I love how far the two of you have come. Amber came on the scene and taught Jay how to appreciate REAL music. At that point, Jay had only loved rap and didn't know how to Listen to music. Jay's ear had no sophistication because it had lacked listening to melodies. Amber lead him by the hand and made him actually listen to the music. Jay, on the other hand, gave Amber confidence. My wife worked for the agency that handled Freda Payne and met her once. Wife said that not only was she a nice and friendly... but also one of the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen. Great voice.... gorgeous. What more could you ask for?
We lost an amazing singer named Angela Bofill a couple of weeks ago. She was 70, and her style was a cross between jazz and pop. Her voice was heavenly. "I Try", "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", and "Under the Moon and Over the Sky" are some of her best songs. RIP Angela Bofill.🌹

That joy often gives me a great start to my day.

If it has shades of the Motown sound, it does. Holland Dozier Holland wrote produced and arranged this. Big hit in 1970 peaking at #2. Still love it after 54 years!
Freda was born in Detroit and grew up there and had Holland-Dozier-Holland as friends, but somehow missed signing up with Motown. Instead, she moved to New York in 1963 and did some acting, which continued for many years, in addition to her records. Her other successful hit was Bring the Boys Home (1971), an anti-Vietnam War song. Her famous songwriter friends had left Motown and recruited her for a new label, Impulse, and wrote for her. It was with Impulse that she had her greatest success. Band of Gold was in 1970. Her sister was a replacement singer in the Supremes.
I really liked this song when it came out while I was growing up. Then after TH-cam, I saw just what a beautiful woman Freda Payne truly is! I sure missed out!
Another great reaction. Love this song. If i'm being completely honest when I'm listening to the 70s music station every song that comes on I say that I love it and it's one of my favorites. 😂 Best decade of music.
This is my favorite song by Freda Payne! It is definitely on my playlist! I love “Bring The Boys Home” as well! She is also an actress. Living Single! Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps! Her sister is Sherrie Payne who was a singer with the SUPREMES! She was married to Gregory Abbott who sings “Shake You Down”. What a talent and she is beautiful as well! Great request and reaction from Jay and Amber! 😎❤️👍🏽

And so many more.❤❤
I had this album as a teenager. The song just attracted me, even though liked harder rock and roll. This song literally blew up the radio in the Pop and the Soul charts back then.
I loved this song and it still sounds great. So sad Angela Bofill died. Didn't know that until I read a comment below. I too can't recommend enough "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" and "Over the Moon and Under the Sky". Both from her album Angie. I saw her at the Roxy back in the day. RIP sweet Angela
One of my favorite songs! The opposition you describe between the music and the lyrics is part of the song's greatness-it's about the longing for that happy, complete love.
Right on, Jay! As Amber agreed, some Minnie Ripperton and Diana Ross. I always liked this song as a young person but you both pointed out something I never thought of--that it has an upbeat tempo with downbeat lyrics. Interesting! Great reaction!! 💕💕
It's funny you mentioned hanging out on the beach. As soon as the song came in it took right to hanging out on Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn. Had our radio, laying back on our towel and this song coming. Got us moving. It was a big hit back then. Never thought about the lyrics, just her voice, music.
Freda only had one huge hit and this was it. I recommend checking out a couple other one hit wonders from the era: Sylvia’s Pillow Talk and Carol Douglas’ Doctors Orders
You guys picked a good one today Freda Payne her song band of Gold. This one here was a huge hit. She had a couple of others too. She started out in a van called "Invictus"
Freda Payne is a great vocalist, other tracks to check out by her are: "Bring The Boys Home", "Deeper and Deeper", "I Wanna See You Soon" with 'Tavares'. Freda's younger sister, Scherrie Payne, was in the Motown group 'The Supremes'. In 2023 'The Women Songwriters Hall of Fame' gave her a 'Lifetime Achievement and Legacy Award', she's also in 'The Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame'.
Jay is right on the money here. Upbeat sound that defies the lyrics. This song ushered in a catchy soul/funk sound that was so prevalent in the early 1970s.This could easily be on a compilation album with the Jackson 5 songs. This would carry through to 1971 with “Want Adds” by The Honey Cone, and “Mr. Big Stuff” by Jean Knight. Interestingly, Freda is Sherrie Payne’s sister. Scherrie replaced Diana Ross when she left the Supremes. It is all so connected! The Payne family hails from Detroit, so there you have it!
I'm always amazed that there's still music out there that you haven't reacted to. Having artists on in person to share the history is fantastic. Pure genius.
Thank you I suggested this song twice so thanks for reacting to it. As a musician playing weddings people would request this song not realizing it is about a honeymoon night gone bad err limp.
Freda Payne's 'Band of Gold' is part of the soundtrack of my youth, my being 12 when it came out. Wore out the 45 on my record player, the whole nine yards. Not a lot of fellow fans of the genre in my Appalachian rural community, where the options were 'both kinds of music' as _The Blues Brothers_ taught us (Country _and_ Western), plus Flatt and Scruggs-style Bluegrass, and Top 40 Pop late at night if the FM skip signal from more populated areas was cooperating. My cousin from central Ohio turned me on to BoG, along with several other selections that earned me some strange looks from my peers. Still, hearing the old melody sure brings back a flood of nostalgia! Thank you!
This was my absolute favorite song when I was 12 years old back in 1971! I knew all the words and it was fun to dance around to. At 12 I didn't actually think about what the lyrics meant. 😂
Me too, I turned 11 in 1971 and the only thing I got is that she was lonely and alone at the time. Now hearing that her groom left her alone right after getting married maybe he had different reasons for marrying her, it was not love or even lust.
Freda is currently touring a stage show where she portrays the great Ella Fitzgerald. She’s in her 80s, singing incredibly well, and onstage practically the whole time! This is an amazing woman whose career was chopped up when she dared to ask Berry Gordy to see the books! So glad she never stopped being a talented class act!
This song was a number 2 hit the very month I started my working career here in Sydney in January 1971. I loved her voice, that funky intro and that driving beat - yet she followed up with only one very minor hit (Deeper and Deeper) 6 months later and we never heard of her again.
One of those songs where you KNOW the lyrics were written first, and the music added afterwards - based on what was popular at that time. This was No1 for ages back in the '70's and you couldn't go to a disco without this being played multiple times. It harkens back to the 'Supremes' in style and it was just too popular for me, but when you lsten to it years on, it is a 'banger' - hated it back then, love it now! :)
This was one of my faves Soul tracks as a child coming up in the 1970s. The way FP delivered it with such emotive passion just made me feel some kind of way. Much respect to you Ms. Payne.
Takes me right back to my junior school years ..this and the song "A walking miracle"..junior school discos and my eldest sister listening to all these songs .❤UK
This is such a great song. My dad was a huge Motown fan so I was brought up listening to this sort of music. I'm 54 now and this takes me back to being a little boy!!
The most deceiving thing about this song is that Freda Payne is so beautiful I will never believe a man would do this to her. Love this song. Thanks for playing it.
The followup to "Band" was "Bring the Boys Home" which was a poignant plea for the military men during the Vietnam War era to come home safely. It too, is worth a listen, not only for her vocal ability but to feel a little of the angst that many felt when their loved ones were fighting a terrible war. Freda's younger sister was a member of a later (73-77) incarnation of the Supremes.
OMG I can tell you the first time I heard this song. I was on my way to Sea world CA on a YMCA trip in summer time when school was out . Yes it was the 60s. And I was 9 yrs old. I loved it the first time I heard it...❤

And so many more.❤❤
I had this album as a teenager. The song just attracted me, even though liked harder rock and roll. This song literally blew up the radio in the Pop and the Soul charts back then.
One of the all time great "sounds happy but is actually sad" songs!
Omgosh! I remember this! 70’s. We had so many great singers then. I can’t remember. We all knew the words though. Lol
Wow! I can't believe you have not heard this song until now. Ton's of great songs from the 50's, 60's & 70's that you are most likely missing out on.
Oh goodness…what memories this song brings to me of a simpler time. ❤️
You look great, Amber. And this song is one I've always loved, and you don't hear enough about her!
Very impressed that Jordan picked up on the lyrics. You are growing, Jordan. Love It!
Freda Payne also did a song called "Bring the Boys Home" an anthem for the Vietnam War, it is incredibly emotional, heartfelt and soulful.
Freda only had one huge hit and this was it. I recommend checking out a couple other one hit wonders from the era: Sylvia’s Pillow Talk and Carol Douglas’ Doctors Orders
PS The Sylvia with Pillow Talk is NOT the same Sylvia you listened to with Nobody!
Always liked this song. I probably heard this in the car when I was a kid. I always felt sorry for the abandoned newlywed. 😢
@bobslyvester. I was 9 when it came out, and I just assumed they had gotten into an argument, and that was the reason they slept in seperate rooms. 😅
You guys picked a good one today Freda Payne her song band of Gold. This one here was a huge hit. She had a couple of others too. She started out in a van called "Invictus"
I have always loved this song! Beautiful lady, beautiful voice.
I have never gotten tired of this song!
Wow Freda Payne I listen to this song alot know the word singing too it
Freda Payne is a great vocalist, other tracks to check out by her are:
"Bring The Boys Home",
"Deeper and Deeper",
"I Wanna See You Soon" with 'Tavares'.
Another factor that made this good was the orchestral like backing. A full song in all ways. Remember so well when it came out.
A song I liked but never knew the artist, many thanks.
This was one of my favorite songs back in the day. Love it.
She is an actress? I need to find something she is in.
I know I never heard of her being an actress.
Thank you!
Oh man, this was a favourite of this young Mod in Scotland in the early 1980s. Still is a cracking tune.
One of my all time favorite songs, still got the 45! it was probably the biggest song of the year when it came out
This was my absolute favorite song when I was 12 years old back in 1971!
I was 13, and had no idea the song was about impotence, until decades later.
Great song! Her voice is haunting to me.
Beautiful voice. I loved this song as a teen.
Her other great song is " Bring The Boys Home ". She's always been a very classy lady.
Deeper And Deeper is another great one.
I had forgotten about this one.
@@scotthughes2914 Yes indeed.
@@johnhegarty1761 A great song.
Sweet song! Remember on the radio when I was a kid! Thank You!
This song was a number 2 hit the very month I started my working career here in Sydney in January 1971. I loved her voice, that funky intro and that driving beat - yet she followed up with only one very minor hit (Deeper and Deeper) 6 months later and we never heard of her again.
I loved this song back in the 70's!
Payne.
13 when this came out. It’s wonderful how songs can bring back memories and feelings.
Freda Payne was, and still is, a Beautiful Woman!
