    This was my first *new* laptop. I got it for college. All the previous computers that *I* owned (not family computers) were used - either from the late 70s/ early 80s computers or laptops that were several years old.
    That being said, I *did* use a butterfly keyboard ThinkPad for a while, and one of those old Compaq laptops which I tried (and failed) to install Linux on (it was harder back then).

    I had this apple mac . And I loved it so much. Unfortunately the logicboard got broken several times. In the end I commissioned someone to remove the harddrive. The rest is history. R.I.P. dear powerbook. It was perfect. DVD Burner, wifi, USB, modem, LAN cable, firewire, audio in and out, VGA adapter incl. Some parts of my. doctoral thesis were written by me and my beloved PowerBook. It is so sad.

    Back in 2011, I bought a white iBook G3 (snow), it had a similar smelling issue, but mine smelled like sweat, the smell was really strong, I tried cleaning it, I even dismounted the keyboard, but the smell remained there. After doing a quick research, I've found the smell was caused by an adhesive used in the keyboard, which because of the heating of the laptop by the time generates that smell, so many iBooks from the same generation had that issue.

    It’s unfortunate we never got G5 into laptops. I got G5 Quad now, and it is reasonably fast even by modern standards.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After Motorola dropped PowerPC, it wasn't worth IBM's time to constantly improve the G5 processor for consumer products, as Apple were the only company using it, and it was only selling in small numbers. Unlike the G4, the G5 was hastily adapted from IBM's server technology, which had very different requirements and attributes compared to a typical laptop or desktop processor. IBM still produce their 'Power' CPUs.

    • @NateEweighty
      @NateEweighty 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding to what the other guy said- The first 970 (G5) was just a single-core POWER4 with AltiVec bolted on. It wasn't even fully compliant with the PowerPC standard (was missing some instructions), which is part of why you couldn't run OS9 on one.
      Really nice CPU for the time, but I don't think Apple put a lot of thought into picking it as their 5th generation CPU. It was more of a last minute, do-or-die thing after Motorola shit the bed on a 74xx replacement.
      The whole thing about it being a "housefire", and too hot to ever put in laptops, was always pretty comical to me - it was a server CPU! You never saw a G5 Powerbook for the same reason you never saw a Xeon Macbook - that's not what they were for!

      Honestly, even core 2 duos are still useful as a secondary PC. I have an 09 iMac with a core 2 duo, it's basically a 2008 computer but it runs windows 10 at decent speeds and is fun to mess around with. I kind of regret buying it though cause there isn't much use for it. I'd say only for very basic things.

    TenFourFox is still supported, but it works better on a G5 than a G3 or G4. Another problem is that all of the old plugins, like Flash, are deprecated and this limits functionality. I used it successfully on a dual G5 at my old job from 2009-15, but a dual G5 is much faster than this 1.33 GHz G4.

    Between this and the 2003 Dell inspiron 8500, which do you think held up better over time? I remember on my oldest laptop, the Toshiba Satellite with Windows 98 from 1998, I managed to get a wifi card going on it and actually, the Microsoft Chat program in Windows 98 still works today as in it will still pull up hundreds of chat rooms even though it's over 20 years old. Facebook however, using opera, it only loaded about 30% of the web page and stopped, could be because only 96 mb of ram with a 266 mhz Pentium cpu.

    I realize that this is a year old video, but, for the record, if you download and install Leopard WebKit, you will be able to watch TH-cam. The other option is TebFiveTube. What you have here is much more capable than you think.

    • @danw1955
      @danw1955 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, you can get 'TenFourFox' for PPC (make sure you grab the right version for your CPU), and install the stripped down ffmpeg decoder for H.264 playback (only for 1.25ghz and faster CPU's) This in conjunction with the Leopard Webkit should make it a lot easier to get decent playback on a G4 or G5 Powerbook. 😉

  • @another3997
    @another3997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can't really expect old technology to cope with new standards that simply didn't exist when it was manufactured. Hardware standards, storage requirements, the WWW, TH-cam, movie formats, document formats... they change over time. But old tech will still run old software as well as it did back then. Just replacing the hdd will make it faster.

    Sucks that these PPC Macs don’t commonly have supported GPUs. GPUs supporting QE/CI, some supported QE and no core image so it ran really slow. Core Image is arguable important as Quartz Extreme. I think some of these had either one or the other? I know it’s common to see Core Image just software accelerated or not accelerated at all. I believe QuartzGL can be enabled on these machines to give it a slight performance boost and removing the frame limit afaik, eMacs suffer with removing the frame limit for some reason, probably refresh rate related? eMacs therefore have to have that FPS cap that macOS has.

    • @nortonhearsajew5324
      @nortonhearsajew5324 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you also have to think that this is a early 2000’s model between 2001-2006 I’m pretty sure. Technology was just at its evolution point. In the “modern” world we are many generations ahead when it comes to electronics.

    "Are you telling me this can edit HD video but can't handle a 480p video?". Well, newsflash: it's one thing to playback video from hard drive or a DVD and another thing entirely to stream video through youtube.. i thought that was common knowledge amongst "youtubers". So yes, it's can "handle" 480p video, just not in the form you want it to. I used to own a powermac G4/1.25 with 2gigs of memory running Morphos that could playback 1080p almost smoothly, but couldn't really stream more than 240p with decent speed from youtube.

    • @NateEweighty
      @NateEweighty 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because after Google bought TH-cam, they transitioned to their own compression codec (VP8/VP9) and ditched h.264, which PPC had hardware acceleration for. Back when YT was a Flash/h.264 site and not an HTML5/VP9 site, you would watch 1080p videos on a G5, and 720p on a dual cpu G4. There are actually Firefox extensions that will force h.264 playback, but I've never been successful in getting them to work with TenFourFox.. Most of the time when you see PowerPC people watching TH-cam in TFF or Webkit, they've got extensions and userscripts out the wazoo, as well as a laundry list of about:config tweaks

When you have to buy and maintain hundreds, if not thousands of them, a few extra $ or £ on each machine soon mounts up. The fact that they even provide laptops for use by students is amazing... I know from experience that students aren't the most careful of people. Laptops didn't even exist when I was at school. 😁

    you have no idea, every modern computer is way more easy and you have no Idea what you are talking about. The DVD Player was installed by an update before 10.5 (leopard) on DVD came out. The things you deleted were not critical by BSD, because it is nothing than a BSD with an interface. On Dos and Windows you can delete what you want. It's nothing special with a modern apple.

    TH-cam is trash and it's slow on pretty much any OS other than the big 4, Windows, Mac OS, Linux and BSD.

    I am writing this comment on a Powerbook G4 and it's a pain to use TH-cam with.
