    Sanji's kick at Luffy is such an important aspect to his character despite the focus being on Luffy/Usopp. He is in fear of his "family" falling apart in front of his eyes.

      @Pain Ville gaming It's also called character development. People are always so quick to say Sanji is a joke for his simping. But he is playing the true middle man to this situation. He understands and sympathizes with Usopp but also understands the logical side of the argument and safety for the crew with a new ship.
      He is shook at Luffy almost blurting out something he'd regret. This shows how much he loves the whole crew, not just the ladies.

    This conversation is one of the realest moments in this show, and perhaps anime. It's filled with Usopp's insecurities that have been building up for the entire series and now projected onto the Merry, and at the same time, it's one of Luffy's first moments making a hard decision as a captain. Up to this point, all he's done as a captain is pointing them to the next island, and letting others give out orders on a day-to-day basis (like Nami), so now that he's resolved himself, he has to stick by the decision and defend it no matter what. People say that One Piece is too long, but the slow burn of character development bears such amazing fruits sometimes

  • @maxacorn
    @maxacorn ปีที่แล้ว +258

    this scene is important because this is the first time that luffy actually has to be captain. he was captain just in name only, hence why ussop got so heated when he started acting like one. this is the first real judgement call luffy has had to make since he started out. and as you can see, it's not an easy one.

    To me, one of the best things about One Piece, is that the Characters carry the Plot and not the other way around.
    Makes things like the progress of arcs and characters feel so real. Like, the characters have so much depth to them.
    I adore it and in my opinion it's done exceedingly well in this arc.

    "Ships and human are different" - Damn!!
    There are two reasons that Usopp escalated this
    1. He had an inkling that the above statement might be wrong.
    2. He saw something of himself in Merry. He saw himself as as "weak" and vulnerable as Merry was. Him getting rolled over by some random goons just the point that he might be too weak to belong in this crew. If Luffy was willing to part with Merry when Merry was too weak to continue, maybe he would do the same to Usopp at some later stage. His insecurities play a role in this too.
    Also, in the beginning, Luffy was obviously trying to spare Usopp's feelings by hiding the truth behind his decision and making light of losing the 200 mil.
    By the way, the way this discussion >> argument >> battle >> parting of the ways is just masterful writing by Oda.

      Actually ussop knew merry wont continue. He was stuoid and heart broken. But luffy was stupid as if merry is dissposable. Ussopp said "i wont let you leave merry in a place like this" hence he was right atleast make it decent for merry dont leave her at a ship wreck place. Also luffy went out of line that escalted everything. He was about to ask ussopp to leave until sanji kicked him. He made ussopp dissopasble like merry. To be ionest ussopp shouldnt be the one apologizing to luffy at the end it was luffy who should be apologizing to ussopp cause he literaly was gonna kicke ussopp out of the crew and yet when needed ussopp still helped them.

  • @rjai5003
    @rjai5003 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Oda had this fight planned from when Usopp first joined the crew. There are so many factors that went into it that make it sad like the fact that Usopp and Luffy were so close before the fight, but it doesn’t feel forced or out of character for them to act the way they did. Not only does Usopp have a personal connection with the Merry, but it also ties into him feeling inadequate next to his stronger crew mates. Meanwhile, Luffy has to be a good captain and put the others’ safety first, but he’s still inexperienced and made mistakes while handling the situation. Even the other characters’ reactions made sense for who they were

    • @Allen-qs2xr
      @Allen-qs2xr ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Manga-wise, Usopp was the only one of the original 5 to not get his "The Xth Person" chapter (Zoro, Nami, Sanji got theirs). Oda definitely planned it.

    3:13 I love the look on Luffy’s face. He’s being as serious as he can,his smile talk is all a facade😢. And how they fight brings such an uneasiness to the environment,you don’t see it like crewmates fighting but rather family fighting amongst them and it’s heartbreaking. Usopp saying why are you acting all-captain like all of a sudden is just how he perceives Luffy, not a captain but a friend just because it’s Luffy’s nature to be simple and friendly. Only Zoro knows that Luffy indeed is captain first, friend later

    Yeah this was hard to watch but honestly out of all the crew Usopp was the one most likely to wind up in this situation. He's not a big fighter like the monster Trio and doesn't have an important non combat role like Chopper or Nami so feeling "We have our ship thanks to me thats how I contribute" is totally understandable, so losing Merry is kind of like losing his purpose with the crew, and yes I know they all do love Merry.

    Usopp states "look at you, finally acting captain like?"
    Very disrespectful and basically shows us that usopp was viewing him and luffys relationship as just friends, when in reality they all NEED to have respect for Luffy as the captain in order to survive.

    • @13Yeared
      @13Yeared ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be fair, virtually everyone didn't view Luffy as a captain until this arc except maybe Zoro, and even he wavered sometimes like during Whiskey Peak. It's why this arc is so necessary, because Luffy never had to be a proper captain. They were just a bunch of friends goofing off.

    Luffy is deeper than he seems on the surface. it might not make sense at first glance, but he understands how Usopp feels and knows how much he cares about the Merry. He also knows that the Merry is doomed, but nothing he says to usopp will change his mind. he's not leaving Usopp behind, Usopp is leaving himself behind and Luffy respects his decision. He's being responsible, knowing that the shipwright understands this better than he does. None of them, Luffy included, wants this to happen, but they understand that it's unavoidable and are trying to get through it as best they can.

    Wait, I’m rewatching the episode now and the scene where Nami begs Luffy to stop Usopp from leaving, the shot after where the entire crew are standing on opposite sides of the room; Sanji, Nami and Chopper on one and then you have Luffy and Zoro on the other clearly states their difference in the way they view this whole situation. Zoro being the man he is, realizes that Usopp cannot be reasoned with and how loyal he (Zoro) is, he won’t argue with any decision that Luffy makes so he’s standing by his side. While the other three are desperate to keep Usopp from leaving and it’s understandable why. But Luffy was right; You don’t like a decision i make you can just leave. Usopp chose Luffy as his captain and must trust him in the decisions Luffy makes for the crew.

    It all started because of bad communication and a lack of empathy which Luffy of course would struggle with as he really isn't the type of person to do thing delicately. First he tries to hide the reason why he is replacing the merry which feeds into usopps insecurity and attatchment and screams for luffy to tell the real reason. They get heated, usopp starts denying and getting angry at the shipwrights and calling them liars. Of course Luffy says something he will come to regret. Sanji kicked him too late. Usopp was basically told to get the fuck out. I feel Usopp is the one in the wrong though. Despite that last part, Luffy explained everything. Why he was doing this. The ship was unfixable and he was going to get a new one. Saying that this was a hard choice and Usopp was just being plain unreasonable. Still it sucks to see them this way
    It's so sad and so realistic. People in real life often get mad before they think. Mad and sad that they can't really rationalize properly. This scene hits way too hard.

    Luffy's people skills leave much to be desired. Unfortunately, I don't think the outcome would've been different even if he had been tactful.

    Depressing Tip: Watch Luffy's expression throughout the rest of this arc... it'll hurt when you realize.

    while usopp has issues and luffy is doing his best in hiding his sadness with his merriment, i do still think that if luffy should have started first with merry no longer able to be repaired then followed up with the conclusion.
    if usopp did not believe that and became emotional, i do think that it is all on him (seeing though usopp still did not comprehend it after a few minutes of the heated argument... he was dragging the issue and becoming emotional- though understandable, still illogical for him. )
    but since this did not happen then... therefore, i think this is a misunderstanding between the two tbh.
    personally, if i was there and was a part of the crew, id step in and explain both sides... (even though id be like robin mostly normally, being the listener.

      I think Luffy knew that no matter how he worded, phrased it it would still hurt Usopp. And he didn’t want to cause him any further pain on top of already feeling like a failure. I just don’t think he expected it to escalate to such a degree. I think he believed their friendship was stronger than that. That Usopp would understand and that it would be best for everyone.

    I'll be honest these are the only one piece episodes I don't look forward to in this arc, they're just so heart-wrenchingly sad but in a way that makes you feel kind of gross.

      Ussopp was still hurting. Techinically luffy kicked him out of the crew. Hence sanji kicked luffy. And to be honest i just think he just want a decent burial for mery. Not just leave her there alone. He was hard on chopper cause he doesnt want chopper to take sides he still care for them he just felt really lost
