- The Galaxy Note 7 was my favourite ever Samsung device that never was.
It has lived on through the Note Fan Edition, and I managed to get my hands on one and see what it would've been like if it never blew up.
Here is my 2024 review of the phone that never was.

The Galaxy S7 was the first Samsung phone i ever bought with my own money(had a hand me down S5 from my dad and even played around with my mom's Note 5 a few times.) and the Sprint technician had basically told me it and the iPhone 7 were the best phones on the market at the time. Cant say i can recall what drove me to pick the S7 over the IPhone 7 in that moment, but i was glad I did. Been rocking with Samsung since. I remember hearing about the Note 7 scandal around that time and all my friends couldnt fathom why i picked up a Galaxy in spite of it. In hindsight I can understand their perplexion.
6:45 I loved my Iris Scanner on my Note 9, worked flawlessly at night
Thee Note 7, I prepared for this model, bought accessories including a metal bumper case which gave it the right weightiness. The 7 was for me Samsung at it's best, feature rich, stable, class. Eye rest as well as tons of other features. It was for me a marriage and being a dedicated Samsung note user, (had everyone) I yearn for Samsung to wow us users as it did with the 7. I say this with all due respect as i am expressing my experience. From the first note through to the 24 ultra, i've had all but none have 'wow'd' me as the 7 did. The feature rich stable and so well thought out. It was a marriage that made me a note 7 widow' lol. If Samsung were to wow us with 'that attitude' today, they would be way further out there. Over the years Samsung has become more 'christmas turkey syndrome', you kinda know most of what they are gonna come out with and whilst i love the other innovations, not the same as when they came out with the note 7. Air command and most of the other innovations started here. Whilst the 7 was so great, i do love today's dimensions and the evolution of processing power, but again, Samsung should respectfully reinvigorate its 'everything including the kitchen sink' attitude. Samsung Note 7, i salute you. lol
Same.
The Note 7 was such a mature device with an iconic design. Everything about it was perfect for it's time. Except for the battery lol
I wish samsung would make a phone with this design with updated internals maybe call it the note se (special edition)
Would LOVE that
I really miss this kind of smartphones design 2016 and 2017
Love that phone man, thinking about getting one later on to play music on the car.
I have the S8 and it is a great phone for me. I liked having the iris and fingerprint scanner. I then got the S20FE 5G due to the fact the S8 was on security updates only! Before I had the S8 I had the S3 and S5 Neo. I was aware of the Note series, but they were too expensive for me at the time. Then everyone knew about the Note 7 disaster.
My first Note like phone is the S23 Ultra and for a few reasons - Snapdragon only, the cameras especially the 10x zoom, replacing a lost compact camera, and I got it on a big cashback discount. Sometimes it's best to wait.
I kept me mine still have today guess what it never blew up or caught fire!
I am very jealous of the OG Note 7 owners.
I wish I could have kept my Note 7! I wasn't scared of it blowing up, I worked around water and kept it cool by putting a wet paper towel on it if it even got warm. But then sent a software update that kept it from charging above 20%, and I couldn't use it at that small of a battery size, so I sadly returned it and got the S7 edge until the note 9 came out, still miss my Note 7
To this day I still wonder how things could've been had the Note7 never had such a fate. I still remember how excited the whole world was towards it; it's something kinda unheard of at the time, at least towards a non-iPhone device.
8yrs later and we are STILL paying the consequences. Samsung hesitates to pursue battery tech and settles for the status quo. This killed hunger for innovation at Samsung imo.
I definitely think there is that to consider. Also the OG Fold issues from launch too.
Indeed. I could be a massive differentiator Vs Apple
They got too scared of the risks again, but the Note 7's problem was literally just a simple design issue. They could've used that hard lesson in their future devices, but they chose to play it safe instead.
Hello @techwithbenefits I was wondering, how did your note 7 didn't blow up, is it a more safer battery?
I went through two Note 7's, and neither had the battery issue. I loved the coral blue color and wanted so bad to keep it. I wish I did. I've been a Note user since the 3. And the iris scanner worked like a charm for me, way better than the fingerprint
I loved the two Note 7s I owned. One on release, the second after the recall. After they called them all back I got the LGV20. It was also a fun phone to use.
I had note 2 and 4 and then horrible iphone 6s plus and after 3 years came back for s8+... Those Samsung phones were amazing...
And now I have S24U which is still incredible...
Thank you Samsung..
Sometimes we need accident, we need mistakes and mishaps so we can learn and improve..
They definitely learned the hard way 😅😅
Thanks for the video. Please revisit Note Edge too. I loved that phone.
I'll add that to my retro Samsung list!
A few years ago i bought a Note FE in Gold.
Still play around with it everey once in a while.
And i think two years ago i got my hands on a sealed Note 7 in black (first version, they later realesed a "safe" version, which also blew up)
Its still sealed and i will probably never unpack it.
Keep it sealed as long as you can!
I still have the note fan edition un coral blue as well. It still works fine but you can clearly see that it's lacking considering it's a 7 year old phone.
I still have my Blackberry Q10, and it still works, even if most of its internet based apps are no longer supported. My S3, S4, and S6 edge plus, are all deader than door nails. The joke of it is that the S6 has some screen damage, and it needs a battery. I took it to a repair shop to get a quote, which was horrifying. Even now here in South Africa the prices for a 9 year old smartphone screen is the same as a brand new entry level phone.
Forget about renewing your S6. I tried even after total reset. It is too slow for modern apps now
The size and weight were special. I'd love top end specs and a pen in a smaller form factor!
It's still class compared to today's phone. Another pinnacle phone from Samsung must be Galaxy Note 20 Ultra after Note 7 or 7 FE. The offerings in today's S24 Ultra isn't that good until you aprreciate the software.
you can acsualy buy a Note 7. i did and mine is gold. its an SM-N930F original note 7 with no back panel or battery (thats how it came) so i buyed an S7 battery and put it in there. i aslo had some back panels lying around, so i put one on it (sadly, its blue coral) and it now works. its original original Note 7 (not recal replacement) and it can be used to a limited extend
Still have my S7 lying around.. battery trashed, ordered a new screen.. such a perfect phone but no Type C..
Then we have the Note7, corrected the only issue with the S7, and that Blue is stunning. Too bad it came later on the S7 Edge and not the S7 :/
Eitherway, the Note7 was the phone that converted me from an Apple fanboy to a Samsung fan, and next to the S7, I'll confidently say it's the best phone ever
(Also, when custom ROMed, the S7 Exynos models can actually record in 4K60, tested it with a Note9 port)
damn this was a sight to see in my feed.
This was such a great phone to hold, when they launched the Note 8 it felt souless, really didn't come back from the dead until Samsung released the juggernaut that was the note 9.
The Note 8 had all the appeal but no soul. The Note 7 just had something about it. Emotional attachment was real. Thought you would like this one from the OG days.
The Note 7 was the first time I gave Samsung on Android a try. All Samsung S & Note phones prior were terribly bloated and hung/lagged between functions. However, the Note 7 was the first device to take full advantage of Samsung collab with Google to scrap TouchWiz for a smoother UI functionality in Samsung Experience UI. I was pretty much forced to take a laggy S7 edge because the Note 7 recall & my contract situation. You could literally tell the difference in phone functionality between S7 & Note 7 and it wasn't not even a close comp. We didn't get the Note 7 experience back until the Note 8. Note 7 & Note 8 were the phones that made me like Samsung as a Android device.
The Note7 was going to be a turning point for software and hardware aligned. S8 was a good next step though!
I wish Samsung got more inspiration from their older phones.
My 7 Edge did caught fire while in my pocket, not an amusing event ! I changed the battery and believe or not, it still works fine to this day, serves as an upscale MP3/Movies/Notes/PDA/Reader and is definitely plugged in every single night to charge up, without any bad event so far, even though it has one of the best battery duration I ever experienced, over 3 days ! Of course, without the sim, wifi and all the high consumption useless apps. The only thing I would like is to be able to stop Samsung from asking me to connect to my Samsung Account, even after removing all Samsung related programs ! So I am sure the only problem was the battery, not the phone.
Oh wow! That's crazy it caught fire. Thankfully you're okay!
The S7 Edge was a great phone, loved the design and screen on it.
You should be able to turn off notifications for Samsung Account in the Notifications settings menu.
Or long press on the notification that pops up and follow some prompts to turn off the notifications
@techwithbenefits well it was a very hot day and I suspect the phone overheated when plugged back in the car for a very short time before I put it in my pocket.
That might’ve done it. Since then Samsung increased safety testing and standards for their batteries so this can't happen again
@@techwithbenefits well as I said, I had a new battery put in and ever since, I did not have any problems whatsoever. I do not know if its a Samsung battery though ! Anyway, it has been top notch eversince !
I have 3 note 7 here all working
Nope, not going to agree with you on using the Note 7 for today
I personally think that the S10 is the true king of older phones specifically for the Samsung phones
It literally had the last 3.5 jack, has newer OS and is insanely fast for how old of a phone this is. I regret selling one of my phones. However I did keep my larger 512 model not the 256
Personally the cameras are doing still good work, I personally don't care about the front but their front cameras had better dynamic range and even had dual front cameras on the front on the S10+
Anyway... Personally I wish I could install my own updated OS on it but since it's AT&T bought/branded in the US I don't think I'll be able to.
NOTE: You mentioned in the video a fact I forgot. They did only sell the best cameras with the Galaxy S series.
This might be the reason why it refuses to give the same cameras to the Flip or more like the Fold.
The S Series is definietly their camera innovation devices. I hope they can expand into Fold soon enough though.
Adored the Note 7. Hated to let it go, twice!
It was so sad wasn't it!
@techwithbenefits yes, will always remember the phone that never was.
Tô me the S/Note 8 & 9 lines are the peak Samsung design, and that started with the 7 line.
The S6 and S6 Edge I believe were the starting point for where we are now.
The Note 7 is one of my dream phones. It looks awesome and blows your socks off.
I'm still salty about them cancelling the Iris Scanner in the S/Note 10 series. It was the most awesome feature out there and I used it every since I had the S8+
A casualty of the war on bezels! The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is a capable replacement, but the iris scanner felt so futuristic!
5:25 No it wasn't. It's a hit and miss most of the time. I have a S9 and the Iris Scanner is horrible unless you're really trying. It would've stayed if it was good.
Being first or early just to roll back or kill off stuff doesn't make them superior ◡̈
i had the note 2, two note 5, then skipped all the way to note 2 ultra.. I was extremely satisfied with the note 2 and even made many custom roms for the note 2. I have a few custom themed roms that had ported note 3 and 4 features. The note 5 was ok but coming from the note 2 I was actually disappointed because it had no replaceable battories or sdcard. After using a few xiaomi phones I returned to the note 20 Ultra. I still use the 20 as a wifi device. Sadly the note 20 serious requires paying to unlock the bootloader. So now 4 years later it is usable but stock on outdated software. Thankfully I missed the note 7 disaster.
Samsung always made the most beautiful phones I've ever seen 💕
I had just bought mine, and 24 hours later, I returned it because of news about the battery
What if we install custom rom on it does it then explode
Older smartphone design was definitely better in a lot of ways. Now they're all just glass slabs with a hole punch display and some different looking camera on the rear. The colors and designs were so much better years ago. I guess they discovered or realized that most people simply use a case for their device right out of the box.
I think because the tech inside phones has advanced so much, space internally is at a premium. So external designs don't become a priority as much. Only so much you can with a slab of glass!
I wanted to get the Note 7 but, after the recall, I waited for the Note 8 and what a disappointment that was! The batter life on the Note 8 was awful and I had to go through THREE phones till one actually worked with Sprint's voicemail as it was some known issue at the time because they had NO actual SIMM card at the time and only worked with Sprint. The Note 8 was THE WORST Note series phone I ever owned and updated to the Note 10+ 5G which was a GREAT phone for its time! I was a NOTE user since the Note 3. For me, I migrated to T-Molbile after they purchased Sprint and it's been nothing but BETTER since.
It was a golden era
It was a beautiful phone ❤
The note 7 was the best phone Samsung ever made 💪🏾💪🏾
WHY DONT PHONES COME WITH FRONT FLASHES ANYMORE🙄🙄🙄
i loved front flasb on my J series.
The screens are bright enough to be used as a flash now and the sensors along with the software have improved so much now that it negates the need for one, not mention there being no space for them with the lack of top and bottom bezels
@ if you think your screen flashing at max brightness is the same as an actual flash for photography your deluded.
The Note 7 didn't have a front flash though
@techwithbenefits yes im fully aware thats when i mentioned my J series, it was just making an anecdotal point because i realized no one ever brings up the front flash being gone in phones
Hi brother. Which country are you from?
Australia!
This phone really looks sleek even in today's timeline.
Right! It's so light too
The note 8 still holds it own in 2024 but battery life is ut weakest point . Nice video
S7/S7 Edge were fire, but not literally
Ever since the incident happened back in 2016, I decided i had enough with the Samsung smartphones.
I had got the s7 256gb gold n platnium back then it was amazing ppl though it was a iphone lol
I love the note7
Most people have a Galaxy case. U 🐝 stupid enough N bold enough 2 carry around without case on Sammy Galaxy expensive 📱. So, no wobble when using S pen.
Still have mine...box and all.
So jealous
14:12 animations on s24 are really bad. i had a stroke watching them
Note FE is peak Samsung
My first and only Note was the Note 9. 12:44
Haters mocked us with this phone.
But they're truly wrong
Absolutely wrong
ALLA-
photos of older Galaxys are much bether in my opinion compared to new ones
Animations are overblown...just a way to bring stupidly about their phone
8 years ago I mightve agreed, but I think it does add a sense of fun, and can be easily switched off if not required or enjoyed.
Very nixe phone and a good camera. Nevertheless I completely disagree to your comments e.g. 7:27. The older Note7 cam shows natural exposure, the Fold 6 uses HDR to an extent the pic looks totally fake. May be great of Insta folks of today but if you're somehow into photography these "shadow details" fake HDR processing of today is simply disgusting
Hmm. When my eyes look at the sky i see the details of clouds and the blue of the sky.
Older smartphones didn't process that and blew out the highlights. Newer phones process multiple frames and preserve that range...dynamically
Note 8 and 9 was ok
Don't take this the wrong way. I never used my eyes to unlock a screen. I use the pin number or my fingerprint. The Fingerprints are whole lot easier. When the phone sitting on the table? I don't want to have to pick the phone up and look at it. Everything will time I want to unlock it. That makes no sense to me. Sorry never used that feature. I don't understand why you're even used that's just my opinion
The beauty of it is you could have both fingerprint AND iris scanner turned on at the same time. Best of both worlds
@techwithbenefits I said I don't understand picking your phone up and have to look at any time when I don't even have to look at. You just put my finger put on that go. I'm not my business, but that's just my opinion. Have a wonderful day. I would never put my face on my phone.
@jamesturner961 it isn't your face though. I take your point, it's a good thing there are many options!
S7 note 7 hot trash. Very hot chipset.
Im still trying to get a Note FE. Beautiful phone.
Nope FOOLS EDITION is garbage
@DENVEROUTDOORMAN
How are you gonna tell me no on my own preference? You really didn't have to reply. Move along.
Go to koreanbro.com very easy and smooth process to order and arrived quickly.
