This song is from a time when us teenagers listened to all kinds of music on one radio station!! Such great times! Thanks for bringing back my teenage years! Awesome voice and great song! We all loved this song!❤️
Oh, you’ve just taken me back to early 70s and 16 year old me dancing with my friends at the youth club! Platform shoes & Levi’s . Ah! Happy memories!.
This song a think broke my radio back then, it was all over AM radio all day long. There were so many great songs that year but I’m sure this made the top ten year end charts. It was such a huge it.
This is one of my favorite songs that I have loved since it first came out. It is an irresistible pop/soul/disco tune. Yes, the lyrics are at odds with the tone of the song -- counterpoint. Her husband walked out on her on her wedding night, but you've not saddened because the tune is so catchy and upbeat. Doesn't it make you want to get up and dance (I did)!
There is some mystery to this song. Some people think it is about an impotent man, while others think it is about a frigid woman. In an interview with Lamont Dozier, who co-wrote the song, he explained: "The story was, the girl found out this guy was not all there. He had his own feelings about giving his all. He wanted to love this girl, he married the girl, but he couldn't perform on his wedding night because he had other issues about his sexuality. I'll put it that way."
I've heard all of the mythical storylines as well; but never heard that Lamont Dozier (RIP) actually confirmed one of the storylines. I ask you: From which interview was this spoken? Considering Stonewall occurred in 1969, and "Bank of Gold" came out in 1970, there is something peculiar about the time line, and the events of the world at that time
THAT is a beautiful song! I adore the power of her voice. I have the original vinyl press of that particular album at the record shop I work at. It’s a glorious listen for sure! Nice choice, you both! 👏🏽👏🏽💜
Always played at family weddings back in the 1970's when I was a kid. Could look round the room for the women who where scowling and the ones that where dancing! Lol!
This song is talking about a young couple on their honeymoon night. He walked out of the room because he couldn’t seal the deal. And now she’s waiting for him to come back and love her like he “tried before.”
At the time, I was 9. I just thought it was about a newlywed couple that got into an argument, so he decided to get his own hotel room... Just that simple.
You should give a listen to a couple of Cornelius Brothers songs: Treat Her Like A Lady; It’s Too Late To Turn Back Now. Along with Freda Payne’s ‘Band Of Gold’ (and many other great songs of the early 70’s) they were some of our favorite songs to roller skate to on Friday or Saturday nights. Those times were GREAT!
The first song I remember by title and artist, as a young boy. I was 7 and watched Freda perform this song on Soul Train. Such a pretty sound, and a pretty lady...
I was 9 when it came out, and I just thought it was about a newlywed couple that got into an argument. Therefore, he had to get his own room since there was no couch to sleep on. 😀
Lead guitar (not the sitar) is Ray Parker Jr of "Ghostbuster theme song" fame. Also, Freda's backup singers are Telma Hopkins and Joyce Wilson: "Dawn" of Tony Orlando and Dawn fame.
I remember listening to this song and many many others on the radio WLS - Chicago, (am radio) in north central, WI. Sometimes the station wouldn’t come in decent because it might be cloudy or raining or snowing out. lol
Thanks guys. Great reaction. This song was written by the Motown giants Holland-Dozier-Holland under the pseudonym Edythe Wayne after they left Motown. Freda Payne does a super job on this. Keep doing what you do.
Great reaction, thank you. I loved this song. There wasn’t as much emphasis of genre at the time of this song, and it was played on a variety of stations. You might like “Fairytale” by the Pointer Sisters, too. Lots of country fans did not know who the Pointer Sisters were but loved that song.
Freda's label, Invictus was formed by ex-Motown songwriting hitmakers Holland-Dozier-Holland, with house band The Funk Brothers playing on it. Gordy was SO retarded not renewing HDH's contract-- Even more so when he tried to sue them for "exploiting the Motown sound" (He lost in court, but made sure he got the Funk Brothers under contract with a clause they only play for his label quickly afterwards ) Dunno why Payne didn't have more hits with a voice like that!!
When I was 8 I moved into Camelot. All my neighbors were black. And I’m incredibly glad. I’d hear these songs AT MY FRIENDS HOMES helping do their chores so we could go outside.
Memory memories such lovely memories one comment about the Five Heartbeats we're really the Dells the singing group back in the day they had a hit song oh what a night❤
A big hit song from 1970. Loved it back then still do. Unfortunately this is the only song I remember by her, very good voice. 1970 was a great yr for music.
you didnt pay full attention to the words. "but that night on our honeymoon, we stayed in separate rooms". "i wait in the darkness of my lonely room, filled with sadness, filled with gloom. hoping soon that you walk back through that door and love me, like you tried before." i hear that as they waited until they were married and that night he couldnt perform. and so he left her. read into that what you will........... i used to skate to this song in the 70's. i loved the beat and the music, the words didnt mean anything to me back then as a young kid !
This was a classic and takes me back. It represents a period in time for so many people!💖
This song is from a time when us teenagers listened to all kinds of music on one radio station!! Such great times! Thanks for bringing back my teenage years! Awesome voice and great song! We all loved this song!❤️
💕 Love this song. It was the First 45 record my Father ever bought me. I still have it till today. 🥰 🎶
This song was #1 in Toronto (1050 CHUM AM) on my 10th birthday (June 28, 1970) and I bought the ‘45 and wore it out ❤
I had it too. I was 9, and the 45 label was blue with the word Invictus on it. 😊
I’ve always liked this song since I was a kid decades ago. She has a beautiful voice and you can hear the anguish and sadness when she sings.
Oh, you’ve just taken me back to early 70s and 16 year old me dancing with my friends at the youth club! Platform shoes & Levi’s . Ah! Happy memories!.
I was in my early 20s. Great times for sure

Freda had a searingly soaring voice… Exquisite!
"May,I have this dance"(Class of 71)

Nice choice, you both! 👏🏽👏🏽💜
I love this song and her voice.
Poor guy couldn't get it up on his wedding night is what this song boils down to. Great vocals, this song is a great groove!!!
They should play it during Cialis commercials. 😊
Me and my then to be wife, in 1970 used to love this song, and we got married, and the marriage lasted, thats good.
One of my all time favorites!
A true classic..."Bring the boys home" is another great one by her.
Asia & BJ, you’ll love her "Bring the Boys Home" !!
This was the Motown sound. Freda’s vocals were perfect. So melodic , so clear. This is an all time classic.

Poor guy - so the band of gold is a cock ring?!
He had to get his own room since there was no couch for him to sleep on.
It brings a new meaning to me since my husband has passed.
She had a timeless look and a golden voice.
Omg. I remember when this came out, listening to it on my portable AM radio. Rats. I'm older than dirt😢😊
Not at all ashamed to admit that this is my karaoke song. All love ❤️❤️❤️
The five heartbeats was based on the music group THE DELLS ! THE DELLS did all
the singing in the movie !!;;
It's funny, Lol😊 that she thought this was a real group.
Omg I listened to this 1000 times over the years!!
I was a kid when this was released and I didn’t understand what it meant at the time but it’s just one of those songs that you CAN NOT turn off.
At the time, I was 9. I just thought it was about a newlywed couple that got into an argument, so he decided to get his own hotel room... Just that simple.
This song has it all ❤ still sounds fresh. Love that old school production. Strings, guitars, bass her vocal with back ground singers 👏

The only problem with this song, it's too short!! ❤

I LOVED dancing to this song !! I miss the great old days !!❤❤
its a shame they dont make music like this anymore from a simpler time when you could actually listen to and enjoy the lyrics.
I remember listening to this song and many many others on the radio WLS - Chicago, (am radio) in north central, WI. Sometimes the station wouldn’t come in decent because it might be cloudy or raining or snowing out. lol
Proper Tune……Proper Music.✌🏻🏴
i haven't heard this in a long time. Love it.

That "Twangy" stringed instrument is a Indian Sitar- popular for a few years since used by the Beatles..
Classic!!! Take care guys!!

I have never been a great fan of soul or the Motown sound, but I really do like this song.😊
I’ll stay in this journey 😊
When I was 8 I moved into Camelot. All my neighbors were black. And I’m incredibly glad. I’d hear these songs AT MY FRIENDS HOMES helping do their chores so we could go outside.

Great choice. Great song. 👍
I LOVED this song growing up as a young gay boy in rural Pennsylvania. It wasn't until I become an adult that I totally understood the lyrics.

Great 70s song. Belinda Carlisle covered her song in the late 80s.
you didnt pay full attention to the words.
