The awkward silence makes you realize that nobody in the room knew exactly what was going to happen when they swore in President Washington, because at this point nothing like this had ever been done before.
Washington astounded the European powers--twice. First, when he surrendered the command of the continental army, and did NOT seize power as a military dictator (as he could have easily) and secondly, when he resigned from office after his second term (there were no limits at the time). The peaceful transference of power without the death of a monarch was a concept beyond their experience at the time.
Thomas Dixon, you see, here in the U.K., because we never had anyone like George Washington, our Democracy formed more... roughly from our past. The position of Prime Minister didn’t really have a hard beginning, it just emerged slowly. We never got the chance to suddenly decide our Democratic ways in such a short time as you did, so you’ll find them to be more traditional. Our Prime Ministers, as an example, don’t have a limit to how many terms they get, and as a result, after 3 terms (each term is 5 years) in office, some get a little silly. I do think that the US political system (not the method of voting though, I still favour our British method in that sense) is a very clever system, certainly better than our British one.
Washington was a very good man, and not many people truly know much about him. He was the first president and is easily eclipsed by legends that came later like Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, etc. He was a private man and a peaceful man, although some speculate that he played dirty and even told lies, against the popular belief, to win independence... but I like to have a founder that was this way. Not a showboat or a king or emperor, but an honest and just soul that wanted to do the right thing.

The great thing about this series is how unconfident, uneasy, and how scared shitless the portrayal of these legendary figures are. Most people who get the roles of historical figures play them with grandeur, occupying the space made for them in history. Imagine going through life with laws that were written a few months ago, in a country most places do not even recognize as a legitimate state, and you're expected to always have the right answers to problems nobody trained you for. You'd be scared. These men were scared, every day.
So very true. Today we just assume everything back then was a fait accompli. That the country we have today was inevitable and just a given. Nothing of the sort! There was no certainty at all the the "United States" would ever amount to anything. It was such a radical concept, by a bunch of philosophically-minded revolutionaries. I think most other countries expected it to simply fall apart in the first 10 years.
Everything was uncharted territory, new, unsettled, hesitant, unsure that this rickety rowboat of state would even survive, which is one reason the British kept trying to take their colonies back. Washington predicted twenty years before the War of 1812 that the US would be at war again with Britain.
did you read the book by David McCullough? if not, I encourage you to do so. it is a fascinating book about a fascinating individual. you can look at George Washington and say the military life and what not is slightly more "exciting" (there are some great books on George Washington as well so it is not like he is forgotten), but Adams played a very crucial role in helping America claim independence and the birth of this nation. Sadly, Adams contributions are not always remembered and it is a damn shame. that is why it is great David wrote the book and they even turned it into a miniseries. don't get me wrong, I am all for a Washington miniseries, but the fact you don't think John Adams was interesting enough or special enough, shows you truly don't know his life and how important he was to this nation (Adams might not have been military, but he had an exciting life of his own). Adams may not have been poor but he was not necessarily born fabulously wealthy either. he struggled somewhat establishing his practice. he wanted to prove himself his entire life but often found himself falling somewhat short compared to guys like Washington and Jefferson (though again in reality, was still indeed such a crucial figure in history). I am not taking anything away from Washington, but Adams . Like I said, if you haven't read the book yet, I really encourage you to do so. McCullough is one of my favorite historians and I think you will appreciate (at least more) the truly great man Adams was and his contribution to American history

When, at 3:36, he says "So help me God." and the camera cuts to John Adams, I honestly had tears in my eyes. When Adams, a brilliant but arrogant man, fully realizes not only the importance of the moment, but sees truly for the first time the great man that George Washington was, it is a superb bit of acting and directing. This scene depicts one of the greatest and most important moments of the entire millennium, and it seems that all involved understood its importance. Just awesome.

@@robertwilkinson2889 most wealthy people of the colonial Era had banking and credit accounts in London. Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, etc all had dealings with British banks. Even during the Revolution the US didn’t have its own currency, and when it did start printing “Continentals” they were virtually worthless and had no real backing by the Congress. It wasn’t until spring of 1781 that the states actually became United by ratification of the Articles of Confederacy, which ironically was the year that the “continental” was removed from circulation because its value was all but vanished. It wasn’t until 1792, if I’m not mistaken, that an official, government backed currency, the dollar, was created. Up until that time the US used an odd mixture of Spanish Pieces of Eight, the French Livre, and the British Pound Sterling. These were the currencies most likely to be found in circulation before, during, and for several years after the American Revolution.So it was not uncommon at all for a person of means during the Revolution to have accounts in foreign banks, with English banks being preferred.
I just saw this for the first time, and it was chilling. I literally and instantly 'felt' the "brilliant but arrogant" John Adams and equally felt the change in him when he realized what was happening. Yes, indeed, superb acting and directing. I even said to myself, "What's up with John Adams? He's ticked off about something?" and then I understood the incredible scene in front of me. Just amazing. Wow! Generations of us wish we could have had this kind of input in our school days. But, well, you know, we didn't, unfortunately.
Fun fact: The few words George Washington adds at the end of his inauguration-“so help me God”, was not expected by anyone. It wasn’t the words he was requested to repeat. Many believe he’d added that last part, as he’d prayed God would watch over him, and guide him as the first President of the United States, in faithfully, and justly running the young nation. Such goes the line, “In God trust”.

George Washington encouraged his subordinates to criticize him. He also allowed his slaves to freely practice their own religions on Mount Vernon. George Washington was 6 foot 4, towering over his men in the field of battle. More fun facts! George Washington loved animals, but despised riding horses. He dearly loved his mules and was very overprotective of them, leaving a long list of instructions to his servants on how to take care of them. He considered mules to be the superior equine mount (and at this time, they were considered a king's mount) because they are far braver and sure-footed than horses. In fact, it was illegal to export a mule from Spain (where the best mules are bred) without the king's consent. He also gave his animals silly names - he had dogs named Sweetlips, Drunkard and Madame Moose. And when he finally received a mule as a gift from the king of Spain, he named it Royal Gift.

I don't know if the claim regarding his opinion of Washington is true, I'll look into it later, but this by no means would be a small compliment.

The nation did not elect George Washington. There was no campaign, no ballot boxes or anything that would be recognizable today. He was elected by the electors of the Electoral College. In 1789 only 10 of 13 States sent electors, but they were unanimous in their vote for Washington. This was a body of men that were chosen in some cases by the people of their respective states, but in nine states these electors were chosen by the state legislatures. The first election that would be recognizable today was in 1824. As time has passed, the electoral college has become subject to what is known as the "winner takes all" system. The population of each state vicariously elects the President. Each state has a corresponding number of electors in the electoral college. The candidate with the majority of votes essentially wins the state. Then the electors must cast their votes in accordance with their state's outcome. However, this outcome hardly resembles the actual voting of each American citizen. Thus, each election shows a certain preference by the population, but the people do not directly elect the President. This is why the number of Electoral College votes trump the popular vote. Hence, it has always been in the hands of a privileged body of electors far removed from the population.
I cannot believe that all these greats - George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin - were all alive at the same time and interacted as they did to form this nation. I would have loved to hear these discussions as they happened. What an amazing time.

Robert Olin - yeah, that was the one gripe I had with the John Adams miniseries, that it did a rather unfortunate hatchet job to Hamilton. However, considering it was told from Adams' perspective, it is only appropriate that his opinion of the man would be featured.
I think the most exciting mini series would be about Hamilton. I feel the worst part of this show was that Hamilton was barely in it, and when he was it was a very exaggerated portrayal of his character. That being said the actor for Hamilton nailed the role, I can't picture anyone else as him. Hamilton had many good qualities and many bad ones, and a mini series will only do him justice.
Washington lived a crazier life than all of them...would love to see a series about his younger days with Christopher gist and how he saved Washingtons life twice. Once from an attack by a "friendly" native that betrayed them and once when Washington fell into a freezing river while they were crossing it on a raft. Then we'd see jumonville Glen, the great meadow, and braddocks defeat. Events that truly influenced his life and that you dumb kids know nothing about.

This scene alone made me tear up a bit, the humility of such a man on one of the proudest days in American history amazes me. This was truly a proud day for the United States to have such an amazing man as our first President.
Even though Adams was undoubtedly bitter about the outcome of the election, I can still imagine him getting a bit teary for the occasion. It was the culmination of a lifetime's worth of struggle and sacrifice.

Adams, Lincoln, TR, FDR, even LBJ had the opportunity to help advocate then later affirm law and make executive decisions that made our country increasingly better for more people than George Washington. I do like George Washington, but that's because he's the first and who doesn't like the first!? And he did a good job I think, from putting down the whiskey rebellion to keeping the US out of the French and British conflict that would have possibly ended the US.

What’s absolutely incredible about our first President, was that he actually said “no” multiple times when asked if he would be the first president. He wanted to retire to mount vernon to a life of solidarity and comfort. But quite literally almost every citizen of the new country wanted him to be president. The first election was basically a grass roots effort to convince Washington to accept the office. He finally accepted after much effort was spent talking him into it. Always reminded me of that scene from gladiator “Do you accept this office”? “With all my heart no” “Maximus, that is why I MUST be you”.

This is such a late comment, but scholars believe that he never said “so help me god” there’s only “evidence” that Lincoln was the first president to add ‘so help me god’ :-)
David Morse is my favorite actor ever. I met him back in 93 when they were filming an episode of Seaquest DSV. I was a facility engineer responsible for setting up electrical, he was an extremely kind and humble person.

What I love is that even though Adams is the main subject of the miniseries, the show doesn't shy away from presenting his flaws. He's vainglorious and self-important in the opening here--he's a very real person. But at the same time, you see as the scene progresses, a man passionately devoted to the country, and as inspired by Washington as any American. He's both principled and petty--a delicate balance to strike.

All that hesitancy at the beginning, with VP Adams expressing his bewilderment of the moment, almost wondering why he was even there, not sure of what to do next, made *me* wonder what was supposed to happen next. Giamatti played his part so well. Washington motioned Adams to proceed ahead of him to the platform, then Adams stopped himself and allowed Washington to go first. Perfect. It was an age of manners, courtesy, and propriety. This was such a great series. It's grievous that too few Americans know anything about this.

As a Brazilian myself, watching this is very powerful, even though the USA is a country who supported military dictatorships around the world (including here), the inauguration of Washington on the first modern republic in the world must have been unique and incredible. First, when he surrendered the command of the continental army, and did NOT seize power as a military dictator (as he could have easily) and secondly, when he resigned from office after his second term (there were no limits at the time). The peaceful transference of power without the death of a monarch was a concept beyond their experience at the time.
Thomas Dixon, you see, here in the U.K., because we never had anyone like George Washington, our Democracy formed more... roughly from our past. The position of Prime Minister didn’t really have a hard beginning, it just emerged slowly. We never got the chance to suddenly decide our Democratic ways in such a short time as you did, so you’ll find them to be more traditional. Our Prime Ministers, as an example, don’t have a limit to how many terms they get, and as a result, after 3 terms (each term is 5 years) in office, some get a little silly. I do think that the US political system (not the method of voting though, I still favour our British method in that sense) is a very clever system, certainly better than our British one.

Washington was a very good man, and not many people truly know much about him. He was the first president and is easily eclipsed by legends that came later like Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, etc. He was a private man and a peaceful man, although some speculate that he played dirty and even told lies, against the popular belief, to win independence... but I like to have a founder that was this way. Not a showboat or a king or emperor, but an honest and just soul that wanted to do the right thing.

The great thing about this series is how unconfident, uneasy, and how scared shitless the portrayal of these legendary figures are. Most people who get the roles of historical figures play them with grandeur, occupying the space made for them in history. Imagine going through life with laws that were written a few months ago, in a country most places do not even recognize as a legitimate state, and you're expected to always have the right answers to problems nobody trained you for. You'd be scared. These men were scared, every day.
So very true. Today we just assume everything back then was a fait accompli. That the country we have today was inevitable and just a given. Nothing of the sort! There was no certainty at all the the "United States" would ever amount to anything. It was such a radical concept, by a bunch of philosophically-minded revolutionaries. I think most other countries expected it to simply fall apart in the first 10 years.
Everything was uncharted territory, new, unsettled, hesitant, unsure that this rickety rowboat of state would even survive, which is one reason the British kept trying to take their colonies back. Washington predicted twenty years before the War of 1812 that the US would be at war again with Britain.
Especially when the King of England would have hung them quite happily .

did you read the book by David McCullough? if not, I encourage you to do so. it is a fascinating book about a fascinating individual. you can look at George Washington and say the military life and what not is slightly more "exciting" (there are some great books on George Washington as well so it is not like he is forgotten), but Adams played a very crucial role in helping America claim independence and the birth of this nation. Sadly, Adams contributions are not always remembered and it is a damn shame. that is why it is great David wrote the book and they even turned it into a miniseries. don't get me wrong, I am all for a Washington miniseries, but the fact you don't think John Adams was interesting enough or special enough, shows you truly don't know his life and how important he was to this nation (Adams might not have been military, but he had an exciting life of his own). Adams may not have been poor but he was not necessarily born fabulously wealthy either. he struggled somewhat establishing his practice. he wanted to prove himself his entire life but often found himself falling somewhat short compared to guys like Washington and Jefferson (though again in reality, was still indeed such a crucial figure in history). I am not taking anything away from Washington, but Adams . Like I said, if you haven't read the book yet, I really encourage you to do so. McCullough is one of my favorite historians and I think you will appreciate (at least more) the truly great man Adams was and his contribution to American history

The actor in Turn did a great job, too. He looked more the part, but this seems like higher resolution authentic.
When, at 3:36, he says "So help me God." and the camera cuts to John Adams, I honestly had tears in my eyes. When Adams, a brilliant but arrogant man, fully realizes not only the importance of the moment, but sees truly for the first time the great man that George Washington was, it is a superb bit of acting and directing.
This scene depicts one of the greatest and most important moments of the entire millennium, and it seems that all involved understood its importance. Just awesome.

Even during the Revolution the US didn’t have its own currency, and when it did start printing “Continentals” they were virtually worthless and had no real backing by the Congress. It wasn’t until spring of 1781 that the states actually became United by ratification of the Articles of Confederacy, which ironically was the year that the “continental” was removed from circulation because its value was all but vanished. It wasn’t until 1792, if I’m not mistaken, that an official, government backed currency, the dollar, was created. Up until that time the US used an odd mixture of Spanish Pieces of Eight, the French Livre, and the British Pound Sterling. These were the currencies most likely to be found in circulation before, during, and for several years after the American Revolution.So it was not uncommon at all for a person of means during the Revolution to have accounts in foreign banks, with English banks being preferred.

More fun facts! George Washington loved animals, but despised riding horses. He dearly loved his mules and was very overprotective of them, leaving a long list of instructions to his servants on how to take care of them. He considered mules to be the superior equine mount (and at this time, they were considered a king's mount) because they are far braver and sure-footed than horses. In fact, it was illegal to export a mule from Spain (where the best mules are bred) without the king's consent.
He also gave his animals silly names - he had dogs named Sweetlips, Drunkard and Madame Moose. And when he finally received a mule as a gift from the king of Spain, he named it Royal Gift.

The nation did not elect George Washington. There was no campaign, no ballot boxes or anything that would be recognizable today. He was elected by the electors of the Electoral College. In 1789 only 10 of 13 States sent electors, but they were unanimous in their vote for Washington. I think the most exciting mini series would be about Hamilton. I feel the worst part of this show was that Hamilton was barely in it, and when he was it was a very exaggerated portrayal of his character. That being said the actor for Hamilton nailed the role, I can't picture anyone else as him. Hamilton had many good qualities and many bad ones, and a mini series will only do him justice.
Washington lived a crazier life than all of them...would love to see a series about his younger days with Christopher gist and how he saved Washingtons life twice. Once from an attack by a "friendly" native that betrayed them and once when Washington fell into a freezing river while they were crossing it on a raft. Then we'd see jumonville Glen, the great meadow, and braddocks defeat. Events that truly influenced his life and that you dumb kids know nothing about.
As an Englishman and a loyal subject of her Majesty the Queen I feel no shame whatsoever in commending the American people and their magnificent history and their strive for liberty; the people portrayed in this series really capture the spirit of the time and it is with great pleasure I say that the United Kingdom and the United States share both a rough and glorious history, due to which we are faithful allies one to another, now and always. Adams, Lincoln, TR, FDR, even LBJ had the opportunity to help advocate then later affirm law and make executive decisions that made our country increasingly better for more people than George Washington. What’s absolutely incredible about our first President, was that he actually said “no” multiple times when asked if he would be the first president. He wanted to retire to mount vernon to a life of solidarity and comfort. But quite literally almost every citizen of the new country wanted him to be president. The first election was basically a grass roots effort to convince Washington to accept the office. He finally accepted after much effort was spent talking him into it. Always reminded me of that scene from gladiator

Giamanti really showed his talents in this series that a lot of people I don’t think they knew he had. This series also opened the eyes to a lot of people who didn’t know how amazing the English language sounds when you have a vast vocabulary and know how to use it at a high level of sentence structure.

It’s true! My favorite historical bio. By far.
What I love is that even though Adams is the main subject of the miniseries, the show doesn't shy away from presenting his flaws. He's vainglorious and self-important in the opening here--he's a very real person. But at the same time, you see as the scene progresses, a man passionately devoted to the country, and as inspired by Washington as any American. He's both principled and petty--a delicate balance to strike.
I we could somehow have a time machine to show President Washington how much we have grown, it would be a miracle to see his reaction.

All that hesitancy at the beginning, with VP Adams expressing his bewilderment of the moment, almost wondering why he was even there, not sure of what to do next, made *me* wonder what was supposed to happen next. Giamatti played his part so well. Washington motioned Adams to proceed ahead of him to the platform, then Adams stopped himself and allowed Washington to go first. Perfect. It was an age of manners, courtesy, and propriety. This was such a great series. It's grievous that too few Americans know anything about this.

As a Brazilian myself, watching this is very powerful, even though the USA is a country who supported military dictatorships around the world (including here), the inauguration of Washington on the first modern republic in the world must have been unique and incredible. With all its faults, I still say, God Bless the United States of America!

Probably the most accurate depiction of this event. Even Washington's soft tone is right, many people complained they could barely hear him when he gave a speech, mostly because of the constant trouble he had with his teeth. The building is still there in lower Manhattan, Federal Hall on Wall Street, right across the street from the JP Morgan Bank and about a hundred yards from the New York Stock Exchange.

However, outside of parties and subjective opinions, there have objectively been presidents that have lowered the bar of office of president of the United States. Joe Biden is unequivocally and absolutely one of those presidents and it’s frankly not even up for debate. It’s overwhelming the evidence against that man. FJB
