      Of course, for long distance flying. In fact, I've just built my first 6S li-ion and am currently charging it for the first time (also with the intent of building a 6S2P pack soon). But yeah, I plan to have one Li-ion and like 12 LiPos, as mostly I like doing flippy floppies.
      Also, for all the people talking about DJI drones, I'm pretty sure they would all be running Li-ion now anyway. They're not punchy, but have amazing battery life. I can't imagine them running Lipos.

    I am just getting into FPV Long Range. Still new to FPV, only on day 2. Working on the hovering for now and line of sight until better goggles come in next week. I ordered iFlights but I can see very well and there is no focus option. Anyway, I used to ride electric skateboards and remembered I had an old battery pack in the closet. Took it apart and there were 20 18650's in it, only 3 days of use. So for my Assis 280 explorer I am going to start experimenting with DIY packs. I laughed when you said it's for science. My whole life my saying has been, lets try it for science! We MUST experiment to move forward.

    Excellent. Reading the comment about punch. The LiPo should give more.....but at a negative for flight time. LiPo batteries are angry....they are always ready to dump as much as they can as quick as they can. Good but not steady. Bit like running Nitros in your car.....or Hare and Tortoise. But you know this already and after achieving nearly 7 minutes more I would say a very positive result indeed

    I would also like to bring up the weight differences in the batteries. If you tested these batteries with equal weight you could balance around extra cells and or extra storage in the Li-Ion packs to compensate for performance and still likely achieve the robust endurance. Albeit, I have neither the resources, knowledge, nor the time to experiment with these adjustments. This is only theorized using the numbers and information available to me.

    Awesome video! Found you as was researching behavior of Li-Ion batteries. I recently built a 4 inch long-range drone and got a pre-made Li-Ion 3S, 3000mAh battery. It seems to only get to 4V per cell when fully charged, and then drops really quickly for the first 1V overall (so about .3V of each cell). Is that normal or is it a quality issue with this battery? Any quirks in behavior you can share would be really helpful as I'm trying to get up the knowledge and confidence to send it out pretty far. Thank you!!!

    • @Quadcopterguide
      @Quadcopterguide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hey Itai, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It is much appreciated! Sounds like there is an issue with your battery or the voltage meter in the quad. I would be very careful. That does not sound like normal behavior.

      Great question regarding charging. Li-ion charge programs normally only charge the cells to 4.1v max. Certain cells such as the ones I used are meant to go to 4.2v. I use the lipo balance charge cycle as it also uses constant current/constant voltage to charge.

      Hey Likeandros, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It is much appreciated! the voltage stays the same, the capacity doubles but since you are pulling juice out of 2 packs instead of one each pack only gets half of the energy pulled out of it at once, if that makes sense.

    Building a 7 inch drone efficiency long range and endurance drone , definitely will be using molicel p45a cells in 6s 1p self made battery.. looks safer than polymer battery, also it's just a hobby for me so not be flying everyday which in lipo case might degrade the battery more compared to li ion battery that has longer and more charge cycle.. my main purpose is just to have a cinematic mavic like drome build. Not flying fast and acro just going high altitude 😅

  • @InfinityVision
    @InfinityVision 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Because the voltage levels of lithium ion vs lipo is slightly different, especially when fully discharged, couldn’t the drone do an emergency low voltage landing before the lith ion pack is truly discharged? I mean if the Low voltage threshold of the drone could not be manually adjusted down. Some people may try this on drones with fixed LVC settings.

    • @Quadcopterguide
      @Quadcopterguide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, thank you for this.
    Have you abandoned lipo for li-ion; indefinitely?
    From a quad flying style perspective, would lipo be better suited for those who fly their quads acrobatic style, and li-ion for those who fly their quads in a cruising style?

    • @Quadcopterguide
      @Quadcopterguide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey again, thanks for checking out another video. Also a great question. I would not say that I have abandoned LiPo. Your presumption for LiPo for Acro and Li-Ion for cruising is a fair assessment currently. I can pull close to 200amps out of the 7" quad, if my amp meter is still calibrated on-board, and that on a li-ion would surely cause it to just plummet out of the sky, hopefully without a fireball haha. For larger quads that can carry liion packs, preferably in parallel, i would say it is definitely for cruising. Let's see if this changes in the future.

    • @mosephina

      @@Quadcopterguide Thank you for your reply
      I'm learning about the electrical aspects of FPV.
      Is it correct to say that batteries wired in series increase how long a given power is available, and batteries wired in parallel increase the overall power available, but that overall power increase is not necessarily available for the same amount of time as those batteries wired in series.

    • @Quadcopterguide
      @Quadcopterguide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s the opposite. So in series you add the voltage. That’s how a 6s pack is 22.2v. Parallel let’s you combine the mAh of the packs.

    I would have liked to see your battery temperature after landing, that is a good indication of how hard they were working. Do you have any formula to convert Lipo to Li-ion pack ? How a 'c' rating is managed in li-ion compared to high c rating in lipo?

      should be the same but be careful.. many manufacturers fudge C ratings.

    I run a DJI setup...the FC has a dedicated DJI plug so I know it's getting regulated voltage. If I fly at 60-70% throttle for any length of time it just shuts down and crashes. I can hover and meander along just fine but if if I accelerate (slowly) to about 60% I can fly like that for about 5 seconds and then it just shuts off and hits the deck hard! I fly a 7" Kakute F7 AIO DJI flight controller. Anyone else have a similar issue? I can't figure out if the battery is failed/can't recover like it should or this setup is not compatible with a DJI setup for some reason.

      Hey Pattwakt, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It is much appreciated! That doesn't sound ideal at all. Initial suggestion is of course trying a fresh battery. To me it sounds like it is either not supplying enough voltage, or something is drawing too much voltage. Next step I guess is to try another FC.

    Hello!! I have a question I am hoping you will see this. I have a dji phantom 3 advanced that I use as a fishing drone to carry shark baits out from the beach to around 300-400 metres, my drone has a max lift capacity of 1.6kg which is plenty for me currently but I was curious to if I make my own li ion battery pack would that hinder the ability of the drone to lift? I know you said you don’t have that instant discharge for performance but I’m always going slow taking 2 minutes to get to 300m and also lifting slowly so would that matter? Also with a lighter battery pack I could lift more and or bigger battery pack for same weight as my currently Li po battery for longer flight time and more sharks caught. If anyone has any information on this please don’t hesitate to comment on here

      Hey there, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It is much appreciated! It all depends on how many amps you are pulling. LiIon cant provide as many amps as lipo. You shouldnt really pull more than half of the rated amps out of a li ion pack. So if the cells are rated at 30amp you should pull 15amps mostly. Hope that helps.

      No worries. So li ion batteries don’t produce as much Max simultaneous power or amp draw at once. You have to figure out what your max amp draw is and in which portion of flight. If you can manage to stay say 10-25% below the max amp draw rating on the li ion battery I would say it will work well enough to do the test.

    You might want to browse what I can do with a 10inch quad and a 6s2p pack. Is it as nuts as a 1800mah 6s LiPo? No but I can still fly quite hard with lithium ion.
    Have run lithium ion on 3.5in all the way up to 13in x-class.
    It is also not worth flying much below 3v per cell. 3v in the air and the goal of landing at a worst of 2.8v per cell in the air when flying. Voltage sag is quick from 3.2 to 3v per cell and downright horrible below 3v per cell.
    Bench marks I have hit
    20min on 3s 1404 3700kv on 3.5in landing at 3.2v. From 4.2-3.6v I fly the drone fairly hard going to around 70% throttle. I used a current meter in line with the battery to hold the drone down and load the props to find where throttle gives me about 20amps max.
    23min on 6s2p 2806.5 1300kv on 7in landing at 3v per cell. 40mph cruising the entire time.
    9min on 6s2p 3115 640kv on 10in landing at 3.6v per cell. Hitting 50+mph with ease while having plenty of power to pull out of dives while doing matty flip type maneuvers. Honestly best flying LithiumIon combo I have hit on to date.
    18min on 6s4p 4214 400kv on 13in landing at 3v per cell. Cruising speed nearly 50mph the entire time. This build is a bit under powered and really needs to be on 8s to properly pull out of dives.
    Have a 10in deadcat frame(was meant for 12in props but biblades cause too much vibration over triblades but power was better with 12in APC MR props) that I designed that can also run 6s4p but have not given it a lot of attention. Sweet spot has been 10in 6s4p and built light.
    Lastly, try the Sony ...edit (had typo meant VTC5D) instead of VTC6A. Slightly less capacity but slightly better continuous current handling capabilities.
    Will be moving to a 8s4p(bridging 4s2p packs) for my Xclass.

      Hey DividingByZero, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It is much appreciated! It was great reading about your experiences with Li-Ion. I assume you used vtc6d for all your packs? It looks like here in the EU its VCT5D or 6A that is available. I agree about the quick drop in voltage after 3.2v. The 23min on your 7" with same specced motors is very respectable. What frame and setup do you have on the 7"?

      @@Quadcopterguide had tried VTC6A. But no, prefer VTC5D. Had typo abov3 meant VTC5D not 6D. Slightly more current capability for slightly less capacity.
      Frame for 7in is Project 399 Super G in a deadcat config.
      Have a fair amount of detail on my builds and what I am flying from past 3-6 months experimenting with Lithiun Ion.

At the rate technology and innovation is going, it wont be long till someone designs a lithium or comparable output that lasts longer before to to long.
