Completely agree Paul. We always get asked about kit (more than anything else), but ultimately we tell people you can go out with the cheapest kit in the world and have a good trip if you invest some time to learn how to use things within it's limits and do so safely. Hi Paul. Nice video. I scandi-vexxed my Hultafors GK, so too my Morakniv Robust. I bash them & have fun. From what I can gather the Robust is made from C100 & the GK from SK5 steel. Both are modest steels but heat treated well & I use them regularly.

I’m a guitar tutor and have played for 25+ years and own lots of gear be it amps, pedals, guitars etc and I’m exactly the way you mentioned in that context, I can happily use any of my gear and make it work quite flippantly but as someone new to bushcraft I’m currently obsessing over ‘the kit’. It’s good to know there are people out there whom operate in a similar way. Love all of your content, very inspiring.
I'd like to watch your reviews on equipment. I'm still building out my kit and after watching so many of your videos it's clear you know what you're talking about. Some of us can only get out so often and watching a review by you would be informative and entertaining while we're at home thinking about the next trip.

Hi Paul, I'm not an expert when it comes to stainless steels but I believe they have better wear resistance and perhaps can be built with a slightly higher RC value when compared to 01 or other carbon steels. If you push 01 much beyond 59.5 to 60Rc there is a risk it could chip when used for hard bushcraft use especially if that knife has a fine scandi bevel. 01 is at it's toughest at 57Rc which is quite soft, back in the good old days many thought a knife that made 55HRc was good, and it would function, but need more frequent resharpening. It certainly wouldn't chip thats for sure:) Many makers including myself now aim for 59 to 59.5 as the go to Hrc for 01. It is purported to be the best compromise hardness value for an 01 knife. A careful user night do better with a harder blade maybe? Perhaps you as a full time user will appreciate the subtle nuances of the various steels in usage more than the average/ part time bushcrafter like myself and probably a lot of others too. Personally my own knives don't need to be sharpened often just stropped, but then I am only able to get out a couple of times a month for a simple "Overnighter" mostly:) Perhaps the handle chipping issue you mention with regard to the Julius Pettersson knife could be due to stabilised scales, or just a very hard batch of timber? I may be wrong, but the scales do look stabilised. There is always a trade off. With stabilised scales, you get a very inert handle but at the expense of it becoming a little more brittle, so if dropped and landing on a hard surface like a stone you could chip the handle. If not stabilised there will be a chance the scales could absorb moisture from the environment and shrink or expand ,sometimes quite alarmingly which could in extreme cases cause the handle to fail. As a knife maker I have almost driven myself to distraction trying to build a bomb proof knife, one that will hold it's edge forever, never need re sharpening, will never roll or chip and never become damaged if someone drops it from a skyscraper onto concrete or stones but sadly in the real world this is not to be. Like most things in life, knife making is a compromise. If you want a real workhorse knife then perhaps stainless and Micarta are the way to go with robust mechanical fixings and high strength epoxies but it won't win any prizes for beauty or be as aesthetically pleasing or show off the knife makers craft as well as one fitted with some nice burl or other wood. But then of course beauty is always in the eye of the beholder! The onus is on the owner to care for the tool as most knives whether carbon steel or stainless should last a lifetime with proper care and use. The problem with wooden scales swelling and being a real issue is one I had with boxwood scales on a stainless PK1 knife (after it had been in a river!). I have always and will always maintain that my Jacklore is the finest and strongest knife I own . All the others would go before it would. I have really used the hell out of that knife and have never put it on a stone. I strop it after every use and it comes back razor sharp every time. Loving to keep my Knives shiny a rub it down with alcohol after each use as well and it brings the blade right back to looking new.
Bet you never thought your 10 year celebrations would be in a pandemic a decade ago! Good to see you back on the screen. My go to knife keeps getting smaller!! Now pretty much use an eldris all the time, that stainless steel just seems to hold an edge for ever and that’s what draws me in.
Always good to listen to your advise and ideas, in particular how & why you adapt your ideas over time. I also like your reference to your guitar playing & your willingness to be more understanding of the requests for answer to things amongst the newer bushcraft viewers ... you have the knowledge, experience & understanding & that’s what people are tapping into. Paul, I'm really glad you've realised how obsessed people are with their kit 👍 As a long time Bushcraft guide the first thing people will ask you about is recommendations for kit because they respect your experience. Your Antler handle Woodlore doesn't need a new sheath, it just needs repairing. Make sure you add a drain hole.
Buy once cry once! I still have knives and kit from the early 80's it still works and accompanies me on my trips out bush here in Australia since I have emigrated. Great vid 😎🇦🇺

Soaking the handle in Boiled linseed oil over night and then applying a good paste wax should keep the wood from chipping easily... maybe worth a try... glad to see you back look forward to your book

Hey Paul, good to see you back on here mate. I’m not sure if you know, I have designed my own custom carving knife and it’s made from z-wear in collaboration with K knives Switzerland. From my own testing It’s got about 10x the wear resistant of custom made 01 tool steel knives and can be sharpened with similar abrasives. I sharpen with silicone carbide abrasive papers and you can’t tell you are sharpening such a high wear resistant steel, simply because silicone carbide is far harder than both steels. The little DC4 stones would be a perfect partner for a z wear bushcraft knife. It is the vanadium carbide within the steel which when the carbon steel edge wears exposes the carbides. I’d typically strop an 01 carving knife every 30 - 60 mins to keep it shaving sharp for carving and I went between 7-10 hours before having to strop the z-wear. All the best and warmest regards, Tom

Great vid Paul. I bought an Alan Wood Woodlore in the same year (2000), also off the back of my first ever bushcraft course. I loved it, but I ended up selling it a few years back. I miss the knife, but I've never had any difficulty with any of the other knives I've used over the years (some of which I've made myself.) My go-to these days is a Mora Robust or Clipper; not because they're the best, but because I always get some bright spark claiming that the knife makes all the difference. There's a lot to be said for using the tools that students are expected to use.

As a complete knife nutt and part time maker I have experience with many knives and steels, each have their good points and bad, I've used an RWL 34 knife on a weeks canoe trip and it got the thumbs up from me far better than 01 for edge retention and corrosion resistance. I personally prefer 3v or s30v but I'm in full agreement with you that RWL is a better choice for a bush knife. Enjoyed the video mate. JP woodlore knife has a crap handle, I could have had one years ago but the cheap and nasty handle put me off. A quality antler or natural micarta would be great on it but no point paying for the job if the steel turns out crap.
I was thinking on it and if you wax and wrap your knife, then soak your sheath and let it dry with the knife in place. It may tighten up around it again......or not
What are feelings in regards to thick Scandinavian knives for food prep and game? I find their performance very sub par, causing me to abandon them almost entirely for either full flat grinds, or convex grinds.
Hey Paul Glad to hear you share this opinion, as an engineer focusing on blade manufacturing I have been trying to rid the world of the belief that Carbon Steel, like 01 creates or holds the best edge, as simply put, it doesnt, in anyway shape or form. And there are indeed many things that go into a good knife besides Steel alone, like Edge Geometry which many bushcraft knives in my opinion could improve upon but that is my particular niche. I hope that your video leads to a bit of traction and help slowly dispel the myth of carbon steel that seems to plague the Outdoor world. Always glad to see your videos.
Try the Sleipter steel for Bushcraft knives. The Joker Bushlore or the Lars Fält Bushlore, are now in Sleiptner steel. Sleipner is not full stainless, but more resistance against rust.
I definitely agree with you. Knifes are meant to be used. I had a Woodlore SWC Bushcraft knife for years. I only used it on special occasions and kept looking for a similar but cheaper knife for everyday use. Then I wondered, for whom am I saving this knife? If I was a knife maker, would I love to see my knifes in a box on a shelf or worn down with use? Know is has been on my belt for about seven years of everyday use.
Knowing you as I do Thomas, I can imagine you were very considered about this. But yes, that's the right question to ask "who am I saving this for?" Sometimes there is an answer to this question (I know a few people who have bought nice knives to keep for their son or daughter's 18th birthday) but otherwise, it's hard to justify not using a great tool.... And if they are good, they will last a long time anyway! :-)

Thanks Neeman. It's good to hear from you. I don't typically use Kydex or other plastic sheaths except the standard Mora plastic sheaths. The Garberg is still kicking around in a knife drawer. I used it for quite a while and liked it for canoe trips. It doesn't replace my PK1 though. Also, for more general bushcraft use, there is too much belly in the blade of the Garberg to make it a good carver. The Woodlore shape or a basic Mora is better for the latter. Best, Paul

Hey Paul good to see you back on TH-cam. One thought in regards to O1 is that as more use is on the knife and the more it has been sharpened over time, then the steel that is now at the cutting edge would have been further in the stock at time of heat treatment. Depending on the heat treat (in particular soak times) then it's very likely that the steel that is now exposed on the cutting edge isn't the same steel as what it was when the knife was fresh and won't have the same hardness and edge retention as it once did. Hope that makes sense?

I've always appreciated your opinion on everything Bushcraft & this one is no different. I too bought a Woodlore (1999) & used it constantly. I found the handle too thin. I have collected many Bushcraft knives over the years & realized a few years ago that I'm storing them......just to store them. I felt guilty for them sitting in a safe & not being used as they were intended. I am not a collector, per se, so every time I would break them out to admire the craftsmanship, I realized I'm giving them a kind of disservice. I started selling them, trading them or giving them away. Too, I found an incredible knife maker in your country & have bought a few of his tools. I haven't looked back. Ben Orford is an amazing maker. I look forward to future videos & the book. I've already sent the email.

Great video Paul, I completely agree. I haven't bought new equipment for a few years now, in fact I have moved a lot of my items on as they weren't getting used as much as I would like. I tend to tell beginners that they will more and likely start out as kit junkies as they are trying to find out what works for them, however it is important to not fall in to the trap of just consuming the latest a greatest and claim to be outdoorsy. There has to come a point where the focus comes back to being outdoors and learning about the natural world. I have established the equipment that I need for different types of travel from canoeing, hiking, hill walking and just spending time in the woodlands and for me some of the best bits of gear I use are things I either started with or have made myself. The sheath probably just needs to be re-wet moulded. throw it in water till it's saturated. Wrap your knife in clean film. Stick it in the sheath rub it heavily so it confirms to the contours of the knife or use a vacuum sealer and live it in the bag for a couple h and then let dry (some just leave it out some throw it in the oven on low temp to dry)
Wow, ten years already, congratulations. Seems like yesterday. I left my Wilkinson sword micarta woodlore on the front of my car for a whole winter! Took a bit of work to clean up, but it’s still getting use. I use the jp blade that I handled myself mostly for carving still.
I'am knife steel nerd, and I'am glad for that. In these modern days we have a lot better steels then in history. Love and use MagnaCut, M390, Infi. I have Woodlore from Custom knife maker Igor Hritz in MagnaCut steel. Best knife. 🔥🇨🇿

Your Antler handle Woodlore doesn't need a new sheath, it just needs repairing. Make sure you add a drain hole.

Soaking the handle in Boiled linseed oil over night and then applying a good paste wax should keep the wood from chipping easily... maybe worth a try... glad to see you back look forward to your book

Hey Paul, good to see you back on here mate. I’m not sure if you know, I have designed my own custom carving knife and it’s made from z-wear in collaboration with K knives Switzerland. From my own testing It’s got about 10x the wear resistant of custom made 01 tool steel knives and can be sharpened with similar abrasives. I sharpen with silicone carbide abrasive papers and you can’t tell you are sharpening such a high wear resistant steel, simply because silicone carbide is far harder than both steels. The little DC4 stones would be a perfect partner for a z wear bushcraft knife. It is the vanadium carbide within the steel which when the carbon steel edge wears exposes the carbides. I’d typically strop an 01 carving knife every 30 - 60 mins to keep it shaving sharp for carving and I went between 7-10 hours before having to strop the z-wear. All the best and warmest regards, Tom

Great vid Paul. I bought an Alan Wood Woodlore in the same year (2000), also off the back of my first ever bushcraft course. I loved it, but I ended up selling it a few years back. I miss the knife, but I've never had any difficulty with any of the other knives I've used over the years (some of which I've made myself.) My go-to these days is a Mora Robust or Clipper; not because they're the best, but because I always get some bright spark claiming that the knife makes all the difference. There's a lot to be said for using the tools that students are expected to use.

As a complete knife nutt and part time maker I have experience with many knives and steels, each have their good points and bad, I've used an RWL 34 knife on a weeks canoe trip and it got the thumbs up from me far better than 01 for edge retention and corrosion resistance.
I personally prefer 3v or s30v but I'm in full agreement with you that RWL is a better choice for a bush knife.

JP woodlore knife has a crap handle, I could have had one years ago but the cheap and nasty handle put me off.
A quality antler or natural micarta would be great on it but no point paying for the job if the steel turns out crap.

I was thinking on it and if you wax and wrap your knife, then soak your sheath and let it dry with the knife in place. It may tighten up around it again......or not

What are feelings in regards to thick Scandinavian knives for food prep and game? I find their performance very sub par, causing me to abandon them almost entirely for either full flat grinds, or convex grinds.
Hey Paul Glad to hear you share this opinion, as an engineer focusing on blade manufacturing I have been trying to rid the world of the belief that Carbon Steel, like 01 creates or holds the best edge, as simply put, it doesnt, in anyway shape or form. And there are indeed many things that go into a good knife besides Steel alone, like Edge Geometry which many bushcraft knives in my opinion could improve upon but that is my particular niche.
I hope that your video leads to a bit of traction and help slowly dispel the myth of carbon steel that seems to plague the Outdoor world.

Try the Sleipter steel for Bushcraft knives.
The Joker Bushlore or the Lars Fält Bushlore, are now in Sleiptner steel.
Sleipner is not full stainless, but more resistance against rust.

I definitely agree with you. Knifes are meant to be used. I had a Woodlore SWC Bushcraft knife for years. I only used it on special occasions and kept looking for a similar but cheaper knife for everyday use. Then I wondered, for whom am I saving this knife? If I was a knife maker, would I love to see my knifes in a box on a shelf or worn down with use? Know is has been on my belt for about seven years of everyday use.
Knowing you as I do Thomas, I can imagine you were very considered about this. But yes, that's the right question to ask "who am I saving this for?" Sometimes there is an answer to this question (I know a few people who have bought nice knives to keep for their son or daughter's 18th birthday) but otherwise, it's hard to justify not using a great tool.... And if they are good, they will last a long time anyway! :-)

Thanks Neeman. It's good to hear from you. I don't typically use Kydex or other plastic sheaths except the standard Mora plastic sheaths. The Garberg is still kicking around in a knife drawer. I used it for quite a while and liked it for canoe trips. It doesn't replace my PK1 though. Also, for more general bushcraft use, there is too much belly in the blade of the Garberg to make it a good carver. The Woodlore shape or a basic Mora is better for the latter. Best, Paul

Hey Paul good to see you back on TH-cam. One thought in regards to O1 is that as more use is on the knife and the more it has been sharpened over time, then the steel that is now at the cutting edge would have been further in the stock at time of heat treatment. Depending on the heat treat (in particular soak times) then it's very likely that the steel that is now exposed on the cutting edge isn't the same steel as what it was when the knife was fresh and won't have the same hardness and edge retention as it once did. Hope that makes sense?
Actually you could say the same for any knife steel not just O1, but thought it could be relevant as your O1 knives have a lot of use on them.
I don't believe a Woodlore knife is differentially hardened.

I've always appreciated your opinion on everything Bushcraft & this one is no different. I too bought a Woodlore (1999) & used it constantly. I found the handle too thin. I have collected many Bushcraft knives over the years & realized a few years ago that I'm storing them......just to store them. I felt guilty for them sitting in a safe & not being used as they were intended. I am not a collector, per se, so every time I would break them out to admire the craftsmanship, I realized I'm giving them a kind of disservice. I started selling them, trading them or giving them away. Too, I found an incredible knife maker in your country & have bought a few of his tools. I haven't looked back. Ben Orford is an amazing maker. I look forward to future videos & the book. I've already sent the email.

Great video Paul, I completely agree. I haven't bought new equipment for a few years now, in fact I have moved a lot of my items on as they weren't getting used as much as I would like. I tend to tell beginners that they will more and likely start out as kit junkies as they are trying to find out what works for them, however it is important to not fall in to the trap of just consuming the latest a greatest and claim to be outdoorsy. There has to come a point where the focus comes back to being outdoors and learning about the natural world. I have established the equipment that I need for different types of travel from canoeing, hiking, hill walking and just spending time in the woodlands and for me some of the best bits of gear I use are things I either started with or have made myself. The sheath probably just needs to be re-wet moulded. throw it in water till it's saturated. Wrap your knife in clean film. Stick it in the sheath rub it heavily so it confirms to the contours of the knife or use a vacuum sealer and live it in the bag for a couple h and then let dry (some just leave it out some throw it in the oven on low temp to dry)

I left my Wilkinson sword micarta woodlore on the front of my car for a whole winter! Took a bit of work to clean up, but it’s still getting use. I use the jp blade that I handled myself mostly for carving still.
I think you can wet form the existing sheath to obtain a secure fit again?

I'am knife steel nerd, and I'am glad for that. In these modern days we have a lot better steels then in history. Love and use MagnaCut, M390, Infi. I have Woodlore from Custom knife maker Igor Hritz in MagnaCut steel. Best knife. 🔥🇨🇿
