother was dying and only had mins! and how was moats at all disrespectful when her repeatedly referred to officer powell as sir....;pay attention soccer kid to the details....comprehend entire situation;
I can never understand why being forced to take a paid vacation is considered punishment.
Cop could have been a human instead of a sadist sociopath. Just ticket the damn car, no need for the person to be present.
It's obvious that the officer is more interested in his job than he was in trying to understand what's going on.

there is a reason police cars no longer say "to protect and serve"
Requiring "good judgement" from cops may just be too much to ask...that requires too much thinking for them...
"The occupants of the vehicle jump out of the car and start running in random directions and refuse to do what is asked of them. What does him being black have to do with it? This is a dangerous situation for a cop."

If he's a "kid" he needs to go. We need MEN with wisdom wearing that uniform.
yeah this has happened numerous times to me and i would love to see a system that allows citizens to fight back to assholes like these!

I hope his whole department came down on him for bringing a media fire storm on their laps
The paper reported that Moats slowed down and checked for oncoming traffic before going through the red light.

No, they won't because they have too much power...many of us bitching until something is done, is the only way he will be punished....period.
Lmao. And they wonder why we call em pigs. Absolutely pathetic and inhumane.
They are rewarding him?!? Are you kidding me? He does that then gets paid for no work wow
He was running thru traffic light....the cop wasn't even at fault in the beginning. Any cops would have done the same thing. Now if I were the guy who needs to go to hospital, I would call 911 or let the police know that I've got emergency and need helps to hospital asap.
What about compassion? Did the cop show compassion? Of course not.
we need cops to cop the cops.
extravagant circumstances.
stand up job for the cop. don't disobey the cops or you will end up like Oscar Grant.
In general though, Do you ever stop to think how many people lie and speed and then pull over or put on their flashers... then tell the officer the same thing just to get out of a traffic violation. THE LIES ARE MORE COMMON THAN TRUTH IN MOST SITUATIONS.
@jcdoggie Well, let's see.

Typical cop behavior these days...

Common sense goes a long way !
could the ticket have waited 30 minutes?
i have to agree with the cop on this one. they could have cooperated and been on their way.
Paid leave?! WTF?!
*bangs head on wall*
when facepalm isnt enough...
:'( poor dude, missed his mother-in-law's death
Oink, oink.

A "Crash" story.
is there an online petition?
That cop was a jerk. Dumb
I wonder if he is a racist?
