I misspoke at the end of the video (honestly, again, MTG product contents have become so convoluted and shifting that even I am frequently making minor errors like this, so imagine the average customer): It's two (2) NON-foil expeditions in the topper with a CHANCE at additional expeditions IN foil IN the Collector box, meaning you could potentially walk away with multiple full art and even foil fetchlands.
In my local Store a box is 95.- Swiss Francs (~100$) 😂👍🏼

Rudy/Alpha Investments does unboxings and you get the 2 non-foil box toppers and between 2 and 3, possibly foil, lands in the Collectors box.

Wizards of the Coast need to bring back MSRP on Magic: The Gathering products so their customer know they are getting a product for a fair price. Not doing so damages both brand and identity, as well as customer enjoyment and overall reception of the product. If you WANT to knowingly pay more for a product, fine, knock yourself out, but I am beyond frustrated with how many people are UNKNOWINGLY paying FAR too much for Magic products due to a lack of MSRP. "Oh, Commander Legends is $150 per box? Ok?" No, it is not okay. Don't pay above $125, and quite frankly, there's more available for less.
Completely agree. I got lucky and my lgs was selling for £100 on preorder so I feel like I got a good deal. Saving the box to draft with friends when it’s safe!

This very thing is what scares me about Commander Collection: Green thats coming out in a few weeks... Normally products like that are around $50 or so, but majority of places, even high end online retailers are preordering them for $100+... It just feels really scummy to not have an msrp...

The market rate on those appears to be $400... I assume he got it for MUCH MUCH less than that before the speculator bubble that's popping off right now. So, technically it's an amazing investment if he locks in those gains.

To be fair, Homelands is a better draft experience than commander legends.

The first LGS I went to attempted to charge me $160 BEFORE tax, and with a Baron Sengir instead of Mana Confluence!!! Literally told them I'd just take my money to a store that charges less and did just that! Got my box with the proper promo for $130 AND more in-store credit than the first store would have given me. This is what happens when you treat your customers unfairly! Professor is right, don't let scummy store owners price gouge you!

My LGS owner is basically a friend of mine now. Paid $125 for the booster box and got Baron and Mana Confluence.

I got mine for $150 flat with both baron and mana confluence. Which I am pretty content with. Got a vampiric tutor and plenty of fun commanders. But then again my living situation isn't like others and I can definitely see the $20 extra being steep for some people.

it was the first release I was psyched about for a while and then it didn't make it in functional volume. Hopefully when the world goes back to normal...

This product offers an amazing draft experience. I wouldn't recommande just to crack packs, but it's great to be able to draft the commander format!

Thays the only reason I'm grabbing 2 boxes to sit on to draft later down the line honestly. I already bought the only 2 cards I wanted out of the set in oppo agent and undergrowth Stadium for my meren deck i just want to draft it now in the future.
As someone who bought a box and a collector box, I agree. Unfortunately my store isn't doing drafts yet because Florida is still surging with cases, but it does seem like a phenomenal draft set for sure

While I agree with almost everything here, I can't abide the take that this draft format is "not commander enough". That's unfair to the concept. An Eldraine draft does not contain games of standard. A Horizons draft does not contain games of modern. An expectation for this draft format to conform so closely to constructed commander feels unreasonable to me.
True but the gap feels a bit Larger this time. Breaking the Singleton rule is what most disturbed me. Is as if in standard drafts you could go up to 8 of the same card.

@@RobMedellin Yes. That is how drafts work. You pick up 8 copies of any card in a draft, it is legal to include all of them.

@@RobMedellin No limited format contains any limits on copies of a single card. There are a few odd exceptions such as Seven Dwarves, where the card itself specifies a limit of 7.
This is one of the few rare times I must disagree with you, I found drafting with four people to be an extremely zesty and rewarding enterprise. I also find the monarch cards in particular to be a barrel of fun in my commander decks and games. Hullbreacher and opposition agent are absolute bombs, too.

This is my go to MtG channel for product reviews because unlike other TH-camrs, the professor never bullshits about the price, value and the blunders of both WotC and some LGS when it comes to handling Magic products. Whether it’s the perpetual lie of the reserve list, the obvious mark ups due to lack of MSRP, or the rip offs that are collector and premium packs, the professor always tells it straight and provides good advice for any would be buyers to avoid bad merchants and bad products.
Thank you professor for always being a diligent and honest reviewer looking out for the players first before any business interests. If only more people were like you, and were interested in, you know, playing this game and helping others play and have fun with the game, instead of trying to rip off suckers in the second hand market or pushing BS products because “value” or whatever. I can only imagine how much better the game would be if we had more professors and less wanna be Wall Street traders

The Professor is always properly critical, without going too far in the other direction and creating fake outrage to drive clicks. He's very honest and even handed.

I got a jeweled lotus from one of the three pack boosters at walmart, I’m really new to the hobby, and I had no idea it was worth that much until I saw the video and my heart literally skipped a beat
I'm always suprised how much cheaper the card prices are in Europe.
The problem in NA is the immense inflation from night to day. The main way for people to buy cards in Europe is through Card Market, where anyone can buy or sell, which makes the prices more competitive. They have a really good system.

My lgs sells commander legends for 130€ per box !
I bought 12 boosters for the prerealese and had to pay nearly 70€ for it
And for standard sets the prerealese packs cost 40€ to participate to the event. It's not worth it compzred to the price of the singles online so it's more and more difficult for us to keep playing at our lgs. The inflation is HUGE compared to a few years ago when we could buy those prerelease packs for less than 30€, I remember my lgs sold them for 26 € in 2017

Last standard pre release I went was from theros and it was 23€, it seems asking a bit too much for players to play 40€ for standard, that's the price for a draft of modern horizons. I'm speaking from Portugal, I'm really curious where are they making those insane prices??

I was able to play this in both draft and sealed, and personally, found the game play to be fun and varied. The game seemed to only get jammed up when multiple players (2+) were playing the token, elf or pirate archetypes.
I sat right next to a fellow elf ganger and then played my first match with them...
After seeing the price of jeweled lotus I audibly said “nice” followed directly by The Professor saying “... not nice...”

well i do understand but you got to remember the covid was way worse when jumpstart came out commader legends is much closer to the area the dust is settling area covid (its still bad just not as bad when jumpstart came out)
I went to my LGS a week after it was released. They were charging $15 per booster. No thanks.

Wow, this is the most I’ve ever disagreed with a video of yours. I played multiple webcam prerelease sealed events and it was so much fun. It really felt like a commander game. Way better than most prerelease events. Going to do some sealed with friends as well. You can have a lot of fun with a box

I agree. My sister came up to play with us for my birthday weekend and we have had more fun with this set than any other set for limited. We were watching this video expecting him to gush about the gameplay (not talking about price) and we all gapped when he said it felt awkward. It was so fun!!!
@@dorsalfin22 I also drafted with my sister and other family, we had a blast. My four year old could not draft because he can't read but brought his gishath deck to the game play. My twelve year old opened a foil mana drain and non foil vampiric tutor in a single pack and kept them both. As he had saved up his pocket money to pay for a quarter of the box, I had no valid excuss to relieve him of them "It burns". My sister and I live interstate and this draft was a great excuses to get together and we had a lot of fun. Cracking this set as part of a draft and keeping your cards is worth it in my opinion, especially if you are a commander player and are looking or reprints or interesting commanders.
Just drafted this for hours with my step sister. We had a ton of fun and were both exhausted afterwards

I saw the three-pack at a local Walmart for $15, bought two because I've been meaning to get into Commander, then I found out people are selling these draft packs for OVER $23. Yikes.
I feel like WoTC products are either "OH MY GOD! THEY KILLED THE FORMAT1!1!1!" or "I'm not mad, but I'm not happy, either."
Eh, the commander decks are still being received pretty well, ESPECIALLY with the price drop.
I pulled a full art jeweled lotus on my 1 and only collector's pack that I bought😳, I only bought 1 cause their so much but I figured... then when I seen it I flipped lol

This set is actually really fun to draft. My family and myself had a fun time drafting it, but I knew the prices were going to tank when it actually released.
When the basic salary in a US state is three-four times higher than the basic salary in a EU country , 125$ per Box is way cheaper than 95€ ;)
After drafting the set on mtgo I do have to say it’s been shockingly fun. The games have been about an hour to 1:20 and there have been a lot of really cool interactions. Personal favorite play was a pirates deck that used coercive recruiter to take my Araumi, then used her to encore more pirates from the graveyard, stealing even more stuff from everyone and getting in for a huge swing.
Thanks for the information. I'm finding quickly in returning to magic, for collecting, buying singles is the most cost effective.
Hey professor, I pre-ordered 2 draft displays for 90€ each as a beginning player to start my commanders collection , only having 2 decks (Winota and recently build omnath loc ) so far and like 200 bulk cards. As a new player I want to say , don't buy this display for value or to draft for fun games with friends. I pulled 1 Vampiric Tutor in each display , which my friends told me I am lucky , I don't feel like it. I expected to pull a lot of new interesting commanders which could enhance the battlefield with new effects, even the commander format or give me some ideas to creat fun decks . I pulled 4 new legendary characters I would love to build a deck around out of 100+ ... The others are having similar effects +1/+1 to character or search library for smth ... I bought this display to inspire me to create new decks , and in some ways it fulfilled my expectations . Maybe I could build cheap decks for friends out of the easier to play legendaries as a Christmas gift . But in the end it's an below average set and the professor is always right when he says BUY SINGLE CARDS !

I bought a display to upgrade my cube, I got a Vampire Tutor, foil Oppression Agent and a Scroll Rack as my best pulls. So pretty happy with it!

I think every single video regarding sets or expansions review should start with the memo "Buy Singles!". In most cases, it saves a lot of money and headaches (just be careful with prices).
Halfway through the video and I'm happy we finally talk about the draft, he said the word "game" and an ad rolls. I feel like this is a symbol for what wizards has been up to.

Im not even going to bother buying these over priced packs, by the time I have wasted a couple hundred dollars on cards that are not even the ones I want, I could have waited a month, got them as singles for a fraction of the price. Jeweled Lotus, 3 weeks ago, $800-1000+ for a full art foiled, now $150-200, and its only been out a couple days.
I'm a new subscriber but the professor is already one of my favorite magic channels. I could honestly listen to this man talk about anything for 20 minutes at a time and never be bored

I normally place most of my box orders online due to pricing but I decided to look for a local LGS for CL. Found one that opened recently that was booming pre-COVID! They had a great staff and fair pricing. Might go there when events start to re-open.

One minute you're like "o don't buy during pre-release" then you're like " o buy boxes" and then back to "o just buy singles" when prices for that one 15 cent card skyrockets to $15+ dollars. Pokemon is fifteen thousand percent better because at least there your not breaking the bank. In magic it's $50 just for an Ulamog someone told you to get because he would be an excellent Unicron with his mill ability. Then fifteen different people ask to look at that deck of yours during a game only for them to recommend an expensive piece of cardboard saying "o this will be great instead of Fiendslayer Paladin." THAT' S ALL IT IS ISN'T IT. A GAME WITH CHEAP CARDBOARD PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO BUY AND SELL FOR TENS OR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. WELL IF THAT'S ALL IT IS....... THEN I AIN'T HAVING ONE BIT OF IT NO MORE. Pardon the long comment! Regarding pricing for the sealed product - not exclusively for Commander Legends, but rather generally speaking - It is important to recognize that you will likely pay a marked up price for most sealed products if you're buying from your LGS rather than online. Although the mark-up % does vary between which product you're buying, it is almost certain that you will pay 10-20% more on a sealed box (booster or collector) if you buy from your LGS rather than online/ebay. This really poses the question... at what % are you willing to pay to make sure you're supporting your LGS? The ZNR Collector box for example is sub-$200 now (around $190) online and my LGS's are selling it for $225-250 still (big difference - especially if you buy more than one). This precedent applies to commander Legends. So ask yourself - how much is it worth for you to pay a little more (or a lot more) to support the LGS rather than an online retailer. Tough question when your hard-earned $ is the considered factor. ** Please note that this is a general statement - there are times where I've personally paid less at an LGS for sealed product - likely due to the LGS not being privy to recent elevation on certain sets. Anyway, food for thought. And supporting LGS is important consideration.
I was skeptical on how it would play out, I thought it would just be okay draft with commanders. But this felt like a commander experience, kinda like the precons. I did a modo draft and man it was super fun, to be able to get that out of a couple packs is really impressive.
I preordered a box on Amazon for $108, after taxes. They've since delayed. Last time this happed, they canceled my order, then tried to sell me the same product with a 50% mark up. Shit's wack, yo. BRING BACK MSRP!

I don't think magic is worth it at all anymore. All my friends quitted and sold their collections and my lgs went bankrupt, like why even bother... I have like 7 grand worth of cardboard in some boxes that I won't ever get to sell in my country anymore as and after bulk, buy list prices and shipping fees to sell them off in the USA it's going to be less than $3000...
I'm swallowing this bullet and hopefully I choke and die on it.

I'm not a fan of Commander-built cards but these products are the best place to put them. Commander is the most popular format nowadays; WoTC can't just ignore it and I'd rather they put Commander cards in Commander decks than in standard.

I agree with you. This critics doesn't apply for everyone in my community this was of the best drafts and cracking packs in years and we'll continue doing so.
Wow, I had a very different experience with Commander Legends. I preorder every set (2 boxes of CMR), as my friends and I draft as a group for every set. After we draft, I cube the sets I enjoyed. I even preordered a Collector's box to get some bling. if you preorder, you easily avoid the markups... why wait so long if you aren't trying to make money or flip the cards? I agree the draft is slightly weird, as my group is not fully made up of EDH players. However, it was fun to get my group to see what EDH light was like and we had a blast (I picked up boxes on prerelease weekend). I am definitely cubing this after I trim down my 2 booster boxes.
I am sorry so many things seem to sour the Prof these days. MTG has always been luxury cardboard rectangles, and has been expensive since before I started playing during Revised. I get that everyone is so fixated on value and return on investment for some reason, but I really enjoyed drafting this with my friends. I just wish more of the MTG community enjoyed life. The negativity and sadness is just overwhelming during an already difficult time for many. MTG should be your escape, and if you can barely afford it or need to evaluate everything based on ROI... maybe find a different outlet. Enjoy life people and I hope y'all can find happiness soon!
Buying the singles isn't nearly as fun 🙃 you're totally right about it being the correct way to go though. For me, I really like the randomization of it. Sometimes the deck chooses you. Buy singles after the box 😎

I don't think so. The problem with Jeweled Lotus isn't so much that it is a broken card, but that what it does is not what we want Commander to be doing and what it represents is where Commander seems to be headed. In isolation, it's fine. But as a harbinger of where WotC is taking us, ugggghhhhhh.
this is my first time ever buying a box of something. I pre-ordered it as soon as the game store I order through started accepting pre-orders, and before there were any leaks or anything beyond the most vague previews. initially, I was gonna get this for when my friend from the navy comes to down with his fie and we could do a draft, but we then agreed that I'd sort of make a CML cube-ish thing and i'd just crack 'em... because honestly? I pre-ordered this set because I love commander and I just wanted to see what zaney stuff I'd crack and I'd be able to brew with.

I love this for draft and I love it for commander because it brought down the prices of certain cards.
Honestly I wish I could be excited for this product. But I loved edh for the fact I often saw such old and strange cards. And it didn't feel so much like an arms race. But I'm probably just being an old fogey.

I’d Recommend playing online. Magic Arena is there, but there’s also ways to play on plenty of other websites and through various programs if you’re looking for a less collection-restricted format.
Lets you get around having to gather in public places to play, if nothing else.
I would recommend untap.in, especially if you have a regular play group that you can convince to join you.

I opened a 4 rare pack including an etched foil as my 6th pack playing sealed and it still wasn't enough to break even on the price of a pack. I did find the limited environment interesting though
I bought 2 boxes and from all the commons and uncommons I built four "optimized" draft decks (max 4x one card) with partner commanders and alternative multicolor commander. They are great fun to play so far with my playgroup :) (got really lucky with rares and mythics too)
I really like that idea. Especially when having a super casual friend over, who maybe doesn’t have an optimized or more janky deck. Or as a board game type of idea!

the way color identity works quickly removed piper from useable. He would still net you colorless since color matters in deck construction. Since piper is not a set color, I could dub him green. while not running any green cards. Likewise i could be running him with sakashima, and call green, where my deck may be grixis.
Piper is a filed product and should not have been printed since it does not work.
When you make piper one of your commanders, the color you choose to be his color identity is added to your decks allowed colors.

Incorrect. Piper works to add whatever color identity you need for your deck. Your deck needs to conform to whatever color you choose for Piper, plus whatever the partner is (which could be a second Piper). It's not a good commander, but it fulfills its purpose as intended.
I was able to do a 4 player draft of this last night. We had a great time, monarch really helped push the flow of the game.

Commander Legends drafts have been a blast. Always enjoy innovations/variants to draft format and despite perceptions I think WOTC has been knocking limited out of the park for the last year or so. I do wish it was a bit more like EDH with card power but the games feel much more like EDH than just multiplayer limited.
Card Kingdom marked it up to $140 already!
WotC just do a 100% reprint sets, and commander precons, stop making cards for the format. I don't want to see another card like Jeweled lotus. leave cards that are obviously designed for commander out of standard.

@@ccggenius no because when you reprint cards that people want they buy it and it sells, do you remember core set 2021 because I do. Grim Tutor; Azusa, lost but seeking; Heroic Intervention; Cultivate; Solemn Simulacrum; Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. When you reprint garbage you get garbage sells.
Mitch from the commander's quarters has been begging for a Wayfarer's Bauble reprint. Another printing of Obliette would already be welcomed. There are over 30,000 cards to choose from and they make new ones like jeweled lotus or hullbreacher and reprint cards like pirate's cutlass.
They can easily just pick card that commander players actually need and want and reprint those and it would sell like fire.
I don't get Magic players... If new cards aren't powerful, we complain that they aren't worth getting. But if new cards _are_ powerful, then we complain that they're changing older formats. If the game stopped evolving--if there were no longer compelling reasons to get new cards--then the game would go out of business and we'd never get new cards again. Same with wanting cheap reprints but also wanting packs to be stuffed with expensive cards. There's no way for Wizards to satisfy these demands without closing the door on future profits.
Besides, if Commander Deck X is too inaccessible... there are a thousand other decks to choose from! That's the beauty of a large card pool. I come from Yugioh where the top decks are a few hundred dollars, but dozens of $20-50 decks can compete with them.

Why a B-? This is the first commander draft and should be an A+ at the least because everyone it's buying it and we have to continue buying more of this instead of Double Masters or shity standard boxes.
The grade that matters is your own. However, as to "why a B-" well, disagree with me is fine, but I did spend 17+ minutes explaining the why. Again, your grade is the one that counts though.
Yeah you are right. As commander player I saw this as a very nice box and everyone in my community also did. Hope we can see more of this commander draft booster boxes in the future.
Couple of my friends and I drafted this and as you said everything is subjected. We had a great time and found we created very balanced decks and nobody had to use a piper. Fun enough we are planing to do it again.
Just want to put this out there: While I totally agree with not buying things at crazy exorbitant prices, you ALSO made this same argument in your Jumpstart video. Don't pay higher than MSRP because the product was "unlimited print" and would go down once more product hit the streets.
Well, it's almost December, and we STILL haven't had any REAL restock for that set. I agree in principle, because I HATE scalpers and don't want people to get ripped off, but the reality is... we don't actually KNOW this product will see much more volume than what's already out there. WotC SAYING it's unlimited print doesn't ACTUALLY mean anything.
So... I don't have any good advice to go with this. It's just kinda bullshit, and you're all gonna have to make your own call. Continue trying to not get ripped off, but also... I honestly doubt there's gonna be any real restocking of this product. Jumpstart has taught me a hard lesson in this arena, although I probably should've already known better when Mystery Boosters failed ended up not getting further support, even though they INITIALLY stated they would get more product out there in time.
This is the era of no supply, my friends. Do what you will with that information :[
I've had a ton of run with the draft format. Monarch does a great job getting people to attack and pretty much everyone finds some synergy for their deck. I also haven't had issues with board stalls because of how good encore is.
I got my Box for 90$ and to day i got another one for 95$
I purchased a box solely to draft with friends as we often play a more casual form of commander on a regular basis so a bit of Derdoling is to be expected. I hope the draft experience is positive and really appreciate how you take a critical look at products with your years of experience playing the game and analyzing products
I got my pre-release box and got a jeweled lotus, opposition agent, commander plate, and foil etched Tymna - I couldn't have felt luckier.
I sold sold the lotus for "$75" and recooped half the booster box's value while keeping the rest.. and now I went and bought 4 of each of the legendaries I didn't get for 30 bucks (minus Sakashima).
Had I not got incredibly lucky and proactive to sell, I would have regretted it looking at the prices now.
Sadly my LGS was charging $150 per box for Commander Legends, but he was giving out both promo cards, and a normal promo pack. My GF and I drew enough to pay for our packs, and also got the cards we wanted at least, so suck it singles, I only had to spend $300 to get the $50 in cards I want!
Who else is watching this after they bought one?
I feel like an old fan already, thanks again Professor, and I think the analysis (in plural) are getting better, really deep and multi dimensional.
