For anybody who's ever been out of work, and knows the stress and the pressure of having to interview for a job, this is one of the greatest scenes of all time.
I can completely sympathize with that. Earlier this year, I was laid off from a job that I was making good money doing, and at a bad time too, no less. I wasn’t in a custody battle but I couldn’t live off unemployment benefits. Luckily, I was able to land back on my feet within 3 weeks. And just like Mr. Kramer, my salary was reduced but I didn’t care because I needed a job.
Matt Prado My problem is last year my Father passed away so that meant I had to move away from my hometown for the first time in my life to live with family elsewhere in the world so that meant I had to quit work as well as leaving friends & family behind! I watched this movie a few months ago, during a time filled with uncertainty. I was about to lose my job. I didn't know what the future had in store for me. I was terrified at the idea of being unemployed. I had already experienced unemployment in my life, and I was afraid to go back to that dark place again. Four days after I quit my former job, I got the opportunity to attend an interview for a job position I had applied for. This was exactly the opportunity I was looking for. I went to this interview with the same determination as Ted, having promised myself that I would get the job no matter what. I had downloaded the audio clip of this scene into my phone. While on my way going to the interview, I kept listening to it, again and again. This scene served as my inspiration. I attended the interview, gave it my best shot, tried to appear as confident as Dustin Hoffman. And two days later, i got the job. This scene will always be special to me because it inspired me beyond words. At a time when I was lost, it gave me the courage to keep hoping. It played a major part in the fact that I finally got the job I've been looking for.
For those who haven’t seen the full movie or don’t remember the context, it wasn’t just the desperation of being out of work, which is already portrayed well here. He had an impending custody hearing scheduled for the first week of January and would’ve been completely done for going into that without employment. The $4800 less in salary was absolutely meaningless compared to the possibility of losing his son. He guaranteed his lawyer a job in 24 hours, and he delivered.
Amen! Ya Gotta Do What Ya Gotta Do to get paid. Dustin Hoffman's Facial Expressions are brilliant. Although what he did Kissing The Lady would be "bad" by today's standards when you have good fortune you are so happy you overlook certain things. I think it's a matter of luck: the emotions are usually hard to control for anybody, and sometimes being backed into a corner just gets the adrenaline flowing, pepping one up. In real life, 8 out of ten times the guy would flinch, giving some sign of desperation that would turn them, off. On the other hand, he caught them in a holiday celebration which might have made them generous: who wouldn't enjoy the holiday more giving a guy a job, versus sending him home in despair? I genuinely feel that this is one of the most inspirational sequences in all of cinema for anyone in a difficult and seemingly helpless situation. In the context of the film, knowing that failure will almost certainly mean losing his son, Ted's under huge pressure, with this contrasted by the fun and joy of the party at the office. But throughout he remains determined, clear on what he wants and firm whilst staying polite. He won't let any obstacle stand in his way and the payoff is the relief and happiness in his face at 4:08 when he gets what he needs.
In 2022-23 it kind of is easy. If you have the qualifications and your industry is understaffed, you can pick and choose with a good number of years under your belt. I received many offers within 24-hours or when the interview wrapped up. It's a good feeling.
For anyone with Dustin Hoffman's swagger and eloquence, they would be....especially in the late 70's when they based hiring decisions more on who was more qualified for the job and less on filling minority employment quotas.
I originally saw this at the movie theater when I was about 10 years old and through the years this was always one of my favorite parts of the movie but it's definitely now my favorite because I can completely identify with what he's going through, and that extreme relief when you get a really good job after you went through so much hell
I love this scene..makes me cry because we have to put others besides our selves..he has to do this for his child..humility n the cruelness of this world will make u a man!!
It can happen with dedication - I was temporarily out of work, and applied everywhere. Within two weeks, .I was given an interview, offered the job and I started the very next morning.
In 2022, he’d get fired one minute after getting hired for kissing that lady without her consent which is technically sexual assault. If she decides to call the cops he might even get arrested. Mrs. Kramer would use that against him in court and he’d lose the kid permanently. It’d be an entirely different movie 😆
It's quite possible that they created the track specifically for the movie. Might have been cheaper to do it that way than pay the rights for an existing song.
I think your right and this is probably the case. I have been trying to find this song (on and off) for the alt 7 years - by every now and then doing a search on some of the lyrics - nothing ever comes up ... I suspect the producer had a friend who had a fiend who agreed to bash out a tune for them for the movie. i know to get a copy righted song into a movie used in a song takes one of two things (or both) a hell of a lot of money or you know some one in the music business who will do you a favor ...
Quite recently I was given the bad news my Sainsbury's store was closing and I was worried on being jobless. The managers put up vacancies for new roles and I seen one & applied. I watched and studied this scene saying to myself I was getting the job and I went in for my interview feeling confident and determined. And a few days later I got the job! This scene was the inspiration for my success. If anyone needs motivation this scene is it.
Questa è la scena piu' potente di questo splendido film. Scritto benissimo. Ed è anche una delle scene che terro' sempre con me. IMMENSO DUSTIN HOFFMAN
It's a catchy disco song - but I suspect that it was a song just written for the movie (perhaps to avoid issues around negotiating copyright policies) as the song, by any title description does not appear in the end credits of the movie... I have the dvd and have looked at the end credits carefully - it's not there ..
In real life they'd say the guy must be an idiot to leave his briefcase, and retract the job offer, and just chuck the briefcase with a "thanks, but no thanks' not on it out the window so it lands on his head. By the way, the guy who hires him only works there part time. In "3 days of the Condor" you see him working for the CIA operating a switchboard.
@@m.e.d.7997 , Definitely, he could not have gotten away with that nowadays as that would be considered sexual harassment. I wondered what he might have been thinking. Then again, he did this at a party but still, the woman looked like she did not know him at all.

@@luiscuesta0719 This has nothing to do with being Liberal or Conservative politically. Today, kissing a complete stranger at a company party would be definitely be considered sexual harassment. As for Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman), I don't know what he was thinking except he was thrilled he landed a job and he was surrounded by people who were having a company party. @1:03 - Wow ! Now that was fast ! The employment clerk called the company to book an appointment for Kramer, and he arrived before the receptionist had even put the phone down !
Damn.. even if those disco songs were just meant as 'throwaway background party songs' just for the movie, they're actually JAMS! (unintentionally?) lol Would still love to know if they're actually real songs or just 30 sec. snippets made for the movie (to avoid copyright etc..) From the comments on here, seems they're nowhere to be found :/
This scene is so fantastic - life forces Ted's hand into desperately begging for a position for which he is well overqualified, but he puts his best foot forward, knocks it out of the park, and puts his foot down when he has to.
Just watched this on Amazon Video. Great film. Anyone know what the "ride along with me, set me free" song playing in the last 30 seconds at the Christmas party is? Shazam, Google et al have all let me down.
I remember watching this movie for the first time in my early 20s and thinking about the Streep character, 'what a bitch, running out on her husband and kid like that.' I watched it again about seven years later and I got it and understood why she left. She'd become completely immersed in her husband's identity. She was no longer Joanna Kramer, she was Ted Kramer's wife and Billy Kramer's mother. She had to re - establish her individuality.
Smoking and drinking in a workplace setting with no health police demanding to shut everything down. Being able to kiss a pretty woman you don't know without anyone freaking out. The 70s were the last truly great time to be alive.
Even back then, he would need written proof of the job offer to hold up in court, which HR wouldn't be able to draft for him until after the holidays anyway (since they likely all have already stopped working).
I've been searching for that song as well... I tried putting Shazam/Soundhound close to the speakers, typing the lyrics... nothing... any luck from the date of your post?
I'm facing the same problem but I found that there's a ton of disco and new wave songs that are so obscure that they only exist via bootleg recorded radio or club play. This song sounds like something from First Choice, Change, Janice McClain, Brainstorm, People's Choice, etc....
In 2022 after a successful 40 year career with thus company, the coworker he kissed at the end of the scene files a sexual harassment complaint and he gets fired.
he doesn't get fired, because his sharp lawyer is able to prove that the girl set the whole thing up to get her own lawsuit against the company, by getting Kramer's wife to leave him so he would get fired and apply for this job and kiss her, all of it an elaborate scheme to launch her own sexual harrassment case.
Also to think that in this day and age, Interviews are so different. They need to do a background check, sometimes a credit check, and they are more strict when it comes to references. Also it reminds me of Thirtysomething when Michael Steadman and Elliot Weston lost their Ad Agency and Michael goes on an Interview with a Company that looks like "Walmart" in it's early days. It's far below him but he knows that Beggars Can't Be Choosers. Elliot finds out and he is furious but Michael tells him, he's Two Months behind on his Mortgage, his Wife Hope isn't working and they have a New Baby coming which is a miracle since they suffered a miscarriage. Co-Incidentally in England there was a Little Girl named Cheryl Ann Tweedy who used to Model for a Store similar to Walmart with Flyers who became a Music Superstar as part of Girls Aloud.
I'm not sure but The Lady whom Dustin Hoffman kissed was Jennifer Warren who was in The Movie Celebrity as part of the Prosecuting Team as well as the Short Lived Series Paper Dolls about The Modelling Industry.

"Mr Kramer, I'm not sure we have anything here that is suitable for you.." "Look, I'm desperate - I'll take a $200 salary with unpaid overtime." "Can you start tomorrow ?"
"I'll pay you to let me work here so I can say I have a job at the custody hearing. By the way, try on my new Bulova, it would look nice on you." ... "You're hired."
I like when movies paced themselves and allowed a scene to just sit without rapid fire dialogue every second.
Dustin Hoffman plays desperate characters so well
We often talk about how brave and dedicated moms can be but there are also some dads who do all in their power for their children well-being.
I liked the...pulling up the zipper,...just before he demanded an answer...now!...great touch.
God!! I miss the 70s..thats a christmas party without all the pc n hr bullshit!!
God was definitely with Ted
I was interviewed by Dyad during their 1979 office Christmas party and got the job. They had great annual garden parties.
When you think about it it actually IS a great time to interview for a job.
@@m.e.d.7997 It was. It was a great computer to work for too I shoulda stayed there or gone back.
If only job interviews were as easy as this in real life haha
In 2022-23 it kind of is easy. If you have the qualifications and your industry is understaffed, you can pick and choose with a good number of years under your belt. I received many offers within 24-hours or when the interview wrapped up. It's a good feeling.
For anyone with Dustin Hoffman's swagger and eloquence, they would be....especially in the late 70's when they based hiring decisions more on who was more qualified for the job and less on filling minority employment quotas.
People used to wear real clothes back then. I'm impressed
@3:42 Everybody's whispering "Who's the stiff ?"
DUSTIN es un actor de primera clase!
Ah, the seventies. When a man could celebrate a new job by sexually harassing a new co-worker even before his official start date.
It's quite possible that they created the track specifically for the movie. Might have been cheaper to do it that way than pay the rights for an existing song.
That's true. I was too young to know the difference back then.
Check the credits at the end of the movie 👍
I've probably watched this movie 6 times. The acting is amazing. This movie and "The China Syndrome" are my favorite films of 1979.
how about "Manhattan"?
@@AnonYmous-ry2jn I can't remember if I've seen the whole film. I'll have to watch it.
It’s incredible the amount of comments this clip has garnered, but this is by far my favorite.
Questa è la scena piu' potente di questo splendido film. Scritto benissimo. Ed è anche una delle scene che terro' sempre con me. IMMENSO DUSTIN HOFFMAN
4:33 Today: Hired and Fired The Same Day.
Love this scene. Wonderful film.. Does anyone know the name of the track played as he leaves the office after gaining the job?
It's a catchy disco song - but I suspect that it was a song just written for the movie (perhaps to avoid issues around negotiating copyright policies) as the song, by any title description does not appear in the end credits of the movie... I have the dvd and have looked at the end credits carefully - it's not there ..
It's the "kramer is a rapist" song.
He left his suitcase in the office to insure he could come back in.
In real life they'd say the guy must be an idiot to leave his briefcase, and retract the job offer, and just chuck the briefcase with a "thanks, but no thanks' not on it out the window so it lands on his head. By the way, the guy who hires him only works there part time. In "3 days of the Condor" you see him working for the CIA operating a switchboard.
nice view of the park
Ted Kramer is what a real man should be. Responsible, able, strong. Love this character.
The girl at last scene: WTF…… Hey Dustin Hoffman!
if that was done today he would have been sued and terminated before he even started the job.
Sad.
@@m.e.d.7997 , Definitely, he could not have gotten away with that nowadays as that would be considered sexual harassment. I wondered what he might have been thinking. Then again, he did this at a party but still, the woman looked like she did not know him at all.
@@williamlandolfi7858 Workplace flirtations are even obsolete now. Mena re afraid to say much to a woman unrelated to work business. The same goes for women. I think some of it went too far for sure.
Happy birthday to Dustin Hoffman 8 8. This is my favorite scene of his after the end of the 🎓 graduate of course
He just turned 84. He was 42 when he made Kramer vs Kramer.
@@hehhehhuhhuh7014 thank you for sharing I like to know the facts
@@hehhehhuhhuh7014 Joke's on you pal. The clock caught up and he's turning 88.
@@AnonYmous-ry2jn What's your point?
this is why Pacino lost the Oscar, but Dustin was great in this
At the first time I saw a scene of this movie , I thought he was Alpacino
Pacino incidentally turned the roll of Ted Kramer down.
This is an awesome scene, it inspires me to use this tactic and use it in my own way for my next job interview. :)
No shitdick
Show me anybody with that much persistence in today's world?? NY, gotta love that place during the times!!
$4,800 is equivalent to about $20,000 in 2022 dollars. A whopper of a pay cut, fr.
but was it a small or large *percentage* of his prior pay?
04:32 Could you possibly imagine such a kiss happening today? Everyone would scream "sexual harassment!"
Christopher Thorkon it brings that famous photo from WWII to mind, the soldier kissing a nurse on the street.
Right, like if i think your cute Christopher and i got a new job why cant I go up to you and kiss you passionalty for a second, and why should you feel weird about that? I hate liberals
I am not saying that action was right but we have to remember that this scene took place in the late 1970's (more than 40 years ago). I don't think people were as concerned about sexual harassment as they are today.
@@williamlandolfi7858 I was being sarcastic about that last part, you know how super conservatives think anything that makes sense to not be an asshole is a liberal agenda, and im not saying we should cancel the actor or anything. But it definitely should not be glorified or wished that it happened today, thats creepy.
@@williamlandolfi7858 (as far as intended film composition, the message reads: m only missing a wife-double to feel complete nd too join these festivities)
I didn't have to do it like this but the way he gets a job so fast reminds me of myself. Company i was working for went bankrupt the end of November. The same day i was told my boss gave me details of someone who could help me. I had a job the next day. It ended up being a shit job so i applied for another, they called me the next day i had an interview the next and was hired the same day.
And thus he was instantly fired
This is what I call "Nothing to lose and willing to risk it".
(unintentionally?) lol Would still love to know if they're actually real songs or just 30 sec. snippets made for the movie (to avoid copyright etc..) From the comments on here, seems they're nowhere to be found :/
I wanna know too.
I came here to try and find what this track is. It doesn't seem to be listed anywhere as part of the soundtrack...
This scene is so fantastic - life forces Ted's hand into desperately begging for a position for which he is well overqualified, but he puts his best foot forward, knocks it out of the park, and puts his foot down when he has to.
Whenever I need a confidence boost, this does it.
#DustinH, you were great at 'getting the job' in #Tootsie too.
this is a great scene. Someone should try this 1 day offer in real life.
Just watched this on Amazon Video. Great film. Anyone know what the "ride along with me, set me free" song playing in the last 30 seconds at the Christmas party is? Shazam, Google et al have all let me down.
I think I heard somewhere it was composed specifically for the movie to bypass copyright law or something.
That guy did not deserve the commission.
Well said!! I so agree!
The 80's were, too!!
How can you kiss someone without consent?,smoke and get cancer, drink get drunk and fight, lol people have evolved
Dewan M Durnto people haven’t evolved. They still smoke, drink etc
In today's world he probably would have been charged for kissing that woman without her consent.
He should have had his job offer revoked immediately after that!
Even back then, he would need written proof of the job offer to hold up in court, which HR wouldn't be able to draft for him until after the holidays anyway (since they likely all have already stopped working).
God knows how advertising executives in the 70s managed to get any work done without computers
Edward Bliss Hard Work

Very determined
What is the song playing at 2:00?? I have always wanted to know!!!
I've been searching for that song as well... I tried putting Shazam/Soundhound close to the speakers, typing the lyrics... nothing... any luck from the date of your post?
none at all.
I'm facing the same problem but I found that there's a ton of disco and new wave songs that are so obscure that they only exist via bootleg recorded radio or club play. This song sounds like something from First Choice, Change, Janice McClain, Brainstorm, People's Choice, etc....
***** Troll 😂😂😂
Is it Disco Rider?
In 2022 after a successful 40 year career with thus company, the coworker he kissed at the end of the scene files a sexual harassment complaint and he gets fired.
he doesn't get fired, because his sharp lawyer is able to prove that the girl set the whole thing up to get her own lawsuit against the company, by getting Kramer's wife to leave him so he would get fired and apply for this job and kiss her, all of it an elaborate scheme to launch her own sexual harrassment case.
Well kissing a stranger at the Xmas party without her consent ... Another court case for him ... Lol
🤣😁
3:25 Getting "The Graduate" vibes. Only question is.....Where are Simon & Garfunkel, Elaine and/or Mrs. Robinson?
I forgot what a great movie this was
story of a man who goes against the clock
