    I grow dahlias in North Texas. This last spring I started them from seed, that was so gratifying! I had tuber that I bought at a local nursery, but the seeds, by far did better! Yeah!! I'm experimenting with... "to dig or not to dig" that is the question. What do you think?

    Couple of things, I use survey tape in multiple colours so that I can colour code the labels one month prior to digging up. Yellow tape for yellow dahlias, orange for orange, etc. I store my tubers in fir wood flakes from our planer dust extractor and store the combo in grocery store paper bags, rolled over and closed with tape at the top, but I do divide my dahlias as I have almost nil death or rot. I have next to no rot because I cut out the mother tuber, all signs of the stem and all roots and skinny tubers. Where ever there is a cut I spray with a 4:1 water/food grade hydrogen peroxide mix. That's it, I don't check them anymore, waste of time, just pull out the pre-divided tubers March 1st and get them growing. Additional info. Dig, wash dirt off and store for one day upside down. Cut away roots, mother tuber, stem and spray all cuts with 4:1 mixture and leave to dry for one day. Bag up with labels on each division made from yogurt containers (about 12 per container) tied on with colour coded pipe cleaners. Super fast and stress free. 3 days per dug section. As one dug section dries, the previous one gets divided etc, and the previous divided ones get bagged up in layers of wood chips withing the bags. I choose to do only about 20 new ones per day so for me that equates to 8 part days - leaving me time to other chores as well to keep the days more interesting..

      I have so many yogurt containers. I love the label idea. What temp do you store them at? I only have a cooler corner in a finished basement.

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amysgardenstead2879 I store mine in a cool corner of our basement. As long as they stay below 10deg celsius they are fine, I never have any growth when I pull them out. Where I live the humidity is too high in the winter to store them in an area that is not heated and its not a good idea to have no heat in enclosed spaces due to the humidity. (Campbell River on Vancouver Island, BC - the climate is a temporal rain forest and very wet Nov, Dec, Jan.).

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@twigandbloomgoods I did too, until I ran out of the old blinds. I grow aprox 150 dahlias and sell the rest of the tubers presprouted, so I go through a lot of labels. I also sell potted tulips, dafs, and alliums with the same labels sunk into the ground. I think I went through about 800 labels this fall on just those two items. The old blinds I had went fast.

    I live in zone 10B and lifted my dahlias back in October. Within a few weeks the tubers were shriveled and rotten so next year I will leave them in the ground. I was so disappointed to lose those tubers. It's just too hot here to store them. We're having the coldest temps this week and at night it is around 50 degrees. Even in the garage it's just too warm. 😥😥😥 Oh well Hope you have a merry Christmas!

    I hope it all works great. In my experience, I found moist vermiculite works best for me. I add a little water to the vermiculite about once a month and it stores very well. I also am careful to dust with sulfur first, as nematodes and other small insects will eat them if left untreated.

    • @FlowerHillFarm
      @FlowerHillFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used vermiculite last year! It was ok, but my temps were not great so I had other issues. I found it to be very expensive for the amount that I needed to use. I've never had an insect issue- fingers crossed!

    I grow mine outside in clay or ceramic containers for display in the front & on my back porch. I'm in Zone 5 so for winter this year, I took them from their pots & transplanted them in plastic nursery containers for storage in a dark, cooler section of my basement. The plan is to retrieve them in late March, placing them inside by my south facing sliding door in hopes of an early start & an eventual move to their outdoor summer homes.

    I never clean my dahlia tubers by hose, just like potatoes or carrots, I think the dirt adds some protection layer. I dig the tubers, lay them out on the floor in the house to dry a little bit, next day I remove big chunks of soil. Always divide in spring, you never know which tubers will survive. Never loose whole clump, just individual tubers.

  • @barbarafegley5566
    @barbarafegley5566 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This year I dug my tubers hosed them off, dunked them into a diluted bleach solution. Let them dry labeled them and double wrapped them in plastic wrP from Costco. Placed them in a Styrofoam cooler and set them in the coolest part of the basement. Did not divide the clumps. As you said why divide tubers that won't make it. Will see how this works out.

    Probably your technique will be massively successful. Washing the soil off of anything reduces survival.
    Like potatoes or carrots etc, when they are left dry and dirty they don't go bad. Plus by not breaking up the dahlia tubers you don't have open 'wounds' either.
    When you plant them next year do you have to break them up? Can any of them be planted with all their
    tubers intact? Could you try a few like that to see if they produce more flowers that way? Just a few.

    • @FlowerHillFarm
      @FlowerHillFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I can split them in spring OR plant the entire clump. I have done both successfully. The clumps tend to produce more stems but the individual tubers tend to catch up quickly! I hope this method works! It's easy and time efficient!

    I've never grown dahlias. But if you are just planning on growing them again in mass, why would you need to spend time separating each tuber? Can't you just plant the whole grouping and they would still perform? I'd seriously would like to know as I've wanted to grow them. Granted you would have to dig a bigger hole, but I think I'd rather dig a bigger hole than spend hours separating them. Idk.

    • @FlowerHillFarm

      You could plant the clump, yes. Dividing them gives you more plants and the tubers multiply over time. You do not have to separate them but most people want to for more production. 💐
