Unthinkable Admission: Never Thought I'd Utter These Words

  • In this video, I make an unthinkable admission about buying knives for my TH-cam channel. Watch to find out more about this surprising revelation!
I'm still going to be a knife guy and the channel is continuing. Just in a slightly different direction. Stay tuned for the video explaining that!!! Let's see how long I can keep that promise to myself. Collecting anything, especially knives, can be a joy, however, when it gets to the point where your stuff is beginning to own you, it erodes that joy. That is where I am in my 53 years of knife collecting. My goal is to really become a minimalist. I'm not saying pack it in and live off grid. But, really minimize what I mentally have to take inventory of when it comes to possessions. I'll tell you...I can already feel the weight being lifted off me and my nerve endings soothing. I'd like to keep it going in this direction.
If there is a particular knife you would like me to look into and "review", maybe I'll do that in the future. In the meantime, I'll continue to discuss knife stuff and history and making and have plans to do some other stuff in the future that I've wanted to do for a few years and am now really chomping at the bit to do.

As I get older……Just yesterday I told a close friend if I croak, go grab my knife collection. I realized seeing your video how much value, sentimental or not, I place on my sharp belongings. Recently had a conversation with an older friend who expressed a lot of anxiety about her “antique valuable” material belongings and what would happen to them if she passed. The very fact is we all will leave behind our trophies or material goods. But I’m determined to squeeze every last inch of satisfaction from my ownership of these things and not worry about what happens to them when I’m gone.

    • @knifetimestory

That is a good healthy outlook.
I'm not worried about what happens after I'm gone, I just don't want my family burdened with having to deal with stuff they have absolutely no understanding of or appreciation of and getting screwed at the estate sale.
Thanks for watching the great comment.

Thinning out possessions can be both cathartic and practical, it's healthy and should be done on a regular basis to maintain order. Too much of anything demands our attention and our time is precious. Happy new year friend I hope the new year brings good health and happiness.

Good luck with that resolution Tom. I made that resolution last year myself. I usually keep them if I take the time to come up with one, but that fell flat by third week of January 23. So I added thousands of dollars more to my collection. I am trying to put my finger on what drives this obsession but the finger keeps getting cut. Anyways I made same resolution again this year. But somehow I’ve not added a Junglas to my Esse collection. How can it be complete without that. Wait a minute…that’s the problem, it’s unending and there’s no way to own them all. I am 4 days in, 361 to go. Thanks for the video, we have a lot in common.

But, alas, I do them and I get a kick out of doing them and it thrills me that there are enough people out there who for whatever reason get something out of my being an idiot, that it keeps growing, albeit at a snail's pace. Which beats the alternative.

Resolutions are never kept , Just like drinking alcohol or anything else it does not work unless you really have a strong will to do so and keep that promise. I hear the same thing every year and people do not stop eating junk food or exercise and health or drinking alcohol or drugs and they keep buying knives too. It is a human obsessive disorder addiction and hoarding of knives which just sit in drawers, and most are not used at all just to fondle to look at expensive paper weights that is all. How many knives can you use and rotate it gets ridiculous. If you can sell off part of a collection then that is a good start.

I'd like to think my talking about it and making them out of BK7's maybe got Ethan talking about it again. Who know. But, if you can pick up a Camillus version, you will be pleasantly surprised at the differences. I did a video about just that subject. Here is the link:

Looked into being a full-time maker, but when talking to other FT makers 30 years ago, they said that in order to just break even and survive, they had to do no less than 350 a year. That's nuts. No way I wanted to do that. It would take all the joy out of making them. Now I only make 2-3 a year. Some years 0. That is a much better pace for me.

Nice vid. My last “no more after these” were three Endura 4s in supposedly high end steel. Added a titanium clip to each. And there they sit. They’re all real nice and shiny and I use them now and then but they fail to meet two of my knife criteria; how much would I care if I lost it and would I replace it? Now I have to add age related stuff, like how long will I have it and how similar is it to other guys? Most of my knives are unsellable so reducing the collection usually means giving them to my kid. He’s polite enough to pretend he likes them.

Al lthe custom knives I own, made with ballebaring steel, outperform allmost all my production super steel knives like CPM 3V, even knives made of Elmax, They also never had microchips or rolls on their edges, and they sharpen way faster, than any of the supersteels, Ballbearing is the best option, for either a hunting knife, or any other kind of outdoors fixed blade belt knife.
Suprisigly, it also doesn't rust as fast as 1095 or other steels, it's steel like between toolsteels and Carbon steels, I can't describe it better. Having a mirror polish on these steels, helps a lot.

There’s Millions of used serviceable knives to be had for so little investment. Last new knives I bought was early 90’s. A original Cold steel trail master and Recon USA made. Before that it was early 70’s when I bought a couple traditional Buck folders. Sold or gave away all those knives years ago. Last 30 years my approach has been to just pick up great vintage hunters, big folders, pocket knives, and other edged tools for little investment. Those old tools work just fine. I dare say I’m done buying another knife until I run across another great Classic for a few dollars and it’s going home with me.

And the same wishes to you too!
Interestingly, I've spent quite a lot of TH-cam time posting on something similar! So, guess what? I'm going to share my somewhat similar views on knives.
Firstly, I also favour the 5-knife spread, but split into two sections - heavy carry, and light carry.
    Heavy carry:-
Large knife - This will forever be my Cold Steel Trail Master (San Mai III version), in its Rob Evans (Wales) leather dangler sheath.
Belt knife - Now here, I don't have it yet, but this will probably be MY last knife purchase ever. It's the Victorinox Venture Pro (with full kit) bushcraft knife. I'm waiting for the new redesigned sheath which will be coming in shortly this year, and I'm very impatient for that.
Multi-tool knife - My Victorinox Swiss Champ will continue in its role of a few decades, as it doesn't really need replacing. It's an old friend!
    Light carry:-
Belt knife - This is the Cold Steel SRK (CPM3V, in sabre grind version). This is the signature survival/camp knife for me.
Multi-tool knife - This is the venerable Victorinox Hercules, which serves as a combo bushcraft knife cum multi-tool. It's not perfect, but is serves as a light carry replacement for the two knives I would have if weight were not a major factor.
Note: for this to really work well outdoors, I would ALWAYS carry a folding saw: Heavy carry - a Silky Bigboy (or maybe a Gomboy), and light carry, a Silky Pocketboy.
I think this loadout has been refined to suit what I might want under most conditions.
I'd be interested in your thoughts on this.
    Cheers mate!

Snarky answer is that where I put all my trash.
Less snarky is it was a piece of crap that had bad Micarta that shrunk and looked like hell and the blade was asymmetrically ground and did not keep an edge. I would not feel right passing that along to anyone.

      @knifetimestory  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

They have done a wonderful job of marketing. I used to think the same thing, but, over time, and 25+ knives, I learned the hard way that their stuff is very "flashy" but not well executed with asymmetrical grinds of the blade, and handle, swollen micarta, shrunken micarta, cracked wood, blunt tips, improperly heat treated blades and poorly chosen sheaths. For the kind of $ they are asking, none of the aforementioned stuff should be an issue.

ESEE makes great EDC knives. If you want small yet very versatile, the IZULA is tough to beat. The IZULA II is just a wee bit larger and for some, much more comfortable to use. The Xanzudo is stainless if you need that and is a great EDC that really keeps an edge. I've sold my 45 year knife collection piece by piece over the last 12 months. I've gotten to a point where I couldn't give a crap about the knife community as all you see is clowns selling old knives for super inflated prices and the same for new knives, the industry has been ruined by ego maniacs.
Then you have all the clones on TH-cam doing their little battoning through wood to prove how amazing their knife is and you hardly ever see them use a knife for what it's really intended for.

That is a very poignant and thought-provoking comment. I agree. That is why most of my videos… I would say 98% of them are with me just talking about different aspects of the knife for history or some modifications. I too am very disenchanted by the knife community. I grew up going to knife shows and getting to talk to you all kinds of makers and it was a very special time. Now the Internet even though it has provided a way for me to have a forum to talk about knives, it has in my opinion to a degree ruined The knife community. Too many con artist, copycats, and people with only a modicum of life knowledge professing to be an expert.
Quite frankly… I have forgotten more about knives and the history of them than most people will ever know. Mind you, I have been immersed in this since I was 11 and became a member of the Case Collectors Club when it was first introduced.

The 70s and 80s when hunting for that knife was akin to treasure hunting, looking through magazines and catalogues in an attempt to find that one knife you long for, the adventure you had just to find that one knife. In my case travelling from the country to over 300 kilometres to go to a sports store where you walk in and the owners remember you even after a year or more and the genuine conversations you had back then and the knowledge that was learnt by just shutting your mouth. I agree the net has ruined so much of what we used to be.
When you grow up in the bush and use knives on a daily basis, it's hilarious to watch the armchair experts telling me all about knives.
Also I have split thousands of logs with an axe and never a knife, that's not what a knife is for.
Finding an old knife covered in rust and you get home and give her a good clean up and you feel as though you won the lottery and say to yourself how terrific it is, knowing fully well it's probably only a cheapy but it left a memory and feeling that no new knife could ever fill.
Memories of long ago, that sir is the knowledge that is of the most value to me these days.

Nope. My being a Man dried up those funds in a hurry. I can't even look at a can of that stuff. And, my heart really goes out to the poor guy who has to drive the delivery truck in my area that is completely emblazoned with the logos.

🥲🥲🥲 You culled your knife collection and didn’t offer me a chance to help you? 🥲🥲🥲

Glad I figured this out now and not at 73. I'd have to be institutionalized.
