  • The Cure - Robert Smith.
A quick overview of the guitars of Robert Smith 1978-89 used on tour.
The 'narration' was unscripted- I may well have got some of the model numbers wrong or whatever and/or left something out - let me know, I can include them in part 2!)
This vid will not go into too much detail about the nature of the guitars, as in the pick ups , age purchase point and all that. It is just a quick look at the classics.
I have not included the many guitars that have appeared on TV, vids, etc etc. (Pearl's Red Epi, Black Strats, A red Ibanez, an Ovation Acoustic used with the Banshees etc)
    Part 2 to follow....

For me the quintessential RS guitars are the jazzmaster and the fender bass vi. The latter especially gives the cure a unique sound. Although I do love the in orange fender telecaster, that concert had a great tone quality to it. Although as you say in the video, for Robert it was only used briefly, never to be seen again. ♥️

Hello there-I could not agree more, they are the two!- also the Roland JC amps in the early era with the Jazzmaster gave a certain sound- and yes, the tone of 'Orange' was unique. The drums are a massive sound as well- upfront! Thanks for commenting. Cheers.

The olympic white jazzmaster with the top 20 pickup will always be the best at least to me especially considering it was used during the early days (Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography etc) when there was just Robert, Lol and Simon (and Matthieu and Michael but there were only on one album respectively) which is my favourite era of The Cure

Hello there. Yes, a very special guitar and a very special era- and of course the roland jazz chorus amp in those days. Very much it’s own sound. Cheers.

Absolutely excellent video! My only comment is that I was in the front row at the Birmingham NEC in 88 and I was absolutely mesmerised with the opening track which was The Kiss with Robert Smith's searing soloing on his black SG - I just wish you'd given a tiny bit more time for this as for me it was one of the greatest experiences of seeing a guitar hero ever :)

I would love one of these on Gallup if you’re as clued up on him as you are Robert. I’m a bass player and a massive Cure fan, loved the detail in the vid!

Hello Barry- Well, there is food for thought! No doubt Mr Gallup is a legend although he ignored me the other day when I said hello! ( I rehearse in the same studio) He certainly has had phases with various basses over the years- Musicman, Fender P, Rics and many others! mmm....Thanks for your nice comments on the vid. Watch this space! Cheers.

I love how the Telecaster worked for Robert and the band. Just goes to show how
versatile a guitar it is. I didn't realize he'd played an SG for a bit! Thankfully that was brief! :)

Hi and thanks for making & uploading this video!🙂 If you don't mind, I would like to address a few things that are mentioned in your video that are in my humble opinion not 100% correct: 1. The cheap Japanese guitar (the infamous 'Woolworths Top Twenty') that Smith used to record the band's first singles and parts of the 'Three Imaginary Boys' album is *not* a Teisco, but it was actually made by *Kawai* ; 2. At 00:49 you mentioned "Here's the Jaguar stripped down..." - Robert Smith never used a Fender Jaguar, and this is actually one of Smith's two Jazzmasters (yes, he definitely had *two* different Jazzmasters from the early 60s, probably bought around the same time in 1979) that he had stripped, before it got an Olympic White finish; 3. The 'Bass VI' from the late 60s or early 70s was acquired by Smith in 1980 (so not in 1981) & he started using it live that year, as quite a few photos of live performances of The Cure from 1980 clearly show; 4. At the 01:33 mark there are 4 different guitars shown that Smith used, and the Vox guitar that can be seen here is a 'Mark VI Special' that was probably made in 1967; Cheers, and keep up the good work! 🙂

Really cool video here. I'm a big fan of music gear videos, especially on bands I like. If memory ssrves, I can remember a few photos where Robert is seen playing what appears to be a tobacco burst Gibson Firebird or (most likely) a Firebird-like copy (I think I remember the headstock being different to the traditional GF one) back in the very early days of The Cure, maybe even Easy Cure or Malice. You can see him playing it during the live intro bit at the beginning of the _'Staring At The Sea'_ video compilation.

Also around 87 Robert probably used a Guild Starfire guitar. At least it can be seen in the Catch video. However it could be Pearl's. Also I'm not aware about him using it live or on the album

@@SecondhandKidMusic yeah, sometimes it's really confusing. Pearl and Perry are also an interesting topic by the way. There's really very little (if any) information about their guitars and amps. As well as information about band's amps in general. Mostly people just talk about JC-120, but I'm pretty sure since the Head on The Door The Cure have been using something else

    • @SecondhandKidMusic
      @SecondhandKidMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@liluthetemperance yes- the classic Roland JC- it was actually the bigger JC 160 to start with (all good if you have roadies- I have a JC 90 and a JC 22!) but, yes, many amps since and as you say - mixed info .I think a change to Peavy was made in 83 ish but who knows what in the studio. Pearl has used many over the years and would be a good topic- Perry also, perhaps as a 'subplot' if nothing else to see which guitars he 'borrowed' off RS and turned upside down! Cheers.
