Just got done with my first flight on a chimera 7 with 6s2p auline. So far I have noticed a .4 volt difference between load and resting voltage. A 2.8 min resting voltage makes sense. Especially since you are coming close to cut off voltage for most 18650 cells.
mine came from banggood with the newer version of the FC which had i2c! so... I swapped the GPS to a matek m8q-5883 and have full capability iNav, as all long range quads should have ;-) great quad!
It's good practice to lock number of cells to 4 here because you can break your battery as well when controller thinks you're flying on smaller battery

Justin, I have a Chimera 7 and have been flying Li-Po 6S 2600 mAh batteries. I purchased some Li-Ion 6S with Sony VTC5A cells. I fly the Li-Po's down to the point that the 3.5V average is about to change to 3.5 (meaning I am roughly 14.2-14.3 for total). I flew the Li-Ion down to 3.0V (maybe a smidge lower) but both trials had resting voltage right after power-down of 3.1 or 3.2. So, what's the point, eh? Well, the three LiPo's averaged 12 min 54 seconds (as determined by goggle recordings) and the two Li-Ion averaged 11 min 37 seconds. So far it would seem that although the Li-Ion are about 88 grams lighter each they are also a minute 17 seconds lighter on flight time. All of the flights were cruising the same hillside switching back and forth Li-Po->Li-Ion->Li-Po->Li-Ion->LiPo. Most of the time I saw around 10 mAh for the draw with all of it less than 20. There was no free-styling or aerobatics. I was expecting the Li-Ion to give better duration if the pilot kept the amp draw light. Am I missing something here? Mark

lovely review, i am going to try this battery out on my 6s Rekon5, do i need to be all the time gentle with throttle or can i from time to time push it a bit harder, like if i was mountain surfing and will need to escape from something quickly with more power?
Don't crash that Rekon5. lol. Incredibly fragile frame. Broke an arm and both bottom plates, twisted up the stack bolts after hitting an 1/8" branch doing about 30mph. Thought it took out the stack, luckily no damage. I wouldn't feel comfortable freestyling it.. I'm putting INAV on mine when I get my backordered frame parts...

So when can you "not" use lithium ions? I just built a high discharge pack and used it on 2 nearly identical 5inch quads. One works great, the other flys with some light oscillations. Not sure why. Is it motor KV? So much cheaper to make the pack at home. Use nice high dischard molicel 4s pack for about 25 bucks!
Let me ask you a question. It's a 3 inch cine hoop. In the video, there are videos of making a pack with 4 lithium-ion 18650 batteries and flying it with an FPV long range. With excitement, I ordered batteries and made a pack. LGDBHG21865 3000mA. The problem is... When I hovered, the yaw tick symptom reappeared after it came up, and, after a few seconds, the low-voltage buzzer sounded and the aircraft sank. If I open it again, it opens again,,,,, repeat... So, I changed the low voltage warning in Beta Flight to 2.7V, and when I turned it on, there was no sound. If I take a break for a while, it will float again. But it sinks again... The battery is hot, and the voltage is 3.8V... TT I bought 40 tablets... but I can't use them all? How do people use? Batteries were also made by buying anything. Is my FC the problem? Or is there a special setting for Li-ion? FC is IFlight SucceX Mini F4 V3 Stack, and the manual says 2~6 Lipol. Do I have to use only Lipol? Can I change FC? Why is this happening? It's a waste of money/work time. I'm serious~~ Please advise.~~ TT

Great review as always Justin. I picked up a Rekon 5 about a week ago and it's probably one of the most locked in Kwad's I've ever flown. 4S Analog version coupled with some TMotor F2004 3000kv. Gonna have to try some Li-on packs soon 🤙🏻 Just threw up my maiden if you want to check it out.
I have 3000kv motors and a 4s li-ion pulls 30a+ at 50-60% throttle. I wouldn't bother with a li-ion honestly. I'm in the same boat and just got some 1800kv motors.

Weight. Lithium is a lighter battery so you get more range / better power to weight ratio but lithium batteries generally have a lower peak pulse amperage so you can't punch out like you can with lipo packs. I'm new to FPV but know a decent amount about batteries 🤣 don't ask me anything else though
Thanks for your video! At 44:50 you say that < 2000 KV motors must be used. I bought the Rekon 5 but it came with 2004 3000 KV motors (the green version oof the HGLRC motors). Will it be safe to use the Li-Ion pack with my version of the quad, or do I need to replace the motors for the purple version (1800 KV)?

Took my Chimera 7 with 6000mAh 6S2P Li-Ion pack out last weekend and halfway to the mountain peak I was heading to at around 7 mins it read 3.1v so I turned back right away. It climbed back up to 3.5v by the time I got back. I was wondering whether this is normal or not and it appears that it is? I'm paranoid that while cruising with the voltage down to 2.5 it will be damaging the battery or is it just if the resting voltage is that low? I really thought I'd be getting more flight time out of these $200 CAD batteries.
I have the Shadowfiend. What if I want to use li-ion and lipos at different times of course, do I need to go into BF everytime to switch the voltage warning etc...? Or is there a set of numbers I can use that's good for either battery type, so I don't have to change it back and forth? Because I have some Auline 1000 mAh 4s lipos, plus I have one of these li-ion batteries from Flywoo also. I'm flying analog BTW.

hey, so u said over a 2k kv isnt the best setup for liion then? we were chatting on another vid if yours, built my 4s 4ah pack with mollicell p42a, but flight time def isnt as amazing as Id hope even when babying it....this on a protek 35..... havent had tons of flights on the 35 to see my max, but def sag right off take off and stabilizes after a tiny bit but def not breaking flight times more than a 2200mah lipo currently... thoughts? thank! I just want to know that the li-on 18650 batteries are much cheaper than lipos but still most of the fpv racers uses lipo for fpv flying . So is there any difference between the two in terms of performance ?? Please let me know.
RSM yes good question. Li-ion does not have the high performance of a Lipo. Generally we use Lipo for racing and freestyle. Think of a Li-ion as a low performance “cruising” long flight time battery.
hy i've got some sony murata 3100 mah 35A curent cells to make a 6s2p pack , my concern i about how many nichel strips do i need to get 35A per series pack (35 per pack will lead to 70A discharge total 2p config), i have some 0.2x8 mm pure nichel strip that i've heard and tried that it doesn't like to stack multiple layers, and some nichel plated steel that weld better more buttery. Are 4 layers enough ? should i alter the strips to have steel nichel steel nichel ... also i think it is better to connect the cells in parallel using the strips, at each joint of 2 parallel cells instead of just at the end like if they were 2 separate packs, it should help with balance, but i ask just to be sure. Also even if i stack enough strips on top of each other, all of them will interact with the cell using the tiny spot welds of the first strip that conects all of them to the battery trough it, are they gonna be enough, those spot welds ?
I need help here, I'm building a 4 inch drone and I want it to be a long range drone, for exploration, I don't want to do wild things nor a wild speed Are these motors a good option: 1404 3000KV I have the option for 4000KV i don't know which one is better for long range and what li ion battery do I need, how many cells and mAh for a 4inch drone, if I get something around 20 minutes I will be more than happy Also, I better use 2 or 3 blade propellers?

I think lion packs are less at risk of bursting into flames, most 18650s have an internal cut off voltage where the protection circuitry kicks in, I'd be worried about it falling out of the sky.
Most cells don't have protection, and making a pack with protected cells would be a bit silly. You could make a pack with a separate battery management system but that would also be silly
@@ipodhty nearly all genuine 18650 cells have very basic protection circuitry for over voltage and undervoltage, for example sonys vtc5. Most also have a basic overcurrent protection under the positive terminal by using a poppet style metal membrane that will open the circuit.
Awesome video. I have some questions if you have some time. I have the Rekon5 4S version and I noticed at roughly 60% throttle, I'm pushing over 30amps. I'm using the Flywhoo 4S1P 3000mah battery. Now the Li-ion batteries have "Max continuous amperage" of 30amps. So with the Rekon pushing 30amps at a relatively "low" (50-60%) throttle, I'm worried about attempting mountain surfing, especially at high altitude in Colorado. I've gone into Betaflight and adjusted the current meter per the HGLRC FC manual, but it was only 2 points off the default firmware load out for the board. So the amperage *should* be reading correctly on the OSD. What is your amperage readout during your flights on the windy day you flew on? (Edit I see you mentioned it at 45min 10sec) . Looks like I need to get rid of the 4S motors and switch over to 6S low KV motors.
For reference Betaflight has "voltage meter" set to a 110 scale. The HGLRC manual says to change it to 112. But thats it. Amperage meter remains the same at 179 scale

Why do you feel lion batteries are more dangerous than Lipo? I kind of feel the opposite, I am way more worries about the lipos.

Do i Charge a 8000 mah lithium-ion battery with an 1C Rating? So 8 amps like the same for lipos or is there another c-charge-rating for lithium-ions?
The 1hr mark is the default setting for film so that is probably why it defaulted with that in there.

Might need the 1800kv motors. The higher kv motors sag out the li-ion. Meaning the voltage pull it too high. Li-ion needs low kv = low voltage pull.

Can you set max ampdraw in the betaflight to protect lion battery's?

A 4s 18650 VTC6 works great on the emax babyhawk 2. Flies over 25 min. Check Nurks babyhawk

Hi Justin me again I'm only getting less than a minute flight time with the 1500 4s 120c battery when take off goes 50 to 55 amps any ideas what's going on new battery lipid and motors cheers want to get into long range

At present iam using lipo 2200 mah it gives me a flight time of 5 min when I attach my mobile phone to record video without gimbal totally I think it draws 40amp

Took my Chimera 7 with 6000mAh 6S2P Li-Ion pack out last weekend and halfway to the mountain peak I was heading to at around 7 mins it read 3.1v so I turned back right away. It climbed back up to 3.5v by the time I got back. I was wondering whether this is normal or not and it appears that it is? I'm paranoid that while cruising with the voltage down to 2.5 it will be damaging the battery or is it just if the resting voltage is that low? I really thought I'd be getting more flight time out of these $200 CAD batteries.

I have the Shadowfiend. What if I want to use li-ion and lipos at different times of course, do I need to go into BF everytime to switch the voltage warning etc...? Or is there a set of numbers I can use that's good for either battery type, so I don't have to change it back and forth? Because I have some Auline 1000 mAh 4s lipos, plus I have one of these li-ion batteries from Flywoo also. I'm flying analog BTW.

hey, so u said over a 2k kv isnt the best setup for liion then? we were chatting on another vid if yours, built my 4s 4ah pack with mollicell p42a, but flight time def isnt as amazing as Id hope even when babying it....this on a protek 35..... havent had tons of flights on the 35 to see my max, but def sag right off take off and stabilizes after a tiny bit but def not breaking flight times more than a 2200mah lipo currently... thoughts? thank! (fyi we were chatting on one of my other YT accts, but same diff)

RSM yes good question. Li-ion does not have the high performance of a Lipo. Generally we use Lipo for racing and freestyle. Think of a Li-ion as a low performance “cruising” long flight time battery.

hy i've got some sony murata 3100 mah 35A curent cells to make a 6s2p pack , my concern i about how many nichel strips do i need to get 35A per series pack (35 per pack will lead to 70A discharge total 2p config), i have some 0.2x8 mm pure nichel strip that i've heard and tried that it doesn't like to stack multiple layers, and some nichel plated steel that weld better more buttery. Are 4 layers enough ? should i alter the strips to have steel nichel steel nichel ... also i think it is better to connect the cells in parallel using the strips, at each joint of 2 parallel cells instead of just at the end like if they were 2 separate packs, it should help with balance, but i ask just to be sure. Also even if i stack enough strips on top of each other, all of them will interact with the cell using the tiny spot welds of the first strip that conects all of them to the battery trough it, are they gonna be enough, those spot welds ?

Are these motors a good option: 1404 3000KV I have the option for 4000KV i don't know which one is better for long range and what li ion battery do I need, how many cells and mAh for a 4inch drone, if I get something around 20 minutes I will be more than happy

I think lion packs are less at risk of bursting into flames, most 18650s have an internal cut off voltage where the protection circuitry kicks in, I'd be worried about it falling out of the sky.
Most cells don't have protection, and making a pack with protected cells would be a bit silly. You could make a pack with a separate battery management system but that would also be silly
@@ipodhty nearly all genuine 18650 cells have very basic protection circuitry for over voltage and undervoltage, for example sonys vtc5. Most also have a basic overcurrent protection under the positive terminal by using a poppet style metal membrane that will open the circuit.

2004 1800kv motors. And the HQ 5” props with two bolt holes.

Awesome video. I have some questions if you have some time. I have the Rekon5 4S version and I noticed at roughly 60% throttle, I'm pushing over 30amps. I'm using the Flywhoo 4S1P 3000mah battery.
Now the Li-ion batteries have "Max continuous amperage" of 30amps. So with the Rekon pushing 30amps at a relatively "low" (50-60%) throttle, I'm worried about attempting mountain surfing, especially at high altitude in Colorado.
I've gone into Betaflight and adjusted the current meter per the HGLRC FC manual, but it was only 2 points off the default firmware load out for the board. So the amperage *should* be reading correctly on the OSD.
What is your amperage readout during your flights on the windy day you flew on? (Edit I see you mentioned it at 45min 10sec) . Looks like I need to get rid of the 4S motors and switch over to 6S low KV motors.
For reference Betaflight has "voltage meter" set to a 110 scale. The HGLRC manual says to change it to 112. But thats it. Amperage meter remains the same at 179 scale
