      **What are you thinking??? You are ruining the vibe of confusion and frustration essential to these videos by having the audacity to offer helpful follow-up information!** Now people WONT have to go and do all sorts of further digging and searching in a fruitless attempt at learning what the hell happened before, during and after the half minute of vague video. You sir, have partially cleared things up, and for that, you should be ashamed!

      @Chris Wood
      I don't know any more than anyone else who watched this, AND I posted a comment that's right before yours, where I sarcastically criticized the complete lack of perspective and information pertaining to this tragedy. But it's possible that the original poster left his comment about all 4 crew members surviving, because he searched for additional information, but was misled by inaccurate online sources. For that reason, I don't think he necessarily deserves condemnation.
      There have been PLENTY of instances where I'll watch a video that ends in some sort of tragedy, but with little to no useful information as to what occured before or after the events in the video, I'll have to do some internet digging. Unfortunately, what may seem like a legitimate source for information involving the tragedy, may in fact end up being inaccurate. But assuming it's true, I'll post some of the info it in the messages under the original video. Later I'll be told that the info I posted wasn't 100% accurate. But it wasn't my fault, and all I was doing was trying to provide some useful closure info for other folks who watch the video later.
      So it's not like either I or the guy who posted that "all 4 crew members survived" were intentionally trying to mislead anyone. In fact, all I was doing was trying to be helpful. I would bet that's all that this guy was trying to do. He probably wasn't seeking to mislead viewers or disrespect the victims.

      @Chris Wood I think your good friend was on another boat or Transportation safety board of Canada and the local newspaper "The Province" forgot to mention someone dying in this incident. A simple Google search relates no deaths with the tugboat North Arm Venture capsize. I did however see some sort of 4 legged critter fall down the man door just after 0:12 and cant imagine it survived. If your friend was crew member #5 then this would be truly a great conspiracy to investigate.

    I tow boated a few years on the Fraser River and the gulf. What would have possibly saved the tug in this situation is releasing (blowing) the hydraulic valve governing the brake on the winch drum allowing the tow line to run out. This would dump energy/momentum, and allow the skipper time to position the tug to gently come up on the tow line, and then increase power to keep steerage rather than being broadsided by a runaway force.
    I can't say with certainty this would have saved the tug. Who knows what the tide, currents, equipment failures, etc., were involved here. I only mention this maneuver for those who have never tow-boated.
    I learned this saying many years ago from my father, a fisherman: "It's a good day when everybody goes home."

      Keeping the watertight doors closed would have helped somewhat. About one boat per year is lost on the LMR due to watertight doors being left open and the vessel taking a hard list due to turning into the current.

      Jim M is right, in the "trade" the phrase is tripped. The wire crossed the tug and the tow hitch pulled her over. Very common towing accident. Most cable tow boats have a series of sockets, (holes) around the gunnel at the stern. Big hefty pipes are dropped in these sockets to keep the wire from getting athwart ships. Unlikely a current alone could have rolled over. Some one made a mistake, took a short cut, skipped a step or was working above their pay grade. Happens all the time. Whether you're the wiper or the master some simple arithmetic is absolutely essential. You have to return your ship the dock exactly the same number of times you left the dock.

    In memory of my uncle Dick, a Chief Engineer for the Red Star Line towing company. I do not remember the name of his last vessel, the one in this anecdote, but his berth before that was as Chief Engineer on the Saratoga, same company. Tossed into the East River, NYC one frigid winter night when the tow sank and stood his tug on its beam ends. The helmsman took a hard knock to the head that dazed him. Incredibly, the tow line parted or was released, the vessel righted itself, and steamed on leaving my uncle behind in the icy drink. Lucky for us all, the helmsman cut through the fog and throttled down and Dick was rescued. Later, he told me how he and some of the crew had gone ashore earlier for dinner that night, and that was why he couldn’t kick off his shoes, which he normally left loose and untied while aboard.

    Sechelt Rapids has a very tight window to be used for ANY boat movement. There's a cement operation there running 24/7 on the non-road north side. I used to rent the fourth cabin on the north road side from a buddy. When the rapids start to run you do NOT have time to react; looks like the barge made that decision and it's all over fast.

    I have a friend who skippered for Westcoast Tug and Barge. The tow overtook them one night somewhere in Georgia Strait. They managed to swim ashore and spent a very cold and wet night on the beach. That was with the tow line out. Vigilance is everything. The tug was dangling from the tow line.

    Tugboats are both heavy & powerful. When under load they set very deep in the water. Their power, when delivered at certain angles...can capsize the craft easily. This is a kind of physics a tug captain always keeps in mind. Working on the water this way might be well paid...but it is frikken' dangerous.

    Findings as to causes and contributing factors
    The transit through Sechelt Rapids began prior to slack tide and, as a result, the barge came under the influence of the ebb tide, causing it to shear to starboard.
    The attempt to regain control of the barge was unsuccessful due to an insufficient reserve of power on the tug.
    The North Arm Venture capsized when the shortened towline pivoted athwartships; its force, then acting transversely, rapidly overcame the tug's righting ability.
    The absence of procedures or guidelines on girding left the master without important information to aid in his decision-making.

    • @12345fowler
      @12345fowler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How can you even be in a master position and not knowing the "girding" issues and how to get out of them, presto ? Even a rookie glider student pilot knows how to seperate from the tow cable in case of problems. It is literally his first lesson.

    please note that none of the float free life saving apparatus appear to come free, most notably the inflatable life rafts.
    Previously tugs were not required to secure their float free inflatable life rafts with hydrostatic release. How quickly they capsize they trap their rafts in their cradles before the hydrostatics can release them.

I was mate on a Foss tug towing a ramp barge pretty much like this one, through Peril Straits in AK, we had shortened up to go through the Narrows (If one of the three bouys is towed under by the current, best turn donuts and wait for slack) though not nearly this short. On the way through the Narrows, the barge caught up with us and was doing it's best to pass.....the Capt. went to full bell right about then to keep in front, but for a bit there, we could see how we were doing without looking behind the tug. It'll get yer heart rate up a bit, A bit different from the ship work I was more familiar with.

He, therefore, had to analyze the situation as it was unfolding and choose an immediate course of action based on his own experience, which had never involved aborting a tow. By electing not to abort, he selected the option that allowed him the possibility of quickly regaining control of the tow, even though the severity of the possible consequences-girding and capsizing-were significantly greater than opting to abort.
    In the absence of procedures or guidelines, the master lacked important information that could have helped him decide how to respond to the girding situation."

      any engine will run for a bit upside down, until it seizes up from no oil circulation. Or with a carbureted engine, the carb will probably stop delivering fuel before that.

    By not wearing Life Jackets whilst working on deck, the Crew stack the odds against themselves. Even if knocked unconscious a Life Jacket will keep the casualty's head clear of the water - but only if the person is wearing it!
    Likewise, by not securing watertight hatches and doors whilst underway the crew severely reduces the vessel's ability to right itself and ensures that it floods much faster!
    Complacency about the wearing of Life Jackets and the securing of all watertight hatches and doors whilst underway could have been fatal, thankfully there was only vessel and equipment damage, all of which is replaceable, albeit at some cost!
    This video makes for an excellent safety training aid.

    Looks like maybe too much forward momentum on the tow, and too much slack in the tow line. Helps to have another tug on the stern to use a little braking action. Tight maneuvers like that can obviously be dangerous. Glad the crew was saved.

      “Damage
      The vessel suffered no hull or structural damage. However, electronic navigation equipment, wiring, and engineering machinery were damaged beyond repair.”

      @@stinger1982 yeah, i was wondering if “engineering equipment” meant engines or not. From the little I know, ships have lots of safety systems to shut down the engines quickly when it hits the fan

      If nothing else, lack of oil in the engine sump, and available to the pumps, would cause trouble, but fuel starvation should stop them when the injector pumps run dry.
