    This is one of my favorite songs that I have loved since it first came out. It is an irresistible pop/soul/disco tune. Yes, the lyrics are at odds with the tone of the song -- counterpoint. Her husband walked out on her on her wedding night, but you've not saddened because the tune is so catchy and upbeat. Doesn't it make you want to get up and dance (I did)!

    There is some mystery to this song. Some people think it is about an impotent man, while others think it is about a frigid woman. In an interview with Lamont Dozier, who co-wrote the song, he explained: "The story was, the girl found out this guy was not all there. He had his own feelings about giving his all. He wanted to love this girl, he married the girl, but he couldn't perform on his wedding night because he had other issues about his sexuality. I'll put it that way."

    • @280Nox
      @280Nox 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've heard all of the mythical storylines as well; but never heard that Lamont Dozier (RIP) actually confirmed one of the storylines. I ask you: From which interview was this spoken?
      Considering Stonewall occurred in 1969, and "Bank of Gold" came out in 1970, there is something peculiar about the time line, and the events of the world at that time

    You should give a listen to a couple of Cornelius Brothers songs:
    Treat Her Like A Lady;
    It’s Too Late To Turn Back Now.
    Along with Freda Payne’s ‘Band Of Gold’ (and many other great songs of the early 70’s) they were some of our favorite songs to roller skate to on Friday or Saturday nights. Those times were GREAT!

    Freda's label, Invictus was formed by ex-Motown songwriting hitmakers Holland-Dozier-Holland, with house band The Funk Brothers playing on it. Gordy was SO retarded not renewing HDH's contract-- Even more so when he tried to sue them for "exploiting the Motown sound" (He lost in court, but made sure he got the Funk Brothers under contract with a clause they only play for his label quickly afterwards ) Dunno why Payne didn't have more hits with a voice like that!!

    you didnt pay full attention to the words. "but that night on our honeymoon, we stayed in separate rooms". "i wait in the darkness of my lonely room, filled with sadness, filled with gloom. hoping soon that you walk back through that door and love me, like you tried before." i hear that as they waited until they were married and that night he couldnt perform. and so he left her. read into that what you will........... i used to skate to this song in the 70's. i loved the beat and the music, the words didnt mean anything to me back then as a young kid !
